The most memorable victory in my 40-plus years as a Wake Forest basketball fan.

I watched this in my fraternity lounge at WFU. Always remember Green's midcourt steal, Rudd's jumper and Young's winner.

The last of DePaul and Ray Meyer's crushing defeats as a #1 seed. 1980, '81, '82 and '84.

This was when CBS did only one game per night in the sweet 16 and the game was tape delayed. So this game aired at 11:30 PM ET

This game was show live in Chicago that night. I believe that it started at about 930pm,after the Memphis/Houston game.I hadn't seen this game in almost 40 years until now.I was a big DePaul fan then and was heartbroken that night. But watching thos game over several times, they absolutely deserved to lose the game. Big John whoever you are, wherever you are-thank you, thank you, thank you.

@@rogelioplacencia7911 Even in the Tape delayed days stations of local interest had the option to take the game live if they wanted to. They would also get it again in the late night slot on the tape delayed basis.

Yes I remember that policy. The night before Indiana beat North Carolina, in Jordan's last college game and we couldn't see it here in Chicago until 1030pm Chicago time on tape delays. It funny what I can remember. I couldn't tell you what I ate for breakfast, but I remember those tournament games almost 40 years ago.

@@rogelioplacencia7911 We in NC got both this game and the IU/UNC game live. They simply aired the two shows affected ( Knots Landing and Falcon Crest) following the news.

I remember watching this game as a kid. Great game and being from North Carolina and an ACC fan I was happy as a result. Sorry for Ray Meyer, good coach.

Wow been looking for this game. As a kid I was a big Wake fan because my brother went there. I was 11 when this game was played and remember being shocked and thrilled the next morning when I heard Wake won. Although they lost in the final 8 to Houston and Hakeem.

Brilliant play to foul. Shades of 81 when DePaul missed the front end to lose to St. Joe.

This Depaul is meyers deepest team and best perimeter defensive team as well they were really talented but the frontline of wake was too awesome that year

had DePaul won they’d have faced my favorite team UNC that would’ve been amazing for me my 1 v 2 all time..Ray v Dean that would’ve been a better game instead of wake vs UNC

Why couldn't DePaul call timeout back then?

Great question. Technology and time has made the referees more accountable for the fans. A lot of sports games back in the day ended with the question why and what if. So glad we have replay's. This would have changed so much sports history. I'm still asking myself if Franco Harris really caught that ball in that Pittsburgh playoff game? May He rest in peace.
