Her VERY FIRST PERFORMANCE at the GRAMMYS was NOTHING REALLY MATTERS... and RIGHT AFTER she won the GRAMMY for BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM 🎉❤
The people in this video are performing a Japanese dance called "Butoh". The butoh dancers tell stories through their faces and hand movements, doing very expressive gestures and movements. It's a very beautiful dance, very slow, except that in this video they're moving in high speed. And Madonna's facial expressions resemble butoh dance too.
The connection you made with Drowned World/Substitute for Love is actually very relevant. Madonna explained in an interview that in the world of geisha, there's a concept called "the drowned world" which is the world in which geisha work. Geisha are performers, they are trained to entertain, to be the perfect companion to the business men at the tea houses. They study a lot so they can have interesting conversations about anything, from economics to architecture, from food to history, they're trained to always say the right thing. They are also trained as performers, so they can play instruments and dance. But all that, it's just a character they play, it's all an illusion they create for these men. But it's not who they really are. So that's the "drowned world", the world of illusion in which geisha and the men who hire them engage. The men too know it's all an illusion, but that's the game they play. So in the song "Drowned World" Madonna is talking about that world of illusion from the world of geisha as an analogy of fame in the western world. Now, in this video she returns to the Japanese theme, and it' actually inspired by the book "Memoirs of a Geisha". The song is about her daughter (symbolized in the bag of water, because water is a healing element) and how becoming a mother changed her life ("something is ending and something begins"). And it's about how her daughter saved her from that drowned world in which she was living (as we saw in the Drowned World video). When she says "you're shelter from the storm, give me comfort in your arms", she means the storm of life, the noise of superficial things that distract us from what really matters, which is love.

Madonna had a great explanation of what this song meant to her, but it does tie in to her rebirth as a new mother, and finding spirituality in Kabbalah at the time. In this video,this exact look, was used for a cover and photo spread in Harpers Bazaar magazine, and it was absolutely stunning, if you get a chance to look it up.😊

This was probably along with Ray Of Light the most happy upbeat song on the album, deservedly became the fifth single and a fan favourite, performed at the Grammys 1999 just before she won 4 times that night for the masterpiece that is her Ray Of Light album.

This is a fascinating video. One of my favorites. Actually, this was the latest Madonna video when I became a huge fan of her back in 1999 🤭. Her artistry and visuals are so amazing. Madonna is a chamaleon. And yes, the very beautiful lyrics are about her daughter Lola and how motherhood changed her mind completely. Very in the same vein of "Drowned World".

Oh, my goodness! Where do I start? Well, Madge was inspired by ‘Memories of a Geisha’ for this video. But the video is trippier. My favourite interpretation is: the characters in white are each a memory, or a ‘neuron’. Red Madonna is ‘younger’ and black is ‘wiser’. That’s how I make peace with making sense of this video. I remember thinking she should have released Sky Fits Heaven as the final single from ROL instead but this song has grown on me over the years. Of course the video is so different from anything else. The quick camera movements add a special touch. That quick side shift of the background in the single shots of Madonna are genius.
I also think "Sky Fits Heaven" had much more commercial appeal and would have been a much more memorable hit, but "Nothing Really Matters" is a great song too. I so love its lyrics

She was heavily inspired by the book
"Memoirs of A Geisha", she incorporated elements of the book in a surreal, Kabuki and Butoh style visual aesthetics and dance choreography.
It's meant to look and be odd, and intriguing.
Technically you have one last video of her Ray of Light music to react to should you choose. For her Drowned World Tour (2001), she filmed a video for the song Mer Girl which is the final track on Ray of Light.
The video was filmed 3 years after Ray of Light, it's still very much connected to the album despite the forward time gap.

Nothing really matters is the last single sold in store, but "skin" was the 6th single .... it was ready but arrive bo of the movie austin power.... so "skin" was just a promotional single.... It's not just motherhood but also Kabbalah. She changed a great deal spiritually. It was again beautiful to watch. This album represented a true rebirth of Madonna, not just changing her looks.

Super sweet video as always. I am revisiting this album either this period and I have to say that I forgot how good it was. I think you should listen all the other tracks because there are some very beautiful ones. Madonna with William orbit have done a masterful job with Rey of light which was very ahead of its time. As much as I'm sure you'd love to have listened through the entire discography before the concert, this is actually a really perfect stopping point. I hope you both have a blast (I know you will). Are you planning to do a review/thoughts on the concert? Would love to hear your highlights and experience.
If I can offer a little advice; I'm sure you've heard Madonna goes on "late." In reality, showtime starts at 8.30pm which is typically when the DJ starts. DJ will play for around an hour, then they'll get the stage cleaned and ready for Madonna. Once the DJ stops playing, that's your chance to use the restroom, grab a beverage etc. They could start within 20 minutes, or up to an hour depending on what's happening backstage. Also, to protect her voice, Madonna famously does not allow Air Conditioning to be turned on. It can get VERY warm, so dress lightly, and maybe have heavier layers for when you are walking to/from your transportation.

What you are discovering and feeling these last few months with Madonna videos/music I felt in 2003. I was 17 (gay) and MTV Europe had a TV show that played videos from a particular artist, told a synopsis of the video, interview on set & told viewers information as the videos played. The TV show was on for 30 mins. Most singers only got one show. Madonna got 5 because her career was so extensive. Each show played and talked about her videos in chronological order like your guys are doing. The show aired at 14.30 in the day. So I would have to ditch school just to watch these shows. I was compelled by her artistry as a whole.
