The story behind this stotram(hymn) goes like this muni narad(messenger of gods) advised raavan(powerful king of Lanka now known as Sri Lanka) to bring Shiva(one of the 3 supreme God in hindu religion) to his place. Raavan being arrogant and haughty decided to uproot whole mount kailash(residence of lord shiva) to show his power to Shiva. When he started to lift the whole mount kailash Shiva pressed his foot thumb which crushed the raavan fingers and he cried in immense pain. Even after applying his full strength raavan couldn't get away from its weight. He waited for 14 days chanting Shiva mantras asking for forgiveness . Then on 14th day he made this stotram and chanted this to appease lord Shiva. After seeing such immense devotion and hearing such powerful stotram shiva smiled and freed him and gave him several boons being appeased by his powerful stotram. And from then raavan became the biggest devotee of the lord Shiva.

It is actually a prayer to the Devine God Shiva ( destroyer God, one of the supreme of trinity of Sanatan mythology). If you want you can learn about him any where. And this is not the full prayer. It is said that Raavana who was a very big devotee of Lord Shiva wrote this mantra or song . Long ago when Lord Shiva wandered this earth , He lived in the great mount Kailash . Raavan decided to climb the mountain , with a damru in his hand he started to sing this mantra/song with the beat of damru and began to climb the mountain , From the sound of damru and mantra Lord Shiva went into state of trance . Paarvati mata who was the wife of Shiva tried to awaken him that someone is climbing the mountain , but he was so in trance that even paarvati wasn't able to shook him from the trance . As Raavana almost reached the top of mountain , He ran out of mantras and stopped singing , at that moment Shiva awakened and kicked Raavana off the mountain . When Raavana was falling down he tried to stuck his damru to the mountain which resulted in creating a big crack line in the mountain ! That crack is still there in north side of the mount Kailash !

It is said that Raavana who was a very big devotee of Lord Shiva wrote this mantra or song . Long ago when Lord Shiva wandered this earth , He lived in the great mount Kailash . Raavan decided to climb the mountain , with a damru in his hand he started to sing this mantra/song with the beat of damru and began to climb the mountain , From the sound of damru and mantra Lord Shiva went into state of trance . Paarvati mata who was the wife of Shiva tried to awaken him that someone is climbing the mountain , but he was so in trance that even paarvati wasn't able to shook him from the trance . As Raavana almost reached the top of mountain , He ran out of mantras and stopped singing , at that moment Shiva awakened and kicked Raavana off the mountain . When Raavana was falling down he tried to stuck his damru to the mountain which resulted in creating a big crack line in the mountain !
That crack is still there in north side of the mount Kailash !
