To me there is no question Mariah is the greatest of all time. She does spend a lot of time turning those background vocals into a wall of sound. Layers and layers. Gotta love Ms. Carey! ❤
This song was originally recorded by Brenda K. Star. Mariah actually sang backup for brenda before releasing her own music. Brenda helped her get the music deal with tommy motola at sony music at a party, and that’s how Mariah’s career started.

Mariah always outdoes the original artist when she does a cover. She is just a genius in making a cover her own. Can you please react to Mariah's "I'll be there" MTV unplugged feat Trey Lorenz. That particular live version made it to #1 so u gotta check it out. 😁 and btw, I've never heard anyone else do background vocals like she does. She perfectly layers her own vocals and harmonies. It's breathtaking.

The original was by Brenda K Starr. Mariah’s version is vastly more famous, however, particularly in Brazil for some reason. I think it went #1 on the charts there?
It was more popular in the states too. Brenda's peaked at #13 and Mariah's cover peaked at #2.

What can I say... This song gets me every time. The music video is a homage to one of her idols: Marilyn Monroe and the song is a thank you to Brenda K Star (for whom she sang background vocals). She recorded the song for her #1's album in 1998. Originally the Columbia Records didn't want to include new material on the album, but Mariah refused. She told the company that it would be cheating her fans and she was not going to do so. She stood her ground and one of the songs she recorded was this beautiful gem.

The video is an homage to when Marilyn Monroe performed for the troops. I loved that around the same time Janet Jackson had done a video very similar as an homage to Dorothy Dandridge who was considered a black Marilyn (even tho she had been acting a lot longer than Marilyn and was considered to be a much better actress, but you know it was the 50s).

Yes, this was at the AirForce base - both a video shoot and a live concert. The news covered this back in the day. She did the usual music video thing for the shots and record version needed. Then, put on a concert where she was singing and signing autographs. It was so funny. Mariah got off the stage, one of the men held her mic in front of her while she sang, and she used her hands to sign autographs. She took pics with them the next day in the honorary suit they gave her which you see here in the scenes with her ponytail.

I love Mariah Carey she’s a legend she’s one of the greatest female singers of all time I been listening to her since I was a teenager God bless her I’ll be sad when she passes away (hopefully that won’t be for a long time)
Mariah was the hardest working female artist of the 90's. When this was recorded, she was going through vocal changes. Her non-stop work ethic has started to take its toll on her, and her previously smooth and polished vocals became airier and raspier, so this is one of her first recordings to blatantly display her vocal cracks, which may be a stylistic choice or just a result of wear and tear. It does translate as passion, though, and Mariah is one of those few artists that can make vocal cracks and imperfections sound beautiful.

She really did performed it and several songs..
She was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in this one when MM went to Korea and performed for the troops in February 1954. Mariahs idol is Marilyn Monroe. This was influenced by her. She also bought Marilyns piano and also paid tribute to mm in her song giving me life from caution and she mentioned Norma Jean which was Marilyn real name before she named herself Marilyn Monroe. She loves MM.
Mariah covered this song in 1998, as a tribute to Brenda K. Starr, whom she originally sang back up for, and who introduced her to her first record label.
The video is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, as she visited and sang to the troops during deployment. Hence, why Mariah had the traditional curly hair and sequent dress on stage, in honor of Marilyn Monroe.
