How Juan casually brings up this casual notice in 2:45 gives me the chills EVERYTIME I pause I read it.
I remember this talk from so long ago, I can't believe it was only 6 years ago! I remember several of these points being absolutely life changing. It was before I had done any philosophy so it legit changed me. This guy is awesome.
This seriously puts ethics in perspective. Awesome vid. I haven't been disappointed by a Juan Enriquez talk yet.
This does not put ethics in perspective at all, the practice of ethics is continuously asking questions about the status quo. In this way, ethics should be seen as the discipline that changed how people thought about slavery and other controversial stuff in the past.
@@jornbesteman It does. The reason slavery ended was to a great extent because it was economically viable, thanks to new technology. Why didn't the practice ethics stop slavery much, much earlier? Why did the ethics of slavery change when it did? Mainly - it was because there was an economic alternative: industrialization. That's depressing, but that's what happened.
How is it possible that this video only has 637 views and 15 likes???
Nobody pranks anyone, pukes anywhere or blows something up - Which therefore isnt basic youtube-entertainment. - Dont have to mention how damn sad this statement is, as it contains a lot of truth.
One of the best TED talks. He really knows how to keep an audience engaged. I'm gonna check out his books.
Great Ted Talk, one of the best ever on this subject. Juan Enriquez, thank you so much for this, for making people think, most of all.
The most powerful line of this talk that breaks down most polarized arguments is 11:44 "how can you establish ethics for the next generation as technology changes what you can do?"
Wow, this is some truly fascinating stuff from Juan Enriques! Glad I spent 16 mins of my day in this mind-wakening content.
As a teacher of Business Ethics, I require students to view this and other presentations by Juan Enriquez. He's a terrific speaker and students find him "authentic". Thanks to TED and Juan for wonderful resources.
This is one of the most profound TEDx talk I've listened to yet. It's amazing how he dissects it from a position of objectivity.
Ethics subject brought me here 😣

Brilliant talk. I have been powering through a herd of his talks over the last decade or so and he is a fantastic speaker who brings multiple levels of reality into each talk.
Seriously one of the best Ted Talks I’ve listened to yet!
Short answer: If you don't know better, you can't do better. When you know better, do better. Period.
what a speaker ! I enjoyed listening to this a lot
Insanely impactful- Theres another book by Dr. Ruha regarding this- Race after technology
Nobel peace prize should be this.
Oh my god. How to make this video more viral. I have never seen ethics explained more clearly than this. Absolutely the realistic touch we need in this virtual world.
Outstanding video!!! Needs more views for sure.
Well said - we need patience and we need to bridge - with so much in flux staying centered with this core principle is key 🔑
came across this video doing research on enhancing ethical behaviour. Great video. Never taught of ethics in this kind of perspective.
Exceptionally presented! Worth pondering over at great length and details.
I could listen to this guy speak daily
I often cringe when a RUclips video is recommend for me, but this one was fantastic! Going to check out more of his videos
Incredible speech
great talk, shows you how truly vulnerable subjective moral values set by humans are.
Thank you for braking down this wall, i have also seen a lot in mechanics ethics, what i think but also keeps me up.
i think this largely ignores the idea that people know these things are wrong but do it anyways because there's some other benefit (mainly profit) for them
Absolutely phenomenal...so enlightening and really made me think again.
He's a living genius, ethics and morality is a very difficult and sensitive subject to touch on, and Juan Enriquez just made it sking past the thin sheet of culturally polarized ice.
Anymore and people can't swallow
the teacher "touches" you haha,,, ..... still awesome speech sir this will help me with my speech regarding the same topic in my class
This video is so important needs more views and more social media shares
Looking forward to the book!
Ética en Berlín, Juan sí sabe leer las necesidades de su público.
The 'Holy Book' never promotes slavery, it points out that obeying the laws set forth by those in power (typically non believers) should be obeyed. As long as people ignore God and take what is not rightfully theirs, humanity will endured slavery in one form or another.
Thank You - So True.
This is brilliant.
this is absolutely amazing
Amazing! it is very impotent issue ever.
finally the answer I was looking for
Great talk, well done sir!
Found it soundly INTERESTING!
@2 min "The preacher teaches you and the teacher touches you"
extraordinary
Who will be held accountable for the happenings that are still being practiced in some places, for allowing it to happen still?
Stupendous! If you're yearning for more, a similar book is an unmissable read. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
What is the name of the book he's referring to at 13:13
if you dont know, treat everyone fairly and kindly... then you can keep a decent compass.
Amazing!
I here bcos of my subject Ethics😘
Can someone tell me what are the problems in computer ethics? And how does this problem arise?
Wow, this guy is an exact replica of an older Gale Boetticher!
How did people allow the happenings being discussed in the video?
great video
Juan, I would love to talk to you about a psychological fraemwork for therapy that I am developing that uses the exact philosophical framework that you used to explain this timeline of ethical behavior. It's called Teleology. It utilizes a timeline with an ultimum to establish the result of our psychological processes to examine objectively how we can come to understand it's origins and it's end. Would you be interested in discussing this with me? I would be honored to explore this with you.
How was society changed, towards these circumstances, in the modern age?
Can someone explain to me what he means by "ethical mores"? Cant find it on google and english is my second language so I dont know how to change the word "mores" grammatically.
Mores are the customs, norms, and behaviors that are acceptable to a society or social group. If your personal morals are in disagreement with local mores, you should be prepared to be annoyed every time you read the local Letters to the Editor.
Why Mrs. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (Mary Howard Schoolcraft) titled as Mama? Please.
It was an example of a women who wrote from a "mother's perspective" on the ethics of her day. Her reasoning would be the norm of most white women at the time (who would influence their children). Hope that helps:)
@@wednesdaykahlo8569 Thank you.
Some teachings from parents and some from the doctrine of the church to distinguishes " right and wrong" "good and bad"
super cool and super awesome
the Bible teaches that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. period.
;z) The best way to..'do that') is to travel.. because when you live all over.. or just travel if you never done much.. you build because 'history' in certain degrees' is alive everywhere. depending on where you start from.. everywhere seems like it's living in a different history.. ( expecially from EU/California ;p
What is eithics ,ideology or a way if veing human (mankind) .....If you are not apart of mankind then your of the animal kingdom speaking of humans....Artifical intelligence is human thinking and being if Ai surpass your way of thinking then you are if the animal kingdom
Very Interesting thoughts on this topic. Digital ethics is definitely a topic people need to talk about more often also the transformation that happens due to it is also important for people to be informed about. See another thought-provoking video about digital ethics and transformation: @
but you should be kind to others and treat others the way you want to be treated, so unless slaves were treated like family "all your family" then you should have known it was wrong, because you were treating people bad, same with "gays" you need to treat everyone like family and if you knew you were treating any people differently then you should have known it was wrong.
12:52
Brilliant
Interesting...
Why is it the he does not include science or scientist teaches what is right and wrong? He must include himself as well if he tries to teach us on the matter.
Intelligent man
this works
plant based
data based
?
Remove the thirty-second paused and this video would be about a minute long.
go ethics! go wdny
Religion, bible, parents, doctor, lawyers, police, politicians, adults.....
Is he implying that ethics have (or will/have been) determined by the market mechanisms? Dangerous in my view.
I see you'r point but wasn't slavery diffrent? I mean it was known how wrong and how much suffering slavery caused even back then?
It would be a shame if technology caused the downfall of ethics. just because you can doesnt nessaraly mean you should.
The teacher does what to me?!!
Welcome to the 21stCentury, .........
There is no clash at all between ethics and technology, on the contrary, in many universities, these disciplines work together, they both need each other. Ethics should be seen as a discipline that questions everything, so also the status quo and also potential progress in technology. The way in which Juan Enriquez describes ethics is not at all what ethics is about.
I think he’s talking from a perspective of time and space. Basically how ethics can be defined in different generations. Please explain how he explains it wrong.
ethical more?
You are talking about your friend
