This is the best video I have seen on how to divide peonies. I have 50 year old peonies in heavy clay and would almost need a back hoe to dig any of them.
Same situation I’m thinking a pickaxe and start way farther out & go in from the sides slowly its also 2 sides of concrete so i gotta go in from one side i cant lose these babys
Probably not; Peonies prefer a very cold Northern climate . In warmer parts of the 🇺🇸 & 🇨🇦 Canada; they don’t grow or bloom too well !!! The cold helps them establish a much stronger root system & bloom.
After you dig and divide, how long before before you have to replant. I plan on sharing some of the new crowns and it may be several days before they get planted again.
The stem of my itoh peony ( Yellow Crown Itoh ) has greatly shrunk in size by 50% this spring . Unfortunately, it has not bloomed. It is about 5 years old. Not sure what I can do about it .
Do you have to divide them? I want a nice huge bush like they usually are . Can i put in a huge pot and then transplant then after a year or so? Almost 50 yrs heavy clay soil n rocks outside by my sidewalk so its 2 sides concrete I’m not sure if I should go in along the concrete one side is about 8 inches away the other side maybe 10-12
RE: Question on Digging, Dividing & Moving Peonies Video I don't really know the best solutions to her problem. I have consulted with a local grower of peonies who feels the same as I do and that is.... She does NOT need to divide. She can move and hold in large pots but only if she can find a place to bury the pot outside (pot MUST have drainage). The digging will depend on the area that gives her the most access to the roots. I recommend that she could also send her questions the the Canadian Peony Society web page where her question will be directed to other growers who might have experience in doing this. Fall is the ideal time to split peonies as it allows the dormant, divided plants time to settle in. Dividing in the spring will stress the plant as it is just beginning to put out new growth. The plant may not flower, or worse, if split in the spring.
The left behind root pieces of lactiflora peonies can develop crown/eye tissue & form a new plant. This takes a couple of years to occur & is another method of propagation. Look up adventitious roots for more info.
Well seasoned gardeners share valuable expertise about dividing peonies….!! Thanks
One of the best videos showing this and the reality of what one may find. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!

So tickled you name your plants too! But as I have gotten older and pretty ill, they are mostly all named “Bob” now.
: )
Great job you two. Very informative. We just need to know where you get those wonderful garden boots.
Thanks for the great demo and sharing best practices.
Excellent show, ladies.
Thank you 😊
I think it’s not necessary to remove soooo much soil From the roots!
It does seem that if not as much soil was removed, there would be less chance of air pockets in and around the roots when replanting.
thankyou very much
Very helpful..thanks
I’m guessing the best time to digup is fall
This is very interesting.
I love to plant peonies.
But i don't know if it can survive and stand the hot weather in Philippines

Can you divide peonies in the spring as well? Or only in the fall?
Fall is the ideal time to split peonies as it allows the dormant, divided plants time to settle in.
Dividing in the spring will stress the plant as it is just beginning to put out new growth.
The plant may not flower, or worse, if split in the spring.
will the root left in the original site regrow?
If there are “eyes” left on the root that is replanted then new growth will emerge in the spring.
The left behind root pieces of lactiflora peonies can develop crown/eye tissue & form a new plant. This takes a couple of years to occur & is another method of propagation. Look up adventitious roots for more info.
CAN U TRANSPLANT PEONIES IN SPRING? DIG UP AND DEVIDE THEM TO MOVE THEM OR ONLY IN SPRING TO TRANSPLANT?
Thanks for the question. Early fall is the best time to dig up, divide, move and/or transplant an established peony in the garden.
