I happened to have all 4 ATN´s (Ausbildungs und Tätigkeitsnachweis) for the Kanonenjagdpanzer, meaning I could function as commander, driver, gunner and loader. I came from Logistics, where I aquired the driving licence, to combat troops, where I aquired the other skills, so I assume I know a bit about the machine. It was VERY fast. We had some tuned versions in our unit which managed nearly 90 kph (55 mph). The gun was the venerable 90mm that had first seen action in the M36 Tank destroyer in WW2, and in the M26 Pershing, M47 and M48. The tank had only negligible armor, the idea was to fire and retreat to another prepared fighting position. Ammunition was HEAT and HESH, no way to defeat the more modern Soviet tanks (T72+). Driving was pure joy, the Diesel produced 500hp, the drivers position was similar to a sports car (legs stretched), the acceleration was amazing, turning radius was dependend on the chosen gear. On 1 you could turn on a dime, 2 and 3 were for faster speeds. Driving on roads was a nightmare. Tanks do stop AT ONCE. Any civilian car driving too close would be roadkill. A tank will not only stop at once, it will also rise its rear, so that a car can drive into the void - only to be crushed by the settling rear of the tank. In addition the vibration in a tank will make the rear view mirrors totally useless, so a tank driver can't even see if a car is behind him. So take my advice NEVER drive behind a tank in your car.
The gun was to weak and the 105mm would not fit. And the tendency was towards missile tank hunters like the Jaguar with HOT or re-purposed KaJaPa with TOW. The Bundeswehr also had a lot of "surplus" M48A2GA2 and those replaced the KaJaPa in the heavy companies of the Jäger Batallions while Jaguar did the same with the Panzergrenadier units And MILAN ATGM went into mass service in the early-mid 1980s as well. Small, lightweight, far better for fighting from concealment
And the crews where creative in hiding them. Under stacked haycubes ( Strohballen), in above ground public parking garages ( wrecking the entry gate ), in commercial garages etc. The beast in very low

@@mbr5742 Rheinmetall had offered a version with the 105mm Leopard cannon
This was built in the 60's. Long after 1945.
I was on this tank in 1976 as an American soldier on an exchange program it was awesome fast and easy to hide.
