  • How did our greenhouse roofing material hold up to golf ball size hail? I'm no scientist but when I watch hail go through the roof of my old poly carbonate roofing material from the big box stores and wasted an entire growing season. Going through that experience was painful and emotional for our family as we spent a lot of time and pain to build the greenhouse system. So, when an even larger storm comes through and I'm standing inside the greenhouse watching and hearing golf ball size hail bounce off, such a relief goes through my mind! I'm sure you can special order some other poly that might be stronger than fiberglass, however, I'm only speaking from real life experience and what I've witnessed personally. Just want to save someone that grief.

Made by Stabilit, not sure exact name. Roofer said just ask metal place like Mueller for skylight material.

    G'morning, Sir!
We just discovered your channel earlier today. It's great - thank you for sharing!
We're so sorry to hear about the loss of your previous polycarb roofing! :/ When I hear hail start, I feel sick and an overwhelming need to hold on and brace. :/ ;)
So, what exactly is your roofing made from? You mentioned it's fiberglass...? Is it a transparent fiberglass? If you wouldn't mind, and if it isn't too much trouble, would you please provide a link? Thank you for your time and consideration, Sir! We've definitely subscribed! :D

M'Lady's Simple Elegance It's called polylite, but I know there is a variety. I received very little info the roofer gave me the name of the company stabilit. I called and they said Mueller metal was a supplier in Greenville, TX. Roof said it's called skylight material to the guys at Mueller and that's all they could tell him. It's transparent but blocks about 35 percent of light and diffuses the light which has worked great especially during winter with no shade cloth. So far I've been able to relax thru the last 4 hail storms this year, so crazy. Sorry I don't have the specs, Stabilit should be able to help maybe give you a local supplier to pick it up from.

You may not be monitoring this by now but I think you should prepare for much more serious storms coming in the following years, temperatures 30 degrees below average, and winds up to 300 mph. Surface crops are unlikely. Figure out how to get under ground a bit. And plan for long term survival tactics. This should last 50 - 150 years. So creative farming will be crucial to survival. Aquaponics is a strong candidate.

Do you have any links or ideas on how to build storm, hail resistant long lasting greenhouses?

If we had a hail storm the night before there would still be hail around the base of the greenhouse(especially in the shaded side). I'm sorry but i see no evidence that the greenhouse you are showing us was in a hail storm the night before. A nice video would have been first thing in the morning when the hail stones where still present, or to show an angle back at a house or crops where you could see the destruction of the hail to the area surrounding it with the greenhouse in the same shot.

I'm not being paid. Check out my other video when I'm literally standing in the greenhouse during the hail storm...lol. Take care!
