Translation: Anita wanted to take it through the chorus rubato before moving into the upbeat version. The pianist perhaps did not trust her to lead or could not hear her to follow her. It all worked out. Great clip!!!! Wonderful to see a legend in action!
Like the intro to Buddy Rich's "Machine"? Never heard of #Rubato, had to look it up. The concept seems pretty hairy if you ask me, unless you are playing out of time while actually being in time underneath, if you know what I mean?
She also sang a made-up melody so he couldn't figure out where she was unless he heard the chords she was outlining. But he wasn't ready for all that listening. She recorded the song this way, btw.
@@Johnnycdrums. Even classical music knows rubato. I totally agree that Anita had to fight against the piano player who just pushed her through, ignoring her capabilities to really lead. Even the host did a lot of blah here no one wants to hear. I'm only a hobby jazz singer and I had to explain that exact thing to more than one player. It can be fascinating when it works, very natural. It is not written in stone that there must be a beat from bar one. Better surprise people by shifting into some changes, play with expectations.. I did that just a week ago in a workshop..
O’Day cannot afford 1 mistake! She sings on the edge and has to be perfect every time or she’ll fall off the edge of the world 🌍! She has surrounded herself with the best musicians but, when all is said and done she still has to be perfect --every time!!
Her understandable irritation with the the dismissive, sexist host, and and the pianist's reluctance to follow her lead are so telling, if you study her career. That she made into her own performance says so much about her spirit
There was no reluctance - piano player simply couldn't follow Anita's phrasing and lost her at the bridge in the rubato part. They got it together in the end!

@@nuqwestr big fan of Anita and have been for some time, could you elaborate on your comment about her ruining Art Pepper's life? Not doubting you or being combative, am genuinely curious as I know she burned bridges but hadn't heard of this particular rift.
Lewis, documented in Art's autobiography but not identified, then later confirmed to me by others who were intimate with Art, that while both were in the Kenton band, Anita introduced Art to Heroin. Perhaps I could be wrong, though, about it ruining his life, perhaps it made it!

I was under the impression Anita's smack habit was mostly facilitated by her drummer, John Poole, who had introduced it to her and managed her dosage until at least the mid 60's. She was with Kenton band - by my understanding - before she started using heroin, so maybe/maybe not. Could have crossed paths later and led him down that route, although from everything I've gathered, it seems unlikely. Thanks again, man.
She did not confuse anybody, he played the wrong chords behind her and she reacted accordingly. Anita had great ears and she didn't take crap from anybody.
Her intonation was always very suspect, even on a good performance, and she may have the pedigree because of who she's worked with, but she's never been in the class of the very best female singers of the day and certainly never been in the top three of anybody's idea of who is.
@@djenkins1918 I'm always looking for quality singing.... and it just wasn't there.. her latter albums are awful, her last one for Pablo (Norman Granz's last label) just shouldn't have been released at all. She may swing and she was quirky (but quirky doesn't always mean good!) but other singers with that similar "sound" - Chris Connor, June Christy - were streets ahead in terms of quality of voice and tuning. She also wasn't a particularly nice person to work with, so says a really GREAT tenor player on her Ronnie Scotts London gig. Anita O'Day should never be in anybody's top 3 singers of any description or you've led a very sheltered Listening life..
Who cares if you're not a 'nice person' to work with..many greats aren't..as for 'quality' singing, (whatever that is?) you could say the same for Bob Dylan (still recording in his eighties) but how wrong you'd be..this lady as far as I'm concerned is there with the greatest..Ella, Billie and Anita. The host actually got that right.
This is Jazz on the high wire and Anita was one of its greatest exponents sublimely performed without a safety net. Sit back and enjoy - WOW!

She has intonation problems, i.e. she can't stay on key. Just dreadful.
Intonation is fine. The pianist forgot the chords, so the chorus never resolved going into the bridge. He finally found it.
