And it's a shame that people criticize her voice at this point in time, but fail to recognize that she is still fairly talented with regards to her writing her own music. To me it's kind of a slap in a face because I don't often see her brag about her skills or her writing and she tries to stay humble for the most part, and I'm sure if she did brag about her great of an artist she is people would still criticize her lol So she can't win either way. I'm not sure if you've done these songs, but please listen to Looking In and Portrait as I feel they give you a deeper glance into what she's been dealing with, how she's been dealing with it and her thoughts/feelings on it(and supposedly these songs go hand-and-hand if I'm not mistaken). Wow. Such a beautiful and deep song. This is def my fave Mariah song and fave album. The lyrics are just unexplainable. You just feel it. The way she sings with so much emotions and pain and hurt and experience. You can just hear it in her tone. She went thru alot in her Marriage and divorce with Tommy mottola. Epic song.
This song she wrote for her freedom west was going in her life . She was able to be her true self and not caged anymore. One thing about her she writes but she writes with meaning . That choir is Mariah and her backup singers . She does a lot of her own background vocals . That’s why she is know as a master of the whistle register, she knows where to place them like her whistle mother a Minnie Ripperton.
The music video is based off a dream Mariah had. She said she cut her hand on the barbed wire fence, but didn't want the video to appear gory. The horse jumped over the fence, but she got stuck before eventually breaking through it. The beginning peep hole part is a reference to a Marilyn Monroe movie.

It’s also a metaphor representing Mariah’s life: she was going through a divorce with her very controlling husband Tommy Mottola and felt as if she was being set free. The song as a whole is about what Mariah wishes he had said to her during the break up. Has he said those things Mariah believed they would’ve ended up back together after some time apart. This song always amazes me with the insane vocals, powerful story and awesome video!

My mom and dad went through a bad divorce and being an only child I felt like I could not talk or let out how I was feeling at the time. This album and especially this song got me through really tough times as a teen at the time. Jack, I watched your video yesterday but due to WIFI issues I could not respond. This is Mariah's signature song... Luckily for me I got to experience all the Mariah eras. This Butterfly era is one of her best (one of my top 3 Mariah eras). She provided and still continue to provide the soundtrack to my life.
I am going to give away my age right now... This song came out 1997 and I was 17... Every time I hear this song, I have visuals of a 17 year old me on an early summer morning (winter in the northern hemisphere) singing to this song, whilst prepping for the last few days of school (graduated school a year ahead of time and university likewise).
