FENTANYL POISONING: Layton Ivins' Story

- Layton Ivins' father and grandmother share their story of losing this 16-year-old to fentanyl poisoning.
___________
YaYa's (Layton's grandmother) words from Layton's memorial service:
Layton James Ivins was our first-born grandchild. I am Lori, Layton’s YaYa. My husband Wayne is Papa.
Layton was a blessing to us from the day he was born, before he was born 16 years ago. He is now Forever 16. We are shattered, broken and numb. There is so much to say but its hard to make sense of the words. Your smile is forever engraved in our memory. Layton’s heart for his family, friends and others was so very big. He knew Jesus and we are comforted knowing he is in Our Father’s Presence.
At no time in my life did it ever cross my mind that I would be standing up here giving a eulogy at my grandsons funeral or writing his obituary.
My heart breaks…
In the days following Layton’s death I was once again sitting on my couch crying. My 5 yr old granddaughter snuggles beside me and asks what’s wrong? I told her I was crying because I was so sad, I would never get to hug Layton or talk to him again. Her parents had already explained what happened to Layton and that he is in heaven. She gently rubs my arm and with the innocence of a child that has not be jaded by this world looks up at me and says “YaYa, you will talk to him and hug him when you get to heaven. Layton is in heaven talking to Annie right now (Annie is her dog she lost a few months back).” I pray that each of you know the innocence of a child.
I had the privilege of being a very involved YaYa in Layton’s and Kylon’s life. I will continue to be very involved in Kylon’s. I make no apologies for that.
When Cody or the boys needed me. School pick up lines, doctor appointments, birthday parties, school functions, teacher meetings, hours at the skate park, trampoline park, music lessons, sports practice and games the list is long.
As high school rolled around it was - bringing him and Ky lunch, or over to a friends house, to work and back, thrift store shopping. I never minded - it was never an inconvenience. It was an opportunity to be part of his life and to always see his smile.
Don’t get me wrong we had our share of heated conversations, disagreements, him not heeding my words of wisdom. But he always parted with a smile and “Love you YaYa”. You see “love ya” was his words after every phone call, when we were in the car, anytime he left. I hear stories from his friends he did this with them as well. Oh, Layton was such a kind, caring, compassionate soul. Even when I brought food at school, he was never embarrassed to hug me and say “love you”.
So I stand here today absolutely confident that Layton is in Our Father’s presence now. No mater if you walk away for a bit, Jesus is still with you.
But my heart still hurts…
Layton’s assignment on this earth is complete. However, there will be ripple effects. Whether it is a reminder to a friend or stranger that one pill can kill and it saves a life on this earth. Yes, Layton died on January 22 from fentanyl poisoning. 1 laced pill. The persons complicit and responsible will be brought to justice. Layton’s death is still under investigation. We will not be quiet. Layton is now one of the hundreds of thousands of faces that died from fentanyl.
Another ripple effect of Layton’s death will be his testimony of Jesus. His character, his love for others, his acts of service, his being the light for someone else’s darkness. This effect will affect many with eternal life. I believe that will be his greatest legacy.
Oh my heart hurts, but I am at peace.
Layton, you are so loved and will forever be missed. Watch over us until we see you again. Forever in my heart. YaYa and PaPa

@@TexasPicturesIt’s a really great concept. Remembering those we have lost and giving the families a place to tell their stories lets people know it can happen to people like us. This can happen to anyone.
@@TexasPictures I hope you know the US government is bringing this stuff in and distributing it throughout the nation.
@@TexasPictures My daughter chased fentanyl her habit got so bad. She saving someone for overdosing so she knew what it looked like. She overdose multiple times. Once with me giving herself CPR. Then I tried to get her not to use alone. There are people users can call so if they OD these people can anonymously call 911. She didn’t listen and died Thanksgiving morning. No one ate that day.
@@tracypaulus very sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing
I live in Alabama. This happened to me 2 months ago. I am an adult that knows better; however, I took what I thought was a pain pill from a friend that got it from someone that I to this day still don't know for a horrible headache. After I took it, I drove home. The last thing I remember is that I went into my bathroom. I woke up the next day in ICU where I stayed for 5 days. Thank God that I am still here and I learned a huge lesson. Never ever again. These stories are so powerful and if only I would have watched them before, I would have never taken ANYTHING from anyone, not even a friend. Praying for these families and friends that have lost their loved ones and having to go through the worst pain. God bless you all.
Just soul crushing. Oh my God. The sparkle in this father‘s eyes as he speaks of his child is like none I’ve ever seen before. He literally lights up and gleams when talking of his son. Everything about him screams wonderful daddy. 😊I am so sorry for this family and their loss. What a beautiful grandmother. What a beautiful family. I hate it for them. This is just awful.
I am so very deeply sorry for your loss. What a wonderful young man! The gift he could have continued to be to the world. We all need to stand with these parents to spread awareness and be a part of the change to save all of our children!
I wish I had 1% of their faith and I'd be content. God bless you both.
It’s possible, all you have to do is ask. Get into the “Bible” get with a solid Christian church. You can have what they have what I have. Jesus is good and faithful.
Me too. I used to have faith but life has taken my faith away. I don’t believe in anything anymore.
The dad shedding tears impacted me more than their ability to discuss this tragedy under a banner of peace. This young man’s life ended. He is gone. His family learned of his death THIS YEAR! In late January, my biggest worry involved a price increase for my delivered groceries. Talk about perspectives. 😢
It can happen to anyone
Same here, I remind my son several times a week with love and education from these videos as he is my life and unfortunately though I am on legal scripts from returning from a incident overseas, and he uses marijuana daily, I fear he will get a laced batch killing him. Therefore education is well needed. I think I am slowly getting to him a bit hopefully.
@@RickyL305Keep on doing what you’re doing. Teens act like they don’t need us but they always do. ❤
I am so sorry for your losses. My heart hurts and cries for you. I lost my daughter when she was three, when she was hit by a car. It's been 42 years and it still hurts. Jesus is the only way to get through the pain of this world 😢❤🙏God be with you all.
@@sciencenotstigma9534 .. exactly and thank you. God bless you and your family!
"I'm talking Jesus here" ... I love this. His baptism story is amazing !!! 🙂Dad, your example of going to church after knowing the news. From my heart, thank you for doing that. Thank you for your story, and I'm so sorry for your loss. It is being shared. I'm working with the Assistant Principal of my local high school to make sure they are doing something about this and volunteering if they need help. Father to a 16 and 12 year old ... I must do anything I can do to help.
And Grandma, I love your message. You are right. Death is not the end of Layton. 1 THES 4:13
This poor Dad, worked so hard holding back his emotions 😭 my heartfelt sympathies! 🙏🏼
Mhm… His dad running to the Church says a lot…. God is a healer, He really is.
I love how strong their faith has been going through this tragedy. Peace be with them through this horrible time. 🙏🏼
It's obnoxious. I would've taken drugs being forced in that environment as well.
The pain this family must be going through is unimaginable but I’m so thankful they’ve found comfort in the Lord. A few years ago I came to the realization of the truth of Jesus Christ that he is real and is exactly who he claimed to be in the Bible. That doesn’t mean we don’t feel the pain but he’s with us walking through it and comforting us. This life is so hard sometimes and I just pray that everyone find peace in Christ Jesus and what he accomplished for us on the cross when he said “it is finished”
HEy rand, what a thing to say....imagine looking at the world around you and believing it could all come from nothing. Advancements in genetic research over the last couple of decades pretty much proves that life has intelligent design. DNA is literally your genetic code written by your creator...look up and research the molecular machines that are programmed by that creator to carry out all their specific jobs to keep your cells alive and your body functioning... a famous brain researcher described the brain as a machine that a ghost/ spirit can operate. You are more than Just a body, you are a spirit that is living in and operating that body. It’s amazingly complex.
And Jesus Christ is the God of all creation (who is a spirit )and who entered into his phisical creation and lived a perfectly sinless life and died for my sins and your sins so you and I could be reconciled to God.
If you reject Jesus and all that he’s done for you then when you die you have to take your own punishment for sins...
@Sheli - AMEN. 🙏🙏🙏
@@dylantaylor8263 - AMEN. GOD BLESS.
NO, NO, NO! I refuse to accept it. He was only 16 years old, my son's age, and it scares tf out of me! This NEEDS to stop!
I don't have the solution, but somehow the government does. Thank you Texas Pictures Documentaries!
This is so sick !
Hi I’m 28 and went through school drug free, i only ever cared about being my own person I had insecurities but it was never about fitting in. I think you should always try to make your son feel confident, let him know he can trust you, be realistic but not overbearing about the consequences and how bad drugs have gotten. If he’s a leader make sure he’s leading with the right information, if he’s a follower make sure he’s following someone with good intentions. Idk if this is helps but good luck, I wanna see the next generation stronger
Sadly, I fear the government so does not have a solution. And my greatest fear is government is not looking for a solution.
If government had the answers, then why is drug abuse skyrocketing around the globe? It's too easy to blame government for this issue!!!
I think the government needs education, as well, and hear that we’re aware of the problem and need effective solutions. We have to stand up and fight for our families.
True faith displayed here🙏🏽🫶🏻🙏🏽
I am so sorry for your loss. I know this loss as we lost our 28-year-old in 2013 from an accidental overdose. There is NO WAY I could have made it without the comfort and peace that our Father in heaven provides through Jesus. Thank you for sharing your story.
I am so sorry about the loss of your son, grandson and brother. Please know that we appreciate your telling this story. I wish you healing and peace.
Tragic and very sad. Please kids, don't experiment with drugs. It's a no-win situation.
Peer pressure at that age is the hardest.
don't forget the biggest killer of all drugs, alcohol.
❤❤❤
The channel Vice has many videos on this crap, good to know though.
kids are under immense pressure peer, school, to be cool. In high school all my click experimented...I didn't. My parents drilled it in me-you try it, you are hooked ONE TIME. It will ruin your life. Invest in the books, not drugs or boys (school will give you a better return). Confidence is key. The war on drugs starts and ends with PARENTS -and then the schools. You can't say to a kid....pleaee don't do drugs. That's not profound enough to get through to them. They need to REALLY KNOW AND SEE THE CONSEQUENCES. My parents scared me into not trying and I'm so glad they did. It saved me. I am now an attorney. My click is in jail or no life, bums and addicted to drugs. Don't be scared to educate your kids. Knowledge is power.
8:57 "One pill can kill." That's the slogan right there.
I have such respect for this family for reaching out to educate others despite their profound grief.
As a father of two sons (10 and 8) I was highly impressed how „settled“ Layton‘s father was as he told the tragic story of his son’s death. When he got overwhelmed by his emotions at the end of this video, oh boy that was really tough to watch cause I almost had to cry also.
I hope Layton‘s family will always have the faith on their side, and without judging someone by his religion they can be happy that they believe in God and Jesus, because it helps them to overcome the pain and grief.
So sorry for them, because it sounds like Layton was a really talented and gifted young man. I do only play two instruments (Drums and piano), I always have the highest respect for people who are able to play even more instruments.
And, I said it again and I will say it every time I watch a video from this series, thanks for making these episodes and I really hope they can and will prevent kids/teens/adults from dying because of only one pill.
„One pill can kill“… and one pill will kill, so please please please: Keep that in mind and don’t take any medicine/medications if you aren’t prescribed to them. I assume (and hope!) that no doctor will prescribe Fentanyl at all.
Again: Thx to „Texas Pictures Documentaries“ for making this series 🙏
With sad regards from Germany 🇩🇪, Philipp
Great comment. I must agree. Only take prescribed meds, one pill can kill. Some folks don't metabolize certain pain meds tho so fentanyl very hard to get as an RX as so many people have abused pills including fentanyl. Someone in severe, real pain (not just taking a pill to feel high) can't even get it legally anymore much unless ithat has changed. There are too many people who can't handle emotional pain so turn to drugs or alcohol.
Thank you for your comments.
IMO Every state or country affected by Opiates or other drugs and even mental health should produce such documentaries. Thanks Texas Pictures Documentaries .
@@DavidJones-ib3zy David, you are right, 100 percent! 🙏 Without knowing the stats behind „Fentanyl Poisoning“ here in Germany, even „we“ should produce such strong and powerful episodes to prevent a crisis. Fentanyl deaths or opiate deaths in general aren’t in the news at all (again: Here in Germany), but our News coverage or the News content in general is very different from the News in the US.
I really hope that this channel will have an immediate and direct impact on people, the people and the government, so that the deaths because of Fentanyl poisoning will go drastically down, not up!
Fingers crossed!
Best regards from Germany, Philipp
@@zenawarrior7442 Thx a lot Zena, I really appreciate 🙏 I hope my written English is okay enough because (for obvious reasons) I‘m not a native English speaker 🥴🥴 And you are right, only take prescribed meds, nothing more. And if you need more, then talk to the Doctor and let him decide what to do. Don’t buy „street stuff“, even from people you know and/or from people you trust, because even they can’t judge if a pill contains Fentanyl.
I had to take opiates a few years back when I underwent three surgeries on my lower back because some discs were kind of destroyed after I had a very serious car crash. So the doctors had to stabilize my lower back with 8 titanium screws and that whole procedure was painful, to say the least 😳
BUT: I only took pills which were prescribed to me from a special doctor, I got my pills from the pharmacy and if I had the feeling that the pills weren’t „working“, I told my doc and he decided what to do. I never ever had the wish/drive to buy one or more pills from anyone, and after the healing process was over I slowly reduced the amount of pills/medicine until the point where I didn’t need opiates anymore.
So I know „a bit“ about opiates and they aren’t „a joke“, hell no!
Have a nice day (or evening, wherever you are), and kind regards from Germany, Philipp 👋
Your beautiful boy sounds like a gorgeous human❣️
I found such comfort in this video. On truth💕 losing a child is beyond the worst heartbreak you can ever feel. I pray no one else feels this grief. 🥀
I love this lady. What an incredible influence she must be to her family and a testament to the power of Jesus. I pray for the poor dad, it’s awful what this poor family has been through. Please Lord end the suffering of our children with these drugs. Thank you guys so much for this ministry and spreading the word. I’m sure you’ll never know the impact you had until you get to heaven and the book is opened and you see the lives you have touched and saved. God bless.
What a powerful way for his father and grandmother to relay this tragic story. God bless y’all and RIP Layton ❤ I am so sorry for y’all’s loss.
Thank you for sharing your heart wrenching story.
What a beautiful young man. He smiled with his eyes.
I'm so sorry for your incredible loss. May your faith guide you through your loss and pain, and your memories of Layton live on forever. 🙏
That's one strong dad. So much to admire within that man. Thank you for telling Layton's story.
Grandma you did the most important thing for him and that was made sure he knew about Jesus. One day you will see him again. These videos where these kids take one pill it's just really breaks me down. He had a good Daddy to you can tell. Sorry for your loss!!
Thank you for sharing his story. He was a loved boy. Rest in peace little man❤️.
This absolutely breaks my heart. Layton and his younger brother look like twins. I’m so glad you have your faith to help you cope.
Thank you for telling Layton’s story. He is and was so much more than how he died.
People need to know experimenting with drugs is a thing of the past. And fentanyl is a death sentence.
ONE pill can kill.
RIP Layton and God bless his loved ones left behind. 🙏🏻💔🙏🏻
Dad, don’t ever apologize for your tears. That was your baby .😢
I admire you for sharing your Faith and Reminding us that we can not do life without Our Lord and Savior! My condolences for your family, but your strength and faith will help someone else.
So, so glad he loved the Lord.❤️ when I listen to these videos, the first thing I am thinking is, were they saved? Did they know the savior? So when you shared about taking him to church and camp.… And getting baptized, my heart was so happy for him. You will see him again. I am so sorry for your loss. I just cannot even imagine your pain. Thank you for sharing his story.
That's exactly where my mind goes to, as well. Even though a person is saved it does not mean that they won't make mistakes. We are just sinners saved by grace.

God bless these wonderful people for sharing there story to try to help save others.
It was a very open conversation in my house too. Lost my oldest son at 31 to fentanyl. It feels like a bad dream that I can't wake up from.
Very talented young man who's gone too soon! I'm thankful to hear that he was a Born Again Christian. We have HOPE. Someday, very soon, you will see him again ✝️🙏
Your son was a treasure and I would NEVER pass judgment. This is just part if growing up and exploring in a dangerous world. Our era was alot safer. He is in God's hands now, so take great comfort ❤
Y'all are precious, and so is your precious prodigy son, thank you for sharing this story , prayers going up for you , I know he's with Jesus❤

I'm sorry for your loss ❤
They really didn't say anything of the incident. I doubt it was the only time he experimented statistically speaking. It is best to never start, not weed, cigarettes, pills, alcohol, etc.
Heartbreaking. I love love love the spirituality of his grandmother. His father was trying hard to stay strong but you can tell the love for his boy is huge and the wound is deep. God I can relate so much. The love of a father for his son is like no other. God bless that entire family.
My FAITH IS WHAT CARRIES ME!!! Lord have mercy on us all
It feels good to know he knew Jesus and I thank God that the family is rooted in God. I pray that God keeps holding you in His hands, to be there hen you are weak and strong and to keep you moving... These stories are just so heartbreaking
Love the fact this child is saved and with Jesus, but so sad his life ended so drastic. Prayers and strength for this family!
These stories are tragic. I feel so bad for those left behind.
His dear little face and bright smile. His poor family must miss him beyond the telling of it, as must every parent who loses a child. It’s absolutely heart breaking. So sorry for your loss. ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss. God rest his soul. God please give these loving souls comfort and strength. Amen.

You could really just tell that Layton’s dad is holding in a lot of pain, heartbreak, emotions, and grief. You see it push it’s way out at the end when he breaks down 💔
I really hope that he is getting the right support to help him. I know he talked about having to be strong for his other son, but it’s ok to be sad and to let yourself break down sometimes. What they are dealing with is so unfair and truly devastating.

I just love you guys. He was a lucky kid to have you as a dad, and grandma. You’ll see him again in heaven. ❤️
Awareness is so valuable!
EDIT: I didn'trealize until after my comment that the woman is the grandma.
I've watched so many of these videos, which are completely heartbreaking. But I can't say that I've watched any like this story. The importance of raising children up knowing The Gospel and The Lord is really in my opinion, immeasurable. It brings me joy knowing and hearing these two parents speak of the peace they have because they know where their son is and with who, and the know that they will see him again. I can truly feel their peace.
I can't tell anyone what to do or how to raise their children, but I do believe that nothing is more important that knowing and having a relationship with The Lord and raising their children in the same way. It will not completely take away your sadness, and you will miss your loved one, but it's so much easier to accept the Will of God if you ever go through something like this. God bless this family and all those who have lost a loved one in a similar way. ❤🙏
Perfectly said. The most important thing in the world is salvation and the blessed hope.
Just like the grandma said, if we don't have Jesus, who do we turn to?
Sorry for your loss , I truly don't know what else to say , God Bless & Y'all are great for keeping the Faith in this hard time. DJ In N GA

Just one pill. It's an all too familiar story. It happens to so many innocent people. It happened to my very best friend. Our bond was like sisters and could never picture my life without her. I just recently saw her for the first time in 2 years. I have had to grieve our relationship. Her life will never be the same, she will never be the same and our friendship will never be the same. It effects many many other people than just the immediate family. 😢
I’m so sorry for your loss I know your heart is hurting in your world is shattered just manifesting positive and hugging you and your whole family
I agree with you, I don’t know how people get through these tragedies without their faith. You will see him again ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ What a beautiful legacy
These children are all spectacular.

Thank you for telling your story. I'm so sorry for your loss. Amazing kids can also die. That's the sad truth and telling Layton's story might save another child from dying. Thank you.
What a special and talented young man! I never met him, but I feel robbed that this bright light did not get to grow and impact the world like he would have. I've heard that some people are just too good for this cruel world. We are left with the pain of loss, but we must be at wonder that he was chosen for eternal life at such a young age. May his memory and God's peace forever comfort you.
RIP little man!
Nothing I can say will bring your beautiful son/grandson back, but it you can save one life it's worth it. Brave family. 🙏🙏
