    The price of a double conversion UPS will be some lost power efficiency. In the conversion from AC to DC and back to AC will cause some of the energy to be lost as heat.

      And noise too. Online UPSes are most noisy due to fans and also the constantly active power inverter (buzz, coil whine, etc noises are common).

    Standby UPS :
    the utility companie's AC runs the connected AC equipment , Directly .
    The UPS only needs to run the float battery charger maintainer voltage. ( Very efficient ).
    When the Standby UPS goes on Battery power , the efficiency drops because now the
    the connected load is powered from the DC to AC Inverter ( 1 conversion )
    The battery must supply this inefficiency loss .
    A connected 240 watt AC load will be using 240 watts + a small extra amount when running on AC directly .
    When on battery , a connected 240 watt AC load will be using about 360 watts of battery power .
    Thus the Standby UPS is inefficient only when running on the Battery ( which rarely happens )
    Online UPS ,
    The DC to AC inverter is powering the connected AC equipment Full Time .
    This is very inefficient to get 0ms switching time .
    A connected 240 watt AC load might be using 360 to 410 watts of AC , Very inefficient
    which occurs when running on commercial AC power from the wall outlet .
    When this UPS goes on battery power , the connected 240 watt AC load will cause
    battery power to reach about 360 watts ( same as for the Standby UPS when on Battery )
    The high current DC power supply will also have it's own internal power loss ( more inefficient )
    Double Converision , 2 Conversions back to back: AC to DC then DC to AC sounds cute , but is very inefficient .
    summary :
    when on Battery power , the efficiencies are the same for both types of UPS .
    when running on commercial AC outlet power , the Online UPS is Very inificient .
    Most Homie's will want to go with a Standby UPS .
    If you want an increased electric bill , then go with the OnLine UPS .
    Online UPS is basically OFF Grid ,
    as ALL AC is now coming out of the DC to AC inverter .
    a Facsimily of the commercial AC wall outlet .
    I think i want to stay with the Standby UPS .
    Standby :
    the battery is maintained at 13.5 volts and the battery is in Standby ( not doing anything )
    the UPS DC to AC inverter is in Standby ( not doing anything )
    the commercial wall outlet AC is Passed through the UPS to Directly power the
    connected AC equipment .
    The Entire UPS is truely in Standby .

    Hi, which UPS would handle the power variation from a standard emergency generator (not equiped with an inverter) and therefore adequatly protect electronic devices such as computers, tv, router, etc.? I understand that on-line double-conversion UPS would be the best choice, but could the less expensive line-interactive ups work just fine? thanks.

    Can i use an line interactive ups for home use? will this still disconnect my router / pc?

    • @chbimmer2
      @chbimmer2 4 года назад

      Jobi - a line interactive will be fine in your home environment and would be one of the better options for you. As you see from the lights, the power supplies in your equipment will still see voltage fluctuation, but it (line interactive UPS) would really shine over the offline during a brownout or sag situation. As an example, if your community had a brown out and you had 100 volts coming into your house, the line interactive would use the transformer to bring that power back up to a higher voltage and deliver more power to the load during that time. The online double conversion units are obviously the best, but they also carry a cost that may not be in the budget for the common home owner. They are normally used for critical loads in an environment that would need as little downtime as possible and as stated, they isolate the load (in your case, your router / pc) from the grid. Hope this helped.

    I have a doubt, by using offline ups can we save power from unwanted charging of ups battery?... so can i save electricity from using this type of UPS?

    • @thorsteinj
      @thorsteinj 5 лет назад

      You would in theory save energy in regular use by using an offline UPS compared to an online as the AC-DC-AC conversion isn't 100% efficient. But the point of using an online UPS is that the equipment on the load side is sensitive to interruptions and that the regular wear of the batteries and extra electricity usage is a cheap insurance compared to repairing expensive equipment due to blackouts and grid failures etc. It all depends on what's downstream.

  • @Muck-qy2oo

    Whatb exactly is the difference between a Line lnteractive and an offline UPS?

    • @NisarKhan-bg9dx
      @NisarKhan-bg9dx 6 лет назад

      main difference is that in Line Interactive the buck boost(or Voltage Regulator) will try to keep regulating the input voltage to supply load directly from input but after reaching a certain low voltage level it will shift load completely to battery.while online will not regulate voltage and directly shift load on batteries at once which is not good for battery life.

    How much time taken for changeover in offline UPS

    • @ssn90
      @ssn90 6 лет назад

      Depends for each brand...
      Ideally it should be less than hold-up time of computer PSU.
      Usually it would be less than 5ms.
      Today's PSU would generally give a hold-up time of 14 ms. I.e. In the event of power cut, the PSU would be able to supply for at least 14 milli sec. Before this exhaust, The UPS should take over the supply.
