It's Plastic Free July again (already!) - so I'm gonna do a little vlogging throughout the month and bring you guys along for the ride. Remember, Zero Waste is a lifestyle, not a goal. Just start and see where it takes you...
p.s. I should say the recycling bag is about a month's worth of recycling.

I'm pretty sure that giving the cup back to the lady just made her angry. I would have been like "you took the time to being it back in here, but you can't throw it away?" it's not her fault that the company uses disposable coffee cups.
Just a thought: wouldn't sending the packaging back to the company indirectly cause pollution (due to transport), which counteracts the effect of going zero-waste?
My thoughts exactly. I am totally behind emailing the company but mailing packaging back is counterproductive. The only benefit I see is that mailing it back might have an bigger impact in the mind of the company than an email though I think that would be very hit and miss. I'm sure it's often just tossed out right away before anyone higher up even sees it.
It was a statement she was trying to make. She is intelligent enough to know the pollution, it's an act of protest against their specific way of packaging. If enough people did this sort of thing, companies may start to take notice and make a change. In my opinion, not enough people do this to make a change. I applaud Kate's efforts. I never thought to do it before now, but I will now!
I can see that except chances are very high that in most cases if someone does this the package will be opened by a low level employee who will likely just toss it out and no one will ever even know she did it. If you could arrange a lot of people doing it together I feel it might have more of an impact but really I feel emails stating that you hope they will change and won't buy again until they do might be a better option.
By doing a video with 19,000 subscribers she made a statement that I'm guessing maybe a little more than a handful will undoubtedly do this. She emails as well. I think we have to make every possible effort and not worry about the "what ifs" such as a low level employee just chucking it. Maybe, perhaps, that "low level" employee will take notice and it may hit home (maybe not). But the effort was made. Not enough people make enough effort ever because of the way you think. Because so many people think like you, nothing really gets done at all. People think, "how's that going to make a difference" and skepticism sets in and complacency rules the day and things keep getting worse. It may be Pollyanna of me (and people like Kate), but at least an effort is made and we aren't just sitting around complaining all the time and not doing anything at all to help.
Welcome back! You crack me up - "These are giant bottles of piss."
I've loved your videos and I personally don't use single use items, but seeing you return that coffee cup to waitrose was so upsetting. You seriously think a low level employee wants privileged people who apparently don't have day jobs returning trash to their face? I guarantee the next thing they did was go to their coworkers and fume about the rich asshole who felt so superior. Write all the company's you want, bring a hundred cups to CEOs doorsteps, but do the world and the zero waste movement a favor and don't alienate people who are less fortunate than you. Because if that would have infuriated me, a zero waste bicycle riding vegan, I can only imagine how much you turned that person off of considering a zero waste lifestyle.
I strongly agree
Zoë Mallen I was also gutted, I work on a checkout at a store that has a cafe attached. Customers often hand me there coffee cups for me to throw away and it is extremely degrading. I personally use a reusable cup and dont want their grotty plastic in my face. We literally have no say in anything, please go higher up instead of the people grinding for min wage.
I agree. Although, maybe with a little less anger. I feel like finding a way to educate the public via talks would be more effective than forcing an employee who has no control over a litterer to deal with that person's trash. It does seem entitled. I don't know about sending the packaging back either. It may work with the baking soda company, because they are clearly already looking at the world from that zero waste viewpoint, but if it were a larger company like amazon or sony for example it's just going to go to some low level worker and get thrown away anyhow, while creating extra greenhouse gases to get there. I think your intentions here are good, Kate, but this was sort of off putting to watch.
I agree that more than likely only negative reinforcement would come from returning the coffee cup, if change is important for you to see you should show positive actions as opposed to passive aggressive ones.
I came on a little strong in this comment. I don't mean to shame you, I do think you're a good person on a good mission. You just have to understand that your views come from a place of privilege, you can afford to shop at these awesome stores, you probably don't have to stress daily about how you will pay for your next meal. The time you have to devote to this way of life is a privilege. Just try to approach humans with compassion and humility in an effort to get them to understand. Working stiffs are not your enemy. Please don't hand them others trash.
I just did a beach clean up!! Check it out :D
I'm also doing a zero waste challenge for July, partially inspired by you
I think sending the packaging back to the companies is such a great alternative, very proactive and it can make such a big difference. Well done!
Great to watch your videos again! Looking forward for your weekly posts, maybe? Lots of love from the UAE
Loved the vlog! I remember hearing about the zero waste movement last fall and ever since I've been so aware of the amount of plastic we use and that it really is EVERYWHERE!
Good day in the life. But disappointed the shop was only like 15 seconds of it.
I get every one of my dried goods from that little shop in Totnes! Being zero waste at Exeter University is pretty darn difficult but that place is my saviour.
Oy! Don't diss the espadrilles! The real ones are very eco friendly, as they're made of cord, cloth and rubber, and (in France at least) they're dirt cheap. However, they're not really town shoes. I wear mine as slippers and when going to the beach, so they last me for years.
please do a video about canning tomatoes!!
Kate really love your vlogs, glad you are back after your time off, how did you make your ginger beer?
Luckily, Zero Waste Shops are more popular than ever!
You are great! It's so smart to bring back package to companies (even that empty coffee cup). This is wise way to help them realize, that package doesn't disappear after sale.
but what can they do? the company give a them those cups and t hats it.
Re the baking soda, was it the Cabbages and Rose one you bought online? I'm still looking for suitable baking soda and theirs is always out of stock... plus delivery costs make it quite expensive. Ugh, I live near Dundee and there is no bulk shops or good markets here at all. I make a lot of stuff from scratch and grow vegetables, but zero waste is definitely easier if you live somewhere like London! Love your videos! :)
You're back! Missed the boost of your videos!
So good to have you back always love your blogs and I am attempting Plastic free July oh boy it's a challenge so much plastic on so many items. I had already ditched as much plastic as possible over the last year . Britain needs to take a good look at how much plastic is used. On a more positive note I found seventh generation make a cardboard laundry detergent bottle which I will refill with ecover .
Great to have you back Kate! Loved this video. Really great idea to send packaging back. I keep the cardboard packaging and compost it, but send the plastic back is a great idea. Have you found a way of sending the packaging back for free or have you been paying for it?
Hi Kate! Did you know there's a Zero Waste meetup at Tiny Leaf (SE1) on Thursday night? It would be great to see you there. Find the event on meetup or Facebook.
I'll be there as well! :))))
Love your videos Kate you should be on main tv! I need help- my plastic googles are lifted and I see it everywhere- I want everyone to stop right now and its making me angry- what are your best tips to stop this? Love that you send the non recyclable items back to the companies, no trash pick up groups in my town just feels like its just me. HELP!
watching you vlog is so satisfying! you are zero waste goals. keep doing these types of videos :)
love the idea of sending the packaging back to company, what a success story!
Up in Canada many coffee places will give you $0.10 off your coffee if it's in a reusable cup, it's a neat little incentive
same with in the US. Even big corporations like starbucks do that.
You are so inspirational! I'm finding it really difficult to buy meat and veggies plastic free. Local markets are too far away and no decent butchers around. Any tips?
nk1 Don't be afraid to take your own containers to your deli counters in Supermarkets or your butchers. Initially they look at you like you're crazy but they soon just get on with it.
While shipping + packaging aren't always ideal - subscription health food (produces/meats) are becoming more and more popular and affordable, and because they are growing companies, are impressionable by the consumer about making their companies greener and more eco-friendly.
(a good read and comparison of current delivery companies-
www.thegoodtrade.com/features/5-organic-and-healthy-food-delivery-options-for-the-conscious-consumer)
nk1 Don't buy meat
A little off-topic to this lovely and bright vlog, but if you're in the mood for watching another interesting show about clothing made in Bangladesh, I recommend watching "Made in Bangladesh - The Fifth Estate" on RUclips. The whole episode is available on there. The Fifth Estate is an investigative journalism show on CBC News here in Canada so the show comes at it in that context (ie. how the clothing comes to Canada, etc.), but it's still full of really great information for everyone to learn. I think you would enjoy the watch (even though the tone is serious and moderately horrifying).
Thanks again for making such inspirational videos Kate! : ) Always a pleasure to see your videos pop up in my feed! : )
Hi Kate. I have learned about zero waste last week. I have been reading Lea Johnson's website since then. I have started zero waste 30.06.2017 which is last Friday and since then I didnt bring any plastic packaging, bottle, can etc home. I compost the papers in the garden, compost green food scraps and feed the birds with dried bread.. It is not easy but I am trying hard.So July is my 1st zero waste!! I like your videos, you are genuine and informative. 💛 And where is this "Here" in London? Please? :)
Thanks Kate! Also doing a Plastic-Free Challenge and delving into zero waste practices.
Love the sign at the shop, "Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot"... I am also doing a visit to my local zero waste shop (3 hours away!)
Looking forward to more blogs! - Phoebe
I'm officially subscribed! I love your videos! I'm barely starting to transition into a zero waste lifestyle and it's mind boggling how much plastic waste we produce! I live in California and I'm excited that plastic straws are underway to getting banned; I've been seeing paper straws in Santa Cruz and I've been so inspired. I like your idea of sending plastic packaging back to the companies-it's assertive! I'm definitely going to try that!
Hi! I'm a student living in London and I am trying to reduce my waste. However, the grocery store I go to (Asda) does not have a bulk section. Could any of you guys please give me any recommendations as to where I could find a store in London which offers grocery items in bulk?
Many Thanks!
Recently on Australian tv, a program was broadcasted where Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall challenged large supermarkets and popular high street coffee shops in the UK to cut down the amount of waste that they produce, have you seen this program, Kate?
It's so true, once you 'See' all the plastic you can't unsee it...I find this really disheartening, any suggestions for not feeling completely overwhelmed? Thank you for sharing your lifestyle and advice with us! Love your personality and realness :) xo
Omg I saw the Martha's vineyard piece in your room and got so excited assuming you were here in the US for some reason :-D I went there just last month and was impressed about how zero waste they were. Love that place!
Buying a coffee and then taking the coffee cup back isnt stopping the demand for production, the woman selling it isnt going to care, its just another part of the clean up routine for the cafe, dont give them the money to keep buying disposable cups in the first place, the CEO sat in another office in another company wont know orcare
I think the efforts you make are certainly important. I do, however, find it completely perplexing when individuals who are invested in the environment are somehow still not vegan.
I'm trying to start a zero waste store business, but I'm really baffled by the fact that all, so called, zero waste stores get their product fully packaged. Sure, people who come to their store don't create additional waste, but what about all the waste created by the time those goods get to the store?
Hey,
I'm gonna be in the Shoreditch street area, do anyone know of a good local thrift stores I can visit?
Oh and is there a shop in that area I can find some zero waste basics like a safety razor and a menstrual cup?
You could just put this waitrose cup in the bin, its not nice for employee there when she face somebody's filthy cup. she is not there to put things in the bin.
Hi Kate, love your content. Would you happen to know where one could purchase the container for the bulk tea at " The Zero Waste Shop" around 09:05 of you video?
It shouldn’t be plastic free July, it should be plastic free January - December
Waitrose now do not have single use coffee cups! if you want a coffee you have to bring your own cup! just in case anyone didnt know 😁
It's a bit late for me to do plastic free July, but I might try plastic free January. That way I have a month or so to prepare ahaha
I am just asking myself, where does the store buys all the things plastic free?
make a video on how to get rid of plastic someone sends you or just how to get rid of plastic you already have
is the cashier of the zero waste shop SILO's chef or was it just an impression?
In the Waitrose near me you can get free coffees but only if you bring a reusable cup
Thank You for the tip of sending packaging back to the company.
Glad I'm subscribed to follow along this month! We're getting a zero waste store here this summer! We're not zero waste, but we are trying to reduce our waste. Your mascara looked great!
What do you think of the mascara recipe??
I just got that pint lid and it’s amazing.
We really miss your videos
You make it look real and easy
The week after I started binge watching zero waste videos was such an Awakening. I returned to my office and a client came in with a single use coffee cup complete with a PLASTIC STRAW. I was so distracted by the cup and all the plastic I could hardly focus.
I enjoy your sense of humor..." Their full of piss😂"
About the cup give back controversy: It raised my eyebrows when she said it's your responsibility and I would consider that a faux pas. However, her point is that companies profiting from single use items should take more responsibility in ensuring its proper disposal. This is what she should have articulated to the barista. We should all pick up litter, we should all pressure companies and legislators to curb the waste problem. An employee is representing the company and must field complaints like this on the company's behalf, but sadly most large companies don't entertain the input of their staff on the front lines, which is unfortunate for the companies and for the public as well as the employees. Just watch an episode of undercover boss. The low level employees always know what the company needs to succeed.
There is one in Kerala (India)
You always give such great advice! I am preparing myself for this fall/winter when I will start taking zero-waste lifestyle seriously in my life. Right now I am an aupair for a family that is nowhere near zero waste and all I can do now is leave hints and give ideas on things WE (as in the whole family+myself) could do better.
I'm happy to see someone recognizing how important political advocacy is in reducing our waste! Local government has such power to make important changes :)
I feel click baited, you only showed 30 seconds of the store despite titling the video about it.
You look so beautiful without makeup! (and of course with) I hope to get my skin the the point where I can go more makeup free (dang acne scars from years passed).
I'm lucky enough not to live too far from Earth Food Love and I love to go with my mum when im home from uni! It's an amazing place, but we have a lot of zero-waste options in devon!
Yay! I'm so glad you're back, I've missed your videos :) I almost spat my tea everywhere when you said the bottles were full of piss, made me laugh so hard! Looking forward to the next video! x
It's so cool that you've made a company aware and that they were able to re-use that plastic!
I found your Blog yesterday and I love your content!!! I just want to know something, why using a dishwasher? Is it not better to hand wash? Thanks
Frida Love I thought the same thing too
I think many dishwashers have an eco setting that uses less water and, even without that, hand washing (depending of course on how you do it) can use more water than a dishwasher. Just need to fill up the dishwasher and not do loads for just a few items.
I think the soap for hand washing is better, when I use dishwasher it only works when I use a strong chemical detergent :( You may save water using a dishwasher but the trade off is the detergent. I prefer hand washing too!
Very inspiring to hear that your e-mail actually worked! I never tried it before but now I will if the chance ever arises.
Happy to see you back! I love the idea of sending packaging back to the company, can't wait to watch more vlogs!
So glad you're back on RUclips! You're such an inspiration for me to start trying to reduce my waste. Thanks for these tips!
I liked after you said ginger beer children
Your videos make me so happy! I genuinely love watching them Kate and am so glad you are back :)
I"m so happy you're back! Totally understand the need for a break, glad you did that for yourself.
At what age do you think you'll become bitter and just angry with society?
similar problem tv station I watch is titled "this" lol totally feel ya on the "here" store 😊
Could you please do your mascara tutorial?? Thank youuu
I really enjoyed your video and have been getting more and more interested in the zero-waste lifestyle. However, I disagree with your sending packaging back to companies. I think it's great that you sent an email to the company in the example that you gave and it's great that they reused the packaging and are planning to change to a plastic alternative, but I think it's counterproductive considering all of the resources that were used to send your package back. Even if it was worth the reuse of the packaging, I'm sure the vast majority of companies that you send packaging back to don't reuse the packaging, and some may say they do but might not actually. I think it's important to consider all of the factors - not just the tangible waste - that go into our actions.
What a lovely vlog, I'd love to see more of those! :)
“Small ginger beer children” HAHA
"these are giant bottles of piss" lol
- Where do you get the coffe
- Here
😂😂😂
Great idea! We all need to email MP!!
LOVE your vlogs!!!
I do enjoy your videos. I'm also reducing the waste from my household. I am stuck on the farm hair products though. Shampoo and conditioner than doesn't contain nasties or come in plastic. Any ideas?
Have you tried lush far hair care? They sell shampoo and conditioner in package free bars
Eilish Kelly I did many years ago, but I do struggle with Lush. They pretend to be so fabulous pack many of their products with toxic chemicals and harsh surfactants and I'm very far from okay with that.
Shampoo is such a tricky one. I've tried no poo and my hair looked so horrid. I've tried making my own and still, claggy hair 🤔
Are you in a hard water area? I've heard that can cause issues when trying to go no poo
Eilish Kelly Yes. Sadly. For years, the shampoo has been my biggest struggle goibg toxin free. I can get past that with toxins but not without plastic pollution. Would love to find a solution.
you can try ordering solid shampoo bars online and ask for paper packaging only! there are some zero waste shops that sell it, like monomeer
Omg you're so pretty
