  • The Restored: a Journey to Renewed Hope series continues as Pastor Mike Patz looks at Malachi 3:6-12. What is the Truth about Tithing? There is a strong charge, asking "will a man rob God?" Our possessions are an accurate indicator of where our heart truly is. God is good, and He is calling us to return our hearts to Him. May it be founded in trust and dependence upon God.

This is so helpful. It's about much more than tithing, it's about how we handle the Bible as a whole. I'm not sure what I think about the 10% number but I'm convinced that there is something about the first fruit. It's a little suspicious when American christians are less generous "under grace" than Jews were "under law". It sure seems like grace would make us more generous, not less. But then again, it seems pretty clear that Americans have a pretty deep love affair with money. I certainly struggle to let go. FWIW

Thanks for sharing Jose and being honest! You bring up a great point that we've been given such a generous gift in God's grace, His Son's sacrifice, yet the stats reveal American Christians are some of the most stingy in the world. What an interesting phenomenon, right?

I have a couple of issues with this presentation: 1) Tithes and firstfruits are absolutely not the same thing. When speaking about offerings to God, firstfruits are far less than 10%. 2) The prophet Malachi was talking to priests that were failing to do their duties. He clearly wasn't picking out just one of the 600 plus laws under the Old Covenant to say that believers now need to do it. 3) We are warned in James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. Thanks for sharing George. Based on your belief on tithing, how do you suggest someone should use their resources to consider the poor and honor God? We're looking forward to your feedback.

@@GreenhouseChurchGNV I commented 5 days ago after listening to only the first few minutes. Since you questioned me, this time listened to the entire presentation. I wanted to make sure I had a good understanding of what the preacher was saying. Here's what I took away from this: the preacher is outstanding. He has the God given ability to influence people no matter what he says. He could say up is down and black is white and will still be able to influence many. That said, I won't answer the question you posed. I say that because I am under the belief that you/he are/is still looking for a way to teach tithing. If I am wrong about that then send me an email and we can communicate a little more.
ps. Actually I was pleasantly surprised that you allowed my first comment to remain.

Biblical tithing had nothing to do with finances. There's no such thing as a biblical tithe collected from earned wages yet there's ample evidence that money was widely traded and wages were paid during those times. Malachi 3 has nothing to do with money and the tithe indictments were directed towards the Levitical Priests (see Malachi 1:6 and 2:1). There's nothing biblical that binds the Christian to perpetually pay 10% of their earnings, or anything else, to a religious institution, or anywhere else. We're free to give, not bound to pay.

Hey, @markb7067 thank you for leaving us a comment! You bring up some interesting points, but we would say that the underlying principles of biblical generosity to the Lord definitely still apply today. Much like the ancient Israelites honored the Lord with the first fruits of their earnings (usually crops or livestock), we strive to honor the Lord with the first fruits of our earnings as well. And since our economy almost exclusively revolves around the US Dollar, that's what we choose to be generous with. We agree with what Paul writes concerning the Corinthians in 1 Cor. 9: "Each person should do as he has decided in his heart-not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver." No one should be compelling you to give or twisting your arm; you should 100% be free to give what the Lord has laid on your heart, free of all reluctance and compulsion! That being said, it's very sad to see the wealthiest Christians in the world statistically being the least generous globally. If we are so free to give as we see fit, why then do we see such a lack of generosity in those God has blessed so richly? We long to see the people of God be radically generous, just as we see God Himself being radically generous. We hope this helps to communicate some more of our heart behind giving! Thank you for checking out this message, we hope it's an encouragement to you.

@@GreenhouseChurchGNV Thank you for the feedback. I agree with you in terms of generosity. However, that which is compulsory, such as systematic tithing under Mosaic Law, cannot be considered a gift. Systematic tithes were taxes, only not remitted as money, and the "first fruits" were heave offerings of consumable produce brought to the temple for consumption (Deuteronomy 26 1-4). I'm not sure what data you are referencing when you assert "why do we see a lack of generosity in those God has blessed so richly"? If only church tithing records are being referenced, I would suggest that is but one component of what one may consider being generous. Regardless, I appreciate the exchange and I wish you well. Blessings in your giving!
