+David Gillooly And thank you David for watching. Capstan tape of aluminum tape works great to keep the heat off the other parts. Nothing I hate more than hunt for flying parts :-) Thanks for watching and glad you stopped in.
Hey Buddy excellent work! Thumps up! Yeah I have seen the other vid with the same issue on 220. Have you ever tried to put a ultra low capacitance transient voltage suppressor array in front of the g1 to protect it from fast transients? Like the GBLC03 that component should be able to eliminate the problem. Off course you have to discuss it with your customer as this modification costs money and can't be done for nothing... All the best my friend 73
+TRXBench Thanks for the kind words Peter. I can not count the times I have repaired these radios. Your suggestion does work. A friend of mine (RIP) came up with this many years ago and tried on a few radios. What he found was the transistor is so wide banded that even the output from it can kill the front end. I been thinking of revisiting this with mine and do a few test. Just no time. Thanks for the info and for stopping by my friend.
Very nice repair. Without schematic this can be a challenge. I see you have a lot of experience with this transceiver. Nice coin Homestead National Monument of American Quarters, damned screensavers hi. I would like to see how you traced the fault. Now you did it on experencience. But still a good job and a satisfied customer. Best 73 until next time.
+FEY I had a friend over with some coins and put them under the scope. It saved the pics so when sitting idle it reverts to them. Nice to see you noticed them. The basic front end on these are fairly simple. I would had loved to shown the tracing of the circuit. But was a bit pressed for time in this video with all the repairs in this week, I been sick for a week and then my brother in law passed. So a lot going on. But to truly follow the signal pass we would need to solder some test wires to the bottom of the board and bring them to the top. This way we would have test points since you can not power the power when lifted. I will make this a priority in future videos and should had really taken the time to explain that. Thanks for your comments my friend.
+The Radio Shop I am very sorry to hear that. My condolences, and i wish you strength to you and your familiy. I am looking forward to see your next fine repair. Best 73
Short answer, no. Although if the signal is strong enough and there is a bit of signal mixing you may be able to pick out something but not common. You would need to move further down in the chain to a mixing or IF stage to really pick up a legible signal.
Ok thanks! Im trying to fix my Stryker 955. One strand of shorted speaker wire killed all my audio. I built an rf af tracer and found a bad TDA2003V. Its an an obsolete part but I found one identical in spec Im waiting on the part now. TDA2003 TO220
Hi, I've been a ham since the mid 1980's. Trying to grasp the electronic concept. The old part had a different number than the new transistor.. How do you know what transistor to use to replace the old one with. I know it may seem a dumb question but I am learning even at 59 years old. 73's DE: N6PGG / 7
Hi and no that is not a dumb question at all. I quickly found that the original part was no longer available. Doing a cross reference I found that the 3SK184(S) was a replacement. A guy named Clif Holland confirmed this also. He is a Kenwood guru.
+DENNIS N Hi Dennis, And thanks for the comment. I stock many parts. Thousands of them. And at times I still do not have the replacement do have to order. The 3SK184(S) can be found by many suppliers
Ok, I have got to get a hot air station and start practicing with it. I have always handed off my SMD work to others. You and Louis Rossmann have pushed me over the edge to try it. How is that station of yours holding up? Would you have selected something else or are you happy with it? Great video!
Sounds good. It is not really that hard. Louis makes it look really easy. I have even learned from him. Hmmm, good question. But this one had held up well. If I had to do it again I probably would buy the same unit.
Hi Kevin. The microscope in this video is the Dino-Lite Premier. It is a USB camera scope and is $250 bucks. Plugs into your usb port on your pc and run the software. The pc has several video output jacks for VGA using a video card. Most big screens today have a VGA input. I also have now a Amscope microscope
Well, after the IFR fix you deserved a relatively easy one! What was the difference between the flux (goopy type) you used to remove the solder and the pen? And for those seriously OCD viewers like me we now know that (1) you have a mustache (you slipped into the camera view for just a moment!) and (2) you're probably in Nebraska somewhere! ;-) 73 - Dino KL0S
+Dino Papas Hi Dino. Good to see you. Yes the IFR was a bit of work. So lets seeFlux. The goopy flux is 88%. 24 grams raw rosin powder with 6 grams alcohol and 2 drops Glycerin. The stuff in the pen was 60% by volume of the same. Yes all homemade flux.(1)And you were right about the mustache. I mostly edit out any part of my face but that one slipped by lol. Don't want to scare off the viewers :/(2) Nope, On the east coast of North Carolina my friend. Thanks for stopping in and commenting Dino :)
+The Radio Shop Buddy, I used to tell what order you're videos were by the "oh. hell" that was on your thumb. Lol! Looked like you had caught a hammer on the thumb nail.
+The Radio Shop Thought the first flux may have been "homebrew"! I have a small can of "Lenk Soldering Paste - Quick Positive Flux" with a price sticker on it of 22 cents that is still almost full after 45 years that is probably somewhat comparable. Use a flux pen as well; stuff in the flux removal pen has an atrocious smell so Isopropyl alcohol is my go to stuff too. CUL.
Do you mean Kaptan tape like this from Monoprice? Sorry, I couldn't understand your accent! LOL The wide Monoprice tape is for 3D printers but I could get some for both uses. I've got a hot air station but haven't tried using it for unsoldering parts yet, I've been using ChipQuick low melting point solder and it works like magic if you can get it on the leads. You put some on to mix with the existing solder on each of the leads then just lift off the part and wipe away the solder. www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=12134
Thank you. That is the issue that most folks cannot grasp. What to charge. If electronic repair is your only source of income, then you cannot work for free. If you are just doing it for a hobby and the fun of it that changes everything. A good price would be $45 plus parts and shipping. Someone like Motorola would charge double that.Hope that helps a bit.
hey my name is kevin and I just got a new job in communications and I have to learn the ifr 1200 communications service monitor do you have any other videos or anything for beginners ???
o ok hmmmm how to use it and understand make a good video that would really help me as a beginner starting out in communications whatever you think would be good for me to learn
I have a instructuional manual for the 1200 monitor but I do better with hands on training like actually watching someone instruct me on it with the instructional manual and a good video it would be really helpfl to me
I just bought a radio shack HTX-10 radio off ebay. I'm pretty new to ham radio and studying for my license. I'm not getting inbound audio. It seems like I'm getting a signal but somehow its not decoding right. I'm not sure if you call demodulation. I made a video about it below. Do you think this device is worth fixing? ruclips.net/video/W66yRWxssxg/видео.html
Its amazing how quick you tracked this down.😀
Another Kenwood off the operating table. Only hurt, they never die Good work Buddy Thank You
Thanks Wayne. The patient pulled through!
something that is very close in detail and real specific on on exactly how to learn everything
Thanks for the comment
Just found your channel. Look forward to viewing many of your videos to fulfill my radio thirst
Your detail blew me away ! Thank you for this post, very informative. I will check back for sure looking at other educational videos.
+William Grall Well thank you very much for that nice comment. Not really all that hard, specially when you have been through a few of these.
Enjoyed the repair. Always something to learn. Thanks for posting!

That was a great video. Thanks for the tip on the tape heat shield too.
+David Gillooly And thank you David for watching. Capstan tape of aluminum tape works great to keep the heat off the other parts. Nothing I hate more than hunt for flying parts :-) Thanks for watching and glad you stopped in.
Thanks buddy yur the best. I bet he did drive under a metal roof with his antenna. Pretty short on 220.
Nice Work! always fun to watch you work!

+FEY Thank you so much my friend. That was 3 since October.Much appreciated.
First pin on left, is RF drive input.
Enjoyed the video on the TM 631 repair. How do I make contact with you as I have a Tm 631A ( 2m / 220 ) that needs memory battery replaced... ??
Will an rf signal tracer pick up an understandable voice at the antenna input or does it have to go through some process before it can be heard?
Short answer, no. Although if the signal is strong enough and there is a bit of signal mixing you may be able to pick out something but not common. You would need to move further down in the chain to a mixing or IF stage to really pick up a legible signal.

Where do guys like you and Paul source your parts from for older radios... ie let's say 2000 and beyond in age?
When I say 2000 and beyond I mean 2000 thru today.... Thanks!!
Hello. I get most of my capacitors and resistors from Justradio.com. Other stuff from mouser, Digikey, ebay ect. Hope that helps

Can you share with what type of microscope you have and how you get it on the TV display. I would like to put something like that in service

Thank you very much. And thanks for joining in.

I guess you could adjust your screen saver for a longer duration before it activates! oh! Four years ago! Never mind.
Where did you find that high temp tape to protect the parts on the board?
www.all-spec.com/Catalog/Adhesives-Sealants-Tapes/Tapes/Polyimide-Tapes/1656-05
is where I get mine or google capstan tape

Replied to your video :-)
I prefer to wick off all solder, start fresh.
My 621a doesn’t receive on 144mhz.
You need that new scope. Go ahead an order one and charge it to Elon Musk. He's a science guy, so he won't mind.
