My bf thinks I'm crazy because I like to clean/organize/work in the middle of the night instead of during the day. There's just something so great about feeling productive while almost everyone else in the country is asleep.

Usually I love declutter videos, but this is probably the first time that watching one gave anxiety instead of satisfaction lol I can not believe you actually decluttered, the final result made me want to declutter again haha I would recommend you to just have a certain amount of hangers, so if you want to get more stuff, you need to get some old stuff out before, so you can keep the order. Good luck.

My suggestion is when you go through everything again-do it by section instead of taking everything out again. And try everything on. Be critical. If it’s tight, if it’s to big, if it’s got a tear or if it’s just not comfy-get rid of it. Trying it on will help! Still looks a lot better.

Your before shots look much like my closet.
So do not know how after 9+ hours to organize you can say you want room to buy more/new stuff. I mean, love clothes and all, but feels like an anchor when you just want to swim.
Maybe taking a year or two off from NEW clothes, the money saved from those purchases could afford some wonderful new non clothing item or a great vacation or two.

My feedback for you is 1 you are very pretty! And you did a good job.
2 you said something about how hard you work and that ev once in a while you deserve to splurge. My take on that is...its your money. And yes you should feel free to set back a fund for spending on nice things for youself. But your mindless shopping adventures have resulted in a really chaotic situation. You will have more peace in your daily life if you keep decluttering. And peace is what i think we all really deserve...a frivolous afternoon spending hard earned money on more of what you already have is really no way to reward yourself. Is it?
3 if you want to attempt another wave of clearing out (up to you) start with a dedicated color palette of 2 neutrals and 4-5 other colors and then keep only those things that can be worn with at least 5 other pieces (not including jeans and black items).
Keep going! You have the skills and if you can get to a manageable amount of belongings in your wardrobe your daily life will truly change. It saves money, time and mental energy. Go go go!

I agree. My closet was like this from being between sizes. I got tired of lugging it around from each move. Then I lost 55 and have more to go. I had a lot of classic work wear that resale shops didn’t even want! that told me I had it long enough for it to go out of style, according to them at least. I really started working on narrowing down a few pieces in each category. I think with this what I would do, is not have as many sweatpants and sweat tops to last for two weeks maybe go with three or four items because you can always wash them. I don’t know what part of the country you live in, and what your seasons are, but maybe some of these things could be put away for fall and winter and brought out again? Good job getting rid of a lot though. I wouldn’t want to buy any more items either-quality over quantity.

Yeah, I totally agree. The way I did it was to realize what colors looked amazing on me (not a ton), which ones looked okay (quite a few), and which colors/patterns looked horrible. Ditch the ones that look horrible and some of the ones that are only okay, and that you never wear.

Dear Madison, there is no need for you to feel that you have to defend yourself when other people make random negative comments about your life choices! You're very young and beautiful, you are allowed to make mistakes and I promise that you are already a person who is willing to grow and improve as a human. Keep it up, take notes, but don't respond to haters! You are doing an excellent job, I enjoyed watching your video and admire your progress! One garment at a time. It's impossible to become a minimalist in one night, and you did your best to declutter you closet. There are plenty of people with even more clothes than you have! So don't beat yourself up on it. Just try to avoid shopping altogether. You can educate yourself on consequences of fast fashion, it actually has helped me to value the things that I already own. Please stay safe and keep your family happy and healthy! 🤗

I've found that once I do a big declutter (in any category) it makes it easier and easier for me to do more. E.g. I'll keep a few pieces of clothing in mind that I'm not ready to get rid of but am unsure if I'll wear. Then a few months later if I didn't wear them once, it's a sign that yes, they can go.
Eventually, if you keep going through things over time, you'll hit a point where you truly love and/or use the items you own. :)
    Great job!

Up until 5 years ago, I kept EVERYTHING from high school and beyond because it was stuff I worked my butt for. I learned to let go of things because I eventually realized there was NO WAY I was gonna wear it all. So many of the things I havent worn on a year I got rid of and once a month for 6 months I went through and made another trash bag full. I now have literally like a foot of clothes hanging in my closet 😂 and two drawers dedicated to leggings, joggers and comfy shorts (I'm a mom now. Comfy clothes are life). But its helped my anxiety to not have all the clutter I used to. I'm now donate happy lol

  • @nufflemuffin
    @nufflemuffin 4 года назад +8

I think you did good for round one, the more you declutter the easier it may be to declutter and you may be more harsh you with your decisions.
Something that makes decluttering clothes easier for me is flipping the hangers, so the open part faces you for all your hangers. When you wear that piece you flip it so the open part faces away from you and after 6 months to a year, whatever hangers still face you, that's what you donate/sell. Unless its clothing you wear for special occasions, like a wedding or something.
Something else I do as a mindful shopper is buy something I either need or really want and when I buy one thing I get rid of 2 things from my closet.

You could take pictures of some of these clothes and declutter afterwards. That way you'll still have the stories and less clutter. I've been doing that and it works great. Gave away tons of clothes and now only own what I actually wear.

If you ever decide to do this again try taking it in smaller chunks like go through only t- shirts, or only dresses. That way you can pull out the whole category without too much stress and pressure. It's not for everyone, but I quite like the Kon Marie method of "sparks joy" for helping to decide whether to keep something or not. It aids in having a wardrobe of clothes you love wearing as opposed to items you may wear again someday. Good luck!

I used to have loads of clothes i could not get rid of , but two and a half years down the line i have halved my entire wardrobe and shoes (marie kondo life changer !!!! ) . i now go through my wardrobe every 4-6 months to sort out seasonal clothes and if i've not worn something for ages and in good condition i will put it on ebay . If i want to buy something new i either take something out of my wardrobe unless i am replacing something i have worn out . Also i made my hanging wardrobe space / draws storage smaller so helps keeps clothes to a minimal ( i live in the uk we don't have closets )

You did great your first time around. An encouragement is next time put like things in a pile to see what you have and even just put some things you might not wear in a box for 1-3 months and if you dont go for it then donate.
It will get easier but you have to do what is right for you. Dont allow the process to overwhelm you and instead of buying new items of clothes try to splurge on an experience or even passing what you would have spent on someone else. The second has always made me feel better t by at someone has what they couldn't previously get/need and it helps to connect and interact with those you dont know. Hope this helps you moving forward 🙂

Such a great video! I think I had even more stuff than you at the beginning of the video. Don't worry about people saying you have too much, it's a process and you've done an incredible job. I went through several rounds and am now down to a closet full of things I truly love. One thing that's helped is when you have several similar items (like flannels) you'll often just wear your faves, dump the rest- you won't miss them. Other evaluation strategies: would I want to bump into my ex in this? Do I know how to style it and wear it? Do I prefer to have this item, or the money it could sell for?

A helpful tip for if you want to use it would be to flip all your hangers to hang the other way and then when you use it return the hanger the right way that way you see what you actually wear and use. I did it and it helped me realize I wore almost nothing that was hung up in my closet and I just gave it away. Loved this video by the way you definitely looked like you needed that declutter.

My next step is to declutter as everything is squashed in to the wardrobe and the drawers. I have so much stuff and I am slowly but surely taking over the spare room. I assuming ur a clothing hoarder so if that's the case ur donate pile is something to be proud of. Its hard for people to get rid of clothes sometimes even clothes they haven't wore in years gets put back in the closet with the "oh imma wear that more often" mentality and it stays in the closet un wore for another few years lol. I used to be that bad but finally narrowing my clothes down has been so rewarding. It feels so good not having all those clothes. I've practically became a minimalist and i never thought id ever be one of those. Small steps leads to great accomplishments!

  • @bonesbigfoot2654
    @bonesbigfoot2654 3 года назад

I found this video in my suggestions. I realize this was done in June so I imagine you've done another declutter since? This was a nice start though I've honestly never ever seen someone who's owned so many clothes before and who's also had such a very small donate/sell pile. First rule of thumb....don't bring in anymore clothes. Two, get rid of anything you haven't wore/doesn't fit/look good/stained/torn/missing buttons/or makes you feel good when wearing the item. Third, force yourself to keep everything off the floor/know that just because you have a big closet doesn't mean you need to fill it/and if you haven't already hang all of your hangers the opposite way. When you wash your clothes, hang them up the normal way as this will force you to see clothes you aren't wearing and therefore can get rid of in x amount of time (no more than a year). For clothes that you have folded up...when you wash them and fold them back up, put the clean clothes to the bottom of the stack. This forces you to wear your other clothes that you thought you just needed to keep. To help maintain....keep clothes off the floor, DON'T buy or receive anymore clothes, have a bag or box to sell or donate and allow yourself x amount of time to accomplish this....say 1 to 2 weeks top. If they haven't sold, out the door they go to donate. I know how hard this may be but it does get easier the more times you do it. Can I make another suggestion? You are very young and I realize you work hard for your money and want to treat yourself. How about treating yourself to using that money to save for retirement. Invest it and you will not regret it!!!! I know......it's very hard to think about at such a young age but honestly you will be happy down the road. Trust me. You've got this!

Here are a few tips for you 1. Don't worry if you don't get rid of as much as you wanted to this time you can always get rid of more 2. If you hang the clothes with the hangers facing one way when you wear that item turn the hanger around facing the other way that way you know what you have worn 3. With your folded clothes put a basket that you don't use for dirty stuff in your closet and if you have worn that item put it in the basket instead of putting it back on the shelves 4. Wait at least 6 months then go back through the stuff you'll know you've worn the items that you have turned the hangers and put in the basket do the same thing with your under stuff make a basket that isn't for dirty stuff and put them in it and after the 6 months you'll be surprised how much you actually wear if it's summer do it with just summer clothes and after summer ends go through the clothes and you'll see you'll get rid of more than you think 5. If you don't wear it and it's sentimental to you like a wedding dress or baby's first shoes or your first date outfit or first family outing stuff like that that means a lot to you and you definitely can't get rid of it put it in a keep sakes box up in your closet so it's not mixed in with your everyday stuff but you still have them I'm just trying to help and I can tell you if you take some of what I said and do it to other places in your place you'll see you don't need everything you actually have I hope this helps you out some and your closet looks a lot better good job and you should get some rest now 😁👍

I love the video!!!!!!!!Try hanging all the hangers the wrong way around. In 3 months all the hangers that are still the wrong way, are clothes you have not worn and can probably sale ( except seasonal clothes).

I hate that most of these comments are telling you to do it again. Decluttering is all about what you personally feel like you need. I think you did amazing and would only say for you to do it again if you feel like you need too. Everyone has a different decluttering method and decluttering does not mean becoming a minimalist.

Get another bookshelf for the other end and then the space left beside it get the 3-4 cube storage and slide in there anyway you can get more storage and keep organized is key, add some cute baskets on the shelf for more storage! Under the hanging clothes you could also add more storage cubes for even more storage definitely optimizing the space to the full extent!!!

Get a set of drawers! You could get one that’s short and long so it fits under the hanging clothes. You can fit a lot of tshirts and leggings in there and put your handbags or taller shoes on top of it. If you can store some of your clothes away in the drawers you’ll reduce what you see when you first walk in and maybe won’t feel so overwhelmed. It’s ok to keep all your clothes as long as you truly like them. I think getting some cute bins for the top is a great idea!

    Congrats on your 5 bags!!
I bet your attachment to clothes comes from having to work so hard to have them. Maybe you have a scarcity mentality?
Have you heard of the hanger trick? Turn all of your hangers backwards and put them the right way after you wear the item. You can also keep track of your folded clothes by putting freshly washed ones on the top of the pile. The ones on the bottom haven't been worn. 🙂

I had a closet hanging device like that. I rearranged it wrong once and the whole thing fell off the wall! Lol. Can't speak much to the construction of parts of my house though to be honest. We put a hanging bar on back wall the width of the closet, bought shelves that supports 1000 pounds (no attic so things i store can be heavy) and folded things that really don't need hanging. Stuff like pants, shirts, underwear in baskets, sweaters. Now all my hubby and my clothes are in the closet. No dressers anymore woohoo
Something i do when i want a particular thing is put it in an online cart like Walmart and amazon. I don't purchase it but just leave it there and come back after a month or 2 reevaluate how much i really want or need the item. Consider other items you have that would work for your needs without making purchases.

Me (and probably her too): spends LOTS OF TIME sorting and organizing closet. Later uses only the things in the front and each piece of clothing, after use, just throws back into the closet, so it becomes messy again. Later, after a few years, still finds the "organized" clothes at the back of my closet, because I've not worn them after the organizing.

A game for you.. Get rid of anything that's on a mismatched hanger. And if you really wanna keep it, hunt your closet to replace it with a less favorite piece. This way you'll at least have no mismatched hangers & that much less stuff.

You did a great start man! I feel like I would have the same problem - I have a very hard time tossing stuff away because I have different memories attached to every piece. .__.
BUT still a tip: I saw you having many similar items, like the 5-6 grey sweaters. Do you really need these, or wouldn't 1-2 grey sweaters be enough? Maybe you can once again make categories for everything and when it's too many similar items in one category, sort them out again. Like keep the best quality grey sweater, or the one you love most/feel best in. This always helps me a lot. :)

Concerning your issue with not getting rid of much, I noticed you started with the Konmari method but apparently the "joy" question doesn't click for you....
As a tip for future declutter projects you could change the question to
*_Am I fully content wearing this?_*
    or
    *_Would I purchase this again?_*

Your closet looks so much more organised now :) :) Still you have so many clothes maybe you could do what I do and have a separation pile in another room and if you don't go in there to grab it in the current season of when its seasonal then donate it, that way its still there if you need it but if you don't then you can get rid of it. I have that system set up and it works really well for me, I am down to under 150 items of clothing. I remember the first time I did a massive clean out and it definately feels like I had a lot of stuff as I think I had about 7 or 8 bags to donate, now I usually do one to two bags every few months. You'll get there eventually. Just don't be in a rush to buy things to replace just yet as you do have a lot of clothing so maybe see what you actually wear and maybe put that money aside so if you do need to buy something you have the money ready :) :)

Also, what helps me with decluttering is asking myself things like "oke this is a party dress, but would I wear it at the next party and feel good in it?" If the answer is no, then it has to go.
