05-01-2024 Shields - Utica, KS - Landspout Tornado - Tornado Warned Supercell - Dusty Inflow

Throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours of 5-1-24, a discrete supercell fired on the triple point and moved along a warm front. Multiple funnels and a couple of tornadoes were reported. The storm was also reported to have produced up to 4.5" hail. A destructive severe thunderstorm warning was issued, given the hail size. Inflow winds around 30-40mph were also reported as a large amount of dust was observed flying into the rotating storm's updraft base.

It does seem that way, doesn’t it. With huge hail and lightning.

This clip definitely answered the question I’ve had about whether these storms have significant lightning. News reports now are about wind damage but I’ll bet in six months we’ll start to hear about rising insurance claims for fried electronics.

There have been plenty of smaller weaker tornadoes. Bit big destructive ones just get more attention.
