Inspired by both my father and @PG_Plup, I decided to show you guys some basics, tips, and tricks on how to play and become better at minesweeper. Slow and steady wins the race, but the speed is the only part that's impressive. You must learn the ways of the mines, understand them, and only then can you conquer this algorithmic game.

50:50:90 rule. If you see a 50:50, there is a 90% chance that youll land on a mine.

@@andrewroes7942 i mean i randomly clicked in the middle of the field in microsoft's win10 version for like 50 tries and it never happened to me. meaning if it was there it is no longer supported as it is not intentional. the field is supposed to generate after you click and guarantee that the square you click does not have a number and reveals at least some part of the field. but on the other hand i played some random minesweeper games on the internet and it did happen to me constantly thus it is just a malfunction

Here are some extra tips you missed.
If a pattern is ever a "1 2 1" there will never be a bomb in the middle.
If a pattern is ever a "1 2 2 1" then the two bombs will always be in the middle
If you have a layout like this

Then all the ones in the top row are safe, as the 50/50 only belongs to the bottom two.

I cleared expert mode 3 weeks ago, I became a mathmatician at the end working out probabilities and what would likely be the best box to click.

I run long ass simulations on what will happen when i click a box when i have to guess it, if it will actually string with the adjacent and following tiles and if it would make sense. A last remaining 2 tiles 50/50 is my bane.

4:06 Advanced tip: You know that 2 in the middle HAS TO satisfy one of those spots to the right of the 1.
Therefore you know for a fact that the 3 spots to the left of that 1 are for sure safe which can reveal more info to hopefully help with the rest.
But that would be assuming that bottom 3 wasn't already there to tell you where that mine around the 1 was, I just bring this up because the technique I mentioned will occur several times.
Also, I like to play in medium difficulty because it provides the challenge of expert with reduced chance of 50/50s appearing.
I read this twice and still dont understand-
@@Adelaide_R._Nova In the top left on my timestamp I wrote the rows below with "?" for unknown, "X" for flagged mine space, and numerical values where appropriate, the board looks like this:
1) ? ? ? 2 X
2) ? ? ? 3 3
3) ? ? 1 2 X
4) ? ? ? 3 2
5) ? ? 3 X 2
So the 2nd "?" in rows 2), 3), and 4) are guaranteed safe. How you know this is because of the 2 in row 3) that sits next to the 1. The 2 already has one mine known (X to it's right) so it only needs one more around it, either the 3rd ? in row 2) or the third ? in row 4) as they are the only spots left where the mine could be. Regardless of which one it is, that will satisfy the 1 in row 3) so you can remove the other spots surrounding it (2nd ? in 2-4)
Fortunately though, in this situation we know for sure that the mine is the ? in row 4) below the one because of the 3 in row 4) which already has two X's satisfied and only has one available spot left, guaranteeing it. But this won't always be the case.
Wow, way to make me feel that I've played this too much! I never use flags anymore, it at least feels a lot faster, but of course misclicks are a threat. My bests: easy 3 sec, normal 28 sec, difficult 86. Also, like was already pointed out, you didn't have to guess at 5:34. The 333 situation at the bottom was solvable + there were a couple of singular tiles that could've been opened.
Sorry for replying to a 3 years old comment but I have no clue how this situation is solvable; do you have any resource on minesweeper patterns that can be solved?
@@potterman28wxcv Looking at this now, I wouldn't blame you if you said that I used the word "solvable" too liberally ^^' Now I would go with "you can solve at least some of it". To be exact, you can open the bottom tile and flag the 4th one from the bottom. Half the time (1&4 vs 2&3), you can solve further.
And no, I have never "studied" Minesweeper, I've just played almost daily for 10+ years :D

At 5:45 you could have cleared the top tile which we see turns out to be a #1; that would give you enough information to continue without guessing. I mean the square 2 spaces above the one you guessed was a bomb.
Reason being that you know one of the bottom two have to have a bomb to satisfy the #2 on the bottom, which in turn ensures that the top #2 is also satisfied by one of those two squares, showing the tile above those two squares as safe.
Never thought it would be ESAM playing this, nor me watching a guide from his other than smash

Not really. 5:38 He didn't notice that 6th from top, 4th from left can't be a mine.
At 4:15 the 1 he's talking about doesn't have to be a guess. The 2 next to it gives away that one of the outside squares needs to be a mine. Which means you can clear the 3 spaces behind the 1. If the middle one turned out to be a 1 as well you can move back another row and clear the next three as well.
My record on expert is 2:30 on the new version. I was happy to learn a couple things. The '121' formation on a wall is easy to see, the middle one can't be a mine because it means the 1s block the only remaining options for the 2 in the middle. I realized watching this that it applies to 232 formations on walls as well. So it's a 'n, n+1, n' formation. Also seeing ones in inner corners means the inner corner block is free, as long as the number next to the inner corner 1 is more than one. It's another n, n+1 form. This will help me improve my score.
Civ IV bts with bug is my favorite game but I can only figure out immortal. One time I libbed rifling on deity but then I lost. I have tried probably 25 other times and gotten DOWed by a seemingly impossible opponent around or before Civil Service or Engineering, or also common is failing to pull off early horse and elephant wars, or also being immediately boxed to just 4 mediocre cities with no iron or elephants, commerce or marble eg. Plus have to expand fast to possibly compete for spots so my research suffers. Civ Fanatics forums is great and I watch Chris' videos but if anyone else can help me let me know.

I love minesweeper. It just sucks that the only people I can talk to about minesweeper are people who aren't gen Z or if they are part of my immediate friend group. It could be one of those situations where something seems smaller than what it actually is, but I just feel like minesweeper is a forgotten legend. One of those games that should just be a staple in the gaming world, like how WOW and Minecraft are.
You know, minesweeper is not so big like minecraft and wow, but it has to be as popular as tetris and etc. old games, but it don’t.
Gen Z here and I literally haven't met anyone IRL who even knows to play except my brother lol I pulled this game up on my phone one day and my sister goes "You know there's a rhyme and reason to that game? I always just guessed." LOL

So you see the 3 in the bottom right that has two mines? if the third mine was one the bottom of the three spots available, then the 3 right above can't be completed, so this spot is not a mine. This also shows the location of one mine (at the right of the 3rd 3).
In the middle, next to the group of 1's there's a 2 with a mine on it's right side. If either the spot above or below that mine happens to be another mine, then the 3 to the left can't be completed.
The same principle applies to the couple of 2's on the very top.

Finally the video we've all been waiting for
I have a minesweeper game on my phone that comes with a bonus difficulty, "Extreme". I can win on Expert pretty easily but I still haven't won a game on Extreme.
Expert is the same as this original, 16 x 30 grid with 99 mines. That means 99/480 squares are mines, or 20.625%.
On Extreme, the board is 24 x 30, which is 720 squares, with 180 mines. That means 25% of the squares are mines.
You wouldn't think a small difference of 3.375% more mines would make a huge difference, but I've known how to play minesweeper for at least 20 years and can beat expert in 70-80 seconds. But here I am still struggling for my first win on Extreme 😭
On Expert you usually have to guess 1 or 2 times on a 50/50. Expert is easily 5+ times 😭
Edit: HOLY SWEET JESUS I FINALLY BEAT IT! Took me no less than 222 attempts 😳
I’ve got that but it’s 200 mines on the 24x30 and have yet to beat it out of hundreds if not a thousand tries at this point
Apart from the most obvious ones, I think the most useful strategy to remember is:
X mines among A, B & C
X+1 mines among B, C & D
Then A is good and D is a mine.

At 5:41 You had the option in the bottom right corner where those 3's are to open a square because it wasn't possible for there to be a bomb against that bottom wall since the 3 above it had 2 more options of bombs, one of which was shared by the 3 below it.
Also on the very right, near that 2, one top right diagonally from it could have also been opened because of the 3 next to the 2 assuring there was a bomb shared there.
Same for 2 2's in the very top right of the discovered plane, the one against the wall could have been deducted to be safe to click too.
I prefer ESAMs over ECIGs
At 5:39 No need to guess. The 3s at the buttom is solveable.. The middle 3 needs 2.. And the buttom 3 cant reach both since it already has 2.. Therefor you know the tile above the middle 3 is a mine. And the middle 3 still need 1 mine.. So its either next to it or just bellow.. Therefore the tile furthest down is not a mine... blalbalab
I love this game. I’ve finished expert in 120 so far. I’m trying so hard to get better and get it at under one minute
Thank you for this information. I now feel that much closer to becoming a true professional who will be able to gamble at a sufficiently successful rate to pursue Minesweeper full time as a lucrative and glorious career. I will travel near and far to defeat all manner of adversaries with my true prowess and maximum leverage of minimal luck. Gary Kasparov while cry in his stein. Ninja will quake in his boots. And as I travel to Prague in my Pravda and gold-plated titanium suitcase containing the laptop with which I rule, a newly bashful mover and shaker in the seat next to me will ask just what it is that I do for a living, and I will be able to respond with full confidence and pride, "I'm a world professional Minesweeper player."
The best times that I remember were 4 seconds for Beginner and 45 for Intermediate. Don't remember Expert time offhand, no longer have access to that computer.

Finally, a guide worth watching.
You didn't have to guess at 5:46. If you look at the three vertical 3s on the bottom right, you'll notice that the bottom 3 is already touching two flags. Accordingly, only one of the 3 blank squares it is touching can be a mine. But the middle 3 must be touching 2. That means two things: (i) the blank square all the way at the bottom (the one below and to the right of the bottom 3) is not a bomb. It also means that the fourth square up from the bottom has to be a bomb. By guessing you're losing games.

You can also press space to do BOTH flag and clear adjacent tiles. So you CAN play with a trackpad

with deduce you can open the square with the "O" mark, and flag the square with "X" mark

At 5:41, you guessed a mine when you had two other guaranteed solves. One would be at the top, which couldn't be a mine because if it was, the 2 at the third row would have no space for it's second mine. The same applies to the mine at the furthest right, next to the 2. The tile above the 2 cannot be a mine since if it was, the revealed tiles would leave no space for the third mine at 3.

So insanely fast talking and teaching - 02:02 you've taught me the 1 and 1 with the 2 above and by default, the one next to the 2 is safe to click - but I had to watch it 10 times to figure out the logic. This is the tough logic that I was missing and is helpful. Thanks. Talking and teaching was just way way too fast in this vid. Thanks as I can just pause it and review ;) Also, I assume it's always better to go with a better than 50/50 than a 50 50 if you have a 1 in 3 chance or even better, when there's no sure-thing clicks.

I love Minesweeper. My best time is 221 seconds on Expert. I still have a long way to go. A lot of it has to do with luck, obviously, so I don't take it seriously when I lose. Like, I just know that one day I'm gonna get one of those crazy sub-100 games.

The rules are that if there is a number in the middle, it tells you how many mines are around it so you have to use those numbers to figure out where the mines are
I am playing this on a phone. It is more fun then it looks!
i generally dont like copetetive games like smash because of their complexity, the games i like are usually slow-paced, and easy to learn like minesweeper. you don't constantly have to be stressed by a moving opponent that could do anything at any second, and you don't have to react in various ways depending on what said opponent does.
it's a much more casual game.

Hey Esam did you know that aerials with landing hitboxes (e.g. Pika&Corrin dair, Falco fair) can break low% combo starters like uptilts and d-throws? It's even faster than landing and shielding. The more you know... ;)

Hey, if there was one thing you could’ve said to help a new player, is that the numbers indicated how many mines were connected/near that tile. I was confused till I figured it out after like 4 mins.. lol but I wanna play this even more now after figuring that out, when I was a kid I didn’t understand it and just clicked randomly but now I feel like I can win my first game!

the [3] needed 2 more mines to be satisfied and since the [1] is at the edge, only 1 mine can be in position A or B. therefore the other mine to satisfy the [3] can only be in C. from there, there is sufficient information to solve the rest of it normally
