Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Fleetwood & First GigsDan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister!
Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
New York, London & BelfastAfter meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his RUclips channel now has over 8000 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family

Got my Tivon Pennicott mouthpiece five days ago, plays great . Did not go for the Yellow colour, got a white one, I have to say that i am very pleased with my choice. Had a damaged one delivered at first, but Syos replaced it, without a problem. 🙂😊

Although i like the mouthpiece i have A Tivon Penicott Tenor mouthpiece. I have found the mouthpiece to be porous, i soaked the mouthpiece for hygiene purposes. I took a piece of Paper towel and dried the inside, stood it upright to dry another mouthpiece. And found a pool of water at the bottom of my Syos mouthpiece, dried it up and still there was more water appeared.🤔🤔

Great review as always. Impressive sound but I would prefer something brighter. On the good side at least you know where your lost sock ended up. P.S. As a doctor, we don’t treat scans we treat patients.

Brighter? Funny how we all hear and describe things differently. To me the Tivon model is much darker less sizzle and a deep core. I have one, and I would say it is much darker than a Reso chamber or Slant and Soloist. But again... ;)

Your hand /finger complaint may (and I say may although it worked for me) be eased by subtle repositioning of the pearl touches on your Mk6. Just looking at 'stills' of you playing .quite typical of Selmers , is that the dominant 2 (Middle finger) is forcing a twist back onto the 3 (G ) and cramping the G# (4) . By repostioning the 2 middlefinger A note pearl outwards about 10mm relaxes the whole hand . It does this by accepting that the middle finger is dominant and now not forcing the 3 and 4 finger backwards. I have had this done to my Mk6 Tenor with astonishing results. So much so that players who'v'ed blown it say how relaxing the otherwise cramped LH layout is . If you have an email I'll send you pictures of it . Jonny

Hi Jonny I’ve had the G key moved out 5mm or so but it’s interesting to hear about moving the a key. Please do email me the pictures. D

@@DanForshaw What is the email address ? By moving the G key pearl out is making the matter worse ! Looking at stills of you playing your 2 fingerA is hardly on the pearl - just catching the edge -real bad for an injured hand . .Look for your self . A good trick is to place your fingers onto some paper and mark where the pads touch-in a relaxed way.. Then transfer onto the instrument. It will be miles out .Remember that the 2 (middle finger) is dominant -both physically and in patterns so getting that 'happy' will relax the others. Jonny

Just so you know, the name of the other guy is Daro Behroozi, not Darius Behreeci. He's the tenor player in the band the Lucky Chops. You should check them out.

Expanding my previous comment; Ion Yoda is right. For some reason -probably the problem you have had with your left middle finger- has meant that you can not extend it a bit more so as to rest completely on the A key. For any good repairman it is very easy to extend, at least 5 mm. forward said key; but I dare to tell you something else, for some reason said finger can not be extended, rather than modify your sax (which, evidently from what I see has been done averaging its keys for fingers longer than yours) the situation goes through
that you achieve without pain extend about 4 to 5 mms. that middle finger so that the claw is not so closed, should be like when we drink a glass (good beer hehe! attention not a chop!;)) A good therapeutic recommendation is that in a bowl with warm water, let it remain minutes without moving it so that the tendons, muscles and bones are tempered and then very slowly begins to move that finger, you should not feel pain. You do not feel pain at that same moment put cold water (not cold, only cold) in that sector and then immediately place the affected hand back into the container with warm water. Repeat several times if the pain continues. These should disappear as you repeat this practice. Remember that the brain has registered this pain at some point and its pnemic trace remains for a while, you have to normalize that. They will not serve any other therapeutic and less operations. Another thing, check your cholesterol, if you eat meat should be lean and well roasted, try to eat without salt or low consumption and less sugar and fat. This chemistry reacts badly combined. That it serves you! a hug.

Hello Dan, it seems to me or when you play with octave (Denner) that mouthpiece Syos (yellow) sounds like a bagpipe? Probably that sector of the baffle does not correspond with how well it sounds down. Excellent everything yours. Thank you thank you thank you!!! Silverio from Argentina
