Air conditioner tips & tricks from a hot human that doesn't like to be hot!

- Due to the high costs associated with installing a full house central AC system or permanent installed split AC unit I've opted to use multiple portable air conditioners overs the years both Window units and floor standing units strategically placed throughout my house to give me more control over the humidity and temperate of those spaces. This little video will show you some of the tips and tricks I use to optimize my portable AC effectiveness cooling my spaces including some clever little tricks you may not have thought of. Since this is a short comedic video in addition to being education and informative I've included lots of extra information in the video description to help you out.
Here are a few of my all time favorite portable floor standing AC units
Whynter ARC-145SH Floor Standing 14,000 BTU AC with built in heater (heats & cools)
amzn.to/2Jt5ct1
This is my all time personal favorite floor standing AC unit because it's duel hose design means it pulls in air from outside to absorb the heat then exhausts it out of the other tube keeping the pressure in your house neutral instead of single hose units which pull air from inside of your house meaning that it has to create negative pressure in your home by pulling in more hot outside air through cracks under doors, around windows and through your bathroom vents. This kills the efficiency of those units and also ends up pulling in smells from your neighborhood, etc which is unpleasant sometimes. This unit also doesn't need a drain hose because it circulates the moisture collected back outside. This model also has a heater built in so it can pump heat into your room in the cold winter months so you don't have to heat your entire house using your furnace to save on electricity if you want your bedroom toaster than the rest of the house for instance.,
*Whynter ARC-145S Floor Standing 14,000 BTU AC without heater
amzn.to/2LDgIEV
This unit is identical to the previous one but it doesn't have a heater built in so it lacks that mode, weighs less but has the same cooling capacity and looks identical to the previous version. If you live somewhere that heating isn't necessary save a few bucks or potentially even buy a stand alone little space heater and store this unit away in the winter months. I also would like to mention I've used these Whynter AC units for 3 years now without any issues and they consistently produce the same cooling capacity year after year unlike my cheaper single hose units that failed me approximately every 2 years.
LG LW1517IVSM Window Air Conditioner, 14,000 BTU, White Ultra Quiet
amzn.to/2Xy5WqL
I just recently purchased this new dual inventor AC unit for my main living room space to cool the kitchen, living room, dining room and loft. This is my 5th high BTU unit I've purchased over the course of about 18 years living in this house and I have to say the first thing that blew me away is how quiet this unit it. Window AC's are generally quieter than floor standing units in most cases but this Windows unit even with 14k BTU cooling capacity is no louder than the fan moving the air. It puts out ice cold air very quickly and you can't really hear the compressor at all plus it's much more efficient on electricity because of the new design. It's very easy to install in any window that can accommodate it's size and I just recommend you get a ledge support bracket if your on a higher floor or simply place a 2x4 cut to length under it if it's on the ground floor to support it's weight. Build quality is top notch and it even supports Wifi, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant (possibly even IFTTT) to make it more friendly to work with. I also like how small the GFCI breaker plug is on the unit, they generally are obnoxiously huge.
Windows AC support bracket if you're installing in a 2nd floor Window

Very cheap ultra quiet USB fans are a must have for staying cool and moving air around
• The most useful USB fa...
Watch this video and see all the wonderful applications for these cheap fans including personal cooling when you don't have access to an air condition. I also highly recommend placing them on your night stand while sleeping on hot nights to keep a silent genital breeze on you to help you sleep better. I also like how the little breeze generated from mine helps to circulate the AC cool air around the room and spread it out more uniformly.
Insulating dict sleeve for both single hose and duel hose portable AC units
amzn.to/2XvYWdL
These are a must have for floor standing units, the hoses without these sleeves installed will radiate a ton of heat back into the room working your AC unit harder and making it less efficient!

I've been feeling a little more like myself lately and just having fun making these little videos in iMovie for fun while I get some stuff done around the house. I hope you guys enjoy them and don't take them too seriously. I also highly recommend you check out the video I posted on my Twitter feed about "Twitter in real life" It's actually quite funny and I may post it on the channel at some point but it's a little too not work safe to post here 😁
Barnacules Nerdgasm no need to fix anything in 2020.
Which headphones? I'm a bit of a headphone lover myself.
You're right, it will mostly fix itself 😁
You ALWAYS crack me up, LOVE IT.
@DMoney Industry Sony makes some very respectable cans!
WOW, i have not seen one of your videos in almost a decade !!
Regardless of content or topic nice to see you on screen again. Your missed by 99.99999999% of your followers!
That's way more than I thought missed me so I'm happy with that results. I won't ask what math drew that conclusion 😁
Jerry, these are the kind of videos that i enjoy watching by you. If you can, make them longer. The longer the better. Like the washing machine video. I was laughing so hard i was crying.
I decided to use asbestos instead of fibre glass is that ok Jerry?
Only if you want your lungs to stop working 😁
if you cant afford central ac but want the convinience of one for cheap, invest in a mini split system, they're not that much more expensive than window ACs and they can also do heat
Hey barnacles i own this very same ac and another "upgrade" i did was get rid of the the flimsy plastic that goes in the window and bought half inch redwood board painted it white and put the matching holes and 3d printed adapters to fit the hoses and saw a better temperatures inside 👍
You're hilarious, You need your own "This Old House" show! - would watch the hell out of that!
You would watch it until it caved in on me hahaha.
What if I am fat and an asshole, will these tips still work?
🙂 yeah i feel you, here we try not to use AC, instead we have several large industrial size fans to move air thru the house and thru the attic, also shorts and tank tops go a long way as well 😊🏠
I can't live without my central AC! The hour it took me to fix it a week ago was like being in hells sauna!
Nice to see you feeling better again, keep it up.
People say Nevada is too hot because it is 110deg in the summer. Nope, Much easier to cool here than somewhere like Washington State or Tennessee. We have well water which means free water. Two swamp coolers, which is basically a fan and a water pump. I can get the house to 72deg on a hot day by blowing air over some wet straw. Very few humid days here, but we do have AC backup for when it does rain a few days out of the year. The best part is that you can use the screen door as an outlet for the air and sit on the porch outside all day if you want. It was crazy moving here after hearing all the myths about the desert. Winters here are comfortable also. I think we had to use heat for one month out of the year.
this is the best video i've seen in a long time.
I remember watching you get lay-off from Microsoft couple of years ago, knew you were done fine on RUclips !! Congrats on almost 1 million sub
Thank you sir! I've taken some breaks here and there but who can stay away from amazing comments like this!
I miss your videos my man. I'm glad you're putting stuff out again, I hope it continues. If there's any way I can help, let me know.
Oh no, Jerry has TDS.
This was honestly one of the funniest videos I’ve seen in awhile. Totally unexpected and made a bad day much better. Thank you
DO NOT clean your filters with a brush. Those things are directional, which you will notice when you rinse the filter with water, like you should. the water will pass through freely on one side, won't do that on the other. If you use a brush you may damage that layer.
Also, spray some antifungal on the evaporator (the cold radiator) about once a year.
If you have a split AC (there is a unit on the inside and a unit on the outside connected to it), you should pressure-wash the condenser (the hot radiator in the outside unit) about once a year. Make sure you hold it straight at the fins cause you might bend them if you hold it at an angle.
He's talking about brushing the radiators, not the filter itself. The radiators are aluminum stacks which won't be seriously damaged by a brush.
All of these AC units have flat fits, you're talking about industrial units. I've used this method for years with great success but usually use a wire brush but my wifes brush was funnier so we rolled with it. As for the anti-fungal that is a fantastic idea and I'm totally adopting that, thank you 👍
Also, you can't really pressure wash a condenser in a floor standing AC without dismantling the entire thing and dragging it outside so I setting for compressed air and the brush method, but I do totally use my pressure washer with a low pressure nozzle to clean the window units 🙏
@@Barnacules Fair warning tho, the antifungal stinks like hell for hours so be prepared to not use the unit for a bit so that it doesn't fan it across the house. BTW. Thanks for responding. This is so cool!
I love that homes in the UK don't need ac units, a lot less messing around :)
I lived in Seattle from 1998-2005 and only had AC in one apartment (flat, as you Brits call them). Seattle and England are very similar, weather wise.
Last time I was over there it honestly was mindblowing. Here in the states I cannot imagine life without AC, but when I was overseas, no AC but everything felt fine. If the AC goes out over here then your house can get hotter than outside temps depending on insulation, and the humidity makes it so miserable, carpet will get sticky and nasty from it, it is a total must, standard of living to have AC here for sure.
This has aged very well.
@@Altezza1999 Haha that’s amazing I sure wish I had AC now!
I wish I could have as much fun doing anything as you did making this video.
Thanks Jerry! :)
What makes it epic is that I genuinely had fun making this video. The trick to just making videos of stuff you're already doing is that you're already passionate and having a good time. When you have to make videos to meet schedules or go for those dollar bills (we all have to do it eventually) it just doesn't have that same passion.
Yay I’m glad you’re feeling better and glad to have the funny videos back. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
You are genuinely my favourite person on the internet
Thanks Barnacules, until you mentioned it I didn't realize my portable ac had a filter and needs to be cleaned.
Michael L Saving the world 1 AC at a time
So, to get my indoor AC working at peak efficiency, I need to wear a gardening hat and squirt hot sauce on my hose. Got it. Thanks for the tips; my life is better already. For reals. :-p
You watched the whole video! Here, have a hug 🤗
Doooood more of this PLEASE
Funny as hell. You should do more of these.
I wanted a window ac so bad because our hvac went out but we can't afford the electric bill for a window ac so I'm just gonna buy a window fan instead. Using a lasko box fan right now, loud as fuck & barely pushes any air.
Welcome back Jerry!!! It’s epic to see you posting!
My man huge fan been watching for years love ur content and videos feel like we can relate keep yourself safe
Nice to see you’re posting again.
Best wishes for the future
I just subscribed because of this video. This was fantastic 👏
I didn't know about the dual hose units!
Pro tip : Take a cold shower after fiberglass exposure.
Keeps your pores from opening up, and really cuts down on the itching 👍

As for window AC units. First off avoid the ones that have the evaporator and condenser coils wrapped in stuff that looks like Christmas tinsel garlands but is actually more like razor wire. There is no way to clean dust and dirt built up out of those effecively. Get the ones that look like mini car radiators. Secondly, you need to clean the built up crap out of the coils at least once a year. The filter on the evaporator side (inside) will keep the worst of of those, but the condenser side is pulling outside air in the sides and blowing it through the coils. You can probably do an ok job with just a hose and pressure nozzle, but I always pull the case off mine and make sure it's totally clear. This also lets me make sure there's nothing in the lower tray that will plug the drain hole for the condensed water. In a lot of cases, when one of these units starts not working well, it's not because the compressor is bad or it's low on freon, it's because there's what looks like a quarter inch of felt blocking air from getting through the condenser coils.
All of this random anti Trump/Conservative rhetoric as of late is sorta turning me off to your channel. Seen it on twitter, and now I see it on RUclips. As much as I love your content man, isolating a good portion of your audience like that is risky. Instead of unsubbing I just wanted to at least give some feedback, that said, you keep doing you. If you want to bash political standpoints on here and promote negative political stereotypes then more power to you, just seems risky.
Glad you are back.
I'm not even a huge fan of Trump and agree. I like to get away from politics for awhile.
@@UberStarFkr Same, I am used to Barnacules being a breath of fresh air in that regard.
Agree, I hate Trump, I think he is an absolute buffoon, but I keep it out of my content because I respect other peoples views as much as I disagree. He lets it affect him way too much
Do a video on converting a single hose to dual hose, measure the difference etc. Would make a cool video, using tje 3d printer to make ducts, etc.
Great to see him making videos like these they're lots of fun
its good to have you back jerry.
Jerry, I loved this video. Keep it up!
the wife hairbrush thing is sheer gold
Another quality video. Love it

Love you Jerry!
Yay were large and in charge... Of the AC unit!
This video made my day, I couldn’t stop laughing.
Yeh, almost makes me want to convert my Windows 7 PC to a Windows 10, because it may be cooler in the HEAT of Texas summers :-)

Shit, I knew I forgot something!
Bruh I living in in Florida with the heat index being over 100 every day I needed to see this. Much love Jerry. I'm glad to see you doing well!!!!
I'm slowing coming back from the dead man. It's been a terrible 5 months since this blood clot thing combined with some mental stuff really threw me out of the game. But, as it turns out, time heals all wounds.
Outside air intake isn't bad. You get fresh air mixed in, but if you want it cooler, I'd recommend you let the intake suck air from inside the conditioned space. preferably from as high as possible.
Actually, the outside air coming in goes through a sealed compartment and never actually goes into the house. Also, the units with a single hose that take air from inside the house create a negative pressure which pulls in equal amounts of warm air from outside through cracks all over in your house. Check out my video description, it's almost hilarious that companies still sell the single hose design but people like them because of how much easier they are to position with a single hose and it simplifies the cost in building them so they are cheaper. But the duel hose design is always best, I did quite a bit of research on this one because I was curious after owning so many single hose designs that didn't work nearly as well and sucked way more power for the same BTU output.
@@Barnacules ah. I see, it's for the condensor. I thought it was for the evaporator. That's why I said what I said. Cooling 90° plus air is not as effective as cooling the air in your home is what I was getting at
@@full95one That makes perfect sense, luckily the air that is being pulled in from outside will tend to have a bit of a heat sink effect with the cooler inside of the case transferring some of the heat but I bet it's a neutral gain overall when you factor in the whole system.
That was pretty funny, thx for the morning laugh
Loved the video format, as well as the techkeys shirt!
A 2nd mortgage will provide you the funds you need for central A/C.
I have a small house, but around 5K did it for me. Certainly not cheap, but not outrageously expensive.

Codegasm was my favorite part... ☹️
I loled at the bare hands on fiberglass-thing.. =D
A video? From Jerry?! OMG I LOVE THIS TIMELINE AGAIN!
Portables suck only the dual hose ones are good. Nothing like a window ac
I literally have the EXACT same unit! That was the cheapest one on Amazon. Ironically, it's the same price as our lower btu pinguino unit from Costco that only has 1 hose.
Awesome fun, keep them coming
This is the first time i have seen one of your videos.......dude you are good...keep it up...
....what about the condensation?
what about it. or was this a rhetorical question. you DEAL with it. jeeez
A decent model will spray it into the condenser which will evaporate it and send it out the hot hose. Others just have a tank you empty.
You can buy insulated hose for portable air conditioners on Amazon. My house don't have sash windows like yours though. The top half of my windows swing outwards so a window AC is out of the question. I have a single hose ac and it does radiate the heat back into the room. I bought a silver foil hose for it which doesn't get as hot as the hose that came with it but I'm going to buy some insulated hose instead.
I am venting the hot air out a hole in the wall in the next room (There's no hallway separating the room) and the hose is 15 foot long so wrapping it is not an option.
@MEGA NZ I bought it on amazon.
Great video Jerry! Some nice humor in there
This totally makes me wanna start doing videos
Good to see you.
Great seeing you again, Dude.
No central AC? Try living in Mississippi, AKA Satan's armpit.
better try hell in Norway
LOL just open your window in Dubai, fresh sauna with tan.
Bought single hose couple years ago, without knowing much about mobile ac. Top trick: toss it in the trash.
That or Mod it... I don't get why those were even a thing.
Why is the single hose so bad? I never used one, just curious
@@lubomirbrousek194 the reason they're bad is, that you use room air to cool down the radiator (hot part of the ac), what means you are dumping air which already has been cooled down out of window, sucking new hot air from outside.
On dual hose, you suck air via one hose, cool off radiator and send it out using another one - thus the room is isolated from the outside world.
@@peterpepo9232 Oh, thank you. I never thought about that
I enjoyed this video. What it lacked in topic it compensated with humorous execution. I give it 7 out of 10 sweaty cracks. 👍🏼

Ok why does youtube remove the notification alerts on my sub box. Really i didnt even know this video was up.
lol this was good, glad youre making videos again
whaaaaaat you're back!!!
You look like a Canadian Mountie with that hat and red t-shirt Jerry. Just an observation. Welcome back to YT
My dumbass got the single hose model. I wonder if there's a way to convert it into the two hose model. I took the back off of mine and the chassis is made like the two hose models. It has the cutout for another hose inside but the back cover just has the vent on it.
@Lassi Kinnunen It's going to have to be a very wide hose... The vent is as big as the unit is wide.
This one and the Jayz video are a return to old Jerry. Please make more.
The nice hat makes all those tips and tricks much more believable. So happy to see you back here!
I thought the hat would lend some credibility 😁
A bit sad you quit your diet.
Well it's not easy. :P
@@s1gnex Neither is open heart surgery.

some info. some people think it is impossible or impractical to put a window unit in a side-sliding window. it's NOT. you just need to figure out what baffles are needed; and Make 'em from cardboard or thin plywd. if it is not permitted or practical to put it in the window, put it on a stand, inside, aligned with a window. make necessary duct/baffles (cardboard, again) to mate-up with the window. and take steps to deal with the condensation. i did it this way, for several years, when living in an apartment. obviously, home security is a factor, in the implementation of these ideas. cheers googletranslate
WOW! i mean just fucking WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! legit was about to start searching for ways to better keep the cool air in better for my apartment and BAM!!!!! this video!!
GODBELSS YOU SIR! GOD BLESS
This is why I'm subscribed! Good to see ya back
Love to see you back!!! Miss you bro...
Thank you so much!
Why didn't you just get a window type air conditioner if you aren't actually gonna move it much (especially with all the effort you put on the exhaust: that thing is no longer 'portable' )? They aren't that expensive nowadays.
Portable one are also half as efficient
But since he got a dual hose one and insulated it it's not as bad and about the same as a window unit
Hey Jerry. One thing you didnt mention was noise. Just how loud is that portable unit? I was seriously thinking of getting one until my research brought up the noise issue. My main concern is that I'm thinking of doing YT content so I'm concerned about noise. My HOA doesn't allow for outside window units. We have central air but my game room gets warm compared to the rest of the house so that's why I been looking into a portable a/c unit to help cool it down. I live in Florida btw.
Loud af. At least my single hose unit.
Consider a mini-split.
@@TexMex421 Yeah I been looking into that as well.
I'm kind of an expert here on mobile airco. You need to block that sun out from the outside of your window. Those window blinds on the inside are useless. A white piece of canvas works best. Avoid any bends i the exhaust. You got your exhaust bend in an s shape which will reduce efficiency.
cool very cool
Honestly just avoid the "portable" ones if at all possible unless you absolutely need them. They are half as efficient, twice as expensive and just a pain in the ass.
You're better off just taking the money you'd spend on a portable AC and putting it towards a more a powerful window AC and some cheap standing fans. Crank up the window AC and use the fans to direct the excess cold air to the areas you would want a portable AC for.
I wish I had known about dual hose ac before I got my portable ac.
Nice man ;-) don't stop now ! keep it going
Hey im in florida and it’s hitting damn near 100 degrees here on the daily and my AC is broken and has been for over a week now, and on top of that its 88 degrees inside the whole time after putting fans on windows and all that jazz. Now i think that constant heat is making me sick so you know thats just fantastic. Send help plz
Buy his house, it comes with a window unit AND a potted plant
Thanks for the tips, I'm running 3 window units right now but i've been thinking about picking up a couple of freestanding units for downstairs as well... I've noticed that most of the ac units you can buy these days only have the one hose though, which totally sucks... especially when you're trying to save a few bucks by picking up a used one.
also I found that they eat power like nobody's business... even if i could afford the power bill, most of these use over 1200w which means you need a dedicated circuit for them which is pretty hard to come by in my house.
You're absolutely right, the single hose units are the worst offenders by far because they are pulling air from inside of the house creating a negative pressure which works the fan harder and the compressor harder, etc. It's just a terrible design and if your house is super leaky they will cool one room better but heat up all the outside rooms in the process. The duel hose is the only way to go but not many of the companies make them because they are more expensive since they need a 2nd sealed system instead of just one fan blowing through a big condenser and shoved outside.
yeeeei
Barnacules is back
$655 on amazon yeah ill pass
Just get a bunch of the USB fans and an ice bucket 😁
How is it possible that you don't have central HVAC? Is your house built in 18 century?
Seattle didn't need it until 2012. But this summer is also nice and cool so far.
He probably has central heat.
Hey twig person here gets hot real fast
Do they though, really? 😁
Yes, yes, yes. Save money by not buying a proper AC unit, and then spend it all (and even more than that actually) to the electric bill. Genius.
You do not need a centralized AC unit, you just need 2 or 3 (or more, a cousin of mine has 4 in her house) units that you install in the rooms you need them: bedrooms and living room, and in your case the nerd cave.
Also, it is wise to call in a technician to install the AC units because 1) they will provide support in case the unit breaks, 2) they will use anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti- products to clean the AC thoroughly and also make sure the air is clean as it should be, 3) it is always better to leave something up to people who know their shit before shit hits the fan and splatters everywhere.
Wait is it 1st of April all ready
