Often times I see people like Umar speak it annoys me that he can say some of the most contradictory, nonsensical statements, but if he says it loud enough and with enough passion, it sounds like some real shit. Don't get me wrong, he has said some things that make sense, but sometimes we let people with a good talk game distract us.

Africans dont even claim much of our culture here. If you dig deeper HipHop has its root in American Soul/Disco/Blues.
Simultaneously, it had roots in Jamaican culture with their version of DJs being selectors. DJ Kool Herc borrowed from that and infused it with American DJ culture. HipHop may be dominated by black people but it's not ours anymore than rock is ours. We created that too. But music is for everyone.

Eminem is a rather polarizing figure. You have sub-groups of consumers that will place him in or exclude him from conversations by default. And unfortunately his background impacts that aspect of the conversation in both instances. In short, hip-hop fans usually list Nas, 2Pac, Jay-Z, or a key pioneer as the greatest of all-time. For most casual consumers who may have hip-hop as their secondary or even tertiary preferred audio art form, Eminem, Kanye, 2Pac, and even Drake receives a bulk of the consideration. Common arguments for Eminem are his global revere/appeal, technical lyricism, and, character variance. Relevant counter arguments regarding his placement include horrid critical reception, poor project construction, lack of thematic focus and conceptual depth, forceful literary elements at the expense of content and delivery, and external pedestalizing. Overall, there is no true opinion but strength of arguemnts do exist, and I think it lies somewhere in the middle. Maybe not as high or low as specific groups place him, you need to analyze and observe his material with an objective mindset void of disposition.

If you’re looking at hip hop as a black culture, which it is, I can see the debate. People take the influence of artist who come before them, they reach that pentacle and surpass it. It happens in sports and literature and science and mathematics. I think Slash is the greatest guitarist of my generation, and I know he wouldn’t be there had it not been for men like Jimi Hendrix. At some point, cultures merge and find their own branch and that branches into something else. It’s hard to establish a GOAT across genres, decades, and art. Slim is an artist. And he is great at what he does. But would he be that great without the pioneers before him. Can you call him a GOAT without NWA, Ghetto Boys, Ice T, or LL? Give him the credit he deserves. Because everything he does is a credit to the men who came first.

I understand Dr.Umar's argument (did I really just say that?) and he's entitled to his opinion, but I disagree. Eminem has proved over and over again that he's one of the best to ever do it, and has a legitimate argument for consideration at number one.

I don't see Hip Hop as an "African" thing, never have. I'm African, from Africa. What African instruments were used when hip hop first started? What African language did the first rappers speak? Hip Hop was made by African Americans. People from African descent, but also from a first world western country. Hip Hop was created using western tools and originated, geographically, outside of Africa. The only thing, at least the way I understand it, that ties hip hop to Africa, was that it's a product of humans who were descendants of Africans, but by then, those people had already established their own western identity outside of true African culture. So to me, hip hop feels like a western thing, specifically an American thing, even more specifically, a black American thing, but it's built from too many foreign tools for me to look at it as a product of Africa. Not our language, not our instruments, not our music.
