Today, we talk about Dedra Meero sharing her suggestions about the Empire & the ISB fully beginning the hunt of Cassian Andor & Luthen Rael!
I love how careful and fearful Partagaz is in this scene. It fits so well with the middle-management who typically has to worry about those below and above him as one mistake could be fatal. Brilliant acting by Anton Lesser
Brilliant acting, both on the part of the actor and the character. We can tell that Partagaz is carefully "acting" to emphasize the gravity of the threat "Axis" poses. The way he says, "troubling". Brilliant
*Indeed. It always starts at the top before it trickles down to the lower staff members. And Partagaz was definitely careful with his choice of words that expresses that the ISB should go after Axis & not just Cassian.*
YES! Anyone working in corporate America is surely familiar with that phenomenon. You're in a meeting with higher ups trying to make your point/sell your idea, and your Director shows how he attained that level by carefully demonstrating an Oscar-worthy "fence sitting" performance of obeisance. "I'll support my guy, but not at the risk of my own career." I thought Yularen was similarly perfect. Doesn't even make eye contact..."I'm listening." Right out of the executive handbook...
And Dedra's reaction! Relief and the realization that straight logic wasn't the best way to convince top management, but fear of the unknown.
Yes, but he balls to stand by Meero and back her up, goes to show he is more then just a toadie, he acutely cares about his duties despite being self-interested, its always nice have villain with convictions in the mix.
I think Yularan was commenting on the cost to test her and make her justify it, the actual cost was probably irrelevant, he just wanted to make sure that she actually needed those resources
Yeah, I respect that. Yularan is quite the official member we've seen from Republic to Empire, nice to see him around again.
Everything ISB has been superb to watch but Ms. Gough is so good as Dedra in all these scenes, it's hard to think anyone else could pull this off so well.
*I believe this to be true as well.*
I just watched some interview from her, shes delightful, but theres one interview that people in comments flared up im going back at them to check if they have eaten their words now.
Andor made it possible to like even an ISB officer.
*Well, I'd wager Rebels did it first to honest. This just have us more characters to like from the main building of the ISB to like them as well.* 😎
"She's a Nazi, George! A Nazi!"
@@MikeCGannon”Rebel terrorism!”
It's interesting to see how much colder Yularen became after he joined the Empire.
*Oh for sure. He's like this now. But we know that we'll see him calm his demeanor eventually.*
Not really, his portrayal in Andor is very inconsistent with his other imperial era appearances
@@mandarini16 that's what you get when the script's written by an actual adult and not mr Filoni over there..
@@anonymous-hz2unI was referring to Timothy Zahn's books but whatever
@@mandarini16I think the Yularen in the Thrawn books were calmer and softer largely due to his fondness towards Thrawn. Thrawn was also not his direct subordinate, so he was more respectful and considerate during their interactions. I don’t really know how Yularen acts outside the Thrawn series tho…
Gotta love the disinterested leader while looking down saying "I'm listening" Everyone else quiet or keeping a low profile so as not to be smacked by big daddy. The best employees not only tell the problem but have a solution.
*RIGHT!!!! Him reading the report. Dedra looking bewil by his response to then keep talking. A slight pause by her to see if Yularen has an actual response & then him questioning her needs to do her job while adding the cost. I'm just glad that we got this great scene here because it's another one of my favorite scenes in the Andor series.*
Did no one like Thrawn in Rebels??
To say that gender doesn't play a role in Dedra's challenges is all out ridiculous. This is a world of men. Not that they're consciously supplanting her, but she is clearly looked down upon. Written correctly like this show is, I can take her seriously and brand her a worthy underdog. She uses tact and wise to maneuver her way to victory, she's very smart and cunning but she does face a clear challenge. And I absolutely love this dynamic! It's intriguing and thought provoking unlike everything else from Star Wars I've seen thus far since Leia, maybe even Padme.
Imagine if we'd has this calibre in the sequel trilogy. Things would be radically different. The utter travesty that they had Mark Hammil, Cari Fisher, and Harrison Ford back for two movies and threw them away like lost toys they were done with, is truly cultural desecration of the worst kind.
You missjudge this in my opinion, it is more from where she came from, careerwise, that she is looked down upon.
She was a regular cop/detective before and she got the high posting at the ISB by merit instead of connections of her or her family.
As much as I want to say you’re wrong, I think you’re right. Even in Legends, the Empire was also quite sexist in addition to the xenophobia; Tarkin actually had a lover named Daala, but she was stationed at the Maw Installation presumably because the higher-ups did not see her fit to be in an actual fleet for being a woman. Of course in Canon you do have people like Vice Admiral Sloane who made it through the ranks, but like Thrawn she was not seen in the same light as other Admirals (there’s actually a point in either a comic or a novel in which Sloane threatens to amputate another officer because he treated like a plaything, if I remember correctly).
Dedra is honestly so fascinating. I hope Season 2 gives us more backstory for her.
It is not gender it is is that she is new people like you are making the problem worse by making people believe there is one
@@issaccody1161could you pls not be so damn dramatic? The main theme of the sequels was passing the torch to a new generation. Pretty much what happened in the originals concerning the prequels. By your logic, killing off yoda, obi wan and anakin was a travesty as well. Han, luke and leia's death were well handled since they were all in order to get back their main legacy and fix their biggest mistake: ben solo. You're mostly complaining for the idea behind the execution, not for the execution itself
This is how you write a strong female character.
Her smarts and competence are logical, has good instinct not due to "The Message" but actual hunch backed by evidence.
No one likes her and she has to convince and win through ability, she has challenges to overcome, and yeah the men around her are incompetent, but not buffoons.
*Indeed. She's doing the work through her own flare that I believe now, Partagaz trusts her enough to task her with more moving forward besides the Morlana One assignment. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she does next in episode 9 next week.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse I think you're right too about the Major.
It really adds another layer, she isnt some girl boss that does it all alone.
She made a lot of sense for someone on the ground, but when it comes to higher ups who simply look at return on investments, it seems filmsy and too vague, all that changed when another higher up who adds credence to what Dedra was saying
It's also clear that she's not fearless. Whenever she say things which may provoke her superiors she immediately backs off and when Partagaz supported her in this scene, she seemed visibly reliefed that the major had to save her
It's also how you write a morally complex character. The morality of the movies are so black and white. Empire=Evil. Alliance=Good. This is sooo much more compelling. I feel like I'm watching the inner workings of Nazi Germany in 1940. How did the average German adapt to Nazi rule? How did corporations change? The military? Government bureaucracy? How does any citizen continue to do what they do while fascism and authoritarianism grow? I watch all the comments about how Dedra is a "badass" etc, and I agree that she is a strong female, but I am looking forward to seeing the moral conflict as well.
This is how you write a strong -female- _character._ Any demographic (albeit human) fits as this ISB officer.
Not sure why anyone is compelled to denote her gender in this show. All the characters are well-written. Her gender plays no part in the narrative and yet is still part of the "message" and "agenda" of creating interesting and diverse characters.
God I love this show. The Empire done right! Strong female(s) done right! The rebellion done right! Smart capable characters making smart decisions. This truly is Star Wars for grown ups
A thousand times this
Solid prep work and concise presentation. The main challenge is insecure upper management who view competence as a threat.
*There are indeed some that only want robot workers to do their job without questioning anything, while there are others(like Partagaz) who welcomes ideas & civil debates amongst his subordinates that brings real results that benefit the Empire. So yeah, it just depends on the manager who's working the shift that's either just their for the check or their to make sure that the workers are taken care of while the job is getting done to the best of their ability.*
They took an emergency staff meeting and made it better and more engaging than most of the supposed SW content aka toxic creative sludge, we’ve been getting for over a decade. That is how well made and strong this show is…
This scene from the corporate and federal security world was portrayed perfectly. I’ve been in the many meetings were the young analyst or agent was gung ho, and blasting through a report about how important it was, and their supervisor stepping in to bring it back to the correct interaction, it needs to be while the Director in this case, yularn sits and pretends indifference to test the validity of the plan
*Yes indeed!!!! This is what the Empire is about behind the scenes & we need more of these scenes moving forward. I can't wait for episode 9 tomorrow.*
I never thought Star Wars would mirror corporate America, but it not only did it. It did it well
@@michaelcofer3660 then you should watch interview of lukas and Cameron where Lukas says that star wats is about vietnam war. americans are empire and vietcongs are rebels
Finally a show that takes the Empire seriously! Making the stormtroopers baffoons and the Empire too incompetent was the birth defect so to say of the original trilogy. The essential mistake that dragged the whole franchise down and haunts it to this day.
Love to know the percentage of people in this room who are going to be on the Death Star when it blows up
Currently it's only one individual in that room - Yularen.
I kinda love the way that Dedra doesn’t hold back regardless of who she’s talking to. Yularen is several ranks above her but she chats back a bit about the cost of the requisitions vs stolen equipment.
Could cost her in the future, as it’s a risky strategy for someone in her position.
That said, she was being extremely careful when talking to the Colonel.
@@JaysonHodges27154Plus it helped that Major Partagaz was there to back her up.
@@rippingtons60 And even Partagaz feared Yularen.
Unlike the sequel trilogy, the casting, acting, writing, directing, production are all incomparably superior.
The way he says "code droid.."
Too bad she didnt get to him in time before Rogue One happens.
She is awesome!
It would have been cool if one of them asked Yularen what was it like working with Anakin and the Jedi.
I really enjoyed watching Dedra on RUclips I want to see more of her and Rae Sloane they both are so good in their acting.
And throughout this entire debacle, _they already had Cassian in one of their own prisons._ Goes to show just how little they think of their prisoners. They toss them in some hole and completely forget about them. They had a facial scan and everything! Not only that, but they're also _overestimating_ Cassian's current significance to the Rebellion. They think he's a top-tier agent, but the reality is that he doesn't know jack and shit. He was hired for one job, he did it, and he got out.
Also, it's super fitting how the two big-shot intelligence leaders of the nascent Rebellion go by the names of Axis and Fulcrum. They're not directly connected, but their impacts on coordination and leveraging resources against the Empire are equally important. Later on, Cassian actually becomes a Fulcrum himself.
Well in all fairness to the Empire they believed Cassian was simply a thief and murderer- which he was after all. But its his connection to Axis that makes him valuable.
The ISB is so badass
Where's Blevin? How could be excused from a meeting like this? Is he being reprimanded for his failure and cover up on Ferrix?
*Good question. Partagaz couldn't have told her to "Watch your back" for no reason if there's not someone like Blevin or someone else who may come after Dedra at some point with the way she took over the Morlana One sector. Hopefully we'll see Blevin again soon.*
He's taken a long walk out of a short airlock? 😆
Not everyone is able to attend every meeting lol
The irony being that waving around giant amounts of resources is exactly in line with the tarkin doctrine, like showing off a giant super weapon for the sake of fear... lol
0:23 im listening the her face is kindve funny her face the way she stays serious
My ranking of "best imperials" of all time!:
1. Dedra
2. Tarkin
3. Vader
4. Palpatine
5. Sidious
Darth Sidious is Palpatine.
@@sabataskull9661 No way, good old palps could never be a sith lord.
Vader and Sidious are questionable ‘imperials’. They are more concerned about their sith religion than the actual empire. The true imperials are officers such as grand admiral Thrawn or general Veers.
Code Droid, not Kill Droid.
Previous episode: "No one in this room should have difficulty accessing Army or Navy resources going forward..."
This episode: You want Army AND Navy resources?!?!?!
Hmmmm..."Axis"; and in Rebels there's a "Fulcrum"; those Imps sure love their code names
(Not quite as cool as the Freespace 2 'codenames' for weapons and radar systems but still...)
*This is true. The Empire for sure does enjoy giving someone a code name. I wonder what name they'd give me?* 🤔😂
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse I heard years ago that there was a 'formula' to making your own star wars character name==something about combining part of the city and street you live at and part of your namw...
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse It's just tradecraft and opsec. Codenames are useful for maintaining secrecy should your communications be intercepted or data stolen.
What I love about this series is that it employs these standards of spycraft and intelligence services. And given Luthen's skills and methodology, I would wager he was a trained field agent from an intelligence service. I wouldn't be surprised if his co-conspirator Kleya is former Republic Military Intelligence, under General Draven's employ, and Luthen's handler.
@@AngeloBarovierSD For sure; but the use of code names for operatives and weapons systems is cool...
Then again, Nothing has quote compared to 'Crypt Hammer', for the coolness factor.
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse Raven. 😎
The EMpire needs to drill me
this whole process explains to us why domestic policy is no different than foreign policy. There is LITERALLY NO DIFFERNCE other than a line drawn on a map. the depth of this is CONSTANTLY lost upon the average joe.
Star Wars Gestapo
this show made me like Empire even more: competent, loyal to their cause, a solid threat. would watch these meetings than any woke bs Disney shats out nowadays. Andor was written story & dialogue first, not some lesbian director ranting her personal views.
Sigh. Pretty good. Intelligently written. Totally obliterates those stupid and laughable films TFA, TLJ, TROS, OBI WAN, WILLOW, SOLO, etc. Too bad that the audiences are tired of identity politics and girl power.
You improved the show. But the audience has already jumped ship! And the horrible loss of over $600,000,000. with the Indy 5 flop didn't help.
What? No way. Deedra is an excellently written character and underdog. She is one of Star Wars' better female characters. Is any woman in a place of power make you made? Should they all be no-name characters or mistresses or freaking Padme...
@@JNB0723 Let's face it. The CRITICAL DRINKER describes ANDOR the best. As he put it: "It's like the restaurant on the Titanic decided to revamp the menu, now that the ship is sinking. The damage is already done. The fans this would have appealed to have jumped ship. So I guess in the end, you get what you deserve." 🤔
@@eternalhalloween1 I don't see how any of that's relevant to my comment. I mean you're entitled to your own opinion, but if you're really going to use the idea of identity politics yeah, you better actually back it up. Cuz what it sounds like did you just hate women who are in powerful roles.
I swear people like you are why I can no longer enjoy media criticism. Any issue you have with it always gets reduced down to skin color and sex being the primarily negative.
