You were right, the last trailer was a suicide mission. Worst part is, that soldier was pretty much trained just for those jobs. Spartans are the super soldiers of Halo, but they were created to police a bunch of overtaxed farmers, after being abducted from their homes at the age of 6 before undergoing a high mortality surgery at 14 to become those soldiers. But as the war with the Covenant began, suddenly they needed more mass produceable ones, ones that they could use to "trade lives for time." All of the heavily armored guys in the last trailer are war orphans on perpetual suicide missions.

Fun fact: The Halo Reach trailer is a canonical "prequel" to the game. As the player you are the replacement (sorry Beth) for that Spartan who did in fact die on that ship. You'll even meet the Spartan who was hit by the banshee and now has a prosthetic arm. I'd also recommend reacting to the trailer "Landfall", an 8 min canonical prequel to Halo 3. As far as playing the games, if you want the FULL Halo experience, you can do it in this order if you're that committed.
    1. Halo Wars (RTS Game, you can just watch the cutscenes if you only want to stick to the first person shooter games.)

Fun facts of the Halo ODST Trailer:
During the funeral and boot camp scenes the commands are given in Hungarian. The song in the background is Welsh. The lyrics to the song are:
Gafflwn Dihenydd O’r fuddugol yn wiriol sydd,
Ni fydd neb yn ein drechu,
    Falch ydy ni I drochu,
    Traed o flaen I’r Annwn,
mewn y gwybodaeth fe godwn ni.
    English translation:
“We cheat Death from his rightful victory.
    No one can defeat us,
we are glad to plunge feet first into (Hell) Annwn<
in the knowledge that we will rise.”
    A couple of points on the translation;
There are a couple of Welsh words for “Death.” In this song the word used is Dihenydd, literally “The Ancient of Days” This is an old Welsh way of personifying death. Making death a person rather than an occurrence or a concept.
Welsh also has two words for “hell” Uffern is the Christian hell, the one of fire and brimstone and eternal torment. The word used here is Annwn, the Celtic otherworld where we go when we leave the mortal world. For warriors who die bravely in battle it is similar to the halls of Odin or Valhalla in Germanic legend. Though Annwn is also a place of rest, joy and delight, for those of a less warlike nature or if you want to take a rest from war. It is a place of punishment for the wicked and in that context can be a grim and forbidding place. Either way, nobody stays there. Eventually we all once again, enter the Cauldron of rebirth. We know we shall rise again.

ODST was definitely a big thing for Halo, since it was the first story where you weren't playing as Master Chief, the big green spartan soldier from the first 3 games. It managed to be a lot more personal, handling a team of very mortal and very expendable shock troopers. Reach, meanwhile, was a lot about sacrifice. Without spoiling much, Reach was a massive loss for Humanity because it was the closest the covenent had come to that point to reaching Earth. The spartans you played as and with in Reach knew they had to put the mission ahead of their lives. I'm sure every military movie and game has a degree of "self sacrifice" for the security of your people...but...Noble Team (the 6 spartans that make up the team in Halo: Reach) were all about ensuring the mission suceeded at any cost. Knowing the story and watching that trailer wells up so many emotions because you know that it's being real with you. It wasn't being teasing or trailer-bait to sell copies...Reach is about loss so that, in the end, Humanity doesn't die.

If you were to play the Halo series, I personally recommend that you don't play it in chronological order. I highly recommend release order. Not only do you see how the series evolves over time, but a game like Halo: Reach has a lot of references and callbacks to previous games, as it was Bungie's last send-off for Halo. It would also be quite jarring to get used to the mechanics of Halo: Reach, then jump into Halo: Combat Evolved with its older style of gameplay. Not to mention various easter eggs and achievement names in Reach only make sense and have more impact if you've finished Halos 1-3 + ODST. For example, there is a an easter egg in Reach where a cameo of a character from Halo 3: ODST makes an appearance. If you play Reach before everything, and you get the easter egg, it's not going to have any significance to you.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames As one of halo's (self proclaimed lol) biggest fans for over 20 years I definitely agree with Rayram and also highly recommend playing them in order of release. As was previously stated, the many callbacks to previous games will go unnoticed and the story might not make as much sense, despite Reach being a prequel. Also, I don't know how much time your willing to invest in playing the Halo series, but if your committed to getting the entire story and plan on playing all the games, definitely start with Halo: CE.
All that being said, Halo: Reach and ODST are not part of the main 'saga', if you will, so if you want to start with one of them its not the end of the world. But please, for the love of all that is holy, play through the original trilogy in order of release (Halo CE > Halo 2 > Halo 3).

Because of that bungie was practically the ONLY developer really pushing new ideas and game play for fps at the time. If you start with reach and then go back to CE not only is it jarring just how different it feels and plays it will be much more of a slog to get through as things like sprint and decent checkpoints you don't even see till reach. Even today the newest halos are criticized for their slower based combat, and it only gets slower and more limiting the further back in the franchise you get.

This was honestly really refreshing to watch. A lot of other people just pick it apart emotionlessly and dissecting the music with a flat face. But Seeing you two watching these trailers in silence, and (Forgive me if im wrong) not knowing the real lore of the series while still giving an emotional response to them is nice. Seeing the small microreactions you guys made with your faces, the small choking down of emotion that she does during the "Believe" trailer to keep her composure. You can see that the trailer (although its only for a game) evokes a certain emotion of pain and sadness followed up by hope. Even in the begining of "Believe", you can see how her face goes from "This music is beautiful" almost immediately to "This looks dreadfully horrifying" (In the way one would view a WWII battlefield) the moment the Set of combat and wartorn soldiers appears on screen. The way the Husband seems to almost do the instinctual male facial movement of rolling your lips back into your mouth slightly with puffed cheeks and jaw, shows the impact of the realization that the male spartan is giving himself up for the greater good. Its gives off almost that "I accept this outcome even if it hurts" feeling. You guys actually reacted more without words than most others could ever with words. And it speaks volumes not only to how well-made these trailers are, but how genuine you guys are with recieving and reacting to content. Props and Cheers.

A lot of care went into all these trailers but in particular For the Halo 3: We are ODST.
The funeral scene was done inside a cooling tower of an active nuclear power plant. The uniforms are from the costume designer that did Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers.
Legacy, a studio that did movie villians like Alien and Terminator used 3d models to recreate the weapons and armor.
My favorite part is that the drill instructors are real Hungarian special forces and they used guns with blanks while the actors crawled under the razorwire. Also, the music is The Politics & The Life - Daniel Pemberton
What's really interesting is the emotion these trailers can evoke from people despite them obviously being entirely fictional, based on a fictional universe.

Great reaction ! Halo is a game that still has a big impact for me. Sometimes I go back and play it all over again. The main focus of the games and the story is about sacrifice, the last stand of humanity - be those few who will shield the others who cannot fight. The Spartans represent these very well. The first Spartans where children that were experimented on for augmentation... most of them died in the process. Master Chief represents the best in the Spartans.
If you plan to play it, considering story, I would recommend:
    - Halo Reach
    - Halo Combat Evolved
    - Halo 2 till the city level (pause at that point)
    - Halo 3 ODST (happens right after the city level in Halo 2 in the timeline)
    - Go back to Halo 2 till the end
    - Halo 3
This is all the Human - Convenant war story arc.
Halo 4, Halo 5 e Infinity is a new story arc.
Also there are in the same universe these other games: Halo wars, Halo wars 2 and the 2 Spartans top down shooters.
Halo Reach is not a a Master Chief game, but it is the direct prequel to Combat Evolved.
    Have Fun !
See you in the Halo Multiplayer :)

Put it this way for you guys the first trailer has master chief a Spartan 2s the best of the best. If you had to go to war you’d want to be one of these guys. they were kidnapped as kids to fight rebels but were instead used to fight the covenant when they made contact with them. the second trailer has ODST (orbital drop shock trooper) the next best thing second only to Spartans, there regular ppl no augmentations just balls of steel. Now the last trailer has Spartan 3’s there war orphans who are so hell bent of getting revenge that there willing to die, there armor/ augmentations are nothing compared to the Spartan 2’s but nothing to laugh at either. The Spartan 3’s were basically used to buy humanity more time and were sent on suicidal missions, trading lives for time I highly recommend watching head hunters it’s good video putting in perspective how scared the covenant were of Spartans matter in fact I might go watch it rn 😂

I love the Halo ODST trailer in particular because I come from Wales (one of the nations of the UK) and the song in the trailer is in the Welsh language. I'm pretty sure it is still the only video game that I'm aware of that has used my native language and I love it for that (plus it's just an incredible game with an incredible atmosphere). The pronunciation isn't perfect but it's close enough. I think I remember someone saying the language the ODST's were using at the funeral and in training was Hungarian, though I may be incorrect about that, I'm not sure.
    The Welsh lyrics are below:
"Gafflwn Dihenydd, o'r fuddugol yn wiriol sydd. Ni fydd neb yn ein Drechu, Falch ydy ni i drochu, Traed o flaen i'r Annwn, mewn y gwybodaeth fe godwn ni.''

Fun fact. IN that opening believe trailer, that is a 1:20th (?) scale diorama that is about the size of a basketball court. It was 6 different large pieces that you could walk around and look at. It was, at the time, the largest diorama ever constructed (its since been beat.) it toured around the country before the release of the game and i had the privilege of seeing it. The detail painted onto some of the marines and covenant in the diorama was simply breathtaking.
I personally think Halo 3's add campaign, "believe" is the best video game marketing that has ever been dreamed up. They made a collection of documentary style shorts that were telling the tale of the war against the covenant through the voices of the veterans of the war some 50-60 years later, and everyone in those trailers is an actual military veteran. Bungie and Microsoft managed to create a world that felt real and lived in and non fiction, before the game ever even came out.

Well, in the Halo games the aliens have been fighting and winning a genocidal war against humanity going on decades. We had colonies through a wide swath of space, but the aliens will show up and annihilate any humans they find. By Halo 2 we've lost everything and the aliens are invading Earth.
So yeah, I'd say that we play the good guys and unfortunately suicide missions like that last trailer become necessary when you're fighting for the very existence of your people.
