Chlorine is used as a metaphor for their music making process - "this beat is a chemical", etc - just like Chlorine, music for Tyler is cleansing in the correct dose, but if it becomes too much then it becomes toxic - "my body lives on lead" - the lead of the pencil he's writing with - "the lead is terrible in flavor, but now you double as a papermaker" - "i despise you sometimes, but i love to hate the fight" - all referring to how music helps him through things, but it can become overwhelming and toxic just as those chemicals can the thing you're missing is that in between Blurryface and Trench they basically just shut everything down for a year and went on a hiatus - so when he's saying "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete" he's referring to that - "the moment is medical" meaning they needed that time away to recover - they had just went from more of an unknown group to now worldwide fame and success after Stressed Out, Ride, and Heathens all hit within a year lastly, the little guy is Ned - he basically represents their creativity so they are trying to please him and get him to jump into the pool - and he will only do that when he thinks the song is good enough - this was the intro to him, but he does show up in future videos and is for sure a fan favorite - at the end the pool is empty again and Tyler just has the little cup of chlorine to show Ned and you can see he's not impressed with it
I would pay to see ur reaction to the entirety of their album, Trench. It’s literally a soundtrack to a story of an internal struggle within Tyler and it’s amazing
@@RMirci I dont think it would be fake cuz as much as they might have heard the songs before at that point they would hear everything in context and make the connections for the first time. Would be interesting to see them connect the dots.
Explanation if you are interested : The song is about their music and how it’s like chlorine. In small doses chlorine can even be healthy for you. Chlorine can be essential for survival in certain situation because it’s so good at cleaning water; however the chemical is also poisonous and can kill you if you ingest too much. Tyler is saying that the music is the same way to him. He needs it to survive (it’s a moneymaker and also saves him psychologically and emotionally). But it can overtake him and kill him at the same time. “This beat is a chemical”. Without the music - he would die. But too much of it can also kill and destroy him. Ned (this funny creature) represents Tyler's creativity. Guys start to filling up the pool, but Ned is not satisfied until it is completely filled with chlorine (until the song is close to perfect for Tyler ).
Guys there is a whole lore and story behind TOP. The Dema Universe is something you have to look up to get an explanation. There is so much meaning and behind most of their songs beginning after their first album. It will blow your mind how much of a genius they are!!!
I wouldn’t worry about all the story and Dema. You won’t understand Chlorine and neither did we the Clique. This one is just fun…until Tyler makes me cry..😢
Chlorine is a purifying chemical and Tyler is drinking it to cleanse himself from the dark thoughts inside him. They are trying to please "Ned" (the cute critter) who represents Tylers creativity. The lead he mentions refers to a pencil.
Never heard of these guys. I'm a metal head like, Kyle. Because of your reaction now I know and love it. Just added their albums to my iTunes. Now saying that, this is why music artist should appreciate Reaction channels. cut it out with the Copyright BS. its free and a HUGE support for you whether its good or bad reaction.
Excited for this one! Chlorine is sort of part of the storyline lol there's more than 3 videos. But Jumpsuit, Nico, and Levitate are the "Trilogy" videos. But there's more to it afterwards from the most recent music video they released 😊 plus a few more that are somewhat connected to the trilogy/final music videos in some way. Order : (Heavydirtysoul), Jumpsuit, Nico and the niners, Levitate, Saturday, and then finally it's The Outside.
Eric Stockman (the top comment) explained it best! But there really is meaning behind all of their lyrics that run much deeper than you probably initially realize. Knowing the entire lore they have created since Blurryface really helps you understand the process and journey Tyler and Josh have been on and how precise and intentional all of these metaphors and concepts really are. You guys are going to have a hell of a time diving in to that and i promise you people will want to watch you both do it.
Not sure if someone has already mentioned it but Trench has a three-part storyline, so you should watch Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and then Levitate in order. There is also a link somewhere that goes even deeper into the story. They actually released the videos on different days and then went back and replaced one of the videos with a different version that had a link flash on the screen for one frame of the video. The link lead to a website that had a bunch more to the story. That's when I knew I liked Twenty One Pilots. Also, sorry to the hardcore fans if I messed any of this up.
Guys, I gotta say that I really did enjoy this! I had never heard the song before, therefore never seen the video before, but listening and watching your reaction was perfect for me. It sucks that you had to blur the video to get it out, but I didn’t need it. I appreciate your efforts to get content out for us, and I just enjoy watching you guys vibing with the music.
so the little creature is called Ned (full name Ned Bayou) and represents tyler’s creativity and speaks to his relationship with song writing. and that relationship is like chlorine: it’s cleansing (in a cathartic way, it almost cleanses his insides/his mind) but it is also poisonous (harmful, toxic, even self-destructive). He has a love/hate relationship with music and that’s embodied through the character of ned (who makes some more appearance in the album following this one)
Out of all the react channels I watch, I find myself coming back to you guys time and time again! There's something so wholesome and honest about you guys. I just keep falling more and more in love with your channel. I'm so excited to see what else you guys discover! 💜💜
This album was co-written and co-produced by Paul Meany of MuteMath which is one of the reasons why it sounds so much different than the previous albums. If you listen to MuteMath and then come back to this album you can hear his influence throughout, and at the beginning of this song that's actually his distorted voice asking "so where are you?" As far as I know he also worked with them on scaled and icy
From what I've taken from this is that it's their journey from the beginning that making music wasn't that taxing and it was pretty effortless. But as they have gotten to the level of fame they have acquired, Tyler (the singer) has kinda noted that he feels like he has to top what he's done previously. It's like he has to keep up with himself. That's why the creature (NED) is kinda shocked at what was in his cup, which Tyler has had all video.
If you guys ever get a chance to go to one of their shows.. DO IT. You won't regret it. I've been to hundreds of shows my whole life and they are hands down the BEST performance like no other, nothing compares! All the stuff you see them do on stage in music videos they do at shows, very interactive with the crowd, it's an experience! I left with shin splints for days but it was worth it!! Oh and you guys NEED to react to Trees- live at fox theater..it's the closer of all their shows and it is EPIC!
Keep up the Twenty One Pilots reactions! Love that you guys are bouncing around from era to era. I would love to see My Blood, Morph, Guns For Hands or Redecorate.
It’s about how his writing process is both cleansing and poisonous at the same time. The subject matter of his music, and the personification of Blurryface in the previous album, is about mental health struggles but ironically that is what he has needed in order to make music. Chlorine is a metaphor ‘like sipping on straight chlorine’ - he loves to hate the fight - it doubles as a paper maker - etc etc
the second to last part of the song sounds so much like their first album (compared to their resent stuff which is still amazing) that I actually teared up when I heard it.
I've loved twenty pilots over the years but their album Trench has to be by far my favorite, Literally any song out of the album is a masterpiece. It released when I was in my freshman year and thru my 4 years of high school I never got tired of this album. During the night after my graduation I hung out with a couple friends since one of them was visiting. While we were out, bandito played but I had the urge to play the whole album since it had been a while, and while the album played I felt like I was reliving the last 4 years that had gone by whether it was the good or bad times. All their albums are works of art and emotion but Trench will forever hold a special place in my heart. But for your next reaction I do wanna recommend Pink Mist by Greyscale Season
i am SO HAPPY you guys reacted to this song, its probably my favorite song from them has been for absolute years, its something that means a lot and seeing you guys excited about it makes me insanely happy!
You're probably ready for the Trench trilogy, I'd say. Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners and then Levitate (they follow from HeavyDirtySoul) After that, I'd suggest My Blood which would be a good one for you both, Neon Gravestone is a heavier one (in tone) but it's a really important listen and then try some tracks from their newer album Scaled and Icy. You'd probably love Shy Away
I don't think we should rush the Trilogy, better to build a strong foundation. We can ask for Lane Boy, Fairly Local, TIMH, Ride, Goner, Message Man, and from Trench Hype, and Pet Cheetah. Trilogy can wait.
Okay. So, ill try to go first with an explanation- supposedly Ned (little alien dude) represents Tyler's creativity. Chlorine represents the writing process he goes through when making music. Chlorine can be cleansing, but also very deadly if you take too much. Which is what happens when he goes into his dark places to write his deep lyrics, it can be helpful for him (therapy/cleansing) or it can harm him bc its some deep shit. This is the first time we met Ned, you will see him more in videos and there is much more to the lore than I tried to explain here, but yeah. This is the beginning of Ned's story, so you didn't miss anything there 😉
Also. My favorite line "my different lives I lead. My body lives on lead. The last 2 lines may read incorrect until said. lead is terrible in flavor, but you double as a papermaker" He struggles with being a good faith driven man and his need/want to make music that doesn't always follow that path. It's pulls bc the lead from the pencil to write his songs, now makes him is living and provides for him. Alot of the music is (supposedly) about his struggles between his faith/religion and his mental struggles- this is a DEEP band to try and figure out over a few videos. I am 3 years in and I learn more everyday. Can't wait to see where these reactions take you!
Just found you guys, loving your TOP reactions!!! 💛 Yes this song is a total vibe, and then I get chills when Tyler starts singing the outro (you got the goosebumps too now, dont lie lol 😍). Btw, love your shirts, both you!
All the songs that are being suggested are excellent. Also please look up the videos for the reconstructed songs that Tyler reworked in a live performance, they’re amazing
From what i heard, they took a break from making music. The little creature is his inspiration, like the manifestation of his inspiration. And hes adding that chlorine to bring his inspiration back. That's why he was singing about forgetting about the creature. Maybe. That's just what ive heard
Tyler loves to be cryptic! I think the key to this song is “This beat is a chemical.” So it’s about Tyler’s songwriting. I think the little gremlin is an image of his process of finding inspiration. And adding more and more elements of the song (chlorine, which is both cleansing and poisonous) until he’s finally free to express himself in music. That’s the way I see it. I have never understood that last part. “Can you build my house…” anybody?
Their MTV unplugged is next level. They create a new mix some of their most loved songs. It would blow Kyles mind into a million pieces. It’s on RUclips check it out
That little character is named Ned and chlorine represents his creativity. What/who Ned represents is fuzzy to me though and I think other commenters can likely clear that up 😅
you guys got to watch a hole show or a hole album of 21 pilots, its incredible how they perform, them going into the crowd and all of them singing together is amazing, i dream of going to a show of them, you should hear "kitchen sink" "the jugde" "tear in my heart" (a song about his wife), and so many more.
i remember waiting for the band to play in my city for the trench tour and the early concerts i don't think played chlorine, but thank god they did for ours cause it's a fav of mine-just hits me deep
TOP always brings music/songs that can be interpreted in so many POV. For me when I first digest Cholrine: First Part is like describing a relationship with a toxic person but at a conclusion(last part) It's like admitting that maybe I'm a toxic person too!?
I know y’all are going to get through more songs by them, but I would highly recommend the live performance of Fall Away with dr. Blum. This was probably the best version of this song, plus my guy on vocals was sick and still managed to pull off a wonderful performance! Once again I highly recommend this version than the album, you won’t regret it!!
I recommend Taxi Cab by them- the end of the song outlay’s Tyler Joseph’s salvation experience in story form. If you’d consider really old Tyler Joseph music (before Twenty One Pilots) I would recommend Addict with a Pen- which is Tyler singing out to God for more “water”, and Clear, because it lays out Tyler’s motivation for writing music- to save others. Tyler Joseph wrestles with faith now, but his early stuff was very ministerial!
Loved your amazed and confused reactions! Def genuine and right on par with the TOP experience:) As you've probably read in the comments, Ned represents Ty's creativity. Filling up the pool, the chlorine, Ned diving in, they're all metaphors for Tyler's cathartic relationship with his music. Once you understand that, you can pick up on the layers and layers of imagery and metaphors they use in this vid and others. There are many recurring themes throughout, all of which can be interpreted as needed, just as abstract art is to the viewer. And it can be different every day. That's one of the reasons we love TOP, we get what we need when we need it. If it hasn't been said yet, welcome to the Clique! |-/ FPE 💙🤍💙
i know you take requests mainly from the patreon and not your comments but i thought i’d drop in anyways: hi! i love your channel, you guys are so articulate and genuine and engaged and your reactions are some of my favorites on youtube. as someone whose favorite band was tøp for many years i love watching your reactions to them! i’d love to see what ypu think about a more recent obsession of mine (who has actually replaced them in my #1 fave slot, so take that as high praise), Will Wood (sometimes with “and the Tapeworms”). his style of music is very unique and very different to tøp, and i have no idea if you guys will like it at all, but what i can guarantee is that you’ve never heard anything like it before. i’d recommend starting with something from the Normal Album (my favorites are Laplace’s Angel and Suburbia Overture, but Love, Me Normally and I/Me/Myself are more popular and accessible if you don’t want to just dive off the deep end). i’m excited to watch whatever you two do next!!
@Jules R this should come as no surprise to you but i grew up on they might be giants lmao. definitely got some of the nerdy absurdist vibes, if louder/faster/darker. good ear!!
He's referencing taking a year to be off the grid alone with his family to write Trench. He didn't expect his fans to still be there when he came back but the moment was "medical" and needed to happen. When he says "im so sorry i forgot you. let me catch you up to speed. ive been tested like the ends of a weathered flag thats why the sea." It's revealing that he's struggled so much being out in the open and he feels tattered and torn. But "can you build my house with pieces" is likely him talking about the world he's built for us through all of the records but specifically trench. He writes in elaborate metaphors as escapism but also because it's simply the easiest way to build that world. Listen to "leave the city" for tons of clarity on that. Such intense and amazing lore to mask a very real struggle happening in his personal life.
Literally one of my fab songs in this album! Love EVERY SINGLE ONE of THEIR SONGS But i absolutely love the beat and sound to this song Its super bassy but then its also tranquil and melodic i a wierd way where it just makes you feel like your chasing eat word and sound with your eyes closed.. This song makes me feel like im Melting i to my heart hahaha.. i absolutely LOVE whe he raps in the middle. I love how he makes songs. I ESPECIALLY LOVE the slow down in the end and how the song changes towards the end with the lower , almost blurry effects of the end . Kills me everytimg lol Theyre just badass and genious artists. His voice just melts into your ears, heart & soul so smoothly lol😂 uuuughh.
Chlorine is both purifying and toxic. Tyler's creative process requires him to go back to the toxicity that made him who he is - Ned is his muse, who needs to swim in/consume the pool full of chlorine. Going back through your old shit can help you like in therapy, but to immerse himself in it to make music is emotionally exhausting for Tyler. He uses "vulture" in the similar way in other songs - in Levitate he says "Dont feed me to the vultures, I AM a vulture who feeds on pain." At the end of this video he tries to offer Ned water like, "could you accept not toxic?" And Ned cringes, nope.
just to add!! since you were asking for more live things to react to, check out ride live (during the blurryface or emotional roadshow tour), morph live (during the bandito tour) or saturday live (during the takeover or icy tour) to have a look at how josh interacts with the crowd… 👀
Taking a chance to be greater than yourself but when he comes back to his friend to let him know what he has learned and experience, he wants Ned to take that leap of faith, the unknown. When you step into the unknown, you will have the ability to tap into your potential as you are learning and evolving without being controlled by someone who stirring you in the wrong direction. That’s my interpretation of this literal song.
I really love them and they are great band! I really recommend Fall Away from their first album or no chances from their new album (scaled and icy)! Loving the reaction by the way!
Another great reaction, I'm loving watching you both discover twenty one pilots - it's like hearing them for the first time all over again and I'm here for it. I'd love you to react to My Blood, the video is amazing but the few reactions I've seen have all missed the point; I think you guys would get it, though :)
Althought "Ned" represents creativity.. I like to think that Ned represents anything related with pure things, emotions, feelings, etc... that special thing you are looking for (sometimes desperatly) and you can't reach... or at least, for a very long time, something that is important to you but at the same time it means some kind of conflict... So deep!! I love this song, many verses are so powerfull !!!... such us : "I'm so sorry, I forgot you / Let me catch you up to speed / I've been tested like the end of /a weathered flag that's by the sea... Can you build my house with pieces? /I'm just a chemical "... Hugs from Argentina!!
TOP are a S tier band to go see live. After seeing them live I have been a huge huge fan. Amazing set and energy, some of the best fans you can find as well.
Chlorine is used as a metaphor for their music making process - "this beat is a chemical", etc - just like Chlorine, music for Tyler is cleansing in the correct dose, but if it becomes too much then it becomes toxic - "my body lives on lead" - the lead of the pencil he's writing with - "the lead is terrible in flavor, but now you double as a papermaker" - "i despise you sometimes, but i love to hate the fight" - all referring to how music helps him through things, but it can become overwhelming and toxic just as those chemicals can
the thing you're missing is that in between Blurryface and Trench they basically just shut everything down for a year and went on a hiatus - so when he's saying "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete" he's referring to that - "the moment is medical" meaning they needed that time away to recover - they had just went from more of an unknown group to now worldwide fame and success after Stressed Out, Ride, and Heathens all hit within a year
lastly, the little guy is Ned - he basically represents their creativity so they are trying to please him and get him to jump into the pool - and he will only do that when he thinks the song is good enough - this was the intro to him, but he does show up in future videos and is for sure a fan favorite - at the end the pool is empty again and Tyler just has the little cup of chlorine to show Ned and you can see he's not impressed with it
amazing!!! hope they read this
Put it in way better words than I could! I hope they see this!!
Read this. Explains it perfectly
Super well said! Hope they see this one
Great explanation! Commenting to boost!
“Trees” “Tear in my heart” “The judge” live at fox theater are all really good live performances by them
Holding on to you is the best
TREES!!!!
"the judge" is my personal favorite with "not today"
Agreed ❤️
Fun fact: Chlorine is the 17th element. He starts singing at 0:17
I would pay to see ur reaction to the entirety of their album, Trench. It’s literally a soundtrack to a story of an internal struggle within Tyler and it’s amazing
Favorite album of my lifetime
They just #leveledup in the symbolism and im here for it!
pay someone to show their fake reactions?

I was feeling depressed. I watched this and I feel so much better. Thank you
You have meaning in this world! Praying for you!
The music video for Holding on To You is insane, I know you did the live reaction, but you catch more in the video
Just found you guys, loving your TOP reactions!!! 💛 Yes this song is a total vibe, and then I get chills when Tyler starts singing the outro (you got the goosebumps too now, dont lie lol 😍). Btw, love your shirts, both you!
One of my favorite Twenty One Pilots songs. ❤
They are amazing 💛 like NF it's a journey.. And it's all connected.. More TØP
You gotta do The Hype and then The Hype(Berlin)
I've been listening to them for years and just now understood the rap part illustrating his addiction, passion, and money ("paper") maker.
I'm 47 and love these guys. This is what music is supposed to be. Its everything I've heard since I was 10 years old all at once.
For me when I first digest Cholrine:
First Part is like describing a relationship with a toxic person
but at a conclusion(last part) It's like admitting that maybe I'm a toxic person too!?
Loving the TØP and NF reactions!!
Great reaction. Another song you will find yourself listening to over and over again.
I agree. Fall away is amazing. They live with Dr Blum is a piece of art (I should probably say another piece of art as so many of their songs are)
I recommend Taxi Cab by them- the end of the song outlay’s Tyler Joseph’s salvation experience in story form.
|-/ FPE 💙🤍💙
Going down the playlist ❤️ always a fun sing-along at their shows.
i know you take requests mainly from the patreon and not your comments but i thought i’d drop in anyways: hi! i love your channel, you guys are so articulate and genuine and engaged and your reactions are some of my favorites on youtube. as someone whose favorite band was tøp for many years i love watching your reactions to them! i’d love to see what ypu think about a more recent obsession of mine (who has actually replaced them in my #1 fave slot, so take that as high praise), Will Wood (sometimes with “and the Tapeworms”). his style of music is very unique and very different to tøp, and i have no idea if you guys will like it at all, but what i can guarantee is that you’ve never heard anything like it before. i’d recommend starting with something from the Normal Album (my favorites are Laplace’s Angel and Suburbia Overture, but Love, Me Normally and I/Me/Myself are more popular and accessible if you don’t want to just dive off the deep end). i’m excited to watch whatever you two do next!!
You should react to Levitate. It's another one of their songs 👍
OH YES! My NEW bucket list concert FOR SURE! 🔥 🎶 ✨️ 😍 🙌 ☺️ HI GUYS!😉✌️❤️🔥🔥🥁🥁🥁🥁😁
You guys are awesome, thanks! (from a Brazillian fan)
Literally one of my fab songs in this album! Love EVERY SINGLE ONE of THEIR SONGS But i absolutely love the beat and sound to this song
Its super bassy but then its also tranquil and melodic i a wierd way where it just makes you feel like your chasing eat word and sound with your eyes closed.. This song makes me feel like im Melting i to my heart hahaha.. i absolutely LOVE whe he raps in the middle. I love how he makes songs. I ESPECIALLY LOVE the slow down in the end and how the song changes towards the end with the lower , almost blurry effects of the end
He uses "vulture" in the similar way in other songs - in Levitate he says "Dont feed me to the vultures, I AM a vulture who feeds on pain." At the end of this video he tries to offer Ned water like, "could you accept not toxic?" And Ned cringes, nope.
i’m convinced they’re making us wait for trees
lets goooooo im loving the twenty one pilots reactions 💜
just to add!! since you were asking for more live things to react to, check out ride live (during the blurryface or emotional roadshow tour), morph live (during the bandito tour) or saturday live (during the takeover or icy tour) to have a look at how josh interacts with the crowd… 👀
You'll LOVE "Jumpsuit" by them too!
If you havent already please do holding onto you, ode to sleep, and good day!
Another great reaction, always enjoy my time on Ryker Road, you guys rock! #rykerroad
That’s Ned! You’ll see him again. He represents creativity. Just like Blurryface represents negativity.✌️😊🌼
i vote for my blood next. the video has halloween elements, since it’s spooky season, and the song is about family. love y’all’s reactions 🖤🖤
You guys HAVE TO react to their song Message Man. I especially think Eric would love some of the rap lines and flows that he has throughout the song!
you guys have gotta do more twenty one pilots!! some new ones, and songs like ride and jumpsuit for sure!!!
This film clip was filmed here in Sydney Australia in December 2018. 🇦🇺
That's the introduction to Ned AKA neural expansion device
Taking a chance to be greater than yourself but when he comes back to his friend to let him know what he has learned and experience, he wants Ned to take that leap of faith, the unknown. When you step into the unknown, you will have the ability to tap into your potential as you are learning and evolving without being controlled by someone who stirring you in the wrong direction. That’s my interpretation of this literal song.
I really love them and they are great band! I really recommend Fall Away from their first album or no chances from their new album (scaled and icy)! Loving the reaction by the way!
Rewatching because it's fun listening to music with friends (in my head lol) ❤️
The little guys name is Ned, he represents Tyler's creativity. He thrives on chlorine which is a metaphor for the process of making music.
One of my faves for sure
You gotta check out “My Blood” and “jumpsuit” by tøp!! My blood is such an incredible music video, twenty one pilots never disappoints
Love your 21p reactions ❤
The ending of this song is magical
all of them albuns relate to each other like a ARG with a deep lore
next try The Outside
"When I leave don't save my seat" was indeed a good line.
You can hear to TREES (Live) official video of 10 years ago, this video has the same essential as Ode to Sleep. I am sure you will love and surprise ♥
Love this song the video was recorded in Sydney Australia ❤
Another great reaction, I'm loving watching you both discover twenty one pilots - it's like hearing them for the first time all over again and I'm here for it. I'd love you to react to My Blood, the video is amazing but the few reactions I've seen have all missed the point; I think you guys would get it, though :)
“Trees” live! PLEASE! You’ll dig it!
Sick tune 🔥
I am so here for these ToP reactions!
Please please please try “Levitate” by Twenty One Pilots. Love them so much!
you guys need to react to the twenty one pilot’s story that’s AMAZING
You guys should totally check out “pet cheetah” live from the bandito tour. The energy is insane
TOP are a S tier band to go see live. After seeing them live I have been a huge huge fan. Amazing set and energy, some of the best fans you can find as well.
