You can use second ability to proliferate oil counters
In a desperation where mana for proliferate is not available, you can kill Archfiend to Yawgs first ability!
I personally want to give the Archfiend to an opponent and remove the oil counters from it...heh.
Just stuff it in Jon Irenicus. "Here you go an 8/8 flier, have fun. While you can."

BUT, if you clone it with True Polymorph to your opponents Sol Ring, no etb!
Archfiend of the Dross is such a perfect design for demons.
I feel like it's a race that has been designed "wrong" so many times. If you make a deal with a demon, i.e. summon one to fight for you, there should be a catch. Making a pact with a demon should come with both great power and potential, but also high risk.

Ughhhh - I hate that you very well might be right. I would love for WOTC to actually commit on these lost walkers but that's a novel & interesting idea; something corporate America seems utterly anathemic to.
I hope he fails to save them. I am tired of MtG using resets.
@@Akumatron I don't want a reset per se, like I want it to have happened, so no time shenanigans and such but I wouldnt mind a storyline of them finally finding a way to reverse the process
@@lavenderwalrus9875 I just think its lazy writing. I like that Teferi went back in time to learn how the Sylex works thats cool. It doesn't mess with anything. I'm not sure how M:tG does their time walk stuff like if they make a new time line like in the Marvel movies or if its one time line that gets altered. But I like it when the heroes fail if it allows for new interesting ones to come in and new things to happen. Its an old sci fi trope- torture your babies to see them succeed.
Small correction about Laelia, the Blade Reforged. Laelia's ability states that when one or more cards enter exile, she gets a +1/+1 counter, so when the sword says that it puts 2 cards into exile, they go in at the same time. This would only trigger Laelia's ability once, since the 2 cards going into exile counts as a single action of "one or more" cards.
Leila works well with cascade. It counts every card then
on attack, first ability will trigger granting a counter, if combat damage is ensured, leaving her with 2 seperate instances of her second ability granting as Prof said, a 7/7 Laelia, with 2 counters and +2/+2 off the sword
@@quezer0 yeah she works fantastic with cascade. If you have wild magic sorcerer and laelia on the battlefield at the same time, she gets big very very fast. I played a match against a friend where I was cascading for 1 and I think the only card left in my library that it could hit was sol ring, and it was 2nd from the bottom. So Laelia got like +80/+80 or something ridiculous like that
I'm new to MTG apprx. 3 months or so. This will be my first pre-release. Thank you professor for all of your videos! I don't know how much more time you have in your schedule but I would love to see you host interactive work shops for new players. Even if my local store were to put it on with you as a virtual host or something. Plus I live in the south where games like this aren't as popular as football so my closest store is actually 2 hours away. Working as a Paramedic, my hours are crazy so having access to your knowledge is invaluable to me and my wife. Thank you again!
Attending my first ever prerelease with two other friends who are newer to mtg this Saturday! I'm definitely watching out for that draft guide, as the prerelease event will also be our first time playing draft!

Pretty Fitting that All Will Be One causes a feedback loop with a Tyranid creature card.
I don't want to be a villain but next to Bitterblossom there is also Dreadhorde Invasion. Sorry, I just had to get it out. I know it's not the exact same thing. But in my aristocrats deck it's basically a Bitterblossom without lifeloss.
But it still has life loss D:

Thanks prof for the rule zero mention with AWBO and Quest. That combo reminds me of sanguine bond and exquisite blood (blood bond as I like to call it) in that it is easily slotted into any deck that runs those colors. I played against a guy who was running Vito and he played blood so we asked if he ran the other end. He said no. we still dealt with the blood since Vito goes with it too but at the end of the game, he admitted he was "bluffing" and did run both pieces. We called him out saying that's not bluffing and was straight up lieng and he shouldn't lie about that in the future. So I'm glad you brought up the rule zero suggestion to say if you run the full combo or just want to value off AWBO
I kinda slept on the card All Will Be One at first until I started thinking about it more, none of the stuff you mentioned came to my mind but Vexing Puzzlebox is an interesting include for a chance based big burn as a simple mana rock! Vexing Puzzlebox is also good with The Filigree Sylex and Lux Artillery from the same set, very exciting combos ahead!

You forgot Dreadhorde Invasion. It doesn't make wide tokens, but does make an increasingly tall token on every upkeep for 2 mana. And always having one zombie token guaranteed at upkeep is huge for a lot of decks.
That's what I thought, too. It probably was not included due to not producing further tokens as long as the army exists.
It also has a similar life gain effect that turns on once your army gets big enough
@@Playingwithproxies My favorite thing to do is to get a horde of regular 2/2's from other cards and pump/lord them to the threshold for a gargantuan life bump.
I said the same thing! If you're sacrificing a token a turn, Dreadhorde Invasion performs just as well as Bitterblossom, plus some added synergies with +1/+1 counters.
i love that card honestly. That and bolas' citadel are my fav cards from that set by far.
I want the rat in the set, but I find the odd booster can be an interesting pallet of possibilities to add to the collection, sometimes more interesting than others.
if you want the rat and a couple boosters, get the regular bundle. You get 8 set boosters from it and the rat is guaranteed as the bundle's alt-art promo card
Phyrexian Vindicator! I came back a few months ago from an over decade hiatus since new phyrexia, and I have a couple og Obliterators. Vinducator is not only a white take on the card, but the art and flavor text are both callbacks to the first printing of obliterator and I just need to have it.
Yeah I think I’ll go to the prerelease draft and hope I get lucky. Draft is fun. Even sealed.

I personally think Venerated Rotpriest will absolutely be a house in several formats! So damn powerful, and for ONE mana!?... .... nudge nudge wink wink xD

This set is absolutely insane, and I can’t wait to see how it affects standard and pioneer formats.
Normally I agree with the "buy singles" sentiment but there are too many great cards here; I think it will be more fun to buy a booster box and crack packs and then buy what I missed that I still feel compelled to get. Just the cards you listed alone would be more than the price of a box to pick up, but getting a box means getting copies of other cards I *kind* of want but wouldn't buy as singles, getting uncommons and commons as well I may want access to, and being surprised and having fun opening packs. But this is also the first set in awhile that I felt getting a box would be a fun way to blow $100, it's not often it happens. Alternatively, singles will probably be a better ideas a few weeks after the set is out and boxes are opened en mass, but you run the risk of a card you want blowing up in price, which can also happen.

Your picks were reasonable, Prof, but I was surprised Phyrexian Vindicator and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines didn’t make the cut. Vindicator is an infinite combo with Guilty Conscience in Mono-W and has other uses with Pariah effects. Meanwhile, the new Norn instantly becomes a staple in the 99 of any W-based blink deck like Brago and Preston.

The card all will be one is perfect for "Death's Presence" it essentially allows you to chain sacrifice your tokens shooting your opponents as you go. Death's presence says; when a creature you control dies, Put counters on target creature equal to it's power. If you have an Omnath, Locus of Rage Deck you'll be spitting fire with every elemental token that dies.

Great video! Your recaps of these sets really do help me reconsider what cards I actually want in a new set, which end up making me realize I spend way too much on booster packs.
Regarding the Ichormoon Gauntlet, there is another new card in ONE that is crazy with the 0 ability, which is the Blue Dominus creature; 2UU for a legendary 3/5 that doubles proliferate. I realized that, when combined with any single other way to proliferate, you can create an infinite combo using Jace, Cunning Castaway from Ixalan! Granted, to start the combo, you need to get Jace to 6 loyalty at least, but with the Dominus out, any other planeswalker or non creature spell that proliferates will do the trick. Once Jace is at or above 6, you can -5 him to create 2 token copies of him that are non-legendary. Using 1 of the tokens, 0 him to double proliferate, which adds 2 more loyalty to the other token copy, enabling you to -5 that token copy to make 2 more tokens. Repeat the process any number of times so that you have any number of jace copies, then with Ichormoon Gauntlet, you can achieve infinite turns with your Jace copies on the following turn.
Oh how fun it sounds to take infinite turns via Planeswalker combo, right?!

Heartless Act will be a great answer for the Archfiend (force opponent to use an instant on the stack at upkeep in response, lol); excited about the Hive, though, seems like a great addition to Selesnya token generator decks, especially w/ Venerated Rotpriest, I love Toxic(/Infect) as a mechanic!

Archfiend of the Dross is a perfect fit for Yahenni decks. The commander is a sac outlet if you need one, the deck runs a ton of board wipes, and has a heavy focus on killing opposing creatures to pump Yahenni up as much as possible.
I will buy Two. Urtet and Sword of Forge and Frontier. All I need. I got the last card for my Faldorn deck on the same day the sword was spoiled. Immediately had to make a cut for it.

Got 2 compleated bundle boxes for 150€. With the 10 lands in each being worth 5€ and might go up in price if the product runs out. I feel like i'm getting great value for the price AND I get to crack 24 set boosters, along with 4 chances to get oil-slick rare atraxa or elesh norn. With the poison precon deck on the way, Phyrexia all will be one will be a treat!
Why Dreadhorde Invasion is not named in number 5 as a 2 mana token generator?
Because it only makes 1 token and grows it on subsequent turn, you ain't going wide with it

But i still think that the prof should've mentioned, at least not at the same level, but because bitterblossom in commander is more heavily used as a sac fodder generator than in go wide strategies, in which case, dreadhorde acomplishes the same goal in the same manner

Haven't watch the video, but want to say that I was looking exactly for that kind of video. Am back to MTG, bought a display of dominaria remastered, and while it was fun to crack them boosters, I feel like with this set, I'll only get the best singles for my decks and the ideas that I have.

One card that I'm excited for is Red Sun's Twilight. By Force is already kind of a staple for any of my Red EDH decks in addition to Vandalblast. So, for one extra red mana, getting tokens of the ramp I'm destroying really sweetens the deal for me since it mitigates the cost of itself.
In more specific cases where I destroy multiple things that produce more than one mana, I could potentially get a net positive amount of mana after casting this. The pipe dream there being a sweep of Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Thran Dynamo, and Guilded Lotus or something - if they have that much on board I've likely already lost, but still.
In cases where they have one high-value artifact, and I have many low-value ones, I could potentially remove a threat and turn that threat back on it's owner.
Also, it says 'up to X artifacts' so (and someone will likely have to correct me on this.) the spell won't fizzle out if someone sacrifices something I'm targeting. It's also a card that says 'at the beginning of the next End Step' so it's also one of those cards Obeka likes. I don't really play Obeka, but it's worth noting here.
It really feels like I potentially have a new staple card and that excites me more than anything.
Oh man, I didn't think about Skrel's Hive. Definitely need to figure out how to splash white in my 8 cast deck now. I've been thinking about it for awhile now.

Just trying to back into magic after a 15 year break… overwhelmed with where to start. I’m not a complete noob… but commander wasn’t around when I stopped. Starting fresh with 0 cards.
I bought a whole set booster box. 30 packs I opened. Mostly good. Got some decent stuff.

Forgot the name of the card but there is another token 2 cmc enchantment from war of the spark that creates zombie army tokens and keeps amassing the tokens into a bigger creature
One other enchantment other than bitterblossom and the new white hive that makes a token a turn, Dreadhorde invasion
Semi-correction: Dreadhorde invasion CAN make a token every upkeep at 2 mana, assuming it dies every turn. Everyone knows this but I couldn't not provide ENGAGEMENT

Norn's Wellspring seems pretty good for aristocrat strategies as well. Great value at a low rate.
If there is any set you should spend your money on it's this set. It's the best set to come out since the last Phyrexia set.

Great list, I'm surprised at the sword being only a honorable mention, but you're right, the set really is jam full of powerfull commander cards. Although I have to admit, I really don't understand the prof's hatred for planeswalker, especially in commander, where they are significantly less good. I get that teferi, karn and others have been and still are oppressive in certain formats, I'd still rather face some of them than the stupid monkey, archon of cruelty or Sheoldred. Just my opinion, awesome vid oh and also wow the gratuitous jab at voyager lol
