Dawn from the “Minimal Mom”, had a great video about organizing someone else’s stuff(without getting rid of anything) to jumpstart their decluttering and organizing process. She was down in their basement and went through all of her husband’s tools, etc.and even had a trash bucket but didn’t throw it away so that he could go through it and confirm that it was trash. You could sort your dad’s stuff into “like with like” so that it would be less overwhelming for him.
I’ve watched you from the start Mariela, can’t fault your dedication and commitment to your parents’ wellbeing. Those early days were hard for you and I confess to getting angry on your behalf. But you had a vision and you’ve kept going and there’s no way I could have kept it up like you have
Congratulations on finding that heavy duty rack for free!!! 🎉❤ I got excited when I saw you put all the Christmas totes on it because they are heavy and seem to be in the way when you're trying to work in therev👍👍
The garage is looking so good! I like to see the progress, we have to do the same to our garage. And storage building. AND house! Thank you for the motivation!
watching this video actually makes me a bit sad. No one family needs that much stuff. He cant possibly use all that. All I can think of as I routinely declutter my home, is that anything that is here will have to be dealt with by my children when I am gone. The thought of them having to deal with "stuff" on top of grief is always enough for me to let something go. I cant even imagine having a garage full or a home full like they do. What a blessing you are to deal with all that If you havent dealt with the wreaths, put nails in the wall and hang them there
I used to have a stack every bit that big. About 5 years ago I started taking everything out and decorating my house. The stuff I didn't use and actually hadn't used for a long time was donated. It is best to donate at the beginning of the season since many places really don't want seasonal things sitting in their stores that long. Every year I have let go of more. This year my pile was only 5 boxes and one of those was fall decor not Christmas. My house is much prettier with less and I have more space for family since that has only continued to grow with the addition of 11 grandchildren. Nice job on the garage. That stuff wasn't collected overnight and it won't declutter overnight as well. God bless!
Here again lol.. I made a comment earlier and just noticed in this video that your ceiling isn’t finished.. you could put a piece of plywood up there to make a sort of shelf for light stuff like suitcases and ornaments… and the using the metal shelving unit for other things that can’t be stacked? Since the containers can be neatly stacked together? Just a thought lol I’m watching this sitting in my own hoarder garage… it’s so much harder when it’s your own stuff.. I’d give anything to have someone like you help me just get rid of everything
hi! lol there are already some things up at the top using plywood but not completely covering it. there's probably tons up there to declutter too and maybe we can move other stuff up there. thanks so much for watching and commenting! I wish I could help you too haha
Absolutely congratulations on the new shelf unit!!! We had 3 of them but moved and gave our daughter 2 of them. So glad you had your brother and dad able to help too! Yes i pray you are able to put all storage in totes and no cardboard boxes.
Perhaps after this long and arduous project is done, you can do something for yourself! Honestly, though, your parents should be grateful for your help in minimizing their mess. Kudos to you for getting this much progress done regardless 😊👏
You are an inspiration for me. I need to start on our garage, which is a messy disaster. Not quite as much stuff as your parents, but it's bad. Also a small walkway to get around, and an old truck filled with random stuff. And I will have to do it on my own. I have purchased 1 heavy-duty metal shelving unit that is full. I intend to purchase another larger one and start organizing and decluttering. Having a place to store stuff makes a big difference. Congratulations on succeeding with this enormous challenge. And thank you for sharing.
So great to see to progress on the garage as a whole and the second shelf unit. Wonderful to see your dad and brother help too. I will be praying you all 3 can take a day and remove all your dads stuff into piles so he can decide what to keep and praying more free shelves and totes come your way🙏🏻👍🏻☺️
Score! Nice to have another shelf unit, what a difference it made. Very good to get all the Holiday items in one area. After the next Christmas, as it gets put away, it can be even more organized, more like items together in the bins. It's come a long way since you first began this project. As it keeps going your dad may want to part with more as he sees how good it looks and easier to find things. Next step is getting all his tools/supplies organized; would be nice if you could get a couple more shelf units and more bins. Good to have the bins labeled, index cards work perfectly. Nicely done, you've come a long way!
Eventually if you can get more shelves, you can have your dad separate his stuff into piles by like items then put in bins, label them and put on the shelves
Go team! It was nice to see you have help. I hope your dad gets inspired (even a tiny bit) to work on his tools. You have made a tremendous difference in what amounts to a true act of love for your parents. I'm thinking patience is a verb not a feeling. Many blessings!
I think I got more excited than you did when I saw that new shelving unit. It’s exactly what I was picturing in my mind for your parents garage. Don’t forget your mom has added to the pile in the garage. When she emptied her dining room for the holidays.
Love watching this series. This space and your experience helping your parents is the most relatable I’ve found on RUclips. Can’t wait to see how you handle working with your dad to go through his tools and supplies.
So good! Maybe you say you’re not patient, but you’re determined and optimistic! (Maybe send subliminal messages to Dad about Swedish Death Cleaning, lol, and also your siblings owe you big time!)
I love this series. Very real, very open and raw. So many people struggle with clutter, and I'm glad you were willing to share these videos. I have one tip that may or may not be useful in further decluttering. It's specifically the water bottles. I know this may not work for everyone, but consider it and see if it's a good fit for you or your parents: replace the water bottles with one filtered water pitcher. Takes up so much less room, you just keep it in your fridge. Plus, it uses the water you already have and just filters it for you. It's a pitcher, so you just fill it up and every few months replace the filter. Yes the filters are pricey, but I bet it's cheaper than having to buy so much bottled water, in the long term. So, a cost savings and a space savings. Just a though. Again, I know maybe not everyone can do this idea, because of various reasons. And you are VERY patient!!! You really are. I bet you also just really cherish your parents and want to help. Happy Wednesday!
Thanks so much! I love that water idea because I actually do that at my home. I agree it saves money and is good for the environment! I suggested to my parents but seems like they won't do it at least now.
@@MarielaMerino i totally understand. :) it can be very difficult to switch to something new that is one of the fundamentals like water! sometimes just you suggesting it once, might influence their future decisions. :) One day, maybe they lug that big water bottle package in the garage and it's so heavy, right, and they remember what you said, and maybe whatever day that is, it could click. ;) Take care, Mariela. I've since watched some of your other videos as well, and I really enjoy your tips and tricks. My house is already so much more decluttered after watching your channel!
You have done so great on the garage. Sometimes helping others is really hard. But I love how you organize the stuff there keeping, and maybe at Christmas time, your dad will see how much he has kept and get rid of more. I hope you both keep up the great work 😊
Great progress! You accomplished so much while honoring your father's feelings. You have found the right annount of help and patience. Don't give up. I think you are close to completion.😊
Hi Mariela! Your journey alongside your family has been so motivational and inspiring! The before and after is amazing! Nice find with the free rack! Those definitely help!
I absolutely love this video Mariela! How exciting for you and your family! What a big Difference you guys made and to have the Christmas stuff all together. That was a great idea! I also love how you are getting free shelving! Thank you for sharing your journey ❤❤❤
That was awesome! What a difference a year and half makes LOL. I have been following the series from the beginning and you have definitely made a real difference in the garage. When you first opened the roll up door you the stuff was almost up to the ceiling and completely covered the floor. I am so happy that you scored more free shelving! There is more out there LOL. Great job and very enjoyable to watch.
I'm so glad that you were smiling by the end. It looked like you were feeling the pressure at the start. Keep an eye out for another rack, hopefully longer. If your dad sees how this rack worked, he might be more motivated to do his stuff. If your brave you could at least sort into piles of electrical, car, plumbing etc. Either way, you're an amazing and beautiful daughter and I really feel this step is going to pave the way for massive changes in your dad and your family garage. Xx
@@MarielaMerino This is what I found in a quick search: Whether your water heater is powered by electricity or gas, it could be a fire hazard. Leaking gas, sparks, and damaged electrical-element burners can all cause fires. Don't allow any material to be placed around your water heater area.
Nice job with so much stuff to process. I would keep trying to get as many racks as you can so that you can continue to get stuff grouped together and off the floor.
Yes, you are so patient and calm...Much more than I would ever be! I was confused, but now, I see that the Christmas stuff rack is a second rack. I hope you can get more racks! I also hope your Dad and brother will help again and maybe Dad will see he doesn't have to have so much stuff...

You're amazing. Progress!! Question: If that's a hot water heater, are you concerned that so much is packed close to it? Is that safe?
Thanks! I think about that but honestly for over 20 years the heater had way more stuff around it than it does now. So maybe it's ok ?

I agree, the sentimental items could use its own shelving. I'd like to open up the idea or I will continue to research for free/secondhand options
