I remember my dad playing this for me, and my brother when we had to go to sleep. Sitting on the bed in my brothers room, and playing the guitar. I get emotional every time i hear it. I love you dad.
This video was the first lesson I looked at when I started playing guitar at the age of 44. The reason being that after listening to The Wall for the thousandth time I realised I just had to learn to play this piece of music. After watching the video with my new guitar I all but convinced myself that I would never be able to play this and started to learn much easier songs. I kept coming back though and with Carl’s brilliant learning style and a lot of hard work I managed it tonight (just 18 months later). I’m that happy that I’ve done something I never do, which is comment on a RUclips video. Still a way to go to match the ease and clarity in which it is played on this video and my new goal is to play it as well as this. It’s gonna be a very long time before I manage that though I’m sure. Fantastic job mate you’ve helped me achieve a dream.
Im with you, one thing i have learnt in playing the guitar is its like anything you do, to get better, you just need to do ONE thing, never give up. Its that simple....
This was the first fingerstyle song I ever learned and I still love playing it to this day. If any beginners are reading this, just keep practicing and it will get easier and easier. It took me a while to learn this song, but when I finally got it down it was so worth it
If any newer guitarists are having trouble with the fingering/hand positions on that first chord change from Am - Fmaj7, I personally find it easier to play the Am chord with my middle & ring finger switched around, so you can just simply slide your ring finger over one fret instead of having to reposition your hand from "Am" shape into that "C" chord shape for the Fmaj7. Hopefully that makes sense. Try this A minor shape - Index finger on 1st fret of the B string, middle finger on 2nd fret of the G string, and your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the D string (normally ring & middle are in the opposite positions for an A minor chord shape). If you play it like that, it means you can simply slide the ring finger over from 2nd to 3rd fret on the D string, without having to lift your fingers off the fretboard and form that new shape. I know it's a very minor variation, but this helped me a ton when I was first learning this song and struggled to change chord shapes quickly. Hope it helps somebody out there :)
I agree that it's easier, but I wish I had forced myself to strengthen my pinky instead of "cheating" like this when I first started. I'd be a better player now.
I'm doing the same thing. It just is easier and quicker and more efficient. Is there a specific reason that in all the tutorials they play it with the ring finger on the B and the middle on the G? Does anybody know?
It’s crazy how this video is 10 years old, this was the first song I’ve learn and if it weren’t for you and this video, I would have probably never learned, so thank you so much
Yeah I was having a bit of a coughing fit while trying to film this lesson. Wasn't ill, just breathed in something that irritated my throat. After ruining a couple takes of the video by coughing I decided in order to get through the whole lesson I needed to use my sexy voice. :)
Yeah it's a compltely new forum software I will be using so the old posts will be gone. It will be much more fully featured except now I gotta get it connected to the regular site so all the memberships work on both sides. Hopefully very soon. Before that though I need to get some lessons done. :)
Just the forum, I didn't think the new forum had enough features. I am re-working it and will hopefully have a new forum rolling within a day or so. Sorry for the inconvenience! :) Carl..
This is a great example of how music can fundamentally alter the way we feel. It's almost like the music from Resident Evil when you go to save the game. We hear it and something within our core tells us something is not okay, but right now, we're safe here. At the same time, we know once we leave this room, the world is out to get us. And at that point, we're sadly unprotected. The end of the song eludes to a feeling of ultimate solidarity. Acceptance of the situation. Amazing.
I have checked out a lot of the tutorials and your is one of the easiest versions to get it right with the least frustration. I personally haven't gotten it all yet, but ever time I get a little closer. Thank you!
Thanks for the very detailed lesson! Came for 10:18, where you explain measure 24, in my opinion the single most difficult scene in this beauty of a piece. And 11:19, the second mini-riff.
Learning from Carl in all his magical lessons I have now learned advanced playing and can now play Asturias. I can't thank you enough Carl. Thanks Carl.
Carl - I've been a subscriber since discovering your lesson for the Pumpkins' 1979. Your lessons are a revelation - accurate, patient, well thought out. These virtues and passage of time will lift your profile and viewers to that of Marty and Justin (you are now the third in the make up my holy trinity of teachers). Its a great service and I'm indebted to you. Pete
An excellent tutorial. It's good that you take it nice and slow and elaborate on the fingering. So many other tutorials are like, "Look, it's played like this!" at full speed. Thanks!
Wow! Beautiful - I’ve been playing this song for years and your version is just PERFECT. There’s nothing Carl can’t do - from a haunting classical Gilmour piece to Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption ... just INCREDIBLE. Great lesson once again.
Wow! That's one of the few things I tought myself, by ear, when I was very young. It's encouraging to see someone else doing it with the same fingering. Nicely done, thanks.
These lessons are so awesome. I just bought a guitar after not playing at all for over 20 years. You make learning these songs simple. I am finally playing (kinda) some of my favorite songs of all time. Just have to practice getting my chubby fingers around the fret board. Thanks again
yesss i'm so happy i've started to play guitar again in this quarantine :) thank u for this ! i remember a few years ago when i told myself that one day i'd learn this, and i started today! i still have a long way to go to play as nice as you but i'm happy i started. thanks :)))))
I'm going over the tutorial for "Coming Back to Life" and this alternately. I'm a beginner but I didn't know I could catch up, all thanks to you. I say Bravo!!!
Carl, I have always considered you to be THE Go To site for youtube guitar vids. You have such a great presentation, demeanor and approach to teaching the material. You remind me of Rik Emmett without the theory and jokes. The vids are always so well done and great songs are picked. Keep up the good work. I just signed up on the site. Thanks!
there'll never be another Dave gilmour, what a beautiful feeling, I love goodbye blue sky aswell.and pillow of winds off the meddle album.thanks for the lesson, I've been playing some of the parts slightly wrong for 45 years.ha ha not anymore.
This solo was written by Joe DiBlasi, a session musician who was brought in for the recording sessions, as David couldn't play this fingerstyle. For The Wall tour, he did play it but with a pick.
fun song to learn man, thanks for the video. I've got about half of it down in just about 15 minutes and looking forward to playing this one for friends. :)
First off , This is a video that i watch a lot , Im slowly getting it , I do wish you used a guitar with dots on the neck however so i could find your place easier .. Liked and subscribed in any case ....
every1 that is having trouble with this?? try learning tiny bits at a time, im still struggling with everything after C but ive made substantial progress just watch it over and over and we'll eventually be a master at it, i know its frustrating lol but you'll get it, by the way thank you for this lesson, its one of the most beautiful songs on guitar and you nailed it
Excellent lesson, thank you very much! Playing along with you playing sounds fantastic, nice finger relaxing at the start.. Studied your fingers very closely and noticed the record button jitters. I use to get that way too when I recorded video. Again thank you very much for this excellent tutorial!
Thanks Dude! I always wanted to learn this song, I started learning guitar two years ago and started w classical guitar so this song was a perfect fit.
This was the first song I learned and I remember it taking forever, I completely skipped that little hammer on pull off and I've just realized it after 8 years
Fun song to play. For me I've found when playing the beginning part when it goes from an F-M7 then you extend your pinkie and play that F# note, it's easier to hold down the low E string on the second fret and use my thumb. Might help others with trouble...
with the a minor chord i suggest swapping your index and middle fingers just so you can easily just slide the middle finger one fret across wihtout letting go of the g string, just my way of playing it : )
Hi Carl, I really enjoy watching your videos and have learned a lot of songs from you, thanks for being so detailed on your lessons, I would really love it if you could do a lesson four Pink Floyd sorrow, that would be the highlight of my new year. Thanks again
This is an amazing lesson, Carl. I really appreciate your style of teaching. When the fingertips on my right (picking hand) heal, practicing this will be a lot easier. :)
YESSSSSSS Thank you for this tutorial! Took me a bit longer than I thought it would but I finally got it to the point where I can play exactly along with you (except for doing that chord right as you do at the end but whatever lol). Thank you, Mr. GuitarLessons365Song, for adding a beautiful song to my repertoire :)
I remember my dad playing this for me, and my brother when we had to go to sleep. Sitting on the bed in my brothers room, and playing the guitar. I get emotional every time i hear it. I love you dad.
what an awesome memory. here's to your dad!!
My dad would always play this it’s such a beautiful piece

Are you still playing Jason. ? I almost have mine like this now.
That’s cool! I’m hoping that I can learn this as well and am fully committed and ready for a difficult time thanks for your feedback on the difficulty
Congratulations, that's is my prefer song, i Hope that my son could plays to me Someday...
No thank YOU for watching! Cheers! Carl..
Cannot thank you enough for posting this, even if it was 7 years ago
2:42 start
5:00 5 string picking pattern x2
repeat 4 string
next 6:37
After 5 string, 4 string, 5 string, half 5 string, pause 8:04
ending 11:57
People like you must wake up in the morning and piss excellence.

This song is so beautiful! I wish it was longer. That's when you know its good, it just makes you feel so different. Thank you!

MrVidsAllDay I do the same
I agree that it's easier, but I wish I had forced myself to strengthen my pinky instead of "cheating" like this when I first started. I'd be a better player now.
MrVidsAllDay try not to muffle the c major pinky hammer on
i won't lie, this is a pretty genius technique

Hey Pete, thanks a bunch for watching my lessons. I hope I can continue to make ones that you enjoy!! Cheers! carl..
Damn that's nice music. This track alone makes me want to learn guitar.
Captain Pugwash have you learned yet?
@@RoundhouseKick27 haha funny that you asked. I gave up i'm afraid after I discovered that I could't make the stretch to barre chords.
Captain Pugwash you could learn it just takes time
@@Captain.Pugwash He's right you know. I picked it up a few months ago and got through my barre chord hump!
@@Harsh-up3ip ☺️ my fingers aren't going to get any longer.. I'll think about it.
my fingers are bleeding but I love you
I hope for your sake that you're joking lol

It's so wonderful not just listen to but to be able to play this piece of beauty thanks for you Carl
Carl, I have ADD badly and have always wanted to learn this properly. You have done it for me.. Many thanks!!
This guy never lets you down! Thank you for all the time you put in.

Best lesson for this song; out there.
Tried 4 other videos first, yours was by far the best. Well done and thank you
Thanks again my bro, sounds awesome.
AWESOME! Best Birthday present I got today other than I bought myself a new acoustic guitar yesterday! Thanks so much for this Lesson Carl.

I've been playing that bit between 1:08 and 1:11 wrong for 14 years..
or maybe he is ._.
At 8:40 I prefer to slide my index finger onto the 3rd fret instead of hammer-on it has much better sound, I think. Nice lesson by the way.
Nika Bakuradze omg you are right. That pinky hammer on was the thing that kept me from playing it smoothly. Great advice.
Nika Bakuradze u right slide sounds nice
but then the other notes stop ringing as you move your fingers away
Jack all of the notes but the base note are open so it does not affect much

I love this song! So Beautiful! I think it's worth the time it would take to learn it!
Great nuances... thanks. Takes me back to ages ago trying simple to early intermediate Carulli and Sor.

Beautiful in such a dark way...

Thanks for the tutorial cheers 👍🍻
Bravo carl perfect
You are FANTASTIC. THANK YOU
This is the first song I've learned the real way to play on guitar, so thanks :)
thanks for this lesson great peace you do a great job of teaching hope you post more fingerstyle lesson
Brilliant work Carl!!
that last chord is my motivation to warm up before playing the guitar
That last chord is HARD.
Andrew Manzano my pinky hurt
its just a "hendrix" e chord with the pinky moved and on different strings.
Easy af*
Try placing the pinky last
