Wheel of Fortune was my all time childhood show back in the 2000's. In fact, it was the very first TV show I ever watched. Wheel of Fortune helped me learn the alphabet (besides Sesame Street) whenever a contestant called a vowel or a constant that is used on the puzzle board. Back in June, one of my childhood legends, Pat Sajak, the host of Wheel of Fortune, announced he will be retiring after Wheel's 41st season. American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will be hosting Wheel of Fortune starting in season 42.
I enjoy most of the game show sketches, but this one I was happy to see move away from the same sex jokes they've told so many times and the reacting to photo jokes they've done so many times. Nice to see something with a different premise and low-key performances. Great to see JAJ trying out as host too. My favorite part was Heidi finally getting an X and JAJ just ignoring her protest.
OOPSIE! "The Phrase That Pays" is extraordinarily a game show sketch from "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" on NBC, hosted by Dan Smatter (James Austin Johnson) with 3 friendly contestants (Austin Butler, Heidi Gardner and Punkie Johnson) that combines "Wheel of Fortune" (hosted by Pat Sajak and VANNA White), mixed with "Family Feud" (hosted by Steve Harvey). And, lol, at the way this was set up for Troy to win everything.
Name that tune. Just like New York’s #1 for throwbacks here on 94 7 The Block, Uplifting Star 99 1 and 107.5 WBLS, New York’s #1 for the R&B! It’s “Hotel California” by EAGLES.
Austin really has that "Old Hollywood" flair. When he played Elvis I thought the same thing. Like "is he an old Hollywood actor reincarnated?" He's very good at it! So but this is "It's a Wonderful Life"-esque, yet the comedic timing is clearly present. Even for Saturday Night Live!
@@JessicaSmith-ue7mp "Are you a book lover?" "I actually haven't done that yet!" "........ read a book?!" "It's on my list." I died, but I guess most people didn't get there
I see they fixed the director mix-up when this was live. During the part where they say their ages, the camera was to go to Heidi and her saying "no", but they cut to Punkie instead.
Anyone notice some camera malfunctions this season? Saw the camera go to Punkie when it was Heidi’s line. Noticed the same thing happen a couple times during the Keke Palmer episode too. Hilarious sketch regardless! I’m really liking the new cast. James Austin Johnson really hit the ground running when joining the show last year, and hasn’t stopped. He seems like someone who would do well being part of any SNL cast past or present. He’s an instant MVP like Hader was when he joined.
i like how everyone in this has a unique personality, not just that one weird character
Yes!!
Good call, yes, and they felt like real people.
That's a good observation
It’s like the Celebrity Jeopardy sketches. Like it’s fun to have an odd-one-out sometimes but I like this return to forme.
Those characters are still weird but toned down.
Heidi’s delivery of the word NO with her refusal to say her age cracked me up for some reason
😂
Same…I can relate!
She’s always about to cry.
She’s just plain funny. Great delivery every time.
She is so consistently funny in every sketch.
I hope Kenan enjoyed his day off from game show hosting duty.

Austin is remarkably good at playing a himbo, and I mean that completely positively.
But he said "write" a book.
The funniest part about this skit is the reference to the Chess scandals from this year. Absolutely genius.
That makes more sense
It was a hilarious reference. Still worth noting that the guy didn't actually have anything in his ass haha.
