Thank you SO much for this latest K3 video Ed. I've not been at all happy with the clarity of my shots and have changed my settings so much I've lost track. My camera was set to AFC. I changed to AFS as you recommended. Also, I followed your advice and reset my ISO setting to 'custom'. You also alerted me that I did not have the latest firmware update so need to do that as I have had several instances with the mirror lock up malfunction (although not lately). I took your advice and bought the Tameron 70-200 2.8 last June and love the images I get out of the beast. I commonly shoot with the Pentax 18-135 DA 5.6 because it's weather sealed and I live at the beach. It's not the most impressive lens but it's flexible. The K-3 was a great choice for me. It's been a tool to learn with and a great companion on my daily beach walks. I very much appreciate all of the time and effort you put into these videos Ed.
These videos helped my choice of camera. I looked at the whole mirrorless thing but went with Pentax. No regrets to this day. I love the solid build, ovf and colours you get. Thanks for helping me dial in the camera settings better. Love Pentax gear. Great insights.
Thanks for the info, I have had mine for a few years now, but have not gone too deep in the many choices in the menus. The noise reduction tip you gave I was not aware of, but I am setting mine to see the difference, because I had a soft image once in a while without knowing why. Thanks again, I think this is a very capable camera, and it was great that you shared your tweaks to make it better.....
Am sorry, am unable to understand that AFA AFS stuff (am completely new to photography) you had explained. Also unable to find the steps to get that setting screen fpr AFA and AFS. Please help. Thank you.
Hello, Ed! Glad to see you being once more interested in Pentax. I personally never lost interest, although I did get a Nikon 1 V1 when it was heavily discounted and enjoy using it as my compact camera. I would love to see you make a video about the JPEG settings you use on your K-3. The Pentax JPEG engine is IMHO so customizable that it (almost) negates the need to shoot RAW. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the review and info Ed. I have a K3 and Limited primes and really enjoy the camera. I used to have a K5 and it took a few months to get comfortable with the K3. I shoot with the AA filter simulations off - I haven't needed them yet - although most of my images are landscapes and nature, so usually no issues there.
Hi. Great videos. Thanks for all the info. I have a question, would be great if you tell me your opinion! I want to upgrade from a K-x to a first "professional" camera. And I was thinking to buy either a K3 or a K3ii. I am just concerned about the price vs new improvements of the K3ii. What would you suggest me? Thank you so much!
Now there is 1.41 firmware for K3 available supporting the last DFA*85/1.4. A lot of bugs and issues were fixed since that camera was introduced. Funny thing is that there were no more updates for K3II since 2016.. probably too few were sold that Ricoh does not care about it any more :D :D
More Pentax videos please! I shoot RAW DNG on the K3 and I set the iso NR to OFF because I like to reduce noise in Camera Raw. Awesome camera, especially when paired with the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM :D ....crazy combo....
Hi thanks for the video... One question: Those adjustments they can be made only on Users mode I guess??? Because in green mode the camera doesn't let me change for example the ISO parameters. Telling me these actions can not be done. Thank you
Thanks for your Video, Very useful! Question, in your video, at about 10you wrote that you set "Fine" Sharpening for JPEGs... what do you mean exactly? There is no menu items for that??? Also the trick to hold the ISO button and press the green button to get auto ISO, only works in Program mode isn't ?
Thanks for the K-3 tutorial. I just purchased mine new with USA warranty from popflash.photo for $655. I leave NR off and shoot RAW DNG. I use iPhoto for processing and don't see any detriment at all with NR off so that's the way I'm going to leave it.
Hey @photouniverse could you tell me if your custom settings in the high-ISO option would remain the same if you would have an older m42 lens mounted???
I'm upgrading from K-30... I shoot primarily wildlife/ birding. Would you suggest K-3 or K-5iis? K-3 with grip is back down to $749! I just can't decide between the two... Can you suggest one over the other photouniverse ?! Cheers!
+L Miller I dont know if you got your answer, but I would strongly recommend the K-3 over K-5IIs as the AF is MUCH better, especially AF.C for BIF! (I have a K-5 and a K-3).
I'm going to receive a fabulous gift of a Pentax K-3 Camera later today. This morning I received a link to the above video you made, and I want to thank you for making it. I watched it and will watch it again when I open my new camera. I have some questions, and I know some of your viewers might laugh, but you don't seem like you would, so here goes... I hate to admit it, but even after posting over 25,000 of my .jpg (jpeg) photos to Flickr, over a 10 year period, and thousands of them having been by dial-up, I don't know or understand what RAW is. Is it a file extension, or an uncompressed version of the picture I am taking, or what? If it is uncompressed, would my computer and/or SD cards fill up too quickly with the huge files?
The first four minutes, and the last two minutes, were absolutely useless. REALLY don't care if you like overnight shipping etc. The parts in the middle about the settings were very informative and useful. Thanks.
I really like your videos being of practical nature (like this particular one here) or being more theoretical opinions. Among the Pentax related videos yours are truly objective and informative. In the current video there's one funny thing though. I don't understant the fuss you make about changing the strap on your camera. I use original straps all the time (with only minor exceptions). I don't see the need to change the original strap to something else, the original strap sits very well on the shoulder or neck, since it has real leather sewed on to the whole lenght of the inside. Besides those O-rings (including the protector pads) from your Domke strap of choice are incredibly ugly! The original straps are very thin (or as thin as your replacement) on the camera side, so I don't see the point there either. What's the point in a carabin on a strap anyway? It might get open by accident and camera may fall. Last but not least any metal parts on the camera strap are not only completely unnecessary but can also damage the camera or the lens while in the bag. That pretty much summarizes my take on camera straps!
I really can't take any adult seriously who uptalks like a 13-year old girl. Take some voice lessons and learn to stop making every statement sound like a question.

Thanks for a great video. I have just purchased the K3-II (upgraded from the K100d, so a pretty substantial step-up) and found this really useful.

In raw it does not matter what NR setting you have.. it only is applied into JPG. Same for lens corrections.
Hey, thank you man. I had NO idea about the auto setting for ISO issue.

Love my K-3. Thanks for this video. Helps a lot. What about AA Filter setting? 1 or 2 or off?
+JedlyMT Put it Off, unless you have to photograph a tight pattern, such as on Tissues, etc...
Wow! where did you get it. It's really a good price! Im about to buy it but its 899.
Why does it say RICOH on the monitor display?
greatly helpful video mate.. good job...
I second that!
Hey Ed, is the 32mm 1.4 lens a typo? I've searched for this lens and couldn't find it can you please confirm?
DA 21mm 3.2.
Oh... Wishful thinking no problem then. Keep up the good work, tks!
hey where i can buy this body with a lense under $800 ?please tell me
Thanks my k3 will arrive soon.
Color mode should always be set to the sRGB which gives better color tone! Reds and violets are more muted in Adobe RGB.
do these setting stay in all modes once they are set

got my K-3 for $730 total - no lens ( I have lenses ) - GREAT CAMERA
In Canada, body alone $1,100.00
sRGB.
Why?
It is universally acknowledged as the better setting.
Really? I've read from numerous sources that sRGB is best for the web (to avoid washed out looking color) and Adobe RGB for better prints.

Asshole
he's not up-talkng at all...
Keep your nasty negative comments to yourself. He's trying to help us you moron
You are more interested in promoting your ego than the camara - boring.
