- My DIY approach to building a massive 8' x 2' butcher block hardwood workbench, with a built in harbor freight 44" tool box. This is a great budget workbench for those that also want a great option to store tools, without having to spend over 1,000 on something remotely similar.
This is part of the 2 Car garage workshop I've been building and now I finally was able to throw away that old nasty 2x4 workbench I had built years ago.
Some of the stuff I use on the channel to help out with the builds (some amazon affiliate and some are just random companies with great products!)
Tools I use:
Miller 211 MIG Welder: amzn.to/2UL7hX9
Lincoln Square Wave 200 TIG Welder: amzn.to/3fk4bTD
Milwaukee M12 Stubby Impact (Huge timesaver): amzn.to/392RsU9
Milwaukee 1/2 Cordless Drill: amzn.to/3kPx7Uv
Milwaukee: Horizontal Bandsaw: amzn.to/3nDYa78 (with SwagOffroad conversion)
Makita 1/2 Impact: amzn.to/3nGVDJx
Dewalt Angle Grinder: amzn.to/3fkZoBf
Bucktool Direct Drive Belt Sander: amzn.to/3pNQmBG
Jackson Safety Welding Hood: amzn.to/2HnmgDP
JDsquared Model 3 Bender: www.jd2.com/mo...
Company For Bender Mods/Fabrication Tools: www.swagoffroa...
Filming Equipment:
Canon 80D: amzn.to/35RqxbV
Sony ZV1: amzn.to/3nQC8yl
GoPro Hero: amzn.to/392bvlA
Canon 10-18mm Lens: amzn.to/3lS6FLt

Manfrotto Tripod: amzn.to/36VjgXX
Joby Tripod: amzn.to/392Chuj
GoPro Tripod: amzn.to/3nOb3Mb
The bench was built with :
Maple Butcher Block 2' x 8' x 2"
1.5" square tubing 1/8th" thick
5" casters
44" Harbor freight tool box
Semi- gloss Polyurethane
Bad ass! Thank you for the great vid, definitely upgrading mine to this length.
Wow! I've never seen anyone work so FAST!
I did something similar but I put power outlets every 2 feet on the back edge. I got some flush mounting ones where you just drill a hole. They have to outlets and 2 USBs. I’m not sure what they’re rated but this was for a reloading/gun bench so it’s mostly power things like scales powder measures and lights. Nothing that draws much current but I’m sure you could find something rated for 15amp
Awesome job.... I’ve seen a few videos of people making their own benches and incorporating Harbor Freight or Husky tool carts into them. I think it’s the way to go to get something that is functional, looks good, and doesn’t break the bank. I’m leaning to building a bench for our shop after getting great ideas from what I’ve seen... Enjoy your bench.....
Great work. Id like to "borrow" your idea. Any thoughts after using it a while?
I like it, have been looking for ideas and this really helps. Thanks for posting, great job.
I like it. Did the spray paint come off the truck ok?
I did this for myself and it’s well worth it !!
Nice. I have had this same idea for several years, and I am building a tiny house in an insulated shipping container. Anyway, I got a hart tool box as my kitchen drawers. I will be putting an 8 ft butcher block over it as a counter, but I will need to do a sink cutout in mine. Anyway, looks great. I hadn't thought to do steel tubing. Now I need to think on it, as I had planned to build out of plywood, sort of like a more traditional cabinet carcass, but this gives me another possibility.
I like it, I've been planning on a new reloading bench using that same butcher block. I have been planning a wood support for it, but I really like this look, I think I'll do the same.
I use old glass jars/ peanut butter jars to store lock washers, regular washers, and nuts, bolts, wood screws etc. I then screw the lids to the underside of a shelf, doubling its value. This way the jars are held up by the lids ad out of the way. You could use them in the space between your cabinets at 11:54 for example. Since similar items are stored together it makes it easier to find too.
Nicely done!
Good job 👍
Inspiring ! I’m looking to do
Something very similar . Tonight I moved away from everything crammed in a full chest . Put long/bulky items on a pegboard and put all the standard hand tools in a 5 drawer cart . It holds a lot !
My plan is to keep the cart to roll to my project area , and have a workbench like yours for work space for rebuilding parts removed from project . I’d like to keep electrical items and other big tools that I don’t use everyday in the integrated toolbox under the workbench .
I used the same Lowe’s butcher block for counter top for my coffee bar/pantry I built last summer . It turned out great . We thinned white paint , coated heavy. Then sanded back and stained brown over it . 10-15 coats of semi gloss and it looks weathered and beautiful. Holding up
Well
Great build! What are you using to weld the steel? My first visit but I'll look for another one of yours. Cheers!
Thanks! I was using my Miller 211 mig welder for all the welding.
Awesome build very clean. How thick was the steel tube?
Looks good man! My garage is currently a mess which especially sucks because I just broke my car at a rallycross last weekend and need the space to fix it
Trying to fix a car in a torn up garage is what led to all of my garage projects haha. I feel your pain, mine has been broken since the May RallyX, but I knew I had to re do my garage or I was going to just keep rushing all my projects on the car. I'm finally done with the garage though and the it's about to be pulled in to finally start working on it.
Looks really awesome man !
Great job, what did the overall height come out to?
Lots of work making that frame, and I don't have a welder. I'm going to take a similar approach with the top and just buy two tool chests, one at each end with a space for a chair in the middle. That will give me twice the storage as well.
Great job thanks!
As far as tools go, I always put the things
I use the most in the top most drawer of my box. Specialty tools and things that I use less get put in the bottom
wait mission bbq are you in the central pa area? not sure if it's a big chain or not and great job on the bench looks strong and it will last a long time
How much did the square pipe cost?
Great job, really like the results, any info on the welding table?
That bench came out incredible, how is it holding up since you built it till now
You must be a mechanic for a living? Nice job!
Great build! I cringed, though, with the polyurethane on the wood, ohhh nooo! Lol! Read up on Boiled Linseed Oil.
It came out nice. Good job.
In materials including the box, I am guessing you spent about $800?
Plus all your labor and if you had to buy all the tools... buying one for 1800-2000 is not a bad deal.
The good side it came out how you envisioned it.
What hardware did you use to attach the frame to the wood. Im doing some similar with a robust tool chest and want it to have a solid top.
I used 1/4” x 1.25” lag bolts with washers, I believe I used 10 with predrilled holes through the metal frame.
Very cool! New sub.
We want more gc videos
Don't worry, The GC is going back into the garage today to be almost completely re-done!
Dirty Garage awesome, can’t wait for the videos
How did you attach your steel frame to the tool box?
It just floats in the three sided section I made for it. The heaviness of the table and only 1/8th on both sides holds it in nicely
The filler music in the middle is 100% a reworking of tool's "invincible".
I legit thought it was a tool song I hadn’t heard before or a demo
So he spent about 5-600$ dollars instead??
Quick search on Lowe’s shows a 8’ butcher block for like $250. So yeah realistically, final numbers....$5-$600 🤷🏻♂️
