      @@VetMedCorner, A video on picky cats would be amazing. My fella suffers from FLUTD. This has been a recent diagnosis and he makes it even more difficult as he is so picky. Won't eat stew types of food, will lick the liquid. Will eat a pate for a day, maybe two then over it. He is kibble crazy and has been so since he was a kitten. He has a S/O kibble (Hills) but I do not know what to do. I'd love to put him on a wet food diet but he'd starve to death. The kibble terrifies me as he won't drink much. (I have tried ceramic, stainless steel and even plastic fountains and bowls all with variations of well, filtered and spring water. The only one he goes to a bit more is the spring water in a stainless steel dish). Anyway... All of that to say, a video on how to work with a picky cat would be amazing.

      I have covered this a bit in my video about feline nutrition where I discuss the research about feeding canned vs kibble.
      You may wish to discuss with your veterinarian the Hills Urinary Multicare Stress and/or the Royal Canin Urinary SO + Calm as both those formulations are generally the 'go tos' for FLUTD patients. You could also discuss the Purina Hydracare product as it may be helpful.
      The good thing is that both those prescription formulas (including the kibble) are designed to encourage drinking and more frequent urination.
      There's also research showing that the urine concentration of cats is the same whether they eat kibble or canned food. The body will compensate for the amount of water in the diet and they will drink what they need to. The body cues thirst well and it sounds like you have multiple water sources, including running water options, which is great!

      @@VetMedCorner Sorry for the late reply, didn't notice your response. lol I do have him on the Science Diet calming formula (kibble) at the moment. We gave up on canned food. We decided we weren't going to make him miserable or ourselves by trying to force something on him. We'll try offering it as a treat now and then and see how that goes. Thanks for you replies and the work and thought put into your videos. I am sure I speak for many when I say its really appreciated.

    I learned so much thank you! Your videos are fantastic, thank you so much for making them!
    I had no idea of the importance of string toys. Makes sense why our cat loves this one long thick fabric ribbon we’ve had for ages so much lol. Do you have any favourites?

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  3 года назад +3

      Thank you so much for your feedback! I appreciate it 😊
      The most popular theory about why so many cats like play time with string type toys is because it's one of the best ways we can fulfill their hunting behaviour needs by mimicking pray for them with the toys (while keeping human hands safe)! Also, cats tend to like being active around dawn and dusk (ie crepuscular) so fulfilling their needs this way matters a lot!
      As far as favorite options... It seems to depend on the cat. Some cats really like feather types, or ribbons, or elastic strings with a toy mouse on the end! I also braided approximately four feet of thin sisal rope and put a few knots at each end as a cheap/home made option that has been super popular with my cats. Some people also say their cats really like the Cat Dancer toy.
      Once you find a few that your cat enjoys then rotate which one you are using every two weeks. I currently have six string type toys that my cat is a fan of, and I will offer him access to two of them at a time. Each evening (when it's my turn to play with him, my partner takes the morning!), I will grab the two and offer him a choice of which one he wants to play with that day! He will start chasing the one he wants, and off we go! It's so much fun!
      As the toys get worn make sure to replace them to keep the play time as safe as possible!
      I hope this helps! I look forward to hearing your thoughts/questions on future videos as well!

    Excellent info Dr thank you! Until you pointed it out and explained why, I never understood why my cuties always placed themselves to drink from the one water bowl that way (not so obvious with the other nor the fountain). Oh, they wanna be able to watch the room as they drink! Duh! 😀 And oh my our boy does have a stopwatch... I do have a question: Why do these carnivores love their grass so much?? Our Ruby for example has some salad almost every day...

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  3 года назад +4

      As we can't ask them why they like cat grass 😉 our best guess is that it helps them pass hair (swallowed while grooming) through the gi tract. It may also help with digestion, and some might like how it tastes!

    My family has a rescue kitty that was declawed on all four paws and then left at a no kill shelter-is there anything we can do to provide her comfort?? She clearly is in pain but we arent sure how to help her :(

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  2 года назад +1

      You need to see your veterinarian for pain medication. Often more than one is needed so that your cat is receiving multi modal pain management.
      If you haven't watched the video about litter box husbandry, give that a watch as well to make sure you are using litter textures etc that cause less pain.
      Best wishes!

      The City didn't renew the contract with ASPCA so it's a mess the president and worker's are all gone imagine that I heard there's a Three day Euthinization period, I believe tax payer dollars should be used for the animals guess we'll see what happens 🤔🙂✌️

    A twin mattress leaning against the wall makes for entertainment and beefy shoulder muscles and a scratching post

      @@VetMedCorner nah, I'm no vet. Dreame of it for years before realizing the kind of people I'd have to deal with.
      The mattress idea stems from my youngest cat being a hyperactive lunatic at 3 in the morning.
      I had to rearrange a room and left the mattress standing against the wall overnight, woke up at 3 am to him zooming across the house and flying up the mattress.
      Thought it was hilarious so I left it there. Within a week his muscles really started bulking up!

    It’s so expensive to take them in. No vets will understand that people are struggling with the economic situations. SMH

    • @judithb4202
      @judithb4202 2 года назад

      You are confusing lack of understanding with an inability to adjust pricing. Economic situations impact veterinarians and their staff as well. It’s incredibly expensive to run a vet clinic, and businesses would not be viable if they discounted prices because of the economy. However there are subsidized programs (often through charities) for low income pet owners, and you should look into that if you think you may qualify.

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  2 года назад +2

      As preventive medicine is going to be cheapest, my recommendation will save money which helps those with budget concerns. Pet insurance can also be very helpful! I do discuss this subject more in this video, if you wish for additional information.

    Huge amount of incredibly useful information. But if that's 'basic" enrichment, I'm scared to know what "advanced" enrichment is. :-)

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  2 года назад +3

      I am so glad you found the information helpful! I'd suggest starting with one area where additional enrichment is required, work on that, and then after that move on to the next! Gradual changes are less overwhelming and a great way to break a task down into manageable steps!
      Unfortunately, many cats do not receive anything near appropriate enrichment. That's a big part of why I made this video. I'm hoping to spread the knowledge people need in order to give their cats a wonderful quality of life!
      I hope you have a wonderful time implementing the enrichment! I'm so happy that you have taken the first step of learning! It makes me so happy to hear that the video is making a difference!

      No other domestic animal is as close to the wild counterpart as the housecat. So it makes sense that there’s a lot of instinctual “wild” behavior that is important to express and stimulate for the full health of the housecat.
