Shoei rf1200, gt air, and Arai Corsair are all great bot cheap helmets. I still think there would be battery issues with this helmet and you may have to even order or send in the helmet for a replacement. It's not a far fetched idea. The trch is cool but reevu makes a helmet where you can see behind you without any batteries and to be honest my rf1200 beats almost everything out there for street riding. It would take a lot more than a hud to make me want it. Field of view Field of view in full tuck How quiet/loud it is Wind resistance (my rf1200 has non) Weight Snell Approved Airflow Pad comfort but also ability to stay snug after break in Pinlock? Price... I use to work in the motorcycle industry and it can be hard to get people to even soend $400 on a helmet let alone $1,500. Price would have to be adjusted especially with this helmet not able to meet snell approval.
+Zalonka It's an early adopter price. There's nothing else like this on the market, so I'd expect the price to be high right now. I'm sure we'll see other companies following suit which will drive the price down to a more reasonable level pretty quickly.
my issue with all of these smart helmets is simple, after 5 years the materials in them degrade and you gotta replace it if you want your dome safe. so what every 5 years you have to fork over the equivalent of a craigslist dirt bike to get a replacement? no thanks. bc you know they will have a new model by then and you won't be able to get the older one cheaper.
+SiberiaN I hear what you're saying, but I think the cost of this tech will come down. Look at the price of a DVD player 15 years ago compared to today.
+Brian Keith That's exactly what I've been saying all along. What happens when you need to use it for what a helmet is MEANT for? I've been watching the Nuviz Ride:Hud for that reason. Too bad they have been SUPER slow on any kind of news regarding production.
A friend of mine had ordered the AGV Pista GP vr46 edition for $1400 and I had the pleasure of using it for a while because it didn't fit him. Anyway; I can say that helmet was awesome and would definitely understand that a helmet with so much r&d would demand such a high price
+FormedAndFunctioned Ya Im not disputing the fact that it's an awesome helmet and if I had 1500 just laying around I would buy it, just to say I have it. but because we all know the average person dosent really need this or have the cash for it ...it's just an outrageous price. I've never heard of this brand before today.
Really pumped about your full review for the Skully. I love that fact your not willing to do a review properly until you have had the helmet for a few weeks and you give your honest opinion without bias. I think it shows character
Question... Do the helmets electronics work with the Sena? I plug my own headphones into my Sena for music/gps/phone etc. Would that be an issue? Like... Say you were using a Sena for music/gps/phone could you still use the GPS feature on the Skully?
+SUB. DELINQUENT Thats an interesting situation. Not sure how I could test that with the phone having to be bluetooth connected to both devices but I can certainly try. You're basically wanting the skully to perform GPS and rear camera while the Sena handles phone calls and music?
+SUB. DELINQUENT Hey Sub D! I watch your videos and I'm a big fan!! I purchased this helmet on their crowd funding campaign 2 years ago. I have not yet received my helmet and as far as I know nobody else has either. I have spent $1700 on a helmet that doesn't exist yet. They keep pushing back the delivery date every few months. Skully does not yet have a deliverable product and the original backers are wondering if they ever will... I'll post a review if this myth of a helmet ever becomes a reality.
Your First Impression video is more informative and realistic than other FULL reviews on RUclips. That being said, I'm definitely going to make my decision based on your FULL review of the Skully AR-1. Keep up the awesome videos!
I'll be honest, I haven't clicked one of your videos in a few months. Your production quality has gone through the roof! Very nice! Looking forward to the full review. I'm not sure $1500 worth of tech in a helmet is worth it, but I thought the same about the Scala Q3 until I bought it. Now I can't ride without it.
I remember when you had us go to Skully's social media pages and had us ask them to get you a Skully, glad to see you finally have your hands on this product!
Hey Chase, I know this is an old video, but FYI the app draining your phone battery is not a software issue. Anytime you're using the GPS on your phone, it drains the battery regardless of the app.
Glad to see these things making their way into the wild. I've been looking into it for a bit now and I hadn't seen much recent info. Thanks for the impressions, Chase!
+Aquila Arroyo i have seen it at work, it is about as fast as transitions lenses that you see people wear with their prescription glasses. Sine the ditched the lcd tinting it does not transition ass fast but that also means the helmet wont "blink" on you when you go between buildings and trees on a bright day.
My Shoei RF-1200 has a Transitions photo-chromatic visor with pinlock insert and its nice. No fogging and no switching shields it costs about $150.00 bucks extra to get the visor.
Chase, so cool of you to do the first impression vid. You know we'd be asking you on the daily until that full review comes out, but this should hold us over until then. :)
Chase, what a refreshing change to a review video. I think you got to the core of the issues, questions, and concerns a potential buyer would need to know about this product. To be straight, I am mostly annoyed by these types of vids, but enjoyed yours and subscribed. I am definitely going to get one! I look forward to more info on your channel.
I feel the spoiler is a little high up and will cause drag when tucked on a sports bike, surely a spoiler in the position of that on the agv corsa/pista would be more suited
+downshift83 I thought so as well man. I will say after riding with a system that one single company had their hands on I think it creates a much more designed experience over a company just making some thing to tac onto a regular helmet.
+downshift83 I feel like it would have been really difficult to do that without seriously compromising the display based on visors of different shapes & levels of optical correctness. It'd be nice to be able to save some money buying just a retrofit kit, but I'd be willing to bet that Skully would've gone that route & saved years of R&D on helmet design if it was feasible.
On your review could you put your camera inside the helmet looking out, so we could maybe see the heads up display in action. Or at least get a good idea of how much space it takes up, etc.
Head up displays are one of those things you just have to see in real life to appreciate it. I have one in my car and taking pictures or videos of it simply doesnt do it justice unfortunately
This is great to see! Just in time for riding season as well! Looking forward to your review. If this helmet stays awesome, it is going to make riding in high traffic areas great as well with you be able to focus on what is in front of you while being able to monitor around you and keeping your eyes where they need to be.
wow.. a $1500 helmet without DD ring lock? I know this helmet wasn't inteded for racing purpose, but still.. a micro lock on such an expensive helmet looks ridiculous
Definite +1 for the photochromatic visor. I have one on my Bell helmet and absolutely love it. I wear glasses when i ride because I still haven't figured out how to make my eye not shake too much when putting contacts in. The visor is a lifesaver. I can ride east in the morning, west in the afternoon, and at night, with the same visor.
My speed and strength has the same quick release. I could never go back to a double d ring. Its so nice to easily operate it with gloves on (like when I realize I forgot to cinch it down before taking off).
Great initial first impression. Really like that you try to give an honest, unbiased review. I think the bottom line for me is, this helmet, if it works well can help save lives and make riding safer. To me, I think that's absolutely worth $1500. However, if it has issues with the tech breaking, camera problems, voice command issues, etc, it could really spoil the helmet and cause it to be a huge bust. At that price point, you need to have an AMAZING and FLAWLESS experience. So they really need to get things right the first time around.
+Grant SKULLY Hey Grant, that's great to know. So if something goes wrong in the helmet would that mean we would be shipping them back to you guys for fixing? Also, I know with smart phones, batteries are always an issue with longevity. A helmet at that price point would be something I'd want to hold onto for a long time. Are the batteries easily replaceable or have they been tested as far as how long they last etc? And finally, I ride a GSXR 600 and have a growing youtube channel. I'd love to get my hands on one of these to do a review/initial impressions myself. Feel free to shoot me an email if that's something that could happen in the future. JaretCampisi@gmail.com
It seems like you have a very positive view and experience with the helmet already. So based on that I'd say you think its worth the money if you can afford it. My thing is, with these base reviews coming out how long until icon finds a way to come out with a similar style and produces it for $1000. It will be interesting to see what comes of tech helmets in the next year. Glad you got one to test and are reviewing because you seem to have a great way of doing so.
i have a photocromathic visor on my bell and thats the only reason i have not changed helmet brands when getting a new helmet, transition technology is just awesome
thanks for an awesome first impressions video, i've been wondering for a while to see how this helmet will pan out especially after seeing the delays in release. As far as your cable problem you could potentially use a" Adjustable Clamp Black, Wire, Adhesive Backed" to help give it a home. Would love to own one sometime, love the video and the helmet!
Good job Chase as always! I hope you get to do a give away because that's probably my only chance of ever owning one. That price tag is a little hard to swallow with 3 little ones at home! I love the look and the concept behind it. Definetly looking forward to the big review.
***** Not an Arai. You can bounce one of those and it won't be any worse for wear, save for the paint. Polycarbonate cracks. Fiberglass doesn't. Sure, you have to replace either one after a crash, but at least you don't blow $1500 if the helmet gets dropped or falls off something. Skully should have used better shell material. Polycarbonate is junk.
Grizz Axxemann Out of the dozens of helmets I have dropped or seen dropped I have NEVER seen a poly helmet crack, but as Skully uses carbonfibre reinforced polycarbonate your argument is invalid. It's also invalidated by the fact that the shell material is actually the least important factor in helmet safety. They use carbonfibre in high end helmets because it ways less, not because its a better material. And if we're really getting into the details the actual makeup of the poly or carbon fibre will have an immense impact on it's durability, there are high end polycarbonates and low end glass and carbon fibre materials. In fact, most carbon fibre materials are stiffer and more likely to fracture than poly which makes them a poorer choice for safety because the absorb less impact force.
I have glasses that have "transition lenses" , which is the same as the visor. The glass has tech that when uv rays hit them, it absorbs the light and makes it into electrical energy that sends a pulse through the visor. This isn't enough to shock someone, but the crystal it is made of is similar to a computer screen. Love your content and keep it up chase!
$1500 is a lot of money but it's cool to see a lot of the gadgets that we traditionally attach to our motorcycle being retrofitted into a helmet (e.g. Sena 10C being a camera and bluetooth headset in one.).
The GPS killing your phone battery is simply because GPS in general uses a lot of power. And add the fact that you are using bluetooth (I assume) which when using the GPS, is constantly having to send data to the helmet, using even more power. Maybe they can improve it a little, but I doubt they can make a huge difference
For those complaining about the price tag, it may be premuim but its not that bad. Its like google glass/ HUD + a good helmet + a rear view camera. Google glass alone was $1500 so everything else adds quite a bit of convenience and value.
that's expensive.. but sooo awesome. look forward to your full review. and thank you for not being one of those people who do a review about something a day after getting it. this is one of the reasons you are among my favorite motovlogger.
I'd like to see the visor become the actual display. And what's the battery life on it? That's probably a big concern for people who like to do long rides, batteries are heavy too.
Thanks for the review chase I've been waiting for more info on the AR-1. First of i'm all for this lid the only minor thing that worries me is that riders may end up depending on that rear view camera and getting complacent but that is no fault of the AR-1 I guess. Looking forward to more info bud.
Thanks for the review. You reminded us that you'd had the helmet for 48 hours... like 48 times. haha. 48 hours is the same as two days, I think. So, if you had alternated between "48 hours" and "2 days" and "a short time" it would've been much more palatable to the ear. You made me want to go look up the price tag for the helmet. But, it would've been cool if you'd thrown the MSRP in a title overlay. Anyway, I've been watching your clips for a while now. Love 'em. Good job.
I've been wanting this helmet ever since I heard of it but you must have ordered very early on since I know there are a lot of people still waiting for theirs. I might buy one in the coming year but not sure yet.
Is the visor anti-fog? Pin lock? What happens when a component fails like a speaker? Turn in whole helmet for warranty or remove component yourself? What if battery leaks, explodes or catches fire? Is it snell rated? Does it have rider to rider comms? Is it compatible with other brands like snea?
got to try one on when they were visiting. Liked the design but was a little sad that they hadn't used a smaller shell for Xs sizes so us tiny people don't quite feel like bobble head. Also a little sad they didn't do a heads up display on the visor itself. Still a great looking product. Great rewiew!
This is hands down the best review video you've put out to date. Don't think I'll be buying one because money.... But it was nice to actually see a full run down of the helmet.
Chase, I've got to say, as a heavier guy, I am extremely proud of where you've gotten with your weight loss! You were my inspiration in me and my girlfriend starting to eat healthier and be more active. Stay awesome and ride safe, brother!
You definitely got my attention with this first impressions review. I have been interested in this helmet and one of two others that have similar promises of expanded/rear view. I look forward to your further reviews. I did subscribe so I can see more about it. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Great impression video dude. One thing that I wish the helmet had (for the price especially), would be an integrated MicroUSB port in the back of the hemet. It might be a really small detail, and in the long-run, not really important, but it's the small things that make a huge difference. The external hanging wire looks clunky and not too well thought out, and having a streamlined profile with an integrated port would make a huge difference aesthetically. Just my two cents.
Though way too much for me, I think it's worth the money alone to have a rear view camera, I think that will be invaluable. 5:37 - time to fix that light!
awesome helmet also at 5:42 when the bine was coming around, is you turn signal wired to your headlight? I saw an orange blinking light so i was a bit curious.
Im subscribing now for full review. One thing I hesitate buying this helmet is quality of the HUD. I hope you can show us how it looks like when you actually see it.
Thank you CTW for the first 48 hour impressions. I will say the visor is neat for sure. What I can say is even if Skully can't kick this off right by leaving customers waiting for their products, these ideologies will go into future helmets. I can see the big names coming out with their own versions as soon as this actually hits the market. They can benefit with less R&D based upon the likes and dislikes of the AR-1 users. '
I worked with a computer engineer and a software guy and developed my own version of a Skully. Now it's obviously not a finished product but it shows the screen of my phone, and it has video switching to show a rear view camera that's under the tail of my bike so I know what is around me at all times. The camera sends it wirelessly to the helmet with a simple 2.4ghz sender/receiver. I basically hacked movie glasses to make it. I'm trying to make it better. If I get backing you're looking at like $250 and fits any helmet. Can be controlled a bunch of ways. Super straightforward so if anyone wants to help me let me know. Not with money but actual knowledge, etc.
I think they should make it fully customizable, like you should be able to put like Bluetooth speakers in it and a mic for your gopro if you want. but it looks like an awsome helmet hope you enjoy it!
I've been following them ever since they talked about making those helmets, amazing product , really useful. Wish they were alittle cheaper 😭 and thanks for the quick "review" chase 👍🏼
That's amazing that you got to try one of those! They're not for me though, as I ride to get away from all the technology and hassle of every day life.
awesome review of the Skully Smart Helmet +chaseontwowheels, I think the helmet is awesome but a little pricey, I especially like the fact that they have a visor that changes color with light, and the rear view cam, awesome piece of tech !!!
love how they are trying to promote their helmet as "making things safer" while I'm almost sure the opposite will be the case. Connecting smartphones, listening to music - these are the things which send chills up and down my spine. Distracted cagers are my biggest safety concern out on the roads. So I REALLY don't like the idea of distracted bikers. The helmet's not at fault obviously but still it's an invitation to get distracted in my opinion. Thanks for the informative video
In 1994, I had a colleague that paid about $5,000 for a then, top of the line, mac laptop. The price on technology such as that in these helmets, will go down, eventually way down, especially when other helmet manufacturers begin implementing their version of it. The "auto-pilot" feature that is built into the latest ~$130k Tesla S's (which is pretty blow-mind already) is supposedly going to be on their Model X next year, which w/ gov't incentives is supposed to be as low as $22k ($35k MSRP - up to $13k incentives/rebates). I'm right there with you guys saying the one-impact-and-it's-now-worthless issue isn't very appealing (though that's true w/ any helmet, high or low end). Maybe there could be some modularity eventually -- being able to recover the camera, black box (processor) and heads up display projector parts in the event of an impact crash. Hmm, I wonder if a radar detector option will be offered at some point (and a laser blaster, ...).
8:34 Upper right corner he made a funny.
I didn't even notice. Too upset by my cheap helmetXD

Helmet looks fire. Except for the 1500 doll hair price tag.
+bakerXderek sup br0
+bakerXderek CHEAAAAAAAAAAAH
+bakerXderek the helmet looks… REEEEEEEEEALL GOOD 👌
+bakerXderek Pre-orders were like $1700 in the first couple months of development.
If I had the funds I'd definitely buy one of these. *looks at my cheap BiLT helmet* If only I had the funds....

Agreeable

Would you buy the Skully at the $1,500 price point? Would you recommend others to buy the first gen model? Is it SNELL and DOT rated at that cost?
He's waiting for the review to go over these things I think
Glad to see these things making their way into the wild. I've been looking into it for a bit now and I hadn't seen much recent info. Thanks for the impressions, Chase!
Love the edit *science and magic*
Chin skirts are a MUST for a helmet for me at this point. Not just for cold day, but they do wonders for minimizing turbulence inside the helmet.
how fast does the visor turn clear/dark/clear? can you show that in your full review pls

@chaseontwowheels hey, have you gotten the mohawk camera thing to review yet?
+tacos731 Not yet but very soon.
thanks!
+chaseontwowheels i want a skully but that price tag is a bit high lmfao would be nice though i like how the windscreen changes in daylight and night
+Anthony Cruz me too
+tacos731 They just announced ANOTHER delay. WTF???
The rear wing/fin actually improves laminar flow and decreases boundary layer separation, which reduces drag.
+Mevlinous Those are a load of words I don't understand, but I'll take your word on it.
+chaseontwowheels in other words, it improves overall helmet aerodynamics.
I feel the spoiler is a little high up and will cause drag when tucked on a sports bike, surely a spoiler in the position of that on the agv corsa/pista would be more suited
I honestly wish they would have created a retro-fit to any helmet instead of creating a whole new helmet
+downshift83 I thought so as well man. I will say after riding with a system that one single company had their hands on I think it creates a much more designed experience over a company just making some thing to tac onto a regular helmet.
+downshift83 true story...and they need to mke a motovlog edition with gopro connections and shiet
+downshift83 I feel like it would have been really difficult to do that without seriously compromising the display based on visors of different shapes & levels of optical correctness. +downshift83 I agree. That would be an awesome product :D ....... Probably cheaper as well :D
+downshift83 same! :P
You can also look at the tac that comes stock with the bike to see how fast you are going.. " MIND BLOWN "
I think I'd invest that $1500 into a full exhaust system XD is it snell approved for the racetrack?
Very excited about this, hoping Skully are going to send one to me also for review!
Cant wait to see your full review ..... :D .... and hope ya get to give one away :D ......... I want :D

Funny thing is we are the 1st generation to have this thus the guinea pigs. Its only gonna get better and cheaper with a little time.
+ghostanime84 ikr the first cell phone was a briefcase and only rich assholes could afford it, now people without running water have em lmao
The rear camera and navigation / phone sounds really useful ! Definitely the future of helmet architecture.
Little that he knows, the helmet company went bankruptcy..
I'd wait for the gen II or III to see what they improve upon hopefully cooler tech and lower price.
Shape of it looks pretty bad ass while riding

Are the batteries easily replaceable or have they been tested as far as how long they last etc? And finally, I ride a GSXR 600 and have a growing youtube channel. I'd love to get my hands on one of these to do a review/initial impressions myself. Feel free to shoot me an email if that's something that could happen in the future. JaretCampisi@gmail.com
That USB dongle needs to be integrated into the shell with a waterproof rubber plug.
$1500 it better not be a cheap helmet... It better be a Shoei or Arai or AGV with all that tech stuff added.
That visor I believe is actually electrochromatic meaning you should be able to turn it all clear with a button push in case of a tunnel or bridge.
$1500 though. "cheap helmet" Id rather just turn around to see whats behind me
People are lazy haha
i have a photocromathic visor on my bell and thats the only reason i have not changed helmet brands when getting a new helmet, transition technology is just awesome
"It will suck that thing Dry"-chaseontwowheels 2016
thanks for an awesome first impressions video, i've been wondering for a while to see how this helmet will pan out especially after seeing the delays in release. As far as your cable problem you could potentially use a" Adjustable Clamp Black, Wire, Adhesive Backed" to help give it a home. Would love to own one sometime, love the video and the helmet!
CHASE WITHOUT A HELMET?? HOW LONG HAVE I BEEN GONE??
there are lots of more reviews he made without helmet tho..
Good job Chase as always! I hope you get to do a give away because that's probably my only chance of ever owning one. That price tag is a little hard to swallow with 3 little ones at home! I love the look and the concept behind it. Definetly looking forward to the big review.
It's still a crappy polycarbonate shell. Bounce it once and it's $1500 down the tubes.
+Grizz Axxemann bounce any helmet once and its done.
Already in the process of buying one. Thank you for the first look brother.
I'll NEVER buy a helmet that costs $1,500! Thanks BUT no thanks.
If this helmet was made of carbon like the AGV Pista GP($1400) then I honestly would
Sounds like a badass helment! Having that HUD would be amazing for riding in a city. Looking forward to your full review of it.
Awesome first impressions video... better than a lot of "full reviews" out there on other products you see.
$1500 is a lot of money but it's cool to see a lot of the gadgets that we traditionally attach to our motorcycle being retrofitted into a helmet (e.g. Sena 10C being a camera and bluetooth headset in one.).
*not a software issue, accurate location details eat up phone battery like crazy, it's really hard for any program to get around that.
***** Derp, I didn't think about the visor being up. Thanks for the reply.
Thanks for the mini heads up review. Can't wait for the full review.
Chase! I can say this is one of your most professional videos! loved it man. Thumbs up, Favorite, and a share!
Looks promising Chase!
Thanks for the awesome and honest 1st impressions review!
It'll be interesting to see how it does in the rain and high humidity on a hot day.
Though way too much for me, I think it's worth the money alone to have a rear view camera, I think that will be invaluable.
5:37 - time to fix that light!
Ha! I didn't even notice that. Nice eye
Thanks for your time bro. Always enjoy your videos Chase. Ride Safe Man!!!
always quality videos, gotta love chase's honesty
awesome helmet also at 5:42 when the bine was coming around, is you turn signal wired to your headlight? I saw an orange blinking light so i was a bit curious.
Keen to see the actual review mate. It is an interesting concept. Im sure the 2nd and 3rd generations will be much, much better.
Not with money but actual knowledge, etc.
the white helmet looks pretty good with holly's current fairings!
I am officially one step closer to being Iron Man! Now if I can just get the rest of that suit...
Wow, what a great combination of tech in a helmet. If they find a way to shoehorn a 4k camera in the front I would be sold
I've been wanting one of those for so damn long! to finally see it in action
awesome review of the Skully Smart Helmet +chaseontwowheels, I think the helmet is awesome but a little pricey, I especially like the fact that they have a visor that changes color with light, and the rear view cam, awesome piece of tech !!!
love how they are trying to promote their helmet as "making things safer" while I'm almost sure the opposite will be the case.
Thanks for the informative video
the BK MOTO angel eyes.. did one go out during your turn at 5:41 ?
Great first impressions. The ads for this thing see all over my fb lol. Glad to see its pretty good. Still gonna have to wait for the price to drop.
Chase, it would be awesome if you can manage to demonstrate the informations on hud in your future full review
