Man, here’s what I’ve run into...I use Tidal, but I had Spotify for a period. I began listening to vinyl again about 2 yrs ago. Since then, I find listening to digital gets fatiguing. Much more quickly than before... I still listen to digital...but mainly just to sample what I’m thinking about getting on vinyl.
You know, I may fast be heading in that direction. Re-discovering vinyl w/ a decent turntable and cartridge (unlike the crap of my youth) has been a real eye opener. Cheers ...
I have been in vinyl front end fog 55 years alway loved Shure V15 v-MR. Used up 4 of these cartridges, Now I love my Grace F-9 Ruby cantilever and line contact
Ortofon drive me nuts with their pushed presence frequencies and sucked out lower mids/upper bass. The Sumiko Blue Points are so nicely balanced in comparison.
You described the sound of your new cartridge like I have described my $400AU Sennheiser Momentum headphones. The highs roll off a little early, but the information is still all there, which is probably a good thing for headphones, because it makes it less fatiguing for long listening sessions than brighter headphones. The mids are a little recessed for my liking, but all in all, I love my headphones, especially now that it’s complimented by my Audioquest DragonFly Black DAC and headphone amplifier! 🙂
Yes you can hear sonic characteristics of phone cartridges over RUclips videos. HiVinews does videos of cartridge comparisons and the sonic fingerprint can still be heard miked just as you have done. He did a review of the Grado Gold which sounded the worst for the money and I know this because I owned one, did not like it so I gave it to a young man just getting started. don't get me wrong I have owned the F3E on a Marantz turntable and had a GF2+ on a Phillips turntable which is still one of my favorite moving iron cartridges to this day. I moved up to the Ortofon X5MC which was my first high output moving coil cart and that was a milestone upgrade just like you discovered in regards to dynamics and detail retrieval. The rabbit hole just keeps getting deeper. Enjoy the journey.... BTW silver wire favors the highs and doesn't like the lows, copper likes the lows, same in speaker cables. That is a repeatable experiment.
Don't forget that all cartridges improve in sound after 40-50 hours of play. Could be that the ortofon will gain some bass and the sumiko improve the highs. It happened to me with the Audiotechnica AT120, massive sound improvement after "burn in" at both ends of the spectrum. It's basically the cantilever suspension loosening and the diamond's rough edges smoothing. Also due to psychoacoustics (the way our brain interprets sound) when bass is lacking it will seem like there's more detail and highs. And viceversa, when bass is present it will seem like there's less detail and highs.
Good point. I don't rule anything out. Looking forward to the Blue Point breaking in and as I already love it, hope it will only improve. The Ortofon was good, no doubt, and maybe it would have improved. But ... I'm impatient. Regards ....
The point behind these modern remasters is that they are made to sound better on smartphone + cheap headphones. For that, they are gutting dynamics and stereo. If you play original master (which is on records) on any headphones, you will find that at least stereo is made to melt into stage between your speakers which will result on headphones in strange TOTAL separation between instruments. So one of what these remasters do is that they are emulating this by "melting the stage" together for smartphones users. Which will always destroys the sound for HI-FI enthusiast. This is what makes the record to sound so rich, dynamic and "3d" in stereo and "digital remasters" so "shallow" and borring/empty. I use spotify via Vincent DAC-1 most of the time, as background to work etc. because its simply comfortable and i cannot enjoy vinyl when i have to do anything else and not just listen. I hope we will be able to buy records forever!
Evening dude ...i think i seen some of ur earlier vids ...u live in the country and can blast ur stereo fro time to time?? Im just wondering whats with the silver stuff behind ur stereo??
First off, how has it been living with the Cornwall's? The vinyl sounds fuller, warmer, the second cart sounds a little better to me. I just don't know how you vinyl guy's live with that needle crackling. Holly smokes it's bad. I have the LS50W's and it sounds like lightning through these speakers. The digital for me is so articulate, detailed and crystal clear I can't overlook the crackles on the vinyl and be happy. Tidal Master/Hi FI for me is the way to go.
Very cool. BP2 is better sounding. Less pops are noticed. Vandersteen used this cart on his setup to demo his Carbon speakers at the Munich Hi End show 2016. Louie Armstrong's voice was so real, you could swear his was in your face.

@edguyrocks Upgrading your cartridge and ensuring that your cart is aligned properly should make a huge improvement.

Yeah, that HiVinews guy is really something. Great channel.
Hi SP
The BP2 is lush, while the 2M Silver is a bit shrill. Can you say what turned you on to moving coil carts and the BP2 in particular?
silver winding coil affect 2M silver sound edgy and slightly hard
Man that ortofon was crispy and shrill

Huge difference, great purchase 👍🏻 now on my list 😃
Audible differences. BP2; lush and thick (my fav), Digital; full and articulate, O2M; a bit lean. - thanks man...good stuff!
Heck yeah. I feel the same way.
Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 Cartridge is the winner.
Have you heard the LA scalas speakers?

I have a feeling this is all filmed in a kill room, and Dexter is your role model. At least you have a nice amp though.

There is more bass with the sumiko blue point no.2
