*Compressor Stall!* Ex- Air Algerie Boeing 767-300 (B763) landing in Montreal (YUL/CYUL)

  • This 28 year old non-ER 767 is being ferried to their new owners in Florida. This 767 started its life with Air Algerie, but because its not ETOPS, not ER and getting old; the airline has decided to retire it... Here she is landing in Montreal on ferry flight from Algiers via Shannon.
    Upon landing, it would appear the aircraft suffered a compressor stall which caused the flame... Never seen that before!
    I hope you ENJOY the video
    It flight was flying as AH7000 but for some reason Montreal tower kept on confusing it with our normal Algerie flight; AH2700...
    The flight was suppose to depart a day later to Florida but it would appear that the FAA would not grant them access into U.S airspace causing a delay. It had nothing to do with this incident. They had to wait until they received a green light before departing Montreal for the US

    This plane was taken out of service and was sold to a company in America to be dismantled, so the paint on the plane’s fuselage covered the company’s name.

    Its always interesting to me how end of life airframes almost always visually look perfectly fine like they could just keep being used, but due to cycle life the airframe is "used up" and would cost more to overhaul than just buy a new one so they get stored for parts then scrapped. I always wonder how some planes seem to never stop flying though like KC-135's and B-52's. Virtually all of them have to be way over the cycle life of those airframes but they are still being used. Always wondered how they do that.

    • @Blackbarron247
      @Blackbarron247 4 года назад

      Cost of inspection vs replacement. Military aircraft typically cost more to buy new than to remanufacture/maintain. Airlines can replace an aircraft more frequently, because maintenance gets expensive. The physics side is the fact that aluminum has a finite fatigue life, meaning that under fluctuating loads, aluminum will fail eventually, unlike steel which has an effectively infinite fatigue life under the right conditions.
      I would venture a guess that the rated cycle life is not failure cycle life, and it denotes a point in which the manufacturer effectively guarantees the part will not fail. With increased inspection and repair you're able to overcome this somewhat (something more intensive than a D check I would guess). The A10 is getting new wings for the exact reason you mention iirc
      Long story short, its a maintenance vs acquisition cost issue. (you can also bring in politics to the military, but that's another story)
      (Edit to better address your comment)

    Great catch on video. I don’t know why people got so worked up about it though. While it looks and sounds scary, a compressor stall like this during reverse thrust is not uncommon, and is perfectly normal. Temporary disruption of normal airflow through the engine is all it is. One pop like that during reverse thrust doesn’t need an engine inspection.

    Perhaps not the smoothest run. Luckily not much of a crosswind component. Otherwise, on an icy surface, that tiny stall would have made it difficult to keep it centered.

    because no authorised by FAA ?
    After 28 years service of B767 operator air algeria Thk
    I think the compagnie air algerie orders & replaced B767 by B787-8 or 9 may be B777X ?
