      The command to tithe was only part of the Mosaic Law, a law code that God gave to ancient Israel. Christians are not legally subject to the Mosaic Law and so are not required to tithe. (Colossians 2:13, 14) Instead, each Christian is to contribute financially "as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."--2 Corinthians 9:7. The Christian congregation forming the "Israel of God," or a nation of spiritual Israelites, differs from natural Israel. (Gal. 6:16) It has no special priestly class nor a body of sanctuary workers who cannot own land or are otherwise prevented from using their hands to the full in caring for their material needs. All the members of spiritual Israel are a "holy priesthood." (1 Pet. 2:5) Thus there is no need for the kind of material support Jehovah God outlined for natural Israel. Furthermore, the activities carried on at the sanctuary by Israel's priests and the Levites pointed to realities fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Respecting the provisions of God's law to Israel, the Bible tells us: "Those things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ." (Col. 2:17) "Since the Law has a shadow of the good things to come, but not the very substance of the things, men can never with the same sacrifices from year to year which they offer continually make those who approach perfect." (Heb. 10:1) When the reality came into being, the functions pointing to it ceased to have any value. And tithes for supporting these functions were no longer required. The Law covenant, with its commands about tithing, was abolished on the basis of Jesus' death on the torture stake. Of this, the inspired apostle Paul wrote: "[God] blotted out the handwritten document . . . and He has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the torture stake." (Col. 2:14) Hence, the command on tithing given to the Israelites cannot be used to prove that God requires this of Christians. An examination of the Christian Greek Scriptures gives no indication that members of the first-century church had to pay tithes. True, they made contributions for relief measures in behalf of needy fellow believers. They also gave assistance to elders who worked hard in speaking and teaching. At no time, though, do we read of a specific amount of income being set aside for such contributions.--Acts 11:29; Rom. 15:26; 1 Cor. 16:1-3; Phil. 4:15, 16. In the Christian Greek Scriptures the emphasis is on voluntary giving that stems from the heart. We read: "If the readiness is there first, it is especially acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what a person does not have." (2 Cor. 8:12) "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Cor. 9:7) Manifestly, if tithing had been enjoined upon Christians, the amount would already have been determined for them by a specific command. (1 Tim. 5:17, 18) Again there is no mention of any tithe to be used in assisting elders materially. Then, too, we should not conclude from this text that any of the elders received a fixed salary. What they received were voluntary gifts from those who appreciated that the time these elders spent in behalf of the congregation could have been used by them in working for money. The apostle Paul and other faithful elders, however, did not seek after such material assistance. They worked with their hands to care for their physical needs.--1 Thess. 2:9. Thus there is no Biblical proof that early Christians considered tithing to be a divine requirement. It was such only during the time the Law covenant was in force. With the abolition of the Law, the command about tithing was also canceled. And no command to tithe was given to the Christian congregation.

    God certainly blessed me and my family after a layoff in 2001 where we had practically no savings and we were on the verge of losing everything, and my career was already pretty much dead in the water - I prayed and prayed like never before, and remembered Jesus said the Father would always provide - then God provided not only a job, but one in less than two months after the layoff, and one that's probably the most secure possible in these times (local government) and with some of the best benefits (including a defined benefit pension, which is rare these days). Still with this job today (2024). I took a pay cut at first (out of desperation when I accepted the job), but I've been reclassified a few times and received yearly pay increases, so now I'm doing better than ever. I say all that to say, YES, I will give the Lord all I can give, and my church is doing wonderful work to spread the gospel throughout the world and help orphans and others in need, to God's glory!

It took me a while to get here, but I consider a tithe as a place to start my giving and am JOYFUL to actually see it being used to grow His Kingdom. It sure seems like the more I try to give, the more He blesses me. God has a much bigger shovel than I do! Tithing is not connected to salvation because salvation is a free gift received by faith. But sowing financially into God’s kingdom is absolutely connected to blessings; there are literally scores of scriptures in both Old and New Testament to support this. For example, the apostle Paul tells us that everyone should give according to his income. I don’t believe that God is angry at Christians who don’t give; rather, I believe He is disappointed that such immature Christians are not providing Him an opportunity to bless them. I do recognize that the “prosperity gospel” has done much to harm true Biblical principles on giving. When God promises to bless us, spiritual blessings like God’s guidance, wisdom, peace, joy, and contentment are worth more than any amount of financial blessing.

      That passage in Malachi has been misinterpreted for many years! First, that message was addressed to a specific group of people at a specific time! The Israelites were living under the Moisaic law where tithing was an obligation , we Christians live under a law of grace and not the Moisaic law. This is well stated in Romans 6:14. For sin has no dominion on us since we not under the law but under grace!
      Also in Act 15 there is big debate in the council of Jerusalem where it was agreed that Gentiles that convert into Christianity where told that they are not bound by the law of Moses, to the exception of a few laws, where tithing was not included.

    You can never outgive God. We have what we have because of Him. Why would someone not want to give 10 percent of their earnings and have His blessings on their finances and their lives? Tithing came before the law and was not done away with. Tithing was never an ordinance against us, so it was not one of them that was nailed to the cross. It is our duty and responsibility as Christians to support our church we attend. People tend to overlook the fact that a church has to pay electric, phone, water, insurance, literature, Pastor's salary, buy supplies, etc. What if we only paid what we felt like paying on our household bills? Most of us would be reading by candlelight or, even worse, living as the homeless on the street having lost our homes.

This is basically telling us to save 10% each week. This is my understanding of the words you read and showed to us. Not one word said to give 10% to the church. Give what is in your heart to give. Yes... but the rest has little to nothing to do with the church. This was also back when everyone grew their own food. Solidly reasoned from Scripture. I would, however, go one step further and say the giving on the first day of the week was for a specific "project" and also should not be created into a new "law" than condemns people if they don't do it. All our giving now should be in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. This gives people an opportunity to truly be generous BEYOND the letter of the law-"You have heard it said, but I say to you...."-and to give freely and with eagerness. Giving truly is a work of grace upon a new creature that overcomes natural selfishness.

    This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I appreciate your general take on this subject. I have to add, though, that's there's 1 thing ALWAYS left out of giving discussions, including yours, and that's the poor. It's 1 thing to give 10% (actually less due to tax breaks) of a $100,000 income, choosing to live on >$90K, and COMPLETELY another to be disabled and living near the poverty line with extra health expense needs. Due to 2 TBI and more that is my lot. In the current church culture, only giving to the church seems to count, even though the Bible is replete with statements about helping the poor. And much of what's given to organizations is often wasted on overhead or spent on "help" that is more about "look how we're helping" than actually helping. There are too many out there giving their "widow's mite" (everything left after covering basics, and often doing without some of what 99% of Americans would consider absolute basics) yet are condemned because it's not 10% of their poverty level income. Please, don't act like the poor don't exist when you have these discussions, or that giving to them is somehow marginal compared to giving to the megachurch so they can get a new humongous video wall & sound system and hire a 15th assistant pastor of assistant pastor assisting.

    I agree with your understanding of the Old Testament's Commandments and Laws (Works). When Christ died on the cross, He said "It is finished" ; He meant the Jewish beliefs of having to do Work to get to Heaven. That included paying tithing of money, the reaping of the sweat of the brow, and sacrifices. Paul came along and taught, through Christ, of giving gladly and freely accordingly.
    Here is where I get very perturbed with the leaders of many of the churches of today, you have to ask yourself, why do they feel they have the right to take their church's donated money for the needy, and instead, build mansions, buy expensive cars, wear designer clothing and have multiple homes in some very high priced neighborhoods or exotic vacation spots. The leaders, apparently, have so much extra money donated, that they have run out of those people who need help financially. There are no more parishioners in their church or neighborhood homeless widows and children any longer that need a helping hand. There are no more homeless people at all, that need a helping hand apparently, so they feel justified in taking the rest of the money for their own personal use. I think any and all church leaders should be fired when they start living beyond their standing with Christ.

    Tithing is not a new testament principal, it says we should give what we purpose in our own heart. The Bible says if you're going to go to the law you got to take the whole entire law. I absolutely believe in giving, but nowhere does he commanders in the New testament to tithe.

    • @helenahall4893
      @helenahall4893 Месяц назад

      Tithing was never money. God told the Israelites tithe to the Levites because they did not have land of their own. Tithing is not a tax, they paid taxes in the Bible days. Tithing was livestock and crops. They did have a form of money in the Bible days, yet, God said from the land. It was not to conduct business, it was to take care of the Levites who was doing the work of God. Tithing became a secular law around the 6th Century and it was not originally done in America. We are to help the poor, widowed, ect. Remember, Jesus said not one brick will stand and the Temple was destroyed. Jesus was the final sacrifice. The church is the people. Church is never referred to as a building in the Bible. When the Word says Jesus is coming back for thee , He means believers. As believers, we are to help one another and you don’t need a church building for that. Help your communities or donate to a special cause. Get with other believers and read the Bible together.

    Although it has been said that it is the responsibility of the receiver of the gift that is responsible to God, I maintain too it is the responsibility of the giver to discern the correct receiver of the gift. To clarify, giving to a family in need as opposed to a "mega church", IMO is more discerning of the receiver of the gift. In other words making the effort to see that your gift is used to glorify God, as seeking out and giving to a family in need is, results a more honorable sacrifice to God and thus spiritually rewarding to oneself.

      Your under a better covenant. Jesus simply told the Pharisees that tithing is a matter if the law. The mosaic law said that blessings flowed according to obedience to the law , to fail in one is to fail in all.. tithe Is a numeric,, no more,, and not applicable under the covenant of grace.. Corinthians and Luke tell you all you need to know about Giving,, give sacrificially from the heart .. Remember,, you are blessed the moment you believe,, the quantum you give is not measured by a heavenly accounting system who then dispenses incremental blessing depending upon that quantum.. Jesus does not expect you to give up funding your childrens education, or your medical bills , or provide for a reasonable basic life that is not full of frivolous things..You have the Holy Spirit to guide you. Use it and remove fixations about quantums.. My pastor has a better life then me,, financially,, I know because I’m a Deacon who knows all of the churches finances.. in fact,, he takes supplemental stuff of tne membership giving to fund his kids college expenses,, pays zero taxes as well.. trust me,, he is Not the exception.. you are free in Christ and his yoke is easy.

    I concur with most of what you say. Tithing and giving are not the same thing, and preachers often use them interchangeably. Giving is a Godly, eternal principle. God is more interested in hearts and not amounts (2 Cor 9). Once you assign a specific amount to something (e.g. 10%), it is not a principle but a legalistic matter. Tithing was largely agricultural produce, hence the storehouse of Malachi 3. Offerings were animal sacrifices. I have heard people argue that tithing existed before the law (Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek). However, circumcision also existed before the law, and I don't hear many churches demanding that.

Just like the old widow that gave all she had. Do you really know what or why someone else is not giving as much as you? Your ten percent is different than your neighbors. When my husband and I finally grasped what the Lord was telling us on tithing, what a difference it makes. God in Heaven blesses us in so many different ways. Be content with what the Lord gives you. Very good. However, the giving each Sunday (and meeting together) is a stretch because if you take 1 Co 16 in context, he is specifically talking about setting aside an offering for them when they come, so they can give it to the believers in Jerusalem that are in need. Contextually, this reads like a one time event, and saving up every week for that one time event so it isn't such a burden. It doesn't say that they should give to the church the first day of every week, but each person save up every week for the offering. Jesus and the Jews met together on the Sabbath (Saturday) which was the day set aside to rest and focus on the Lord.
    No, I don't belong to one of those religions that worship on Saturday, :) I just have studied the Word, and believe it is what Jesus and the early disciples did.
    I am enjoying your videos. Just wish we could have more interactive discussions about it.

    • @thedowntoearthchristian
      @thedowntoearthchristian  7 месяцев назад +2

      I see you point but he says, "so that there will be no collecting when I come." If they saved it individually each week then there would still be a collecting when Paul came. If it was stored in a central location like the care of the elders there would be no collecting when Paul came.
      Also, the principle is have money set aside to meet a need when it arises. Paul's arrival was the "need" that needed to be met. Today, we have other needs that arise like benevolence cases, power bills, church building insurance premiums and so on. It would a fiasco to take a collection ever time the water bill came due, then again for the trash bill, then again the internet bill, then again for the electric bill, then again to help old Betty Sue with her car repair, then again for the preachers salary, then again for the ... ad nauseam.
      Hope that helps explain what I was trying to get at in the video.

      @thedowntoearthchristian I see your point. Our church doesn't ask for a collection each week or even talk about collecting unless there is a special need. We simply trust God to provide, and each person gives when they want either electronically or dropped in a box. We always have more than enough to cover expenses. We meet on Saturday evening because it is more convenient for our community to have dinner together and then worship together. My point is that meeting and/or taking a collection on Sunday isn't a requirement of Christians.

I was directed to the Scripture where God says to test him by giving a tithe. By doing so, God says I will bless you so much your storage room will overflow. I have to say, God has made good on his promise. After 30+ years of tithing and sometimes giving more, we have more than we need and meed a savings account to handle the overflow. Should we give because we're told to? Not if we don't want to give. We have gladly given our tithe, because we are so thankful for what Jesus did for us. And the fact that God fulfilled his Old Testament promise to us, we will forever be grateful!

God has been faithful to me regarding his promise in Malachi 3:10. So why would I want to question him for reasons not to tithe? Praise God! He is faithful to his promises!

    Since I no longer agree with some doctrines in the Churches today, I no longer give tithes to a Church. Instead I chose to pray and ask the Lord to place a American a Homeless or Veteran person in my paths the days I go to town. I'm now I'm able to help the homeless and veterans in my area. At least I know I give enough each person I see can get a fast food meal for that day. Unless they choose to use it for something they feel is more important. It's not my place to judge why their homeless that's between them and God. I'm doing my part to help others.

      It is amazing how many believers waste their energies arguing whether or not tithing is a New Testament doctrine. Tithing didn’t begin with the Law! According to Genesis 4:2-4, before the Law was ever given to Moses, Abel and Cain brought the firstfruits of their labor to God. Again in Genesis 14, we find that Abraham tithed-before the Law.
      But Old Testament tithing was just a shadow of what was to come. Although the Old Covenant saints were blessed through their tithing, we enjoy even greater blessings through our tithing today, because we bring our tithes to a High Priest, Jesus, who is greater than Melchizedek or any other Old Covenant priest (Hebrews 4-8)!
      But above all else, tithing is giving honor to God. Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine” (NKJV). It is such an honor and privilege to respect and honor our Provider with such a small gift as the tithe.
      That’s why tithing isn’t just a matter of the pocketbook. It is a matter of the heart. So, if you’ve been tithing as a religious routine, out of compulsion or without faith-that’s just bucket plunking. That’s not tithing. One who gives cheerfully is a true tither in the eyes of God (2 Corinthians 9:7).

      @@julienielsen3746 Paul wrote: "It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops." 2 Timothy 2:6 ESV. How can that be if we're supposed to give the first fruits to Christ? Did Paul get it wrong? Or has the concept of first fruits been rendered obsolete by Christ? Aren't we supposed to GIVE ALL?!? Christian theology can be so convoluted with regard to our position and authority in Christ. For example, how often we proclaim "I am IN Christ". Well then, if you are IN Christ and Christ has fulfilled the law, then you by virtue of being IN Christ have also fulfilled the law. But you have to tithe! Really? I thought scripture said there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Why then condemn me for not tithing? I am IN Christ who fulfilled the law. If you are IN Christ, and the tithe is (ostensibly) brought to Christ, how then do you not RECEIVE the tithe? Or at least share in the tithe (take what you need, like they did in Acts 2 and 4)? It is by being IN Christ that we have and share in all the benefits and blessings of Christ. Yet how often does the vantage point of Christians change - when it comes to the tithe - which is a matter of the law - do we have to exit Christ to give it back to Christ and not take part in (share) the tithe? Are we IN Christ or not? If as required by Christ I give Him my all, why are we talking about the tithe which is a mere 10%? If our attitude is 10% for thee, 90% for me, then I dare suggest we are not in fact IN Christ - for if we are truly IN Christ, there is NO ROOM for such selfishness. There is only selflessness IN Christ. He has your all, or He doesn't.

      @@jeremiahchapman9288 Money (coins) were used by people who lived in cities and towns. Many were skilled trades people like Paul who was a tent maker. They did not own vineyards, orchards, or animals. So, they had to use money. The tithe is a tenth of your “increase” whatever form that may be for you. For a herdsman, it was live animals. For a merchant it was money. Now of course, it is money to provide for the operation of God’s churches. But the principle is the same. Give to God and he promises to bless us.😊

    I agree. In Genesis 28 God promised Jacob the land of Israel. "I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying." Jacob was thankful and promised God, "...and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.” This vow was required of Jacob’s descendants. And that's why the required tithe is on the food and animals that come from the land. When the Jews were taken from the land, they didn't pay a tithe.
