How great would it be to see Juan take delivery of the first kit and do a series on its construction from uncrating to first flight/sign off test hours? Special guest appearances of Pete the assistant and D. Gryder providing in depth coverage of the items of concern, and more importantly, the number of tacos missing throughout the area. Do it Brownie!
@@michaelmartinez1345 Pretty sure that when Juan said 'Pop Rivets' it was shorthand for 'Cherry Max' - the Cherry Max are every it as strong as a bucked rivet, and way stronger than an incorrectly bucked rivet by an amateur.
An up close and personal look at the RV-15. Just what I’ve been looking for. I imagine this one design precipitating a whole cottage industry of aftermarket STOL mods like wingtips, cuffs and vortex generators for an already STOL airframe.
Hi, Juan, thanks for showing us this gorgeous airplane. I have a feeling that it may become kind of a mini Beaver, even though it is supposed to be home built. God Bless and stay safe.
Thanks Juan! That was a really great walk through of the Vans aircraft I wanted 10 years ago. But better late than never, this aircraft is going to put a huge smile on the faces of a lot of pilots. I do love that the Johnson Bar is located up high - in my 172B it's on the floor witch is distracting to operate.
With pop rivets this will be a very fast build time like their RV12. This will be such a popular plane it will out sell all the RV models. Vans has come a long way since the RV-4 I help in building back in the day over 40 years ago. Back then you did just about everything and the build hours were very long. I want one when they are taking orders.
You sound like an experienced builder, so maybe you can answer a question. Could bucked rivets or whatever the proper terminology is, be used instead of pop rivets when building one of these?
Thanks Juan. Very helpful and happy to start getting some real numbers. This, not surprisingly, seems very well positioned to dominate the market space. The name and support behind it alone will tip many folks on the fence of their build selection. For some it'll be aluminum versus fabric. I had 2 competitors in mind, but this blows them away. Only thing on my personal list that leads this one would be the Bearhawk model 5 which is apples and oranges. Totally different planes, missions and profiles. Still, this could accommodate most missions and widen the gap needed between my toy and my transportation. Interesting. Ugh, with the 1 year expectation was 'we'll take your money today and delivery in Q4' :)
Your STOL presentation on Thursday Evening came through loud and clear. The best video presentation since your first at Sun & Fun. Glad to see the EAA video team stepped up to the plate with better camera work. Congratulations on a spectacular performance! Next it would be good to show a little more of you announcing.
Nice bird! Thanks for showing us. I like everything I see, so far. Saw another pic without lower cowl, and port side between engine and firewall were three upright cylindrical appearing 'tubes'. Curious what those are.
A few years ago C W Lemoine was looking at buying a Van's aircraft but I guess decided not to. He posted a video where he went and looked at the aircraft and also talked to a representative.
I've worked on a variety of Helios, PC-6's, and even a Do-27 in the mix. It looks like the team behind the 15 clearly understands bush aviation - not just the STOL performance, but the necessity for easy field maintenance as well. The Helio and Do-27's are cool with their LE slats and other STOL devices but from an mx perspective it can get very involved. Good to see this plane focuses on operational simplicity - the truth is most RV builders aren't gonna be too keen on doing 50-hour inspections and following ICA's to the letter. Of course, since it's an EAB, it's only a matter of time for those that *are* willing to be more involved with their airplanes to add aftermarket devices! And I'd love to see that too - I can already see the VG's, fairing mods, and bellypods coming!
Yeah, the extra fuel burn wouldn't discourage many from such a huge upgrade in load and interior size. I am sure the stall speed will be fairly close as well. If both can operate on a 400ft strip.... we have a winner here
I like the folded rudder trailing edge over the riveted 3 piece style that’s on the -7, -10, and the -14.. that folded style feels much nicer. The riveted rudder is too stiff.
What a nice looking aircraft! Great to see some more competition in the off-field STOL arena. Especially a Vans - they've got some top notch stuff! I'd want to leave it unpainted like this - looks great I think. I suppose it would be a chore polishing all that real estate, though. Shocked at the price! I'd have figured at least double that in today's world. I just paid over $310 for THREE hydraulic hoses for my backhoe today! OUCH!! I looked for the 24k gold lining, but alas ... 😁
Would using clear ceramic coating on the beautiful aluminum surfaces protect the surfaces for 3 to 6 months at a time? I'd like the low drag that would provide.

Is that anti servo tab on the stabilator? Are they using steel core or hallow rivets? Think of the corrosion factor especially if it goes on floats. They better have a inspection panel in the floor under your feet for the shock absorbers there
2+2 seating is a term used by Glasair for the "Sportsman 2+2". Seating is side by side and back to back, 4 adult seating. Great plane also. I have the Carbon/quick build kit. Not finished yet unfortunately.
It's easy to get caught up in all the hype but no single airplane does everything. The good news is that there is a lot of variety out there. The trick is to think very carefully about the kind of flying you will do regularly, not the flight that would be really cool to do if you had the chance. In other words, spend wisely and borrow your buddy's plane for that bucket list item!😄
And to add to your reply, not a lot of people know how to hard rivet correctly and may not have the inclination to learn nor the time. It opens the build to a larger group of people I think.
Adding on to what people are saying here already, pop rivets can be easily done with one person. Especially for fuselage skinning that is generally difficult with the old school method.
Are the RV15 and Kodiak the only planes introduced? is that par for the course or are there normally more planes anounced. I guess there aren't that many new planes popping up in GA.
They wanted their own Draco? :) 50k isn't bad although the engine is 40k+? really not a big fan of kit building, imagine buying bare parts from a car maker and having to do it all yourself. An FAA guy can assess the design and by virtue of practical tests in owner hands it can be fully certified. Kit building is part of the poor state of GA. It's way too cuba. Is the stabilator a complexity risk? seems a little ambitious for a kit.

So could this be a good commuter plane as well as back country? 140knots cruise isn't bad if the fuel consumption isn't massive.

Correct.
This is what Cessna should have built when they were designing/contemplating the 162.
Why? They already have this in the 180, essentially.
180, my thought too.
But make one cheaper, smaller, lighter, for training, maybe with a Rotax. And two persons.
It’s a 170
Does that $50,000 include avionics? All the best from Canada
Less than likely. Usually kit prices don't include avionics, engine, paint and upholstery.
No other kit they sell does. This will be 150k+ USD to build I'd imagine.

So is that spring steel gear painted, polished or Electrolytic plated? If plated, how do they preclude hydrogen embrittlement?
I wondered where my straw hat got to.
Vans jumped on the backcountry bandwagon
Here is my question. Why would anyone use pop rivets? I prefer to do it the old fashioned way with an air hammer and a bucking bar.
Pop rivets are faster and they allow for predrilled holes in the panels.
I would also imagine it's easier to do field repairs with pop rivets if needed. That was the only reason I could come up with.
When the competition in the all aluminum backcountry kit plane market are using blind rivets, you probably feel you kind of have to.
