I was thinking the pilings he helped remove was old growth redwood but you said they were Douglas fur. The wood they removed was well preserved because it was redwood and the lake didn't hurt it. • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  5 лет назад

      YES!! Mostly for the wrong reason though. When they replaced the wools trestle with a causeway it messed up the salt levels. Fresh water comes in from the south and the huge area north of the causeway is getting more salty and pink bacteria grows in it. So from space you see a straight line through the lake bright pink on one side, dark green on the other.

The east end is in a swamp. Been there but cant see anything like the causeway. Ducks. Pelicans. Geese. No bridge. The west end is a salt flat. You can drive right up to the tracks but can't see much as you cant get up high. Been there too screwing around. BUT the middle. The bottom is mud about 100 feet deep in most places. In other places its solid sodium. Can't cut it with a saw. They used super heated steam to drive piles in those areas. But in most places it goo. Its like stinky grey grease. The crews called it a bottomless pit. They would dump a whole trainload of huge rocks into the lake and come back the next day and its all gone. Sunk out of sight. And its still sinking in places.

    FWIW column U think I read somewhere that UP had been thinking about dropping the Lucin Cutoff as it's more expensive to maintain then the ex WP line around the south side of the lake. Both lines are built on top of mud.
    Think of what I-80 looks like over on the west side of the salt flats. It's not very good ground to build a railway on as it constantly sinks with the pounding of trains.
    Additionally the issue had been raised by other parties about the degradation of water quality on the lake by the causeway.
