Earlier this year I found a Titleist Platinum 975-FE Driver 9.5 on Ebay for 14.00. The shipping was as much as the Driver. I have the Calaway X Driver in the bag and the Titleist was out driving my Callaway by 25 yards. I only carry the Titleist now. I believe the 975-FE came out in 1996. Crazy! Great video. I gave it a like, just 2999 more to get Ashley in the simulator.
Expensive new drivers are very pleasing to our brain but cheaper older ones can be almost as good. If you hit the ball only 240 then the difference is even less for us mere mortals! Great video!
There are many factors that determine the price and performance. Technology, swing speed, strike location, shaft specs, ball type, materials used for production, and cost of production. Marketing and tour player use also can influence the consumer. It’s like you mentioned your Subaru and the BMW parked next to your car: both get you to the next place, all you’re paying for is the prestige & luxury for the BMW. Another thing about golf clubs is confidence; whe there it’s a persimmon driver or the new Ping G430 coming up, if it inspires confidence for your game then it’s worth the money.
I have made a practice of buying 3-4 yr old clubs and getting them for 60-75% off with zero difference in performance from the latest and greatest. Great show- you proved my point.
Drivers have been at USGA imposed limits for years. For that reason any gains are likely to be small. I'm 65, just took up the game again and recently went to Golf Galaxy to get a ballpark on my distances with my current clubs. (I was getting 195-205 yards with my 10.5 M5, Tensei Orange R Flex at 80 MPH) While there I demoed the 10.5 Stealth, Hzrdus Red R Flex]. 2 out of 5 balls were going 215-220! I switched the shafts and got the same results. No gain in the M5, 10-15 yards gains in the stealth. It appears center strikes gave the extra distance while off center hits equalled the M5's best. As a result I now own one.
Great video guys. Bought myself a Titleist 975j 11.5 driver the other month for £15 delivered as I wanted a Taylor made mini driver but didn't want to pay big bucks...I hit further and straighter than a 460cc driver so sticking with it. Also bought the 975J in 8.5° for £10 but not had chance to give it a go.
We are being conned by companies into buying the latest and the best but actually due to golf rules about moi and everything there is no difference between these latest and older clubs. Stay safe and keep the videos coming.

Good to see that comparison, I don't play as much as used too anymore, gut when test a modern Cobra driver against my old TM R11S during the year, there was at most 5 yards of difference, the Cobra sounded more like a Pro Striking it with a little bit better dispersion, but absolute minimum for me.
you're saying that because you don't want to spend a few bucks on a new driver. but there is a bigger difference in the sweet spot. If you hit in the sweet spot all drivers 7 years or newer are about the same.
Yep! I know similar videos have been done, but would love to see Trackman differences of an older set or 3 generations of irons (of similar lofts): Ping Eye 2/MacGregor blade vs TaylorMade RAC/Mizuno MP-33 vs G425/Blueprint
I have a Stealth Driver and for weeks I had it set to standard and struggled to hit it. With some help from the Pro at my local range we played with some of the head and shaft settings and I’m now getting 30 yards more and more consistent straight shots. I think to get the best out of this club you need to play around and find what works for your swing.
@Jon, I feel that the right set up or being "fitted" is more important. So if a club is $50 or $500 isn't the best reference here, rather what works for your mechanics.
Another great video and reinforces me sticking with the SLDR and RBZ2 I got from Goodwill for $2.99 each. I don't think upgrading to a Stealth will gain me much :)
Great video guys! Love your channel! My current driver is a TaylorMade M2 that I purchased on Black Friday in 2018. Great driver! My current 2 wood...YES..2 WOOD...is a Callaway Hawkeye Titanium about 20 years old. Please do another video on fairway woods.
Hi Ashley & Jon! I miss you guys, I am glad that I am watching you videos again, I forgot how entertaining they are. The people want to see Ashley in the Simulator! Ken
Titleist was definitely the winner. On a car tangent, I bought a BMW 335i and programmed in the Mdrive screen. Didn't really do anything since the actual hardware wasn't there, but looks cool 😂
If the promises of adding 5- 10 yards to your drive from past ads, I should be driving the ball 450 yards carry. But I don’t. I have a Callaway driver from 20 years ago that carries the same as my new Ping G425 in year 2022. I haven’t noticed any dispersion difference either. You hit the ball long with a fluid swing. I enjoy the videos. Down to earth normal people. I can relate.
The TSI’s are all on sale right now. Found one for under 200 with a Diamana shaft at pga superstore. Crazy they were still 400+ before the newest ones came out.
I still say the Titleist 909 D comp. I tried the stealth as well and was not impressed with it. Compared to my TaylorMade RBZ. But my concern is with it being a carbon face in the cold that carbon face May shatter or crack much easier.
Great video! Makes you wonder what are you really getting for all that money! Still playing with my 3 year old driver....took into the PGA Superstore to test against some of the newer drivers.....no contest as my gamer came out on top.
Nice video Jon and Ashley, I have a stealth and found i like sim2 over the stealth. I have never tried a Titleist before but for the cost between the 2 Taylormade and Titleist honestly I think the Titleist would be the better deal.
was thinking of getting the Stealth now i am wondering...lol...also interested in the new Titleist TSR2 Driver and the new PING G430 Driver........ great video as always....MERRY CHRISTTMAS.....CHEERS from VULCAN CANADA
The ventus that is in that Stealth isn't the expensive ventus...that is a stock shaft without Velocore. In my experience in my fitting velocore makes a huge difference.
Jon and Ash….Like this concept. I always wondered what the tech brings to the table. For us weekend hackers, I’m sure we wouldn’t see much of a difference between new and old equipment. I’ll take the $35 club and put the $500 on greens fees.
I'd love to see one where you get properly fitted. Looked like a little more loft or a higher launching shaft could get more out of 110 club. Fun vid thanks!
I have always been told that the shaft is the 'engine' of the club while the head provides forgiveness. So any ballspeed gains are down to shaft specs - even the most forgiving and springy heads won't result in distance without the correct shaft.
Merry Christmas Jon and Ashley. Amazon the difference between 100,200,300,400 and on and on dollar clubs. But technically will make you hit it longer. Best club testing couple on youtube.
Your first drive with the Stealth was literally stealth mode with 0 clubhead speed (wouldn't count that one as it was a trackman malfunction!) Interesting to see that average roll of all drives with Stealth was much higher than with the Titleist. Conclusion is that spin rate is a bit too high with the Titleist. In real life, driving onto grassy fairways, I imagine this difference in roll distance would be more noticeable. Also the higher spinning Titleist drives would be affected more by wind etc. Would be cool to see a real I.e. non-simulator comparison
What a brilliant video. I have aways thought top end Taylor Mades are not very forgiving. Ping or PXG are more consistent. Not sure if they are better than the 410 I traded in....
Should have tried the d100 driver. If only because it's the cheapest at time of release. The Titlest is a high quality club with a high release price. Just a thought, really good nuts and bolts review nonetheless
many differences but, before you spend big $$ on gear i would be getting lessons. This past summer (North of the 49th) was not out much. Driver (Titlist T3) completely deserted me. In complete frustration I benched my driver for my Exotic 3 wood. Slowed my swing and started noticing my score dropped. Was getting a carry of 200+. Was out driving my buddies on a regular basis and hitting the fairway. Long story short I will not be using my driver next summer. While my driver when working did not get me much more than the 3 wood. Many YT videos on that.
I can't find woods I hit better than the 909f. Great look and feel! Never tried the driver. This seems to be the case for many years. Bought an SLDR-S to start and it was long but not consistent. Got an older Cobra that went 10 yards less but fairly straight. The driver that got me was the Maverick Sub-zero. I think it comes down to the level of adjustment for the ball to fly straight most of the time but now the new drivers are not much better if at all IMO
The results really aren't that stunning. Driver technology had a revolution in the 90's and early 2000's but strict rules on driver performance means there really isn't much more companies can do to make their clubs longer while staying legal, and it's been that way for quite some time. We can see this in practice if you look at driving distance on the PGA Tour. From 1990 to 2005, the average driving distance increased from 262 to 289.... a huge increase of 27 yards. However, since then the average distance peaked in 2018 at 295 yards and has pretty much remained there since. Moreover, when you look at the long drive leader every year the difference is even less. Bubba Watson led the Tour in driving distance in 2006 at 319.6 yards. In 2021 it was DeChambeau at 320.8 yards. Many would also argue that the relatively small increase in driving distance over the last 15 years would almost exclusively be the result of better training and an increased focus on strength/speed training among pros... not some sort of technological change. So, it's hardly surprising to see clubs from the mid 2000's performing nearly as well as modern clubs.... they're perfectly capable of hitting the ball virtually as far. The one area where modern clubs ARE better though, is with forgiveness. You can hit some modern drivers all over the face, within reason, and still keep it in play.
@@Stakex well as a new comer to golf I found it very interesting, as brands are tell me and every golfer there a massive difference every 3 or 4 years extra yards etc. So I did find it a stunning result and most importantly shows u don't have to spend 400 plus on a new driver which is great news for people starting off
That Titleist Driver wants to be in your bag..i don't think new drivers are worth it..drivers from 2015 n up are just as good if not better..still love my G25..it's all about what you like..💚✌🏽
I think someone needs to tell Ashly that when she repeats that she's rooting for the underdog, it's not really a secret! LOL. Good video, though. It's interesting that things are that close, but maybe not surprising as the technology that goes into drivers hit the limits of the PGA rules long ago; the differences are on the fringes.
Goes to show, it’s not always about the gear…for certain things. I’ve got 15 year old clubs and still outplay folks who get custom fitted every year. Great video
ebay or clearance rack.. save a buck. I still play callaway Diablo Tour STIFF HABANERO f/ 2009-10 and rip my drives. When accurate longest in my group. Just got r15s in regular shaft to try out.. 2015 lol but my favorite is the ping ist broke a long time ago but recently put a graffaloy blue shaft in it.
For the average golfer who shoots in the 90s to lower 100s high end equipment can be a huge waste of money. For a number of years in the 1990s I used and old set of Wilson K-28 Tour Model irons and shot in the mid 80s fairly consistently while using a generic K-Mart driver and fairway "woods". Around the year 2000 some friends "shamed" me into buying a better set of irons so I dropped $400 on a used set of Ping Irons. What difference did the Pings make? I got worse because the ball flight and distance was totally different and it took most of a summer to adapt to the new (to me) irons. The moral of my story is: Don't assume more expensive clubs will lead to better scores.
Oh B have several new drivers and went back to G5 because I hit it the straightest and most consistent all round rather than every other one I have, I would save the money today doing it over again
Lol i literally upgraded from the 909 D to the stealth last spring. Then when my stealth face broke went back... distance is similar but there is definitely a smaller dispersion on the stealth.
I put my 2007 burner against my 2020 cobra sz once. I could hit the cobra about 15 yards longer but miss the fairway. The burner was consistently in the fairway.
I would track down a Big Berths War Bird 10.5° Driver....and put a nice Senior graphite shaft on it! Playing a scramble with some of my buddies, and on the longest Par 5 on the course ( 570 yards I think ) I hit probably a 360 yard drive! My best friend, scratch golfer, hit a 5 iron to about 3 feet from the hole and we made an Eagle. I don't know why I sold it....but I would definitely keep it in my bag if I had one!
It's tough to do a true comparison without using the same shaft. Good job using what you had. I believe your channel will grow more using this type of content from time to time.
This is crazy, would you recommand this driver for a mid handicap player? i use PING G30 now that works fine but not more than that, I had SIM2 with I didn't like (used to slice all the time) and for 30-4-USD and seeing you hit 290 with it sound like a great deal!
I do believe it's a little over hype to sell expensive clubs,I've had a lot of drivers, but my first one that made a difference in my game was the biggest big bertha,I took my R9 out put the bertha in hit a 305,20 yards longer than the R9,I liked that video.
Love seeing these old vs new comparisons! I still hit my Taylormade Burner and Callaway Diablo Edge Drivers. Recently picked up the Cleveland Classic XL influenced by one of your other videos. Can’t wait to hit that driver!
I have a 10 year old adams driver and a 4 year old Cobra driver and I hit the Adams driver much further. Sometimes 50+ metres (I'm in australia) difference. I tried a few new drivers at a golf store recently with a simulator and there was only a few metres difference between all the clubs. I have a swing speed that is approaching 100mph so it's not slow. I just have to think we are all being conned by the big companies. I have a Lazrus brand 1 iron and I hit that as far as my Cobra driver so that's a bit strange
great video guys... honestly they have come as far as they can with what amount of tech they can put in before it becomes illegal... and honestly i've seen jack nicklaus , ben hogan, and others booming drives with way older clubs in the 300yd range so it really comes down to the swing you put behind it...
I do that same test every spring and newer technology almost always wins but the difference and cost doesn't equal better I love my 2009 Diablo as much if not more than my M5
Proves the point, don't spend a bunch of cash if you already have a fairly decent club that you hit well in your bag currently..the shaft pull probably won't show a lot of noticeable difference..!
Great video. Yeah, those new drivers look sexy, but it's hard to justify that $500 bucks for only a few more yards. Keep the Titleist and spend the $500 on a couple lessons and a bunch of range balls.
Time for you to start doing more cardio , I've found in my swing the shaft made a 3 to 4 mile an hour difference in swing speed. But on a golf course forgiveness is more important the 5 to 8 yards farther in the weeds .
It would be interesting to see you try out a variety of shafts and stiffness to see the impact on your swing. My belief is the shaft may have the biggest impact on distance for an individual .

So I did find it a stunning result and most importantly shows u don't have to spend 400 plus on a new driver which is great news for people starting off
Just goes to show you it’s not so much the club as it is the golfer. Loved the show!!! Keep it up.
Thanks Bryon! Will do 👍😎
That Titleist Driver wants to be in your bag..i don't think new drivers are worth it..drivers from 2015 n up are just as good if not better..still love my G25..it's all about what you like..💚✌🏽
I think someone needs to tell Ashly that when she repeats that she's rooting for the underdog, it's not really a secret! LOL. Good video, though. It's interesting that things are that close, but maybe not surprising as the technology that goes into drivers hit the limits of the PGA rules long ago; the differences are on the fringes.
Also don’t know why I love watching you guys shop so much? Maybe because I’m a south paw?
wow very good.....the Titleist was more consistent and very close in yardage......interesting.....Great stuff!!!
Goes to show, it’s not always about the gear…for certain things. I’ve got 15 year old clubs and still outplay folks who get custom fitted every year.
Great video
A good swing beats expensive gear.
Even if someone is out driven, the better 2nd shot is more crucial to the score on the hole. Imo.
ebay or clearance rack.. save a buck.
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year
Thanks Brian! You too 😊
looks like you need more loft on the stealth . IMO , good video though . hope the shafts were at least similar flex ?
A fun vlog. Like you would choose the Scooby over the Beamer every time.
Stay safe and thanks
Thanks David!
I still game a 2010 Callaway Diablo Octane Tour. I have owned every modern driver from 2016 to now. None have bumped the old Diablo out of the bag
Great show as always LoveYOU guys
Thanks Emory!
Love your videos like this so awesome to watch
Glad you liked it Andrew!
3:00 Stacked Golf! Mixing it up, arnch ya
That was a fun “experiment” 👍😎🤣
@@StackedGolf when “My Golf Spy” started the new vs old series, I think this tech gap is what the people wanted. Bravo to John 👏🏽
I think the winner is............US Great vid again , you guys rock 🏌♂️💥⛳️❤️
Love this! The shaft on that old club is probably better than that "made for" Ventus.
Yep
Keep these coming
I would track down a Big Berths War Bird 10.5° Driver....and put a nice Senior graphite shaft on it! Playing a scramble with some of my buddies, and on the longest Par 5 on the course ( 570 yards I think ) I hit probably a 360 yard drive! My best friend, scratch golfer, hit a 5 iron to about 3 feet from the hole and we made an Eagle. I don't know why I sold it....but I would definitely keep it in my bag if I had one!
Love the club comparisons.
Love this content!😀
Thanks!! Glad you liked it 😁
Those rollout numbers are crazy. They have the ground set to concrete? :) I always just go with carry numbers.
It's tough to do a true comparison without using the same shaft. Good job using what you had. I believe your channel will grow more using this type of content from time to time.
The best way would be getting fit for the best shaft in each club the same shafts may not work as good with each head
Great video, driver tech really has peaked. The difference between drivers performance is much smaller than they inconsistencies of the golfer.
In my mind, the Titleist at $35 way out performed the Stealth driver at $569.
Rick Shields in Florida, u should tweet him, he mentioned u guys before 👍👍👍👍
I used to have a titleist 909 and it was a great driver. Clearly it still is.
i'm still playing that titleist driver and i love it.
Nice! ⛳️👍😎
Love seeing these old vs new comparisons! I still hit my Taylormade Burner and Callaway Diablo Edge Drivers. Recently picked up the Cleveland Classic XL influenced by one of your other videos. Can’t wait to hit that driver!
Love watching your video! Hope you will do giveaway in the future because drivers and clubs here in Malaysia are way to expensive :(
Really enjoyed this one. Yes not scientific but I did enjoy rooting for the titleist.
Mildly scientific 👍🤣
Nice change of pace. It would be really interesting to see both of you hitting and doing club comparisons like this.
That was rather surprising. On my budget I'd pick the Titleist!. Which one felt better to hit?
The stealth had a better feel but not sure if it’s worth the price difference
great video guys... honestly they have come as far as they can with what amount of tech they can put in before it becomes illegal... and honestly i've seen jack nicklaus , ben hogan, and others booming drives with way older clubs in the 300yd range so it really comes down to the swing you put behind it...
The new rules may have an impact. Maybe not. It is often the Archer not the arrow that rules the day.
@@jayherm100 always... A stone tied to a stick and these guys could hit 300+
I do that same test every spring and newer technology almost always wins but the difference and cost doesn't equal better I love my 2009 Diablo as much if not more than my M5
I still game a Titleist 910 D3 withthe Graphite design shaft, haven't found anything better.
