I can’t believe people saying this isn’t folk music. The arrangement is sublime and the song is very evocative. The people hating on this song are the people that don’t want to see folk music evolve

Folk music by it's very nature changes,Adapts, Absorbs, I rarely see Criticism of Howling Wolf being "not real Blues because He didn't come from Mali, Bands such as Bellowhead, The Imagined Village and The Full English are managing to drag the " English" folk tradition ( almost sadly lost) to a new generation..Good Grief ,Dancing the Morris is becoming cool and the old songs are finding a new life.

Bang on Alan! Anything that pulls new fans into this music can only be a good thing.
OK if 90% wander off after looking for the next "new thing" but some will stay and investigate deeper. It is amazing how many young people have got into sea shanties as a result of Assasins Creed.

I have to admit I'm a purist. So sue me. This is a great shanty and meant to be used for it's cadence for a particular kind of work. But whatever saves these great songs from oblivion is to be welcomed (even if I don't much like it).

Michael Moriarty Awards have to do with popularity. "The Dreadnoughts' based out of Vancouver do a much more passionate version of this sea shanty.

Michael Moriarty folk music is meant to be played and changed by the people not kept in the past by everyone. Of course with it constantly changing not everyone will love every new development but just because you dont like a piece doesnt mean you have to insult others (like myself) who apprechiate bands trying something new like bellowhead

If u don't like it, toddle off & listen to a bloke with his finger in his ear & a flagon in the other hand! Music is supposed to challenge boundaries & evolve. It also needs the oxygen of an audience for it to thrive. Far more people listen to Folk & World Music because of bands like this. Without them & the Oysters, etc, many of those u champion wouldn't make it out of the back rooms of pubs!

In fairness, it's easy to place folk if you view it for what it is and not what people want it or think it to be. Please believe me that my intension is not to be patronising but hopefully you'll see my reasoning.
The reason I believe so is this. Once upon a time, there were the elite who gave patronage to musicians and composers. Ordinary people had their own "Music of the folk".
There was the higher clergy who retained and commissioned composers on behalf of the church to write music in praise of god, (ecclesiastical music) such as the many C17th organ recitals.
Then there were princes who did the same and commissioned court composers to write compositions for example, to celebrate royal/state occasions, one such composer was Handel. This is the world of Classical and Church music and even so called "early music" can be categorised within these genres. This is the music that made its way "from the top....downwards".
But "Folk" music on the other hand is music that has it's origin from within the people. By the very definition of what the term means, be it traditional or contemporary. "The bottom upwards" so as to speak. From Greek Sirtous to African American Blues/spiritual, from Cajun to Morris, from Saami 'Yoike' to the modern contemporary folk of the Joan Baez style. And this is a continuing and changing tradition, influenced by the introduction of other musical influences and new instruments (the clarinet is considered today more of a "folk" instrument in Greece and Turkey but is recent in it's introduction, where as the "Bouzouki" has gained popularity in Irish music thanks to one Johnny Moynihan).
One can even argue that so called "pop" music can be termed "folk" with skiffle blurring the boundaries. (Although much of today's popular music is plastic and manufactured through so called 'hit factories' so I wouldn't call it folk).
For me, it's difficult to call Woodie Guthrey a folk artist without giving Billie Bragg and Tracy Chapman the same courtesy.
And can Folk be allowed to evolve? Well it certainly has in the past. White has become the traditional garb for Morris because Cricket teams in the C19th kept it alive, hence the terms "sides" and "bagman" etc, But who told them then that the wearing of sports clothing was untraditional and too modern and that they shouldn't do it an they cannot be a proper folk dance troop? Even Morris dancing itself is imported middle eastern traditional folk dance that came back with Crusaders hence "Moorish" dance became "Morris".
So I say to Bellowhead good on you. You are only doing with the English tradition what the likes of the Chieftains and Michael Flatley did that made Irish music so universally popular. And why not I say.
