There is some advice though for selling art:
    -Make LOTS of it.
-Approach your career as a business.
-Create quality, another words make sure it's not junk if you are going to charge good money for it.

define " junk" Thats fair advice, but to be honest, banging out lots of paintings, that you dont consider junk wont guarantee you a sale. I do agree that you should approach the business end of sales as a business though. Then again, I am so over the stuck up tooty nosed artist attitude, my motto is, go paint what you feel, have a great time, and if you make a sale great, because then you have more money for supplies to go paint and create more. ( mind you this probably why im broke AF lol )

Lived through child abuse and it awesome to hear about the art chair project! When I was a kid I wasn’t fear-less as in without fear, had plenty of fear instilled in me, but I was fearless because I was determined to be different. The more I look around at the world the more I realise fearless is not wanting to accept the norms, being scared to be different but knowing deep inside it’s the only real authentic option. Art gives me back the voice that was silenced. Oh and the how to be a successful artist courses... mhmm those are con artist courses. How to squash down your authentic self in a few easy steps.

  • @gnarthdarkanen7464
    @gnarthdarkanen7464 5 лет назад +35

For what it's worth, I think the "worst kept secret in art" is that literally ANYTHING will sell. It's only a matter of getting the finished product in front of the right people to sell it... well.
Look, nothing against the infamous "Jack the Dripper", but if that can sell for an unworldly fortune, there's room in the art world for just about any form of visual expression or interpretation of just about anything. I've practically given away highly detailed works one day, and been offered a minor fortune for a "fifteen minute piss-take" the next.
Get the product in front of the right person, and it sells. It doesn't matter what it is, and style versus quality is a whole different discussion... ;o)

Rafi, that was just what I needed to hear. I’m on a journey of self discovery as an artist. Everyone I know is telling me I should paint this or I should paint that. Before losing my job to the pandemic I was a graphic designer. All I did was create things that other people told me to do. I’m so done with that. You’ve just validated for me that it’s ok for me to paint what I want to paint. Thank you.

You hooked me with one video. I smiled through the whole thing, laughed, and was inspired. I knew you had to be in Florida (as well), because I've been getting a lot of the same advice. I see a lot of beach scenes, water scenes, things made of palm fronds and seashells, and the tourists just snap them up. The problem is, I don't want to create what sells, I want what *I* create to sell. There's a huge difference. So I plug away.

I loved the "We are Artists" part and got all warm fuzzies inside. So nice to hear sometimes. I have had a lot of suggestions given to me to paint much smaller so it is easier to ship and so tourists can fit the paintings in their suit cases. Paint Christmas cards or you totally miss that opportunity...These things seemed to make sense, but they were soul killers. I do paint a variety of sizes of paintings, but for the full impact I like large, at least 2x3 foot paintings to convey a story. Yes, it is a pain and expensive to ship. I believe that what my paintings give back in their forever homes daily, far exceeds the extra fuss in getting it there. I am returning to what I love. :)

Thank you for your message. I needed to hear this today because I've been really taking a beating by so-called friends telling me I'm doing it all wrong. My Art work doesn't sell as well as I wish it would; but, it's what I love to draw and to become someone else just so my work sells just doesn't set well. Sure, I'm a starving artist, that is I cannot pay my bills right now; but, trying to become someone else to accomplish paying my bills seems just wrong. I'm trying other avenues to get that done and changing myself isn't one of those venues.

This is great. I make upcycled clothing and crochet hats. People are always giving me suggestions of what they think will sell... Crochet bikinis, those purses made from the butt of jeans. But the thing is I'm not making what I think will sell, I'm making what moves me, and that somehow is what's moves others, and that's what sells. Plus, why would I want to make the latest "trends" that others are all making, driving the price down? You just can't approach the creative process from "what will sell" alone, or even primarily.

Oh my goodness! This was so funny!! I am a portrait artist. Most of my work is inspired by modern dance and ballet. I now live in the South as well-Charleston, SC to be exact, and it’s so true-the art I tend to see is very indicative of the landscape here and rich historical images of a bygone era. It really is waterscapes and sail boats too. It’s lovely in its own right, but I have felt alienated a bit when I look at what I have to offer. I really have to stick to what I’m good at. What I’m passionate about. Thanks for the encouragement!!

"Stuff I want to hang on the walls of my beach front condo" is not art, it's decoration. I'm not dissing decoration, but there's a difference between something that is made up of lovely patterns, colours & textures, and something which is made up of blood, sweat, tears, rage, sorrow and an understanding of our common mortality.

But that isn't me and yes l can do it as l have, on request by a few friends that went crazy over it. While l stood looking at them in amazement. As a wildlife artist l believe in capturing the real look of the subject not a lion with blue fur, etc but this is me. But as many said here it's getting your work in front of the right eyes, which will buy it. As for me l will continue to do realistic looking work as this is me.

you should create this kind of painting and not that
... to the point i become more depressed... why do i need to always do what other say... what the society says... and some said... this is the reality dude ...
WHAT seriously! NO WAY! i will create my own reality i will stop now living from this nightmares. I quit my job i have no money and i am starting to pursue my art career now. This is so scary... like everyone tells but atleast i am doing the things in my own ways. the most scary thing is to live like a robot a forever. depression is still there but now i am figthing it not for others but for myself
Thank you so much... I want to cry now... i really want to create art in my own visions

My old art teacher - who sold his art to nobility here in the UK - told me 'you have to go where the money is'. Those words stuck with me.
That's not a one size fits all approach but resonated very much for me in relation to my specific art.
You may need to find 'where the money is' in relation to your specific style, for too long my mindest was 'if I build it they will come'.
If you can sell purely based on self expression that's great. But for many they will need to find and target a specific audience and appeal to them. It may not be pure expression but if you can create something for a living, unless it's completely against your values, it beats a shitty office job.

I watched this and laughed so much, as I have done the sea oats and beachy scenes. My Hubby thinks this is what I should paint down here. But, I am going to paint what I want to and feel like at the moment. Good video!

I go through the same with my art like you do and Florida has more people who love more beach art and life like animals and ocean stuff kind of art. Believe it or not I had sold one cartoon looking owl painting one time only and one character painting in the past lol I don’t think anyone could ever really expect to make money from making art so it’s better to just show your passion and love for art then to show off for money because whether someone succeeds in making profit from art or doesn’t , it killjoys your fun and enjoyment of how much you enjoy doing it. Do art for yourself and show it off as a teaching to people what art is all about. Art is created by feelings not by money

Thanks! 40 plus years ago I was told that I had to create stuff that sells, which to me was selling out. Before I took painting classes in college, I painted quite well, but those courses totally stifled me, and I quit painting. 3 weeks ago I bought acrylics, dug out my brushes, yes I still had them, and started painting again at the rip old age of 67. What you have to say is correct. My idea is to paint what I want and develop my style, and ENJOY painting. Do I want to sell my paintings? At this time I really don't care. Thanks for the video, as it was inspiring and refreshing.

Super helpful! Doing artwork for a show and my family, well-meaning, did what your people did. Suggested things that our popular right now... like bees, and chapels. I like bees, but am I super into painting them? Nah. And chapels? Not religious, so.. no. I have my fingers crossed that my original stuff sells at my first art festival in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video! Makes me feel better about my choices.

Drunk Jesus on the beach with bullet nipples needs to be a thing now lol.
Also I live in the north, lots of hunting, fishing, snow, nature and sadly people want paintings of this stuff for their "summer cottages" (more like your 2nd mansion, get away from your other mansion). Stuff I'm not fond of painting but it sells. I found that I only have to do maybe a few a year and the people who get them look at my regular art and tend to get something for their kids or the husband will get a super hero painting for his man cave. Sometimes they can be open to getting something other than "whats popular or expected" for the area. Loved the video. You hit on a lot of things I've come across myself.
