you can use ashes around your fruit trees and bushes. Had an "old-timer" tell us that and they said it would help them to produce and I did that and it worked!
My Great Grandmother told me many years ago to help dry creosote to throw a little rock salt on the fire, I found it dried the creosote and made brushing the chimney much easier as well as making the creosote less flammable.
hello Doug and Stacy, you guys have gown back to the way I was raised on my grand parents farm back in the forties. I remember how badly my granny and my mom wanted to get off that farm. they finally did and was never really happy ever again. I now have 14 acres that my mom bought for me before she died. there is no home or any other liveable bldg. on it but someway or somehow I will get to live there soon, and it will have to besoon since I am already 76. I love what you are doing. on your video about the sweet potatoes, it didn't look like you had let the top die back enough. pa always let them really start turning brown, a least halfway before digging, so more of the smaller ones could grow larger. that meant that we harvested a largercrop from each plant. thanks so much for your sharing keen up the good work.
I hope you were able to make the transition to your property! I’ve just done the same with no kitchen, no bathroom and no running water. It’s not so bad - thank goodness for Doug and Stacy for their continued inspiration ❤️
We used to do this in the morning before setting another fire. We'd use the fire tongs to fish out enough embers to reset the fire. Lot less heat to work with and you can get it a lot cleaner. Just my 2 cents.
This was really interesting, I'm sorry for your friends who lost their home, it's a terrible time of year for it to happen, I hope they're being helped by their community. Thanks for the maintenance tips.
thank you so much. i've been living the wood stove life 3 winters or so and i've not heard about these creosote logs. i use seasoned hard wood, but occasionally other stuff when it is all that is available or very abundant and got a deposit like that in my wood stove (not as nice as yours! no oven. just a top loading wood stove to keep warm and i always have 2 kettles full of water going and cook on it too). i just been scraping it out of the stove at the end of the season and scooping it out and then takin apart the pipe (at least the easier pieces) and shakin it and runnin a steel brush on the inside. if someone had told me about these creosote logs my life would have been much better lol. in a few months my wood stove life will be a lot simpler ;) thanks so much. new sub. checkin out your videos now ;) all the best
we used to do it every other day to keep it clean (the ashes) and still do it in our woodstove in the basement and we use a mirror to look up the chimney every day to make sure it is clean and if not we have to clean it. thanks for showing others how to..
Used to heat with wood, back before I moved to the city. Really looking forward to getting back to it! Bought a manufactured home last winter & it came with a fireplace; currently shopping for a woodstove to fix that hole!
Very helpful. I love watching your videos. You and Stacy are doing things the way that my husband and I will be soon. Hopefully we will be living on our land in the South/Central Missouri area within the next two years.
That's a great stove and I like the flue being completely vertical. Also, rocket stoves are fantastic for outside cooking, especially since they don't require much wood to operate them-usually just broken up sticks and twigs, much of which is usually laying around on the ground in semi-forested areas.
Hi, I just found your channel and subbed. I love the size of your stove. Thanks for doing this video. I never knew about a clean out log. You are so right about getting to know others better.I have met one of my blog friends in person. And have for years been able to maintain a friendship with some others around the world. The internet is a wonderful thing. I will go see some more of your videos. Best wishes to you and your family. E :)
Very important info, thank you for sharing! I don’t have a wood-burning cook stove yet, just a hot plate, rocket stove and sun oven but I’d like to acquire one in the future 🙏🏻
Once a year my husband got on the roof, used a long heavy chain dropped down the flue, swirled it around and around to loosen suet, then cleaned ash and suet out of our wood stove. Edit: Sorry I posted this before you mentioned doing the same thing. 😐 Lesson learned to watch full video before posting.
because your chimney is so short probably don't need to worry but if ever you have a chimney fire take a glass of water and throw it into the fire and it will make steam and the steam will put out the fire in the chimney! Good to know!
We have a 30 degree angle on our stove, so we remove the portion of the pipe and clean the remainder of the straight pipe with the brush and rods and clean the removed portion with the brush and steel brushes. Did you push the ash off the top of the stove or draw it into your firebox? I try not to let the top of the oven get more than a 1/2 " of ash on top before pushing off the side of oven or drawing into the firebox. :)
well mr doug i bought a used cook stove and they hadn;t cleaned it and it had a real costic order when i fired it up but with a good cleaning the smell went away . ivan painter
Do you not like lehmans because it's over priced? I drove up last summer (it's only an hour or so north of me). They had a beautiful store and tons of interesting things, but they were way over priced in my opinion
Great Video Doug!!! I was about to ask what you use the ash for but I guess you already said it. It looked like the ash tray was trying to give you problems when you put it back in. LOL We loved it at your place the kids didn't want to come home! We can't wait to see you again and have you out to our place as well. Thank you so much for the shout out! We have to get cracken on our videos to! We have been lazy :( Shalom!
I would love to see more likes on this video, I have yet to come across a single video that I have not taken home some great nugget of information. Constantly growing and learning.
Great channel! I really appreciate the content. In the winter, when using the wood cook stove, is that your only source of heat? Or do you use another wood stove elsewhere in your home? Keep the videos coming, Thanks.
what do you do with the ashes? they are good for so many things....on your garden, on your walkway when it is slippery, to a vehicle unstuck and many more...
Doug, Love your video. What are you using for a mat under your stove? I can't see in this video? Trying to get some ideas for something lightweight to go under my wood cook stove which is coming soon. You have inspired me once again! Thanks!!!
Just left a buddies hunting camp (Catskills Mts.) shown him this video. We're cleaning the stove & chimney next weekend, acquired brushes & soot saw. Dam city-slicker whom clueless in sweeping a chimney. Chimney fires don't discriminate.
Doug - Do have to take off the chimney to get in and clean behind the oven or can you reach that spot with the tool through one of the lids on top? How often are you fully cleaning the stove around the oven and also the chimney? Thanks.
Do you have a video how to cook and bake on wood stove???We have a wood stove that is our only heat. I cook on the top sometimes but can't figure out the oven. We have an electric stove upstairs but I'd like to learn to use the whole thing
I have a problem perhaps you can help me with . I have had a pioneer maid cook stove with a water tank on the side for 12 years. As I was cleaning the bottom out a foot long fibre seal came out. Years ago I was told the oven seal may over time need replacing. I am worried now to start my fire. And can’t find anything on line about it. I live in Canada. And ordered the stove out of Ontario. Would you be able to guide me to find more info please.
Good information. I have to ask about the clearance between the stove and the walls. It appears that yours is quite close to the backside. Can the recommended distance depend on the material it is against? Thanks
May I ask why you guys ultimately went with another model stove rather than the Bakers choice? Just curious because we are considering buying one for our homestead and we're hoping to make a good (and safe) choice. Thank you in advance. Shalom!
Why would you clean an oven that has wood burning in it? Maybe I'm just a dumb city slicker but I would let the fire burn all out, and then let the oven cool before I cleaned it. Is there a reason to clean it that way? Thanks
Hello Doug join your channel about 2 weeks ago, question for you, I'm getting ready to go off grid here in Texas, my question is how do you know what size stove to get? And is there any thing special you need for the floor and walls so as not to burn anything?
+Seth Thomas If I may offer an explanation: When you want to use the oven on a wood cook stove, you move a lever that diverts the heat (and smoke) around the oven box. Cook stoves tend to build up more creosote than a regular wood burner, because the smoke has to travel further to get into the chimney, and the smoke is cooler once it makes it there.
I know they got a pioneer princess wood cook stove. What happened to the bakers choice wood stove Doug is cleaning out? I really want one. Is the pioneer princess stove a better stove?
also, is triple walled pipe better than double, or just wasted metal? my sister lost her home to fire from her wood stove. I want to make certain that doesn't happen to me. I'm assuming she had buildup.
What kind of fan is that your using I assume it is one of the ones that turns by heat? We was thinking about getting one ourselves this winter. How do you like it?
Hi Doug, What size stove pipe are you using for this stove? We are thinking about purchasing one like it. It has a oval outlet and we were going to get an adapter for round pipe.
I can't find my clean out tool; the one being used at 17 minutes. I have a different stove, but the tool is universal. Anyone know where to get one?? Thanks.
you can use ashes around your fruit trees and bushes. Had an "old-timer" tell us that and they said it would help them to produce and I did that and it worked!

I really would love to have a cookstove one day when I get my property so really appreciate this lesson to keep it in optimal condition.
We're looking forward to having a wood cookstove in out off-grid after we get it built on our land.
We used to do this in the morning before setting another fire. We'd use the fire tongs to fish out enough embers to reset the fire. Lot less heat to work with and you can get it a lot cleaner. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks Doug. I have never seen this before. You make it look simple. Not easy, not hard either, but simple. Step by step gets 'er done!
This was really interesting, I'm sorry for your friends who lost their home, it's a terrible time of year for it to happen, I hope they're being helped by their community. Thanks for the maintenance tips.
Reminds me of mom and dad's Buck stove. Fire is a real possibility with those, but I had forgotten. Thank you for the reminder.
thank you so much. i've been living the wood stove life 3 winters or so and i've not heard about these creosote logs. i use seasoned hard wood, but occasionally other stuff when it is all that is available or very abundant and got a deposit like that in my wood stove (not as nice as yours! no oven. just a top loading wood stove to keep warm and i always have 2 kettles full of water going and cook on it too). i just been scraping it out of the stove at the end of the season and scooping it out and then takin apart the pipe (at least the easier pieces) and shakin it and runnin a steel brush on the inside. if someone had told me about these creosote logs my life would have been much better lol. in a few months my wood stove life will be a lot simpler ;) thanks so much. new sub. checkin out your videos now ;) all the best
Love your show. Just went back to land. I'm loving it. I use the ashes in both the garden & soap making.
Very interesting. I've not seen a cooker stove cleaned before. Plus the ash is good for compost.
Great work Doug! Very informative.
Thank you for this teaching video on how to clean out the wood cookstove. ❤
It was interesting seeing you clean this wood cook stove versus to the Pioneer Princess you now have. The vertical flue is a great idea.
we used to do it every other day to keep it clean (the ashes) and still do it in our woodstove in the basement and we use a mirror to look up the chimney every day to make sure it is clean and if not we have to clean it. thanks for showing others how to..

Good information Doug this is a good learning experience

Good tips, love these stoves.
I like the chain idea, easier than a brush.
Great information and tips. Thank you.
Great help, thank you Doug. Peace
Thank you for making the video!
this is amazing, since we will be getting a wood burning stove. I had never seen this before Thank you
Very informative video and great to see how to properly clean up a wood stove

There is so much to having a wood cook stove!
I loved this so informative!
This is a really great video and very helpful with informative information that is good to know.
Super helpful thank you for your videos!

I used to use heavy leather welders gloves for tending the wood stove
Thanks Doug!

I like your hat. Good video I needed to know this
I just like hats I make felt ones
interesting-thank you.
well mr doug i bought a used cook stove and they hadn;t cleaned it and it had a real costic order when i fired it up but with a good cleaning the smell went away . ivan painter
I LOVE THIS GUY
Shalom Doug! Have you seen the rocket stove mass heater great idea!
Do you not like lehmans because it's over priced? I drove up last summer (it's only an hour or so north of me). They had a beautiful store and tons of interesting things, but they were way over priced in my opinion
I agree. Prices are way high. I live nearby and like to visit the place, but if I can buy similar products elsewhere they will be cheaper.
Great Video Doug!!! I was about to ask what you use the ash for but I guess you already said it. It looked like the ash tray was trying to give you problems when you put it back in. Shalom!
You can use the ash to make lye which can be used to make soap. Ash from burning hardwood is recommended.
I'm wondering if you use the ashes in your garden minus the kreosote? Great video! Thank you for posting.
I would love to see more likes on this video, I have yet to come across a single video that I have not taken home some great nugget of information. Constantly growing and learning.
Up here in Canada we call those butterfly clips, Wing nuts!
Oh we call them paper clips! I wold like to see one of those wing nuts?
Yup that is a wing nut that is what I was thinking! So what does a butterfly clip look like A heavy paper clip?
I looked up butter fly clips and they were those black clips that held a bunch of paper together.
👍Great...
Great channel! I really appreciate the content. In the winter, when using the wood cook stove, is that your only source of heat? Or do you use another wood stove elsewhere in your home? Keep the videos coming, Thanks.
Wood ash minus the creosote would be great on the tomatoes as natural potash.
Tfs! 💜🙏😎
Great info....and miss the days of hearing your cuckoo clock
Hi..... 🎥👍👍👍
When and why did you change to the pioneer princess??? We are in the big debate over what one to get
what do you do with the ashes? they are good for so many things....on your garden, on your walkway when it is slippery, to a vehicle unstuck and many more...
I would love to have a wood stove 🤠
good video, thanks man

So glad I saw this video. Helped to make a decision not to get a wood cook stove.

Just contact where you bought it the seals are sold
Instead of spinning the shaker grates try shaking them by going back and forth
Any reason you upgraded to the Pioneer Princess? Seems like a big jump up for two.
is there a natural alternative for the creosote log...in case I don't have access to them?
Good information. I have to ask about the clearance between the stove and the walls. It appears that yours is quite close to the backside. Can the recommended distance depend on the material it is against? Thanks
C Wood ours is what is recommended but yes, you can get it closer with stuff on the walls like tile
Do you put the as in the compost? Greetings from Holland (Europe) Inge Noordam
Who else is watching this in 2024?
👍
I am a homestead homie💗💗
thanks
My mother in law is going to give us her small wood cook stove that she doesn't use anymore 🎉
that's a lot of stuff doug
John Cashin yes, you cannot be lazy. It's work.
Do you make soap or spread the ashes in your garden?
How often do you clean your stove out like this?

Makes sense, keep up the great videos, im a new subscriber and loving them.
Round TWO! Clean your flue!
whoops going to sleep...

That seems to be an incredible amount of creosote. What type of wood are you burning?

Just bigger and a few other things and we sold that stove to a #homesteadhomie
Hopefully they have designed a better creosote clean-out system.
What stove do you use. Been looking into buying one.
also, is triple walled pipe better than double, or just wasted metal? my sister lost her home to fire from her wood stove. I want to make certain that doesn't happen to me. I'm assuming she had buildup.
Hi! Its ME!!!
Hi ME 👋
Wouldn't the wood burn faster when that is cleaned out???
Is that a TEG (thermal-electric generator) powering the little fan atop the wood stove?
I guess =) the heat turns the fan
What kind of fan is that your using I assume it is one of the ones that turns by heat? We was thinking about getting one ourselves this winter. How do you like it?
Hi Doug, What size stove pipe are you using for this stove? We are thinking about purchasing one like it. It has a oval outlet and we were going to get an adapter for round pipe.
Lehmans.com has the connection
Thanks
Can you make your cleaning logs
I can't find my clean out tool; the one being used at 17 minutes. I have a different stove, but the tool is universal. Anyone know where to get one?? Thanks.
Where did you get the fan on your stove?
