FYI - the Vol down, '...' + power button, until you get the flashing light worked for me, but mine took almost 20 minutes to come on. I also tried everything (including that one) and nothing worked. So I just decided to try doing that one since it seemed to be at least doing something with the light flashing, and I just set it down and walked away. Came back with my coffee and started working on something else and suddenly I noticed something out of the corner of my eye... there was my screen bright and working on my deck! So, you might give that one a shot again before you give up and buy parts.
I've also heard people have had success with 'battery drain'. Letting the thing drain the battery completely lets it reset the power profile or something. I dunno about that, but thought I'd throw it out there since I didn't see you try that one. Great video!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS ACTUALLY WORKED OMFGDFOGMDFOGMDOFMGO
@@JoeyDoesTech we need proof of that then!
@@JoeyDoesTech Awesome!
@marcvdfv8431 Just put a picture up on RUclips :)
@@JoeyDoesTech No idea what happened to my post but glad this worked!
Joeys first adventures into Linux, priceless.
Its so adorable :3
Hahahaha! I'm assuming it won't be my last!
@@JoeyDoesTechI hope it won't
It's not an adventure without "Exit vim" epic quest!
"Should I just install Windows 10 or Windows 11 on it?" had me going "naawww" :D
Just bought a steam deck for repair , this made me more confident in getting it working! good job
did you get it to work ? Is the blinking supossed to stay the whole time untill its fixed ? If i press the buttons the light only flashes 2 times and then stops.
@@leoametle4157 Luckily for me the one I got only had a corrupted SSD so I swapped that out and it was perfect!
Shut it down by holding the power button and plug into the charger. Then hold Vol - and (…) and press the power button. When it beeps, let go of power but keep holding the other two buttons. This will reset the graphics/APU driver. If done correctly it’ll take longer to boot. My deck had the same problem and this fixed it but I found it tricky to do correctly
This is the way. Had the same issue after an update, and much like Joey I also found a lot of ppl posting the wrong instructions. Above steps is what worked for me. Extremely unlikely to be a hardware issue.
This worked for me also
Is the blinking supossed to stay the whole time untill its fixed ? If i press the buttons the light only flashes 2 times and then stops.
Since you can see the image on the screen, what you have to do is go into steam settings and change your update channel to "main". It's a bios issue. Check for updates and run them and the screen will work. Had this happen on two decks. Same exact symptoms. You're at the final step!
yes, i just went through this and doing this was the solution. i think you also need to enable developer mode to be able to access the main channel.
Just a quick heads up for if you buy any steam decks in future. The LCD ones have the grey sticks with black caps and a black power button. The OLED ones have an orange power button and completely black sticks. LCD's start at 64Gb storage and the OLED's start at 512Gb. Keep up the great work!
Never knew this, i was buying joystick skins for my Legion Go recently and was wondering if the steam deck ones fit on the Legion Go as well but noticed the Oled and LCD ones are different sizes
I can promise you the screen is fine and it's a software problem. I had this same exact thing happen to me on a faulty steamdeck i bought months ago and was able to fix it without even opening it. I just can't remember how haha. It was definitely some combination of button presses along with booting into recovery mode. I know I searched the same forums and videos you did because I remember doing a lot of the same things you did in this video. Keep searching forums and videos and ask your live stream, but definitely dont buy a new screen because it will be a waste of money.
The steam deck has a high repairability score because it's so modular. You can swap parts out easily. I loved this one Joey. They also boot into steam os which is a Linux based os.
Hey Joey, thanks for going above and beyond by trying to fix a Steam Deck you'd never tried before. It was a pleasure to watch
it.
Man what a great channel, rare youtube recommended W
A tip to know if your steam deck is on or off, if you press the mousepads, you'll get a feedback bump that you don't get when it's entirely off. Useful because sometimes the screen takes ages to come up, especially after battery reconnection
I'm a Linux Engineer, I was screaming the whole video, lol
I'm not, mostly work with windows but I'm still screaming with a bit of cringe 😬😬
The "BTRFS error" on device "sda3" mean that your USB stick where you installed the steam recovery is faulty. If there would be problems on the onboard storage it would show "nvme0n0". Write the recovery to a new stick, verify and retry.
This!
Fyi btrfs is basically a file system if someone didnt know. For you windows users you use ntfs and linux for example often use xfat or btrfs (there are also others). Pls correct me if im wrong btw. Dont want to spread wrong info. But i know my discription is very very surface level
@@itsdarkosLinux typically uses ext4 by default, although you can use all sorts of other file systems like btfs (or event ntfs but that's not recommended). ExFat is a Microsoft file format that's used when ntfs can't be, typically on flash drives or SD cards. And FAT32 is used for legacy systems or in some obscure cases
Actually a really interesting video, I enjoyed seeing the whole process from start to finish as you were discovering things so was I.
Glad to hear you got it working. The Steam Deck is an amazing hand held gaming PC. You probably don't see very many faulty ones available for purchase, because they are fairly easy to work on, and Valve is super cool about RMA for them. I'd love to see more Steam Deck fixes in the future if possible. The price on that was a bit steep for the 64GB LCD though, so be mindful of the cost of the SSD's for those. I wish mine had a 1TB internal drive. That should definitely help it sell.
As usual 'untested' on ebay means "we got it in, couldn't work out how to fix it".
Wish sellers would just be honest.
joey, you will never be a jedi with that lack of patience. let the light flash and go make dinner. :)
glad to you trying to fix a different item
Loved this episode, would love to see you working on it again based on the comments that know the issue or perhaps help from the stream chat! Also qould love to see more steamdecks!
I think the price you paid is high for a faulty one but thats standard on eBay!
I am placing my bets on it being a software issue not a hardware fault.
I would check BIOS version and then try and reflash it with a different version either with the steam tools or remove bios and put it in a programmer.
Looking forward to Part 2
Welcome in the Linux world KDE is a desktop environment. 😄 Nice video love it 😍 Grub is the start manager it check the devices for starting systems and create a menu to start the computer
12:02 bless your heart! i appreciate you being so honest about those little very human fudge ups!
6:44 when taking the Steam Deck apart, you can use the case lid as a jig to protect sticks and screen.
Here's couple of tips if you want to go on with the repair
First : display a picture with different colors so you flash a light you can see the color difference.
Second : test the pins for reading and go from there.
I hope it helps
First of all shoutout from all the way over from California but I have got a question that i feel someone can help me with, I know about tech but not alot about repairs and i thought id give it a shot here knowing theres a bunch of people that know here i have a late 2011 MacBook pro no turn on or nothing on screen but when i plug in a charger it shows charging near the charge port i havent had any luck searching for any help but i would like to try and fix it myself thank you all! Keep up the good work joey super fun to watch you fix stuff and also learn myself!!
If the problem is with backlight you can try to put the flashlight right against the screen and you will be able to see a little area around if the mateix is working. This is applicable to all screens
Awesome video! Went on a learning journey thank Joey
Cuppa tea, Turkey sandwich, and JDT! A Valiant attempt. and Great Video! You'll get it Joey. Thank you.
200£ for not working 64gb is a crime. The seller should be prosecuted.
the buyer should... you don't have to buy if you don't like the price!
He probably isn't technologically advanced and has overpaid for it, so for you it might seem like a scam but for him that's a good price. Also he might have set the price to 200 or best offer
Lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣
Yh i payed 270 for mine fully working 😂
I think the seller had put in a bigger drive like I dad to mine and just shoved the old drive in to sell that's why it had been opened
Try this
Make sure the unit is shut down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
Check that the unit is off, there should be no haptic response when touching the trackpads and no fan noise.
Plug in the provided power supply into the unit, you should see a solid white LED.
Hold the "Volume +" button and the "..." button at the same time for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds while still holding the buttons, unplug the power supply.
When preformed correctly you should see the power LED blink 3 times and after that the unit should not respond to using the power button.
Next, plug the power supply back into your unit. This will exit storage mode.
Retest the issue.
At first these troubleshooting steps did not work...
When I got to step 3, even though I had noted that haptic feedback being turned off, the moment I plugged in the cable I would hear the chime and the haptics response would startup again. That's when I decided to hold the power button AGAIN, while moving tracing on the touchpad until the haptics response stopped. At which point, I proceeded forward as normal to using the Volume + and "..." buttons, and then BAM... Things worked!
A lot of people say that upgrading the BIOS works. In fact Valve recommend it.
You can bring up the virtual keyboard pressing the steam key + X
(Not sure if it works on the recovery image)
you could look into installing an older version of the bios if it exists and/or go into and fiddle with the OS, terminal commands and such, had many problems similar to this on laptops with linux. You could install a different display driver or anything that has some kind of relation to the display.
It's a software issue with the bios. You have to Google the fix with updating bios. It probably works right now if you plug it in to tv, it just won't turn on handheld mode. I had the same issue with my og SD, it didn't turn on for 9 months, then found the bios fix, and it worked.
Hey dude ...I had this issue with mine and what fixed it for me is to open the back disconnect the battery and then reconnect...I know it's sounds simple but there might be a chip in the battery that syncs when re plugged in
This device is an 64 or 256 GB LCD. The 512GB version has a different non glossy display and a blue circle on the carrying bag. The OLED version has an orange power button and a orange circle on the bag.
Hey Joey awesome video. Seems like the screen might be faulty on this one I've taken mine apart a million times and the ribbon tends to be pretty easy to take out but its not my device so idk. Also FYI the little beep you can hear when you turn it on are the haptics doing a quick test on the touchpad. next time you turn it on have a feel its proper freaky. Good luck with the fix Joey!!
does the screen normally remain on when hdmi is used, maybe look for the chip that descides hdmi or screen? or is there a hidden setting to enable screen by default rather than hdmi??
keep up the good work happy new year Joey
the screen remains on when connecting an external display. it's the same as plugging in a second monitor on a pc. this is basically a firmware bug from an update. someone essentially turned off a switch and forgot to tell it to turn back on automatically. the button combo trick will fix it when done correctly.
I’ve had a weird software issue twice with mine if it dies while on standby. The LCD will no longer come on. If you hook up to an external display, you should be able to see the screen. If that’s the issue. There are button combos. I got off of Steve supportto do a reset on that.
Did he shoehorn a full size ssd in there?
You got ripped off bad I brought fully working 256gb steam deck for £170. By the way screen is fine this known issue with steam deck it normally caused by battery dieing while playing games it seems to break something.
that sticker outline is suspiciously the size of a cex sticker :)
I am so tempted to send you my GPD Win 3 to play with. On board audio failed - I attempted to Change the audio chip and failed so ended up hard wiring a USB audio circuit internally and redirected the speakers via that, I addition to one of the joypads then later collapsing into the unit. The amount of bodges I have done with the thing would make you cry, I'm not totally useless though, I did manage to upgrade my steamdeck into a white shell with a deck HD screen upgrade and 2tb NVME 😂
its a bios version issue, i had the same issue with one i brought broken from ebay took me weeks to find the issue but i found after i updated the bios to v18 it then came back too life ,also be very wary of keep removing the battery connector as over time the cables with slowly start snapping inside the mylar cover on the battery cable.
Great vid, please part 2 😊
Had this exact issue with my Week 1 Steam Deck after a year. I've tried everything for weeks, until i just RMA'd it and got a new one with the better fan from Valve. Never had this issue ever again, but it still sits in the back of my mind, that is could come back at any moment. I'm pretty sure, its some form of Software or Bios corruption, because mine happened, when I was using a weird power supply to charge it.
Could be nothing but @ 23:43 above the MAX IC (Top left corner) that black component looks like it has a hole in it.
Yeah you are right, maybe this is the line for the power delivery of the LCD
I am wondering if at any point after you got the os up and running if you had tried to boot it without an external display connected
Seen a lot of chat about the black screen of death on Steam decks, it seems likely it's a software issue but maybe at board level not user, if it was me I would hold off on the screen buy and do more research. Still as you say valuable learning experience.
Some research, people say the system has messed up while flashing the bios- I would check the bios version and see if there is any updated versions to flash too.
Just started the video and I already know how to fix it. The white strap goes under the Deck when it's in the case, so you can easily lift it out. Your welcome. You can probably edit this video to less than two minutes now.
I am cringing so badly throughout the video but it's entertaining
Only half way through watching, so you may go on to sort this out... but the error message about expecting VFAT and getting BTRFS. This is why it won't boot - Linux user here.
VFAT is used to format the EFI partition - that shows up when you look at the drives. This EFI partition holds all the boot information for the device. The BTRFS is the file system used for the storage. But, VFAT must be used on the EFI partition. If you install the .exe on there correctly, the device will at least boot up - probably to a blank system disk.
Joey, the last method did work on mine, however it took like 15 times, the last time i completely reset bios settings and tried, the light blinked for about 20 min(i sat it down and walked away) came back and it was on
Looking forward to part 2
Joey took the red pill 🤣
I never realised how easy the steam deck is for swapping out parts. I already have one but if i didnt that would have sold me 😂
Just seen the discord post happy you got it working!
Don’t beat yourself up cost money and there’s no better way to learn then getting in there. You gotta remember the video signal comes out one place, but it has to go to two separate places so just cause it shows up on the USB-C doesn’t mean it show up on the screen. You need to follow the path back from the screen and find out what’s going on. You find out what the voltage is supposed to be in the panel for the back. If the vocal isn’t there supply the voltage you can see through the screen.
Your steam deck case still has the white stripe in it so you know it's one of the launch models, later LCD models did not get the white strip in the case
I had The message of checking for available updates once, it was stuck until I connected the device to an Ethernet USB adapter, apparently It was stuck because it couldn't connect to the internet via Wifi
Joey, I would look for blown fuses maybe it blew to protect the screen.
This is a software issue. I had the exact same issue on a system I fixed. I updated the system and after it did the last software update, it did a bios update and that made the screen start working again. May or may not also resolve your issue.
When I have a device that seems to be working but doesn’t display I go get a really bright flashlight and check to see if it’s just the backlight
Try and diagnose it, perhaps find the power to the screen back light to test it works
The Steam Deck will only show on one screen or the other, whenever it's paired to a monitor it blacks out its own screen until you unplug it again. Might be helpful in your troubleshooting steps!
I really wish that steam decks didn't have the 22 pin LVDS connectors because you can't really find anything that takes those besides those cheap boards on the internet in order to test it outside of the steam deck.
Maybe try to bridge the video signals from the external port to the LCD-cable and find out if the backlight voltage is present on the connector or cable, if not present inject the voltage for backlight on the right spot and loock if the LCD get bright... maybe like that you can check if the LCD is the problem or the board.... that would be my idea....
Does a normal working steam deck screen go out when plugged into a tv thru a hdmi and screen on the steam deck comes back on when you unplug the hdmi? If so the deck may think its still plugged into a tv.
I looks like there is another connector on the LCD screen itself that may be the issue,
maybe the backlight is not working did you shine light at the screen to see if it has an image ?
The Steam Deck seems like a popular enough device where if you do wind up ordering the PCB and/or the screen, and it's not a fix, those components might still well come in handy in the future. Or at least retain most of their retail value if you don't use them.
"these things boot into windows I'm sure"😂
I'm not so sure man
Great video
I strongly recommend running the reinstall from the sdcard not USB. It's so much faster.
it looks like a windows port. So is there any monitor settings like dual display, external only, duplicate type projector settings that are off?
try checking the drive health on the 64gb ssd try hdd sentinel. it will tell you if the drive has failed which i suspect
You might wanna try flashing the bios to something as old as F7A0110. Their newer BIOS broke my Deck anyways
This might be a stupid question, but is it not possible to test the backlight of the screen some other way? Just to confirm the screen actually works; and it might indeed still be software related?
@@arch1107 Yeah I figured that would work to see an image. But I was more thinking running a few volts through the ribbon cable to see if it will actually light up. I have no experience in this; so again; it might be a dumb idea. In any case, it's seems to fixed anyway 😀
Absolutely criminal, the seller knew full well it was a 64gb SSD which is eMMC whereas the 256 and 512 are NVME, eBay sold shows working ones selling for 260…..
@ yeah, if gta v would fit on it, it’s more a comment on value more than anything else, why pay similar for worse storage
A bit odd that you get an 4k output as the screen only supports 720p. Maybe that is why it's not displaying anything. Is there any settings for that in the bios?
@arch1107 okay. When I plug my 4k tv to the steam deck, i only get 720p. Haven't tried in desktop mode though
You tryed updating the bios as I know the bios on earlyer decks was an issue were screens would go black
I had this when I had my day one Steam Deck. They're really finnicky, lots of software issues. I can't remember what I did though but it's definitely fixable and I'm sure its software!
I guess if it’s windows it’s possible the output has changed from dual extended or mirror to external only
I don't know the system but did you try turning up the Brightness. ON the display.
Still, it was funny to see you struggle with Linux, partitions, file structure types etc. Certainly wouldn't be the first!
Nice!
I own a steamdeck and it convinced me to go Linux on all my devices, might be the back light try shining a very bright light off axis on the frount and you shoukd see if there is any image on the screen the repair wiki may be helpful has test points and there values but from the video Definitely looks like no back light mine even with usbc dock untill it boots has backlight on even with no picture untill in the os then turns the backlight off
Finally not live stream knockoff :) i have to say i don't like the videos that are just cuts from live stream :(
I think it is the motherboard. Ifixit doesn't stock them found cost about £200 ouch. It runs Linux no windows. There should be some buffers or control pin to stop the lcd display. Perhaps google the part numbers you can see. If you had a scope you could monitor signal present or not on the LCD connector. Is it possible to get the screen details and buy a driver board to test it? I know you can do old laptop screens to monitors that way. Food for thought
Can anyone lend Joey a Steam Deck so he can swap out the LCD screen? It's risky I know. I'm sure he will give you due kudos for the favour.
Does the steam deck work link the Nintendo switch with the usb port acting like the hdmi out
I had this issue breached out to valve and they had me send back and sent me a replacement but i was first user and in warranty so cant really help with what the issue was 😂
To me it sounds like it is some form of display mode error. Like on windows when you connect to a display and can duplicate, extent or change display screen. Might be a setting in the Linux OS which steamos is based off
To extend your display in Linux, you can connect a monitor to your computer and adjust the settings in the Displays panel:
Connect the monitor to your computer
Open the Activities overview and type Displays
Click Displays to open the panel
In the display arrangement diagram, drag the monitors to the desired positions
Click Primary Display to choose the primary monitor
Select the orientation, resolution, scale, and refresh rate for each monitor
Click Apply
If you're happy with the new settings, click Keep Changes
You can also choose to Extend these displays from the Multiple displays drop-down menu to expand your desktop across each monitor.
If you're using a laptop, you can turn off the internal display so the graphics chip doesn't waste resources on it. To do this, click Single Display, select the monitor you want to use, and click Apply.
Try changing the brightness while unplugged from the external screen.
Battery saver mode in bios solves this problem. Please look up activating battery saver mode. It does seem like that and I have this fairly regularly on my steam deck.
How about the backlight of the screen?
i think it's a bios issue, i also had that 400mhz bug and restart it and was fine, try to update the bios, everything else u done
Probably a silly thing and I know you not silly but as you said it’s windows is there a display setting output make sure it not set to hdmi, I don’t think it will be this but you never know
Whenever my steamdeck runs out of battery trying to turn it back on even after recharging it, is a pain in the ass.. press or hold the button it will flick on and off multiple times until it decides to stay on.. normally I fix anything with the steamdeck just by unplugging and replugging the battery a few times
Sounds like the circuit that tells it whether it's meant to be on the screen or output is wonky
