In this video we check out a USB-C female to USB-A male adapter. This isn't the normal way your want to convert your cables, but what it allows you to do it use USB-C cables with old USB-A ports.

For those who may have asked months prior, these "USB-C" adapters do not work with your USB-C dock stations, unfortunately. I feel like I wasted my money a bit because I thought these would properly work well with my non-USB-C laptop and work efficiently as any other USB port on my laptop. Sorry to inform those that may have wished the same thing. :(
I wish I knew about this before purchasing. I've also purchased a hub with lots of ports ( 4 USB slots, 3.5mm jack, and more), however, with USB-C connector to the computer, so I ordered an adapter (USB-C to USB 3 for the computer's end), unfortunately, same with yours, my laptop only has HDMI and USB slots. I'm still waiting for the orders to arrive as of this moment.
So do I get this right? I wanted to buy a drawing tablet which has a display and comes with an usb-c cable to power the tablet and shows the notebook screen (do you see what you draw). Even if I buy the adapter and plug it at the usb 3.0 port of my notebook, it would only give power but not the picture since the usb 3.0 inside the notebook is not made to transfer both? So instead I have to use an 3 in 1 cable with hdmi for the picture, usb to connect the devices and a power cable?
@@acrack_ontitan I don't think that would work as the notebook screen is not solely designed to display images unlike monitors. Also, in my humble opinion, notebook screen sizes are not that a big of a difference compared to a tablet (except for an ipad mini, I guess). And so, I think, there's no point of displaying it on a notebook screen, unless it has, at least, 19 inch display. My adapter (Male USB 3.0 to Female USB-C) partly worked plugging to a USB-C Dock (9-in-1: 3 USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI, 3.5mm, PD, SD Cards), but HDMI didn't work, I guess it needs the stock USB-C directly plugged in to a computer or laptop, unfortunately, my laptop doesn't have a USB-C port that's why I need the adapter.
I was about to buy adapter if I didn't read this first, thanks...so is there anyway to add a USB C port to desktop instead so my dock station HDMI connections will work?
@@mroctober3583 having the same question around here too. Did you find a way?
Just got my wife a new Apple Watch 8 for Christmas and the special Mag cable to charge the watch is unfortunately USB-C, and naturally ALL our chargers are USB -A, so this adapter is EXACTLY what we need.
I ended up buying a USB-C cable by accident from Apple from their website that works nicely with my Mac because it has that kind of port in the back so I could have a dedicated Iphone or keyboard charger, but if I ever need to replace my USB-A cord in my vehicle I will need to get that USB-C to USB-A adapter. Now I know which one to get! Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I just got a new Mac Mini and was in bad need of one more port to plug in my external CD/DVD player. I followed your link and bought this item. Thank you once again for posting this.
Exactly what I need. I just got an iPhone 13 mini. The outlets on the surge protector near me are all filled except for the USB ports. This converter will do the trick just fine
Could you please advice me if a USB 3.1 port can support a USB-C wireless microphone?
I would like to use an adapter to connect it to the USB port on my Windows laptop
so I can start using the wireless mic, which has a USB-C plug. thank you for your advice
Question.
SO... if I have an Early 2015 MacBook Air with out the USB C connection. Do they make USB to USB C cables or an adapter so that I can hook up a dock with multiple AV connections? I have the older model and I would really like to find a hyper drive or some sort of option to have those multiple connections.
I have a 2011 Mac book air with no usb-c connection, i too am looking for the appropriate adapter/dock and I am very new to all this and very confused!
Please help!
A USB-A port on your computer could supply up to 100mA. A USB-C, up to 1.5A. Depending on the power drawn by the device, it may or may not work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Low-power_and_high-power_devices
So what would you recommend for something like a thunderbolt 3 cable
Thank you. This is exactly what I need to download photos from my USB-C phone cable to my laptop.
Thank you for the video. Besides hard drive do you think that I could use a docking station?
I have a Macbook 2015 (without USB C) and Windows PC and I was thinking to buy this docking station that is selling in the market, but all of them are Type C.
Do you think that I could adapt it to USB and use in Both PC and MAC with this adapter?
@@jacekmoron Czesc Jacek. I haven´t tried that yet
Any updates? Did it work?
I am searching for a solution to use with a Dell Dock also (to use video, network mouse etc .. )
Did it work for you ?
Thanks
Will this connect in my car so I can use usb-c for faster charging and allow me to play over Apple play?
Would this support dock with hdmi and vga?

Great video. Question: Will that adapter work with the Logitech Streamcam Plus webcam?
I have the same question - how can I get the Streamcam with USB-C cable hardwired into it to work with a USB A socket on my laptop?
Just been doing more research and looks like USB 2.0 is limited to 720p/30fps, so any webcams which say they are 1080p/60fps are being compressed by a chip in the webcam if they go into a USB 2.0 host computer. 1080p/30 is just not possible for a USB 2.0 webcam. This might explain why USB-C webcams seem to work better - 10 to 20 x more bandwidth over USB-C.
Thanks, super useful! Can you add the previous video link in the description?
Would also love to hear your thoughts on how to use existing lightning cables to charge iPhone 15/Pro
Hello, thanks for the video, I have a question for you, I have a dock with male USB C, but my 2017 MacBook Air does not have a type C port, it only has USB A 3.0 and a thunderbolt 2.0. How can I connect it? Is it enough to put an adapter such as USB A male to USB C female and will some features be lost?
may i know if i have a "Dell Dock" wtih a cable of thunderbolt 3, can i use a USB-3 adaptor to connect to my laptop which doesnt have type-c but only USB ??? is this thunderbolt 3 dock work on my USB only laptop by using USB-3 adpator shown in this video?? I just bought a LaCie rugged ssd 2tb that came with a cable that is double sided usb-c and my 2011 MacBook Air laptop does not have an usb-c port/connection… I don’t know what to do, someone please help!!!
Will these adapters work?
Will they damage my devices at all?
I saw a comment saying they could fry devices?!?!
The question I have not gotten answered is will using the adapters on existing USB 3 ports such as on the side of your table, Wall switch outlets, table lamps, vehicles, etc. Will it support and charge the iPhone 11pro+ as quickly
I have existing ones USB 3 in my table lamp, wall sockets, and car couple of which I think would be pricy to switch over to USB but if an adapter works I’d be fine with just installing adapters and leaving them on
So will that adapter allow me to run a USB C audio Interface into a MacBook Pro that doesn't have USB C?
I am also looking for an adapter so I can use my usb-c devices & hard drives with my MacBook Air that has no usb-c port
Could you charge a Chromebook using one if these with the right power brick?
You’ve said for us to ‘contact’ you ‘with any questions’ so my question is;
Qubii Pro to iPad Pro 3rd gen, which cables/adapter/etc might make my Qubii Pro help store properly iPad Pro 3rd gen’s photos please?? Amazon is stumped. I’ve already purchased & returned cables & charging block since I mean to say Amazon’s seller listed improper descriptions [in 2 places] leaving the task stillSTILLstill incomplete.
Thank You!

I just wanted to let you know that your video has been very helpful.
I haven't found any adapters like this that supports hdmi
I agree. I have just begun that quest, but the results have been frustrating. I'm beginning to believe that no such device exists.
Video over USB is an USB-C exclusive feature so it makes sense it doesn't work with a regular USB A connection
Audio however (e.g an aux to usb c adapter) is a different story and can be used like this
Interesting. Eventually I did find a USB-C to USB-A adapter, but not at a computer or electronics store. Instead, I found it at a hardware store!!?
Will this one work with ethernet adapter ? I have one through type c, wanna change for simple usb 🤔
Hi, I have bought my USB c female twice for my Sony alpha a6400 unfortunately it didn't work. It worked for my cellphone but not for my camera. Is there any recommendation please?

Thank you for this video not a lot on this...
Note that these adapters are EXPLICITLY FORBIDDEN by the USB specification. When connected in certain configurations (such as making an A-to-A cable) they can fry your equipment.
The correct way to do this conversion is by getting the correct C-to-A or C-to-whatever cable, or connecting through a legitimate hub.
"USB Type-C receptacle to USB legacy adapters are explicitly not defined or allowed. Such adapters would allow many invalid and potentially unsafe cable connections to be constructed by users."
does that mean the USB C adapter shown in this video is not a good idea and could harm my computer?
@@jamescummings3184 if there are no experiences or reviews there is no way to know
I am new to all of this and very confused… so these little adapters are not safe for my devices?
What is a “legitimate dock” ?
How do I know my dock is legitimate?
like give examples please, or give me brands/companies to shop from.
@@jamescummings3184 Yes, if you use it to make an A-to-A cable or something equivalent.
@@AkunahsDream What do you want to connect to what?
What are you doing step USB-c cable
I bought one of those because I had bought a laptop with usb c (and bought a bunch of usb c accessories), but gave that laptop to my cousin and bought a surface laptop (no usb c lol)
are you still checking this before i go into my question?
Helpful video but pleeeeeeease remove that display changing scial media panel in the background. It disturbs and made me going crazy during watching 😅
