  • Black holes are in the news!
Sci-fi. It’s not just for nerds anymore.
2001 made space travel feel more attainable. Alien made sci fi scary. ET made us cry. Well, some of us.
    Star Wars made sci-fi profitable.
Soon every studio was eager to bring sci fi to the mainstream.
Even Disney was no stranger to sci-fi. The Cat from Outer Space didn’t exactly set the screen on fire.
Until finally they just bought Star Wars.

Seriously, I truly think that Disneys "The Black Hole" is without a doubt in my opinion the best single science fiction adventure film ever made. Just let it happen to you without preconceived ideas, it is brilliant and the opening score is stunning ....I am so glad they didn't make it into a continuing boring saga...

The Cygnus was a beautiful ship and the robots were fun. I also enjoyed space being blueish with millions of stars. Unfortunately the writing was terrible.

  • @Concreteowl

The effects hold up. The plot less so. The ship was huge because the crew was big. Now it's empty. That's the point.

In his book Fantastic Cinema (highly recommended BTW) Peter Nicholls remarks that the black hole is red, presumably so that we can see it better. I thought that was a good observation about the deficient science in this movie.
BTW: have you ever seen the British sci fi series Blake's Seven? It could more or less be described as a dyspotian, cynical anti Star Trek.

I took it to be because the light was getting red-shifted due to the event horizon, because the view from outside was blue-shifted. Or I could just be giving far to much credit to the effects people...

The ending is meant to look like heaven and hell but, is more like just the Cygnus has crashed on another planet on the other side the heaven part is prob just the palominio crew passing out and just having that dream.
Why couldn't it be hell..because the Cygnus crew are there also and I doubt everyone was evil and went to he'll with Reinhardt.

Sci-fi wasn’t meant for kids exclusively. LOL It was never considered kids stuff. It was cheesy due to the time period those types of films started in. 😂 Star Trek is sci-fi. Wasn’t targeted towards kids but was popular with them at the time. Sci-fi is for everyone depending on the tone of it.

I just rewatched this movie, and I have a bit of different interpretation about the ending. Yes, it absolutely could be that Reinhardt is condemned to hell...but...also The Cygnus itself is a bit of a metaphor for Hell, too, and Reinhardt and Maximilian plays avatars of the devil/Satan. In the end, they become one being, and rather than just being a denizen of Hell, they are actually it's Ruler, standing above the other tormented souls, just as they did on the Cygnus. Yes, Reinhardt is being punished, but he also simultaneously gets exactly what he wants. As for the rest of the crew, from what I can tell, the novelization basically indicates that they become one with the Universe. In essence, they go to heaven, reach enlightenment, are reborn to a new life, become God....

  • @CaminoAir

The movie probably ranks at the front of the second tier of SF movies of that period. It's mood is unfocused, an experienced cast give lacklustre performances and the script needed a re-write.....but....For all that it has impressive production design, excellent visual effects and is entertaining, with a better judged running time than most SF films.

0:31 Since when is Star Wars sci-fi? Star Wars is high fantasy space opera, yo!
1:20 That's probably a realistic depiction of what it would be like.
1:54 Do you think Captain McCrea's name in 'WALL-E' is an homage to the name "McCrae?"
9:40 VINCENT does the same thing to Maximilian later on.
10:05 I've used that same joke before in reference to this movie.
    12:29 That was perfect. XD

    • @gerrya2133
      @gerrya2133 3 года назад

You have that backwards. Since when is Star Wars considered a Fantasy Space Opera? That’s the new classification that some people are using now. Before that it was Science Fantasy. Before that it was Science Fiction. It wasn’t a wave of fantasy being popularized in modern media, The Newbee is right that it’s what led to a wave of popularizing science fiction in modern media.

I've often wondered if Captain McCrea from 'WALL-E' might have been named after Kate McCrae. Different spelling, but just barely.
10:05 I made that joke 10 years ago when I made an AMV using scenes from this movie spliced together with music from the Half-Life games.
12:27 Notice how that parallels what Maximilian did to ("Not Robert G.") Durant.
13:09 If they're hearing their own thoughts, then why that specific line? None of them heard Reinhardt say that.

This is a good 1979 movie that has held up very well, partly because it has a good story. Yvette Mimieux (b. 1942), covered neck-to-toe, was hotter than in any of her earlier movies, including The Time Machine (1960). Her ESP was a great addition but was insufficiently explored.

That's where you're wrong, Disney didn't buy Star wars George Lucas sold Star wars to Disney. I know you may believe it's the same thing but it's not. Shane Disney bought Star wars make it sound like they didn't have to meet any stipulations, but they had to meet George Lucas's stipulations Amy Disney didn't meet those stipulations George Lucas would not have sold Star wars. George Lucas made a lot of money Disney lost a lot of money so then it just buy Star wars, George Lucas sold Star wars to Disney and now Disney is trying to cut George Lucas out of the deal. that's why Disney is trying to kill off the original Star wars characters & create a new Star wars.
