  • Episode 45 delves into the TEST DRIVE franchise, a long-running series with a unique hook and a history marred by lawsuits and desperation, leading to a procession of releases that made money but didn't last because they had basically nothing distinctive about them outside of their inexplicable industrial metal soundtracks. As expected for a game simply called TEST DRIVE 6, this is simply "another one of these".

Test Drive 6 suffers from the same issue that a lot of PS1-to-Dreamcast ports do, where you can tell the PS1 was the lead platform, and so the Dreamcast version uses the same assets, just at a slightly higher resolution. It ends up looking underpowered and underwhelming, and just wasn't good for convincing people that the system was worth their time.

Yeah! I was shocked that it looked worse than 4 did! That’s a great point, I’ve noticed that with a few others, especially SHADOW MAN, which looks like trash lol. Thanks!

The 32 bit era blew the doors open for me on racing games. It quickly became my favorite genre. I started blind buying so many racing games in the '97-'00 era. It was purchases like this one that made me hit the brakes on that habit (see what I did there). I honestly couldn't believe the way the graphics looked the way they did. This was another one of those releases that really got me to stop getting any Dreamcast games if they were already PS1 or N64 games first before they came over to Dreamcast. They always seemed cheap to me.

Lol quite true about your ending comments about different racing game series, I dont know anyone who talks about Test Drive, for better or worse.

The only thing l remember about the test drive series back then was that blue car with the white stripes. That advertisement was in EVERY video game magazine l owned back then. GamePro, Game Informer, EGM, etc. The game looked cool, but l never played it. I was way more into SF Rush and Cruise N World around that time, and from looking at this video, l made the right choice 😂 Another great upload, B - Schmiddy!

Personally I think Test Drive 5 is the peak of this series, and a bit of an underrated gem. 6 kinda went backwards in every way. In 5, there's a simple trick to make the game control much better, and that's toggling "simulation" mode on in the options menu. It's not really simulation handling, but it does vastly improve the control of many cars in the game. 99.9% of people probably never even bothered with that setting, and understandably so. Secondly, once you learn which cars are good and which are not, and the track layouts, the only unfair aspect is police stops (the cop cars can outrun any vehicle in the game in straight line speed, so you either have to beat them in the turns or make them crash). The AI is actually quite forgiving, since they tend to crash a lot, giving you a chance to catch up if you make a mistake. It creates a fun level of challenge and a great satisfaction when you eek out a win, it only takes some time investment and learning. I still play it once in a while to this day.
Also, the dreamcast port of TD6 has a HORRIBLE framerate if you play it on an actual console, its basically unplayable. I do own this game but it's forever collecting dust because of it.

I did not know about the simulation setting, but I did enjoy 4 and 5 well enough

I grew up with TD6 on PC and remember watching my older brother play through it way better than I could. It stood out for me because of the loud revving noise on every menu item, odd looking cars, but most of all the police. I always thought being able to play as the police was especially cool.
As far as other things that stood out, I recall there being invisible street lanterns in a few spots, especially an annoying one on a hairpin turn to the left. And can't you choose how much money you want to bet on in a race? I'm pretty sure my dad would tell my brother about how much to put in, and they got some cool rides that way. But most of my memories of this game are vague since I was just a young kid, and I haven't looked back at this game since.
There are some interesting aspects in this game, even if the overall product is a bit bland, and the presentation really doesn't help. Why even bother licensing the cars when they're going to be horrendously off-model, haha.

I played the police ones a little and had a little fun with that but I wasn’t compelled to come back to it much, and yeah, they’re just so ugly, I was shocked after playing the fairly clean 4 and 5

I love stuff like this. You say its playable, to me that means it works good enough for me to play on my video game steering wheel. Im playing all the old good racing games and making an arcade out of the best racing games and linking them all to my sim rig.

I just started really giving this game a try a few days ago after years of having it in my collection. It's honestly quite a decent game once you look past the graphics. I've been genuinely having fun playing the challenge modes, upgrading my car, then doing the tournaments to get money to buy the other cars. Not the prettiest game but not a bad game in my opinion.

cruising usa was crap how did you compare this to test drive?
    TXR was extremely boring
name other NFS-like games with decent quality except TD? there was no one.
today i prefer old TD 4.5 over any forza, which was crappy copy of TDU.
