Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio
Judas Priest - Electric Eye and even Epitaph
When I listen to these 2 bands I ALWAYS pick these concerts, much more dynamic and powerful as the studio stuff
The only band that always sound great to me because they are so close live next to their studio stuff would be Placebo, they always perform great.
Metallica also great live or studio
99% I´m a studio album guy
Michael Jackson, Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi ... all are nothing for me live, specially Bon Jovi. I love their stuff till Young Guns and in parts Keep the Faith, but I never could listen to them live
That Iron Maiden live in Rio is excellent so is the Flight 666 DVD and CD where they reenact the entire Powerslave tour in 2009! Live after death is good - especially the concert version of the Flight of Icarus - totally awesome- I am with you on the studio stuff for the most part I will take studio just for sound quality - thanks for sharing - great comment - I am going to pin it 😁 - we have more fun stuff on the way like our latest video- be sure and subscribe if you haven’t already- this way we can stay in touch 😉
@@GrayBeardsNation you also know the 2 Priest concerts? Mega, true pure Heavy Metal
Great video, and I know you can only cover so many albums, but I think Genesis' Seconds Out is one of the best live albums ever.
Correct, and agree
Humble Pie, Rockin the Filmore, one of the best
@@peterwynberg Humble Pie!’ I don’t know if I have heard that album- will look it up and add it to the channel playlist- thanks for sharing!! 😁❤️🇺🇸
A few not mentioned
Paul McCartney and Wings -Wings Over America
Kinks- One for the Road
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo
Cal Jam 2 - various artists
Pink Floyd - Pulse
The Who - Live at Leeds
The Rolling Stones - Get Your Ya Ya s
Rainbow - On Stage
You know - you are the only viewer to mention Uncle Ted - Even I forgot about double live gonzo and it is a great album!!
Wings over America is not only one of the best live albums, but also one of the best live video captures of a full concert.
OK, the objectively, infallibly true greatest live album ever that fit perfect in this video is: Strangers in the Night by UFO. My brother bought the album when I was in 5th or 6th grade. That thing rocked me right through High School, College and retirement. They were a good band in the studio, but I never really noticed them until they put that live thing out. It often shows up alongside Cheap Trick at Budokan and Frampton Comes Alive. Great video and great channel despite this clear failure. And PS: Running on Empty really doesn't belong on this list. It's just too much of a studio album in my opinion. It belongs on a unique concept album maybe, but that was a stretch.
Hi thanks for your message- your are not the first person to suggest UFO - we have added it to the channel playlist- I tend to agree that Running on Empty is a concept album even though is was recorded on the road it is not live proper - stay tuned for more fun!!
Rush Exit stage left is the best sounding live album i have. Have the foghat but YYZ sounds amazing on ESL .
I completely agree - as an avid Rush fan and collector - that album stands out as a phenomenal live performance!! A must have for any Rush fan for sure 😁 Thank you for watching and for sharing 👍😊
Interesting thing about the Foghat live is the album is only 6 songs. There were, of course, many other songs, but the bandhas had no luch finding them so they could re release them on a new extended relaease.
UFO and Thin Lizzy should be on this list
@@bornces love some UFO and Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous is a really good album - I will add each to the channel “Rocking Live Albums” playlist! Thanks for sharing 😁❤️🇺🇸
I’ve got a question. “The Band” / The Last Waltz…would that be considered a live album? One of my all time favorites!
Hell yeah!! Great suggestion!
Glad that you mentioned the expanded Deep Purple in Japan set. There's an even more complete 5 CD version out now. Quite a few sets out there now of similar composition, ie: the complete concerts that some great live albums were "cherry picked" from. Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus is one of them. Chicago has the complete week of shows that Live Ay Carnegie Hall was culled from... 16 CD's worth! Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous, Allman Bros. At Fillmore East, Humble Pie Rockin' The Fillmore and Be Bop Deluxe Live In The Air Age to name a few more. King Crimson too!
Thanks for the great comments! Love me some early Chicago. They were a real r&b / rock machine., Their concert at ingleweed is available on RUclips and 25 or 6 to 4 is ridiculous!!!! Awesome....Humble Pie also! I have so much King Crimson live that I have to pace myself in how much I bring them up!
How about Live at the Harlem Square Club by Sam Cooke and Live at the Apollo by James Brown? Two classics.
Great suggestion wulybuly, especially the Sam Cooke. Excellent recording and perfomance
Hey Guys really enjoyed your video
🎶 🎵 😊 🎶 🎵
Thanks Tina!!!!
What about Joni Mitchell's "Shadows and Light" from the tour? And, of course, the Allman Bros "Live at The Fillmore East".
You touched on all my favorites I’m 66 and I grew up with all these albums back in the day. I always thought they sounded great. I didn’t know any different. But how about Lynyrd Skynyrd? “One From The Road” P.S. I subscribed. I just thought of this, Grand Funk has two live albums I really like.
Thanks for subscribing! Also, I'm not sure how we neglected Skynyrd. Big time should be on there
@@larryketzes5582 thanks for the correction at the end. If Yoko Ono is an E… ELO has to be moved up to a D. Back in the day we used to tell everybody when we listen to George Thorogood, our neighbors listen to George Thorogood. Along those lines I lived in a small town, and I actually had a funeral director who had to come over to my house “more than once” to ask me to turn my music down while they were having their funeral. I kind of feel bad about that. Kind of.
@@Bo-hb3eo thanks for subscribing to the channel and for reminding Larry and I about Skynyrd! Out of the 100+ comments you are the first to mention it 😁❤️🇺🇸
Great topic, guys! Well done.
Thanks for watching 😁👍🇺🇸
Love Linda, going to make some phone calls to my local shops to see if they have that album.
If you love Linda, you are going to be one happy camper when you get Live in Hollywood!!! Thanks for commenting!
Strangers in the Night ~UFO
Journey Captured Live is a masterpiece. Perry's vocals are at their absolute best and the harmonies are superb as are the musical performances.
STYX Pieces of right Live and Caught in the Act are both standouts as well.
Hey Steve - thanks for the suggestions - we will add these to the channel playlist!
How about the best of both worlds - albums with both new studio and live performance of previous hits? two of my favorites are Santana - Moonflower and Earth, Wind and Fire- Gratitude.
Excellent idea and some great picks - adding the music to the channel playlist and your idea to the backlog! Thanks for watching and come back for more fun!
Humble pie rockin the Fillmore and definitely allman bros Fillmore!!!
@@tgrupp1247 been (re) listening to that album this week thanks to you and the other viewers suggestions!! Thanks much!! 😁❤️🇺🇸
Missing UFO, Thin Lizzy, BOC, Allman Bros and Frank Marino.
I'm curious if you guys ever been in a band. Just wondering .....
Hi Tom - great suggestions - especially UFO - underrated IMO 😐 - both Larry and I have been in bands - I started playing live professionally when I was 15 with my Dad in a country rock band - I moved on to several rock and metal bands until I joined the Navy. While in the Navy I played in the ships band and wrote and recorded several demo albums with a shipmate - after I got out I built a full scale recording studio and recorded with several bands - feel free to check out one of these adventures here: www.goldenimagemusic.com (yes the channel name is “repurposed”) - I will let Larry tell his story when he replies - thanks for watching and stay in touch!! 😁❤️🇺🇸
Hi Guys
Great Subject
my Fav Albums are
Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous
Kiss Alive
Iron Maiden Live after Death
Judas Priest Unleashed in the EAST
Iron Maiden Live in japan
Led Zepplin how the West was won
What a great call out for How The West Was Won!!!!
My favorite Live albums are the Beatles live at the Hollywood bowl it’s a real fantastic album and I love hearing all the girls scream throughout Annette captures what Beatlemania was actually really like and it’s a very fantastic album I love it and one liar valve on my love it’s a box set a seven CD box set five different performances or so and that is the box that called out of this world 1970to 1997 done by Emerson Lake and Palmer what an amazing group they really were alive and their studio work is just as fantastic. and another one I really love is George Harrison live in Japan it’s great to hear two guitar players playing together especially George Harrison on slide guitar and Eric Clapton on non-slide guitar lead guitar and I especially love the live version of one of my guitar gently weeps the whole album is really good. And I also love Paul McCartney back in the US live 2002 what’s a good album although I wish that they would’ve kept the introductions it doesn’t matter if the stories were along or not and there are three songs that are missing at the concert which I was there for lemon Michelle and she’s leaving home. it’s a very fantastic album I love it.
That Beatles at the Hollywood bowl when first released was almost unlistenable but remastered a few years ago and the documentary by Ron Howard made this album so awesome to listen to! And listen to While My Guitar Gently Weeps from Harrison's Live in Japan. I can't believe you brought that up. Great album, a little hard to find. We need to hang out and listen to some tunes together!
Yes Larry we do need to hang out and listen to some great music live in Japan I first listened to it as part of the George Harrison box that called the dark horse years 1976 to 1992 and the album was released in 1991. I love the live in Japan album because it has some great songs on it like piggies and taxman which includes lyrics that weren’t on the final version but they were written. And I love at the end of while my guitar gently weeps George Harrison says Eric Clapton psycho guitar psycho and guitar and then George Harrison says hey man let’s do cycle guitar and then the album ends with roll over Beethoven which is sung wonderfully and played wonderfully by Eric Clapton and George Harrison. it’s a great live album all the way through. so is Paul McCartney back in the US live 2002 album as I mentioned before the concert for George is good too if you’re not into Indian music then you can surpass the first disc of it but it doesn’t clued Jeff Lynne singing the inner which is the best side to the Beatles single lady Madonna there are two albums I will mention one is a single album the dance by Fleetwood Mac I used to have it on Cassett it’s a fantastic live album and there is one live box that if you don’t have it you should get it it’s called live by Fleetwood Mac it’s a CD plus a triple LP album set it’s a great live performance in Boston Massachusetts those are some really great life cuts you get the live versions of afraid Rhiannon along with other songs too. and there’s one symphonic metal album which is good I love it still it’s Metallica S&M Symphony and Metallica I have never heard of metal and classical music melded together until I listen to this live album.
My fave live albums:
Kansas - Two for the Show
Magnum - Marauder (incredible sound)
Queen - Live Killers
Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the Studio... oops I mean Unleashed in the East
Rush - All the World's a Stage
The Who - Live at Leeds
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
Genesis - Seconds Out
Duran Duran - Arena
Very nice round up!! That Live Killers album was my favorite when I was young- will be checking out that Magnum album - I think I have the Duran Duran - need to check 😁 - thanks for sharing 👍
Nice list. If you are a Queen live fan, I'd check out Queen Rock Montreal, and Queen Live at the Rainbow. Thanks for the great list!
@@GrayBeardsNationI’ve heard that Arena wasn’t really live, but different studio cuts augmented by crowd noise. I don’t know how true that is, though.
@@georgeprice4212 On the queen live killers?
@@GrayBeardsNation no. The Duran Duran “Arena” album.
styx caught in the act
Another great live album - Donny Hathaway “Live” truly exceptional ❤😊
Not familiar with that one, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
Devin Townsend has great live recordings. I prefer his Royal Albert Hall concert to the studio versions of the same songs.
Wow! Honestly I had to look this artist up and this guy is super talented- yet another Canadian musician that, for some reason, I have never heard of- THANKS for turning us on to some new musical adventures - please stay in touch 😁❤️🇺🇸🇨🇦
@@GrayBeardsNation You should also check out Big Head Todd and the Monsters in the Red Rocks live concert. Great recordings there.
I love John Lennon live in New York City it’s a really good album I should check out the CD version.
I wish you hadn’t taken that CD back, you might’ve enjoyed the music of John Lennon and I don’t think that your speakers gotten blown thanks to Jinga I know it might’ve been because he may have turned the music up loud but live in New York is a great album several of Paul McCartney‘s live albums I think we’ll be good there’s one concert tribute I love it’s the concert for George the audio cd version doesn’t have some of the songs like the double disc DVD set does but it’s a fantastic two album set a wonderful tribute to one of the former Beatles George Harrison done a year after he died on November 29 2002 it’s a real fantastic album and I love how Paul McCartney goes into something he starts off with a ukulele then it goes right into the song something featuring Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton and what a fantastic live album and also a great tribute album when I don’t have yet but I plan on getting us the Keith Emerson tribute album called fanfare for the uncommon man.
yea, the music on that cd was fantastic. Just can't get past Yoko's voice. Just not my flavor.....
Framton comes alive is an example of how important a good producer is. The hit songs from it sounded flat and dead on the studio album. That band was so good that they should have just recorded it live in the studio.
We could not have said it better ourselves- great comment - thank you for sharing and fir the positive feedback 😁❤️🇺🇸
Bob Seger and Live bullet. Grand Funk Railroad Live
Shea stadium New York.
The Band Last Waltz Rock Of Ages Before The Flood
Nice suggestion- I will add it to the video/channel playlist!! Thanks for sharing and watch more fun OTW! 😊❤️🇺🇸
There’s one live concerts that I love it’s on DVD it’s not a CD box set but I think it’s fantastic it’s dream ticket by Elton John it includes three concert performances full concerts by the way one was called one night only and the other one was a concert featuring the London Symphony Orchestra and one of the other concerts I love this Elton John performing solo live in Turkey the country which was fantastic and another cell and Larry and Todd if you guys love Emerson Lake and Palmer I highly recommend you get out of this world live they have it available on CD or vinyl it’s fantastic and I think the live albums are really good
The London Symphony Orch show and the Live in Turkey are both fantastic and mastered well so the sound is excellent!
Lee Greenwood... Live in Fresno
Interesting choice- I will give it a listen 🎧
I think Live at Fillmore East should have been in the top one or two. Another fantastic live performance, one that you missed, is Miles of Isles, with Joni Mitchell and the LA Express.
As I told another commenter who said Allmans are top tier - it’s been awhile since I put that on the turntable- will do it tomorrow and beg for forgiveness after that 😁 - thanks for sharing!!
My bad and I apologize. Live at the Fillmore East is got to be on the short list for one of the Best Live EVER. I'm sorry and consider it top tier on my list.
You guys are full it it. Allman brothers live at the Fillmore East is the best. Also Hendrix in the West was Hendrix best live album... on and on
You know it’s been awhile since I listened to Allman Bros. at Filmore - I actually have a DBX encoded LP (and a decoder - yes I am a nerd) I will give it another spin tomorrow- now Hendrix we may have to agree to disagree on that - check out the background on the that record- it’s a hodgepodge of musician’s and songs - while all decent it’s hard to gauge an actual full out performance- I am sticking with Band of Gypsy’s on this with a shout out to the remastered version of Jimi at Woodstock - thanks for sharing your thoughts!! 😊❤️🇺🇸
I will fall on the sword for this one. I should have argued and pushed for the Allman's at the Fillmore East as absolutely top tier. Brain fart by me. Consider me corrected.....
There is so much tension right now. Waiting to see if you mention the ACTUAL greatest live album of all time. Halfway through, still not mentioned. I'm not going to be happy...
In addition to what we covered in the video there are nearly 100 comments with additional albums- hopefully SOMEONE pointed it out 😁
So...give a hint....
MC5 Kick Out The Jams is a powerful live album.
Yes - super suggestion- I will add that performance to the channel playlist- thanks for sharing 😁❤️🇺🇸
Agreed! That song by the way was on my favorite collection of Heavy Metal songs, Heavy Metal!!!!!
Parliament/Funkadelic: P-Funk Earth Tour
Great bands - will check these out!! Thanks for sharing 😁❤️🇺🇸
as far as McCartney is concerned his best solo album is “Ram”… but the best Wings album is “Wings Over America” i like few of their studio albums but i’m going to say that “Wings Over America” is way better than “Venus & Mars” and to a certain lesser extent “Band On The Run” although i love that album, i like it OnLy with “Helen Wheels”… The US version. that’s why i say that Paul’s 70s band Wings was just better as a live band. although few of thier studio albums are fun…
Not only is Wings Over America also my favorite Wings album, I saw the concert premiere in a movie theatre! Paul is such an underrated bass player and singer. Also Joe English on drums and Jimmy Mccullough on lead guitar are both fantastic to listen to and even better to watch the movie. I bet you can find it on youtube......
it was on Amazon Prime. Wings was a great live band. It’s as though Paul wanted to create a band to tour not just record albums..
Toto Falling in Between Live
The zepppelin movie always gets criticism plant was a bit off page made some mistakes but its still great listen to the unedited no quarter solo is the best the song remains the same rain song great stairway and dazed are top notch performances . Unfairly judged by people who dont like them
Thanks for the comment Mike. I love Zep, and I think my favorite Zep live, besides all my boots of course, might be How The West Was Won
Cheap Trick Live at Budakan is such an energetic collection. The Bodeans also have a lot more energy in their live performances that their studio efforts. Aerosmith Live Bootleg was attrocious. Sound quality is horrible and everything sounds rushed, maybe because of where they were with their drug use.
You are spot on- Larry and I discussed Cheap Trick as a part of the show but we figured a viewer would get it for us and YOU DID 😁 - thanks for sharing and watching the channel 😊❤️🇺🇸
Saw Areosmith HEADLINE GIANTS
STADIUM, AUGUST 1978. WORST
PERFORMANCE EVER!!
Wow.. No Live Bullet?
@@aspalovin live bullet is a good performance - thanks for sharing! 😊
Straight up miss! Not only is Live Bullet a great live album, but Turn The Page is one of the best live renditions compared to the studio!!!! Thanks for calling that out...
The Who Live at Leeds !
@@betamax2090 good suggestion- another viewer mentioned this album as well - I dusted off my copy to listen to again and you’re right this one rocks!!
Everyone misses the original Genesis Live (Peter Gabriel era). Every song on this album is better than the studio version (off albums Trespass, Nursery Cryme, and Foxtrot). You also missed Lou Reed's Rock n' Roll Animal. With Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner on guitars, this is better than any other Lou Reed album. In spite of the fact that Lou himself didn't care for it.
@@eximusic you are not the first viewer to bring up that Genesis album - not sure I have ever heard it - I will add it to the Channel Playlist and check it out- love that Lou Reed - haven’t listened to it in a long time - will spin it again- always looking for fresh additions to the playlist 😁❤️🇺🇸
You are correct in that Genesis Live does outperform their studio counterparts. So difficult getting in so much good live stuff in a short period to talk about!
@@larryketzes5582 Yes, but Genesis was unique in the level of their musicianship in live settings, and Gabriel's emotion in his voice. Uncanny. Several of the other pics in this vid don't really have that. You expect some sloppiness live. Don't get any of that with Genesis.
The song remains the same is the best live album of all time
@@markfrost2707 We appreciate your feedback - it’s really not bad but I if you listen closely they could have put a little more effort into the performance- it’s just kind of tired feeling ITS THE ZEP DAMMIT!! 😁 - thanks for sharing- stay cool 😊❤️🇺🇸
Waiting for Columbus was heavily overdubbed. Lots of guitars and vocals redone.
@@Cpayne30 thanks for sharing and your absolutely right- the very in depth liner notes does say that the vocal recording in a few of the takes were not so good and they needed to add some additional ‘love’ to it 😁 - I suppose with the expense of lugging large, sensitive recording equipment to a live show (especially in the mid-70s) with the intention of making a live album they may as well make it shine - and it truly is a good album! Thanks for sharing and making us dig and LEARN!! 😁❤️🇺🇸
Air quotes need to be added to the live albums that are better than studio. I like many live tracks better than the studio recordings. All of them have been overdue bed, most of them extensively.
Hi Eric - I totally agree with the “air quotes” here - after some research I am finding more and more live performances have been doctored up in the studio- from what I am gathering, this was due to costs. Obviously in the 1970/80s (before the compact digital age) large tape machines and full production recording trucks were used. The cost was high and this limited how many times they could record the shows before it became ridiculous- I guess it makes sense 😁
Zeppelin concert movie wasn't best performance but still better than everyone else the no quarter unedited version is the best guitar solo played listen to the uncut version
Good observation Mike - I will add No Quarter unedited into the channel playlist - thanks for watching!
Missing Wishbone Ash.
Love that Wishbone Ash - very underrated! We didn't miss it - YOU reminded us :)
Band Of Gypsys, Live At Leeds, live Cream (not the drum solos), From The Muddy Banks Of The Wiskah (not better but just as good as the studio albums), no albums but 70s Sabbath was better live (youtube: BLACK SABBATH - The Legendary Soundboard Tapes)...
lol - “not the drum solos” I get it 😁 - will check out the Sabbath soundboard tapes - I have an Ozzy bootleg LP with Randy Rhodes that is very good!! Thanks for the suggestions and for watching- more fun OTW😊❤️🇺🇸
Frampton, Kiss, Cheap Trick NOT legit totally live albums! They all were overdubbed and had vocal and guitar parts replaced in the studio! A legit live album is totally from a live performance. The only thing done in the studio is mixing the sound. The 3 best totally live albums are The Rolling Stones Get yer Ya yas out, Aerosmith Live Bootleg, Allman Bros Fillmore East. Totally live recordings and remixed to print on vinyl.
@@kittykay8015 really good feedback- now that I think about it- why would an artist use a really high end studio like Electric Lady to mix a live album - probably to add some “secret sauce” to the recordings - I feel like we did some reasonable research on the live albums we spotlighted - beside Wikipedia- what other sources do you use? Thanks for watching and keeping us in check!!
Wow, was not aware that the Frampton was so overdubbed. I agree with your assessment on the Stones and Aerosmith. Come Together and Back In The Saddle baby!!
Great video - I think you are all right when you mentioned Led Zeppelin Song Remains The Same - it’s a pretty dull album - Jimmy Pages guitar playing is really not good - another example of “cheating” Jimi Hendrix posthumous album Crash Landing- not really a live album but live demos overdubbed like crazy - obviously to make a buck after Jimi’s passing ☹️ - maybe you guys can pull together a video of albums that “cheated” 😊
@@ContentedPug I put it on the list - thanks for the feedback!! 😊❤️🇺🇸
did you bump your head?
The unedited no quarter solo is the best ever played
