All your makes are great, but this dress is one of my favourites and IG showed, that it's not only my opinion. Soutache adds so much glam, even on the simplest pieces. This dress is everything but simple, but the applied butterflies make it a perfect eye-catcher 💚🦋💚. A lot of afford, but worth every minute (not sure if I would make it from the same fabric, because it takes so much time). Beside this, really love your cute pincushion 🤩
Thank you so much Anja. It’s true, when you’re sewing clothes around going to work it takes a lot of time to make all that bias binding for the soutache, and to sew it in place too. (Now I understand the prices of those vintage soutache dresses!) I love this dress pattern, though, and would gladly make it again, perhaps with colour blocking. Thank you for liking my foxy pincushion too, and for all your support from the very start. Love to you and your fur baby ♥️🌺
Thank you for showing the make of this dress and for explaining how you created the piping! That's a great idea, my way to create the piping was much more complicated!
Thank you so much Josephine, and for watching too! There’s no quick way to create that piping. In theory you can machine stitch it again once it’s double folded. It’s a lie! It would end up flat as a pancake. I have to tell you I saw RUclips had provided automatic captions for this video. Soutache was spelt as Suit Ash (among other things) 🙄💗💕
Samantha your sewing friends will really appreciate your skills. You are so talented and patient. I think the dress is just beautiful and this is enhanced with you wearing it.
Thank you very much Ian. Yes, Foxy my sewing friend is a constant companion! And I loved this sewing pattern so much I want to do it in different fabrics. I’m very grateful for your encouragement and support, and for watching me again!
It's no wonder this dress was such a hit!! Firstly, just the cut and shaping of it is truly 1940s, the gathers over the bodice and neckline are spot on for the era. Loving the yoke and waist. But, Oh how the soutache design lifts the whole thing to another level! 😲 fiddly diddly work indeed! What an effect, its sensational 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much Rowan. I remember you were so encouraging about this dress at the time. Yes, after I did all that fiddly diddly soutache I had a new respect for the prices of the originals. It’s not difficult but it takes hours! I loved this dress pattern though because it really works and fits well without adjustments all over the place. I really want to do a colour block version with a contrast bodice and sleeves 💕💗🌸
@@rowanhughes8682 I already have them ready. I’m much better at planning than doing. Brace yourself … the colours are emerald green and purple. They do go together, honest. I have a vintage patterned fabric in my stash patterned in purple and green, plus a remnant of Liberty purple wool challis!
@@Samanthalovestosew eek! It's gonna be a winner! Loving the colour choices, I'm picturing Endora! Ooh she wore some STYLES! (Samantha's mother on Bewitched) 💚💜💚💜

Thank you so much Masha. I’ve used that book of Japanese motifs as a source for so many different types of projects over the years. You’d never think a book like that could be so useful! Olive green is my very best colour ❤️
We loved this dress Samantha, I had no idea you made the decoration yourself, so clever and beautiful just like you. So interesting to see the whole process.
Thank you very much. I have to admit making the piping for the soutache took forever. Now I understand why the original dresses are expensive! I absolutely loved this pattern and really want to make it again, perhaps with colour blocking this time! 💕

I LOVE this pattern. I want to make other versions. I got it from the Vintage Sewing Pattern Company. I should have put their website in my caption below the video. I’ll do it now. The only drawback is that it comes as a pdf so you have to print it out and sellotape it together!
Hello! I made the soutache by cutting bias binding then folding it as usual but then folding again (ie folding it twice). You’re supposed to be able to machine stitch this to make the soutache braid but I found this flattened the braid. So I slip stitched the edges together by hand. Then I pinned it onto the dress and slip stitched it in place. It does take a very long time! I’ve been meaning to devote a video entirely to soutache - I must! Thank you for watching me and I’m so pleased you like the dress. 💗🎀
Did you know you can get a foot for your vintage machine for doing soutache without all the faffing? You could draw the design on it you wanted to, but you don't need to pin it all into place with correct foot. It is called an underbraider foot.
I didn’t know! My mother and I have a big collection of vintage sewing machine feet but haven’t worked out what they all do. I bet between us that we have an underbraider foot. I’m so delighted to find this out as I want to sew more soutache designs. Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to let me know! Truly much appreciated 💐
So refreshing to see someone that does not waste fabric!
Thank you! I always use every shred of fabric … in fact the shreds go into rag rug making! Thank you so much for watching too.

Thank you so much. It took ages! (I can see why people are tempted to use bought piping…) 💕
