I have the Rail 9.7 and love it.
After upgrading the brakes and fork I’m looking at some options for upgrading the rear shock. Still haven’t decided between coil and air.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the Cane Creek DBcoil that was mentioned in the video doesn’t come in 230x58.5?
Build it! I just picked up the rail 7. Already thinking of the Zeb and mullet. Thanks for the inspiration 👍
Have fun! haha I really want to build it but dont have the coin right now... maybe in a few months
looks great, just got my rail 5 couple of weeks ago
Sweet what you going to do first
Good review, I did the same with the base model merida e-one sixty, slowly upgraded over time with parts on sale/special ebay now I have a custom build that's miles cheaper. I'd like to see more reviews of base level bikes rather than the top of the line models no-one can afford.
I personally think its the best way also not to do it straight away do it one bit at a time and see if really the upgrade was worth it.. I did that on the Decoy and I tell you it helped me really understand it..

Your choices are unique also your presentation is creative....!
Thanks mate I try pretty hard on my channel
Really enjoy your reviews on bikes ! 60 years old might be needing one soon! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks Rob love you hear that! What ebike you on?
Sam’s Bikes i dont have one yet but have been watching a lot of reviews on them. Very interesting!🚲 could get out and enjoy the trails more! Little pricey but would be sweet. Got a trail behind the house but try to get out when I can. Ride mainly at Hueston Woods state park in Ohio . Sweet trails!
Rob don’t think just do it!!! Too much fun to be had
Have a older Specialized Enduro back a good old bike!
I’m going to get rid of the CodeR brakes,
Bontrager Tyres and go with your Magura brakes and Schwalbe rubber, on my 2021 Rail 9.8. Great content!
"If you build it they will watch" :) Trek Rail 5... I'm buying one in April or March. How about that 'Mino Link adjustable geometry' too, that rocks!
my mate just bought a 5 and he's going to build it up... going to be sick!!!
@@SamsBikes Yes!
this is such a smart idea. love it! Goooood content!
Thanks Rider... I thought it was possible and it is.. crazy stuff I think about at night haha...
I'm a total Trek fanboy as well. I went with the Rail 9.7 and then customized it from there. Pretty much did the same upgrades as you mentioned.
However, be aware that you can't use the Renthal stem because of the Knock Bloc feature. Already found that out.
The 170mm upgrade is highly recommended. But next time I'm going 180mm.
The mullet is awesome but really slows the bike on the uphill climbs. And you will hit the pedals and bash guard more than with the 29 set up.
I've gone through 13 sets of various tires, and five sets of rims of various configurations and widths.
Let me know if you want more details.
Oh yeah, I've put over 3200 miles, and 400,000 feet of climbing on the bike this season. Yep, you read that correctly.
Hey Howie.... I want to see some photos of this bike haha what a beast..samwordley@gmail.com.. I love Trek as well and the rail is a nice nice bike.. Im really tempted to buy it right now I have my house full off test bikes so hard to find the room but I will.. what rims and tires your running now? im rocking DTswiss FR560 and eddy current totally amazing I think
@@SamsBikes I sent you an email. Let me know if you got it.
Chucked the Eddy Current on my reign e 1 after watching your review, deadset biggest difference to my ride I’ve made.
I’m 95kg and even with 30psi on the dhr original tyres they were squirming around everywhere. Now 24 psi and rock solid.
Nice work mate👍
that's so great to hear mate... I love my Eddys im testing the new big Betty and Marry with the DH casing on my new bike cant wait. yea im 85 running 19 front 23 back
nice one - I have the same bike and am also a heavy weight. I'll defos give this a try once I have gone through the dhr
Chicken Lips do it mate, massive difference.
which size did you go for mate? the 2.8 or 2.6? Would the 2.8 fit?
I would go 2.6 but yes 2.8 will fit if you go 2.8 put some cushcore in will stop the rebound from the tire
I love my Rail 5. My first changes where a shorter Stem, a Nukeproof HZN 35 mm. (You need an adapter to make the knock block work). Raceface Atlas 785mm bar. Raceface Chester pedals. Ergon SM Ebike sadle. And finally, Ergon Fat Grips. As for tires, I liked the feel of the stock rubber, but went tubeless. Would like to change the shocks when the time comes to service them. Would love for you to go with the. build.
Hey Niko sounds like a sweet rig... I really want to buy the rail lets see if I can make it happen.
Niko Reyes,what’s a knock block. ?
59trevski its on Trek's Head tube that prevents your forks and bars hitting the frame. Also prevents the cable pulls.
Sam you’ve read my mind buddy🤯. I picked up my (1st Trek) Rail 5 a couple of weeks ago with the intention of swapping out the parts you’ve mentioned. There was pretty much zero stock options left on other models and I think I got the only sized medium 2021 my lbs had in stock. Anyway, wow, what a bike, when I picked the bike up I immediately thought of upgrades, but after riding this absolute charger I am in no rush to swap out the parts. I’m new to eebs but not MTBs. This bike has blown my mind, wether it’s the bike or the extra confidence it gives me, it is fast, agile and stable in the air. I’ve come from a 26” orange 5 with fox coil dhx and 36, hope/Mavic, saint/xt minions etc... and I thought after reading reviews I’d maybe struggle with the 29ers, tbh I don’t know what people are talking about, I can turn this bike with no struggles, really thread the needle down any trail I can find and I can jump it higher and further than my other bike. It’s amazing and I’m constantly waiting for my mates (Whyte e150rs and Haibike flyon) at the bottom of the trail beating bikes that cost a considerable amount more. The budget suspension does its job really well and I reckon for the majority of riders it will be excellent. For me, and the speed it’s propelling me at, I think a stiffer fork and stronger back wheel will be my first upgrades, but as said, I’m in no rush to do this. Buy this bike Sam, you won’t regret it mate 🤙
@samsbikes been enjoying watching your channel a few months now, keep up the good work 😎
wow.... I need one now, Im trying to get a test ride on one... and I personally would leave It for a month or so and upgrade when I had the money and that way I can see if it was worth the upgrade or not... glad you hear your loving the bike.. and thanks for the kind words about the Channel its my baby..
@@SamsBikes would love for you to do a review if you do =) I hope they are back in stock soon though, I cannot find an M/L anywhere in Switzerland
I want to see this bike, more people need to like this video
Good project, hard to win against an online vendor with their buying power but this is a good way to get into an expensive sector of mountain biking and slowly improve it.
Thanks 😊 rider I did my best I think they would both fly down the mountain ⛰
Maybe someone has already pointed this out but an overlooked point to mentions is that you can sell the other parts which would close the overspend gap.
yep true but very hard to see these kinda of parts I would probably just keep them as a spare and when selling the bike put them back on.
What about a direct comparison between a stock 2021 Trek Rail 9.8XT and a stock YT Decoy Pro Race? Both retailing for NZ$11,999.00, I'm considering both :-)
Can you reach out to local riders and see what the support is like in NZ for YT?! Being so far away I might go the trek just for bike shop support!
I think you’ll find the longest Cane Creek shock is 216mm and the shock length on the Rail is 230mm. I’m going DHX2 for mine. The Bontrager wheels are very good. I’d keep them and spend the money on Cushcore
oh really man that sucks... yep the DHX2 is a great option yea defo cushcore is a good idea,..
180mm Zeb and Rev grips.Trek 👍🏿. I put 180mm Zeb on my Haibike 2.0 and Couldn’t be happier!
Sweet bro! Send us a photo!
Just a small thing , the rockshox super deluxe ultimate with the megnegg, is in a completely different league to the basic deluxe , but still with you going for the coil
Thanks for the info!
What would you upgrade on the 2021 Trek Rail 7? I ordered one
start with brakes and tries and then suspension if you think it needs it
Also depends on the terrain you are riding right.
DRAW MY EWHIP Did I miss a weight comparison?Good vid will be interesting to see and hear the difference between both rides.Im interested in the Magura upgrade what to do it myself.Anyone ride on the MT5E’s?
Thanks.... the weight would be pretty similar I think the decoy lighter but remember all ebikes should be show weights with no tires or DH casing tires. if you ride hard you need DH casings tires. Ill let you know soon on the brakes.,
interesting idea and its going to be tough to compete with the mail order prices .IMHO its all about compromise amd swap outs. on advice from my LBS in Scotland im going for the trek rail 7 upgrading the fork to 170 debonair and charger damper 2.1 . other than that its pretty sorted . no point going for high end alloy drive trains, keep the drive train low end steel and cheap as e bikes absolutly destroy drive trains
thanks for watching and good luck with the Trek 7 send us a photo once you have it.. nice looking bike.. totally agree the cheapest drive train is the best idea so you can replace them...
I also ride a Rail7, I recently got the Rock Shox
Charger 2.1 Upgrade Kit + RockShox DebonAir Upgrade Kit C1 made at the Yari. The rail drives so wonderfully!
Change the forks to Marzzochi Z1 Bombers with a coil upgrade
🤙
maybe.... I do like red
Sam’s Bikes, the bombers have rave reviews especially with the coil upgrade, nice simple set up as well.
I have the purple rail 5 and upgraded the brakes ,apex stem helps but you need a knock block clamp and a must dmr vaults I want the Zeb's next trying my best to kill the 35 forks but they are alright for now 🙃 draw my ewhip
thanks Rider... how are the 35s? im thinking of buying the Trek and doing the upgrades slowly and see what is really worth doing or not..
Hiya the 35s are actually alright lot better than I thought after reading limited reviews 👍
Yea I actually didn’t mind the Yars better with the charger 2.1 but
Hi Sam i have the Rail 9.8 with the following upgrades, Fox 38, dhx2, transfer sest post, Code RSC brakes, hope pro4hubs on carbon rims with cushcore. Kiox controller, fork is running at 180 and is mint in al but very tight conditions. Bosch motor is awesome especially with the upgrade. Can send 📸
Sounds great please send me a photo at instagram or samwordley@gmail.com
When are you playing to do the review on the Magura MT5’s really interested in how’s these perform as looking to upgrade my Levo brakes.
I’m waiting for my new bike which should be here in 3-5 weeks and I’ll be testing the mt5 220 rotors and the new dh casing magic marry! Soon rider soon this covid has delayed my bike : f
Sam’s Bikes I may just bite the bullet then keep up the great videos.
What about weight ? 136 kg original complete the same? Weight difference between customized and shopbike?
the weight would be a little more but nothing crazy maybe 2kg more but remember any ebike needs strong tires and thats most of the extra weight.
@@SamsBikes Thx 4 answering. For me personally these 2 kg make be a difference because the Trek has a total weight of 136kg. My own weight is between 109 and 111kg. So it would be possible that i get out of the warranty.
how about focus sam2 , ohlins rear shock , assegai front and magic mary rear
good call
Be good to see.. parts individually are dear!
Yes they are but its a top top spec bike for 7000 not that bad really
Here's my modified Rail 5. Under 10k total investment. Upgrades include Kiox, code rsc 220mm 4pots, RS reactive w/ MegNeg, Fox 38 170mm, Reverb dropper, AXS wireless derailleur, Pirreli emtb s rear, Maxis dhf front, and some other odds and ends.
Hi was the kiox a worthy upgrade 👍
How much did the Kiox upgrade cost, if you don’t mind me asking!
WOW can you send me some photos? samwordley@gmail.com your bike sounds epic.. thanks for watching rider.
@@shiftymuckers6627 I own a Trek Rail 9.8 2020 model. It came with the purion display which is ugly. Directly upgraded to the kiox when I bought the bike and it was only €100,- extra.
@@emmagirlgamer9480 for me it is. The controller is smaller on the bars, which is easier to handle. Also the display is very bright and gives some more info
My buddy just got a Rail 5. Great looking bike but fit definitely needs some upgrades. I sent him this video
thanks Rider.... I hope you mate loves it..
Red Bombers set off the wheel decals grips and pedals 🤔🤙
Not a bad idea
I also would change sram sx. I already have problems with sram gx. The first couple of rides it will be fine, but after that the problems start. It annoys me very much.
maybe you have had bad luck I find SX totally fine
I would run an XM 521 on the rear 32 hole brass nipples , slightly wider equally as good as the 570 if you manage pressure correctly.
Id run a FOX 36 for the weight advantage. Going from a 36 to a 38 is not like going from a 36 to a 40 . I don't think there is enough in it for the weight penalty .
I would run the float X on the rear , this will enable better mid stroke tune with the internal bands, that may be very impotent running the bike mullet for ride hight .
Brakes , codes RSC 220 f&R . Far easier parts availability , cheeper parts, easy bleed, power and modulation off the charts .
Frame , being alloy ,,,, polish it for weight reduction : > .
Sell left over parts and upgrade the drive chain or light weight dropper or carbon cranks : >
oh now your talking.... all good idea I have not run the 38s yet but I did notice alot of flex on my Lyriks under braking.. X2 defo love that shock I think the cane creek with the progressive spring is an interesting idea and amazing reviews on it so I want to try it.. Sorry I cant run Codes in my life I really hate them, when im on the the brakes I want a little more power pull a little nothing pull a little more the bloody wheel locks up.. Shimano XT all the way. thanks for all your ideas I might build this beast..
hi ... can anyone give me a tip for a spring shock absorber for my trek rail 7? thanks from italy
sorry mate I dont get the question ?
Advice rear shock sping for trek rail 7 ?
Surely you'll get a few quid back for the new parts you take off... I think you're going to build that bike 2000 likes or not 🤣
Yea maybe but those parts might be hard to sell.... haha I want to build this bike so bad haha
I think selling those parts could bet you a good amount back. I do this when I buy acoustic bikes and it usually saves me half of the cost.
Like how people don't really pay much attention to details.. you can't really run alternative stems due to knock block, if you do you risk striking forks on frame... Nobody spending that kind of money on a bike would take that kind of risk if they're planning on aggressive.riding.... Also mulleting a bike not designed for it would not only lower the BB... It'd slaken seat tube angle and make the front end more likely to lift on steeper climbs, and steering harder on switchback climbs... you don't need to mullet a bike with 150mm travel, on a dh bike that mulleting has become popular amongst the pros so shorter riders don't tag their rear tyre on their arse... the rear wheel travels 2 inches higher, and the radius of the wheel is 3/4 inch smaller.. your net rear tyre position on this would be 1 and 1/4 inch further from your arse and therefore it is not necessary and you loose the rollover advantage of a 29 wheel... Stop copying blindly and look at the reason things are done and the effects they have!!!
thanks for your thoughts.... I didn't know about the Knock Block well ill leave the stem then... not important really. but for the mullet trust me im pushing the Decoy 29er hard and im tagging my ass all the time and I hate it.. I would defo mullet it.
I am Decoy 100%. I got mine almost a year ago and I have had zero problems. I ride it all over znd in bike parks. YT all the way!🤙
yep I love my Decoy but I did this to see if its possible.. and it is
YT Decoy Pro or Trek Rail 9.7?!
Rail...
Going Mullet on the Rail is a waste of time. As is throwing a Zeb on it. Upgrade the fork internals - MegNeg the rear shock get some decent tyres and shifter / deraileur and other small bits and have fun.
maybe? I think the Zebs are defo worth it and would love to try the mullet but each to their own
@@SamsBikes True, be interesting if you did a back to back comparison with the Mullet vs the 29 rear.
BTW, hows the Decoy 29 going? - looking at the base model myself with a few minor changes. Now riding a Trek Slash which is fun but I also ride the road to trail head and want something that can help me along with the boring parts.
@@pierrebroccoli.9396 hey rider... the 29 decoy is really good for 80% of what I ride not sure which bike I like more both good
Sam what happened with this Trek build ?
if you paying I'll build it hahaha... I might still build one but don't have any money right now!
I like the Trek 5.
me too great geo numbers
130mm dropper, you should change this to a longer too
Yep it was on the list but ran out of money!
Sam’s Bikes just out of curiosity, i suppose you are selling the parts you are replacing ? That should go back to the budget ?
Yep but those parts might be hard to sell! But a good idea
Doesn't the Trek 5 have a smaller battery compared to the 7 and 9?
they do two trek 5 one with 500 and the other with 625!
Well did you buy it?
No haha I didn’t get the likes
@@SamsBikes see what you mean, it would have been a good bike but the colour isn't everyone's cup of tea but a great base to start from.
I gotta say the decoy will have better resale value, any upgrades are pretty much lost money as you'll still have a bottom of the range Trek no matter what the components?
PS I run the MT5's on all my bikes, best bang for buck out there. So powerful and ever so good modulation.
Yep you have a point there! I really can’t wait to try the mt5s I even have the new bruni levers!
@@SamsBikes sweet! Make sure you pimp the caliper inserts (nick some nail varnish if you have to ;) gotta match the frame )
Wait what... are you sure you can run 27.5 on the rail??? (This was holding me back from getting the rail)
Yes 100% sure you can do it....
Sam’s Bikes ..sweet and bb won’t be too low. And just realized the rail 5 is only 500wh 😬
Yep I know you can go the rail 7 base and then not change the forks just upgrade to charger 2.1
@@bpet2237 the Trek Rail has a flip chip. You can flip it to increase bb. I ride it with 29er setup and already find it low.
@@bpet2237 No my rail 5 is a 625 ah , it's just a few hundred more expensive
DRAW MY EWHIP!
Trek bikes have great battery integration. It's a shame that they are so expensive with proper suspension. And that Bosh display is fugly. :D
I really depends on what you want but the base bike will be fine with the stock suspension for normal riding if you really want to ride it hard then you will need to upgrade it.
YT USA is a 40min drive from my house. So it’s my local bike shop! YT for the win! :-) Both bikes look great. I’ve heard the Bosch Gen 4 doesn’t feel very good when climbing out of the saddle. That is where the E8000 feels great.

In your comparison the YT is far better "spec". The trek SX and cheap dropper is the minor issue. You do realize the YT ELITE wheels are a $2500 US cost set up . Crank brothers Carbon wheels and I-9 hubs. I have yet to find a rider on the trail that has taken off top of the line fox suspension and switched to rockshock ( if someone here did and wants to sell their fox stuff cheap..PM me). You replaced carbon bars with alum..not equal in price or quality. I agree with buying at the LBS, that said I have a couple friends with E bike issues and even at the local bike shop the repair took several weeks up to a month to get resolved. Buying direct online is the best bang for the buck, the sad truth. You should also point out that the entry level YT bikes are under $5000 US. ..I don't own a YT..Giant E Trance ( decent bike, but like all of them it's not perfect)
all good points Mike and I agree with you Online is the way to go but its still possible to build a similar riding bike from a bike shop... trust me both these bikes would ride really well and when your smashing down DH runs you dont know if you have 2500 of 500 wheels as long as they dont break your happy.. my last 3 bikes have been online but I just wanted to see if it could be done.
Build it and let us see you shred it 😁

Sam, I'm shocked! i thought you were a YT fan forever. Sorry man I'd say the Decoy Elite is in a league of it own. For the price it can't be beaten really. You are comparing an aluminum frame with a carbon frame and budget alloy wheels with Crankbrother Synthesis carbon matched wheels. These are $1800 USD alone. Good luck bro but sorry you'll have to try harder to get my vote. You should have done the same project to the Decoy 29.
Mate, I’ll always be a massive fan of YT and Trek and Specialized and any brand than makes sick ebikes!!!! I agree the elite is a epic build and hard to beat but loads of people don’t like the idea of online so I thought I would try and build a similar bike! I personally think both bike would ride amazing and put a pro on either of them and they are totally race ready.
Sam’s Bikes good points highlighted. Either way I’ll be watching your builds closely. Keep up the interesting videos Sam.
Thanks mate I love how we can chat it out haha ebikes are just great anyway we talk it haha!
I tend to break aluminum frames and the trek build is on expensive aluminum build when you can have stronger carbon for that same price
im not sure Carbon is any stronger could be wrong...
Sam’s Bikes aluminum breaks at the welds carbon don’t have any welds. Carbon just doesn’t like impact to sharp rocks lol

I was looking at the Cane Creek rear Coil shock, and they don't show it for this size, 230 X 57.5, or am I missing something? I would really like to try that shock
Dude I made a mistake they are not making this size right now but I say that will change very soon seeing the rails is very popular!! Sorry try the fox rear shock which is a good option as well
@@SamsBikes I talked to Fox and they recommend the Float X2 over the DHX2, all you have to give them is the width on the upper and lower mounts so the can supply the correct hardware, but I did find out the width on the lower mount, it's 40mm, and the upper , from my measurements are 57mm
I did some more research on the best shock for this project and came up with this, and I came in contact with someone like me who was looking for a better rear shock for the Rail 7. He said that the ROCKSHOX Super Delux Ultimate part #00.4118.306.003 works amazing over the stock one. I ordered it along with the Megneg can.
