Musicologist, Completist, Obsessive, whatever you call it. If I like a band, I get everything they ever did. I have almost 9000 albums, and I’m discovering old or new music everyday. I’ll never stop. At this level, it’s a passion few understand.
Completely understand,massive music fan,but grew up on film and TV.About 800 films on VHS,200 on laser disk,and about 8000 DVDs,stopped collecting about 4 yes ago,only bout about 200 DVDs in last 4 yrs

I’m a life long musician and also a huge music fan. I love the classic rock I played in my high school and 20’s bands.
I usually listen to 5 or 6 albums a day and I’m always on a quest to find a new band with a new great song. A signature song that I play over and over and pick up a guitar and play along. To me, a single song can define a band in my mind and open me up to dig deep into the artist.
Thanks to Anthony’s recommendation, I’m deep diving into Morgan Wade and I’ve preordered her new August release. She really tells a powerful and honest story of struggling and success in ‘The Night’ - the standout ballad on ‘Reckless’.

I just love the Clash London Calling, Combat Rock. And Springsteeen Darkness On the Edge of Town. Those albums just are so rock/punk out to me.
I'm format driven (cd) and era driven (late 40's-mid 60's for jazz) and (mid 60's-mid 90's for R&B).
The better way to analyze this is what drives the fan. Is it concerts or fan memberships?
I'm the following:
era driven
format driven
compilation driven
alternate driven (ie exploring Charlie Parker and different improvisations of the same song). That is one of the tenets of jazz where the listener seeks each separate performance and looks for new themes. Jazz can essentially be modernizing and reinterpreting an old musty standard. Remixes also explore different interpretations and styles within the same framework (song).
When you finish watching the Bon Jovi documentary I'd love to see a video with you and Anthony discussing it. I would like to hear your takes on the departure of Richie etc. Id consider myself a diehard fan,would always buy what they do but have my fave releases.
2 other types of other fans
- fans of a band who was a fan of the band when they were an “indie” band playing small clubs and then when the band becomes popular they always feel the need to mention they were a fan when no one knew who the band was and they think they’re better than the bands newer fans.
- a “poseur” fan : I didn’t even know this was a thing until not too long ago. It’s people who buy the band’s t shirts who don’t even know know who the band is, can’t name a song or album and know nothing about the band. They wear the shirt because it looks cool.
For me personally, I fall into all those categories depending on the band. For one, I only have one Disturbed album on vinyl. That being their "Believe" album. I only like that one and that's all I want to own. I only have the first 7 Bon Jovi albums that were released, because that's all I remember listening to and stopped caring to listen to their stuff after Crush. I have every Metallica album from Kill 'Em All to 72 Seasons, because I am a hardcore Metallica fan. So I think just depending on the band you will fall into each one of those categories you and Anthony talked about.
Personally, I'm just a music fan! I love listening to music and reading about my favorite bands. I don't care about buying all of the studio albums, unless it's for a band I love. If an album catches my eye, I'll buy it! Great video!

Damn! seems I'm a 'Greatest Hits' fan! The trouble is my taste in music is soooooo wide. Started with Maiden, then UK SKA, then Punk, then Marley, then Goth, then Indie. Like Anthony said, so many albums that have brought since getting back into vinyl are are just that 1 or 2 by a band because of a certain time/memory. Yesterday I brought the Greatest Hits by Echo and the Bunnymen. Last week I brought Gong - You, Def Leppard - High N Dry, The Smiths - Louder than Bombs ...
...you know, the deep album cuts could be very happening.
If you like The Smiths and the Bunnymen, you might like bands from the modern era that cite them as their most major influence, like Panic! At The Disco or Echosmith (of "Cool Kids" fame.) The former is of course more of an acquired taste. The latter's namesake comes from both the Bunnymen and Smiths. They're a female-fronted family indie-pop band from suburban L.A.. Their 2013 eponymous breakthrough debut Talking Dreams is actually pretty decent for a synth heavy pop-rock band whose music is a cross between Coldplay, Roxy Music and Paramore, with a tiny hint of Starshipesque arena rock added to their sound. That's by far Echosmith's best album, although their most recent S/T album from last year is a hidden indie gem. The EP and LP between the two are more electropop than they are indie pop-rock. The band's sound is evolving, and their singer Sydney Sierota's voice is maturing greatly. She was only 16 when Talking Dreams came out, and her then young voice was a cross between Hayley Williams and Taylor Swift. Her voice range (at age 26) on their last album has an Amy Lee (of Evanescence) meets Grace Slick sound to it. If you're into today's modern rock, you might want to give them a listen.

You guys are the best! I guess I'd say im a diehard fan. With Bon Jovi for example I'll always get new releases etc but i really do miss Richie. I think some of dynamic was lost when he left...just my opinion. I'd love to see you guys do a review of the Bon Jovi docuseries.
Yeah there was more edge and emphasis on the guitar with Richie. Even though the band isn’t really as hard rock any more there still seemed to be more prominent guitar. I do miss that. And his soloing.
@@BrendonSnyder their vocals blended well together too. Richie's voice was strong and compensated when Jon was having a tough time...especially live. No offense to the new guys but that will not be replicated.

I’m all 5, it depends on the band. Some bands I only care about a few songs, others I want one album or a greatest hits collection, others multiple albums (usually in a row) and few bands I own all their albums.
Bon Jovi’s first 2 albums were incredible in my ears - it was New Jersey that killed my passion for their music. Keep the Faith was a great update, but These Days again killed it….and I never got it back
Great show as always. For some bands I have to have everything Ie: competes & sometimes even a greatest hit's along with all their music. Then other bands just some of their music will do or just the greatest hits.
I would describe myself as a music fan first but not of any particular band although I have various bands in my collection of which I have got all their studio albums. You can view this topic from this point of view. People who really like music and are not confined to one band/ one genre/ one era. I can listen to sixties music but also to music from young bands who are putting their first album out this year.. I can listen to rock, jazz or opera etc if the moods strikes me,... and I like to explore new bands. But there are people who will put down anything that is not by their band / in their genre/ or in their favourite era.
Love this video! As a die-hard Doors fan, I have collected all their albums, including the last two without Jim. I have different plant pressings, stereos and monos, promotional copies, reissues and remastered editions, 50th-anniversary editions, box sets, picture discs, colored vinyl, record store day releases, live concert records, greatest hits compilations, and 45s. I also have some records with original shrink wrap and some with hype stickers. I have many bootleg records, and I even own some Doors CDs. Although I'm not much of a cd person, I can't resist getting a Doors cd whenever I come across one at a record store.
I consider myself a completist, die hard fan. I usually need to have a complete catalog of my favourite bands and seek out new bands in my favourite genres. I am a huge thrash/ death , tradition metal fan and I love promoting new bands to help solidify the metal movement. I like this podcast as it promotes a lot of new releases and that is so important 🤘

Great topic and yes I think Bon Jovi the Documentary would be a good episode also. I do like how in the documentary Jon says "Bands we opened for hated us, because they wanted to steal the show and did, but also Bon Jovi was never really someone to label as a certain type band" I get the ROCK part, but I never saw them as Heavy Metal by any stretch, maybe at times Hard Rock, I just think of them as a Rock Band, have they mellowed, to an extent yes but I also would tie this into your talk here on how Jovi like other bands that exploded and had a career after the hey day, like an REM, U2 etc...some swear U2 has never had a good album since Joshua Tree, some hate everything REM did after Document, I think its similar with Jovi as people dismiss it right away, someone posted a snippet of the song Jovi wrote for his daughters wedding that is on the new album, and already you get comments saying "they suck, I'll skip this album too, give me Slippery" and I get the attachment to a time and era and as much as I like a "Joshua Tree" or "Slippery" or "New Jersey" I don't often go back to them, maybe time to time its a great walk in the past feeling, I get that but it won't stop me from listening to the new album alot. also I would say because I listen or buy everything on an artist I can critique them better, some disagree, but I totally get on artists I like if I dont like an album, I really don't like Bon Jovi "What About Now" its too long, too many songs, and a very average record nothing cohesive, a few good songs, but I almost never listen to it fully, with REM I have it all, like most of them, cant get into an album like UP at all, with u2 its a similar thing, Joshua is great I am not crazy about earlier stuff than that, I think "All that you cant leave behind" is amazing and Im not a fan of POP or ZOOROPA for the most part, so I think if you digest a full catalog you can be more critical as opposed to going in saying, if this doesn't rock like "Slippery" then it sucks
Brendon - great topic, well done and Anthony and you make it special and fun. Yes you should Rock Rock until you drop! Listening to music is so relaxing and enjoyable, especially listening to your favorite band(s).
What a crazy discussion. I would love to be a musicologist, but I couldn’t afford it. So I must be a part time musicologist. I have all of Rush cds, vinyl, promos, white label as much as I can afford. I love fish’s Marillion too, and have all their CDs and box sets. Riverside similarly, all vinyl and CDs. I’m just getting into Threshold and realising why I have no money. Interesting with Rush, they changed their genre multiple times, and the transition to each genre was painful.
As for Def Leppard I only like Pyromania, for Bon Jovi, just their first album.
What's your thoughts about when a band is no more but someone decides to go back and record new instruments for demos of songs and release that as an "unreleased" release that sounds nothing like what the band sounds like?

I consider myself a diehard fan of Def Leppard, but I also like Bon Jovi, Nickelback, Daughtry and all the ones from the 80s Winger Whitesnake, white lion poison Mötley Crüe Ratt, I could go on. I’m from that era. I grew up in it. But like someone else said in the comments, the only time I buy anything physical is of those certain bands or singers I have those as well. But like you always in your videos, I’m a music fan!

I'm a "fanatic" for Metallica, Pantera and Guns N' Roses... I know road stories, am trying to get my hands on all the albums, singles, etc... I have vinyl bootlegs, box-sets, etc. That's a fanatic lol

I’m planning to watch the Bon Jovi doc on Hulu this weekend. I will check out the Tom Petty doc. Btw, when Bon Jovi released Crush which was 24 years ago…..I was 25….I will be FIFTY (50) next year!!!
There are certain bands I buy everything that put out like Def Leppard, Tom Petty etc but I still have my favorite albums of these groups. Now I have some other bands that I may like an album or two but then they lose me and they have to do something really good to get me back in. Everyone has their favorite music and to each his own.

Got to say music fan, fan of many banda, buy the Greatest Hits from some, a bit here and there from others, must have all albums by Kiss, wanted to buy everything Pearl Jam all the way up to the trillion different live albums 🤯 buy all things Guns N Roses incl bandmembers (past and present) solostuff. Just to point out, if I got the inference correct with all the tooing and froing in this crazy topic 😂, Def Leppard were indeed apart of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal... I grew up with it, was an integral part of it as a fan and the Leps definitely rode that wave.
HWOBHM was not a genre (many keep suggesting it is) but it was a term for a movement, or trend, of like minded Rock, Melodic & Metal music/bands. The term was started by a music paper in UK, of the time, called Sounds.
Leppard aren't metal by todays varied standards but at that time would have fallen under the banner. Remember Heavy Metal was a term of its time and the term was still in its infancy 😊
But then who cares... music is music, genre is irrelevant if you like it 😁.
As for type of music fan.... I'm more like Anthony.
I'm a die hard music fan of what I like... if that means 1, 2 or all a bands albums depends on if they resonate with me.
Therefore I'd add another category to your list....
'Practicle Music Fan/Collector'
I only keep and listen to what I like...e.g. if my favourite band ever released an album that I hated, I decided I really wouldn't listen to it again, then I won't keep it. I only want material I will want to listen to again. Otherwise, it's taking valuable space so I'll sell it, or trade it etc, and get something else.

Certain bands/artists I am a completist and have to have everything by them, whether or not I like some of the stuff. Also, certain bands/artists I feel like I am a fanatic with blinders on. That is, I think everything they do is great without really being objective and not listening to other people's criticisms. Those bands/artists can do no wrong in my eyes. Some bands are in both my Fanatic category and in my Completist Category. Other artists I am just a casual fan of in that I'll own just a few of their classic albums and greatest hits compilations. And then finally, I might be just a fan of a particular album by an artist but never really bothered exploring the rest of their catalog.
Some examples:
Fanatic - The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, The Doors, U2 - These bands are great and can do no wrong, in my eyes. :)
Completist - Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, The Doors, U2, Iron Maiden, DragonForce, Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, CCR, The Who, AC/DC, Def Leppard, John Mellencamp, The Cars, The Police, Metallica, Overkill, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Van Halen, Rush, Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, Pink Floyd, Blind Guardian, Vintage Trouble and many others. - These artists I have to have everything even though I may not like some of the stuff they've put out. For example, I don't like Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger by Metallica but love everything else. Even though I don't like those 3 albums, I still have them in my collection and will pull them out every 10-15 years to listen to them again and put them away for another 10-15 years. Another example is John Mellencamp. I love all his stuff in the '80s, '90s and early '00s, but as he got older after the turn of the century, he started to slow things down, removing all his signature catchy pop hooks from songs. Once he was able to break away from his record contracts with the big record companies, he felt like he didn't need to make hit singles anymore. So, he had turned into a Dylanesque singer-songwriter who now mostly writes rootsy and acoustic Americana songs about social issues. Some of the newer songs that he has written since he changed his style of music are great songs, but most of them you will never hear on radio. Every once in a while, he'll include an earworm song on some of his newer albums, but they don't compare to his big hits when he was younger. (Springsteen has been the same way for a long time.) With Pink Floyd, even though I own all their studio albums and many live releases, a handful of their albums I do not like whatsoever.
Casual - David Bowie, Prince, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Billy Idol, Kansas, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Rod Stewart, Ratt, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Elton John, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Scorpions, Testament, Tom Petty, The Doobie Brothers, Styx, Eagles, The Pretenders, Queen and many others - I own a handful of classic albums by artists in this category along with a few greatest hits compilations and boxed sets but for one reason or another, I never bothered filling out my collection with the rest of the said artists' catalogs. With Queen, I do own every Freddie Mercury-fronted studio album by them, but I don't have the Queen+Paul Rodgers album nor do I have any of their archival live releases. Own a few comps (Greatest Hits I, II, III,) though. Note: When the Tony Martin era Black Sabbath Box gets released in May, I will have every Black Sabbath studio album in my collection. My Black Sabbath studio album collection has been incomplete because the only albums missing in my collection were 4 of the Tony Martin era albums (Headless Cross, Tyr, Cross Purposes, and Forbidden.) I do have The Eternal Idol in my collections (the first Tony Martin Sabbath album.)
Fan of an Album - Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (Funny that you mentioned this one in this video.) I love the album and always have ever since it was released, but I never bothered exploring the rest of their catalog even though I've heard many of their hits from other albums many times. Never even bothered buying a compilation. Another example is INXS - Kick. Loved the album when it was released in the late '80s and still love it, but never bothered buying anything else by them even though I know many of their other songs from their other albums.
I want to say a few words about fans who are fans of a certain era of an artist/band and then totally dismiss the rest of the catalog without really even trying to listen to the other stuff. Many, many examples I could list:
Some Rolling Stones fans only like their classic heyday (late '60 through the early '70s) and will put down everything else, especially the stuff after Tattoo You without even giving an unbiased try. Not to mention there are Rolling Stones fans who love Mick Taylor albums and will criticize the Brian Jones and Ronnie Wood albums (or vice versa.) To me, that's being silly. Personally, If I like an album by a band, I don't give a crap who is playing what instrument.
Similarly, Judas Priest. Judas Priest has recently put out one of their best albums in their entire career. Quite possibly their best since Painkiller in 1990. Though, some long time JP fans dismiss it because KK Downing is no longer with the band and Glenn Tipton probably doesn't play much, if at all, on the album because of his Parkinson's Disease. Judas Priest's previous album Firepower is just as good as the new one and many long time fans dismissed that one too for the same reasons.
I could go on and on with many other examples, but I won't. I will say this, though. You will never catch me doing that. Sure, there are certain eras of some bands that I like better than others, but I will never dismiss other eras and I will never criticize those eras if I never even bothered giving them a fair chance, in the first place.
I think I'm the only one who likes the new Motley Crue song Dogs of War. Please tell me there are more fans of it besides just me.

i think of Bon Jovi as a Heavy Metal Band with their first couple of albums. If Poison, Warrant and Cinderella are conceded metal, why not Bon Jovi? Bon Jovi now isn't metal.. But back then, yeah. and by the way 7800° Fahrenheit is an awesome album 😁🎸
Bon Jovi’s first two, (their best) is nothing more than hard rock at best! When you mention the other three bands, you have to realize they are 80’s metal! 80’s metal is not heavy metal in the way we know heavy metal! Just like Def Leppard has never been an actual heavy metal band!
.I noticed (more with my dude friends) that most people only like the stuff they liked from ages 15 to 25. Even if it is a band they liked they only like the stuff from their teen ish years. I loved Twisted Sister as a little kid and Dee's for the love of metal album was also awsome for me. Though even the dudes I know who are fans don't seem interested simply because it was newer. My hubby would pretty much only listen to stuff he liked as a teen until just recently. There is this German band that I like (Samurai Pizza Cats) and I had it in my car. He was like okay I really like this?!?!? ha now he is braching out a bit to stuff he had said for years was not for him. I caught him singing Cannibal Corpse the other day wich he used to call " cookie monster music" . Weirdly most of my lady friends always seem way way more open to new bands and music.
I find interesting things in every music genre. I buy and listen to everything, be it jazz, hip hop, electronic, rock, pop, harsh noise, ethnic, or whatever...There are a lots of bands from which i like and own only 1 or 2 albums, and there is actualy no band from which i would like and own their complete discography. I take music as a whole, not being attached to one particular genre or band/artist. However, i don't buy any of "the greatest hits"...
What about the Minor Celebrity fan,that only knows the hits,and you do all the gigs,and they only do one or two ot the gigs & they always make sure they see you in the crowed & they make sure you always see their AAA pass round their neck & they dont even remember the time they actually met you to sign something,when they were an actual sportsman celebrity and you bring it up with them some 17 years later and you get "Oh I don't remember signing that". Happened to me a couple of weeks ago!
Very interesting. My Mum is definitely a Greatest Hits fan of many bands but has no interest in hearing full albums.
My wife is the type that usually listens to compilations of various artists, things like now compilations and also spotify playlists.
I am an album fan. For most bands I'm a completist i need everything. For some I just need the albums so i don't need live tracks and demos but I do tend to get obsessed with bands.
It's interesting when Greatest Hits fans decide to selve deeper. Up until a few years ago my cousin only knew Queen's GH. We met up once a week for a brew, biscuits and a Queen album and she loved hearing all the albums from start to finish. It gave her a new appreciation for Roger Taylor particularly and she came with me to see him on his solo tour!

Im a music fan based on certain genres of music.
Anthony seems to be a big fan of female artists.
I miss my teenage years when I could have a conversation with a nice guy like Anthony in a music shop,although i live in a big town in France,many have closed the doors the last 20 years,and the only ones that stayed alive,the owners are little young arrogants who knows nothin' about music.
There is only one band I own everything by and that is T. Rex. Most of my favourite bands made albums I don’t like so I’ve sold them, I’m not a completist - Queen, Def Lep, Bowie etc come under that category

Exactly! You have to remember the time it originated in. That’s why I call GnR Glam Metal. That’s what they started out as.

I know a lot of fans who like BonJovi and glam rock , metal music , but when they go outside they "hate" that bands because its not heavy metal , and girls like them a lot .

i don't see how it's lazy to write about 1 of the 3 main things in rock music: sex, drugs, and rock n roll.
These Van Halen purist fans drive me nuts. You have the Roth era only fans vs. the all-VH era fans. And of course, the Roth era fans are taking potshots at Sammy Hagar every chance they get, as they give Van Hagar very inappropriate names I cannot repeat here in the comment section. Without question, the Roth era is far better than the Hagar era, although I enjoy BOTH eras. I even liked some of the Cherone era VH songs, but not all of them. And the Roth era fans will ridicule me in the comment section at videos via some channels (mostly from Roth era only fans who loathe anything Sammy Hagar.) This is why I like channels like this, although we do have our disagreements here (which is common,) but I try to be as respectful as possible because it is your channel. I try to see the glass half full at all times. I am not a pessimist, and I believe I am easy to get along with. I know we can all respectfully agree to disagree. I like your "I can respect you if you respect me" and "tastes do change" rules. I like the fact that you're open minded on the music of some artists. I wish all channels had that mindset. Sadly, they're not. And that's unfortunate.
