Useful stuff, especially on how counterbalance works

Great stuff there! One minor nitpick is that O'Connor 1040 in particular, should be left at 100% counter balance setting when stored for a long time. That is mentioned at the operators's manual page 22. Same goes for Sachtlers.

We always suggest following manufacturer suggestions. O'connor uses a very unique counter balance system (they have a patent on it) that no other manufacturer uses (caveat, some sachtler now use this as they are owned by the same company) so this suggestion would be specific to their design. Many other brands use a band style system and leaving that under load can cause issues in long term storage.

O’Connor says that for long term storage you want to increase the counter balance… Not sure why but it says so in their manuals.

The top handle is packaged together with the cage, and it is the Tilta Sony Venice cage.

So this can get a bit opionionated on my end. However the 1040 is still the best cine head between those two. Keeping in mind that the same company owns both Saschtler, Oconnor, as well as manfrotto and gitzo, so you will see similarities in some cases. Personally I am not a big fan of the Aktiv for cine use. And currently my favorite head in this size range is actually the Miller CiNX5 which has some amazing features we have asked for in a cine head in this size for years.

Why not aktiv for cine uses? Not strong enough? @@DeHavenCamera

@@JoshSmith-ct3fi For the miller I prefer the use of a Arri standard dovetail receiver on the top plate vs mini or euro QR like the 1040. And I do not like the Sachtler ENG style slide plates as they wear out and slip. The Miller also has 4x Arri anti rotation 3/8-16 threads on the base for rigging which is really nice. Overall use is very solid and smooth. The base can be changed from 100mm, 150mm, or Mitchel. And lastly the price is 50% of the 1040
